I recently made a conversion of King Robert Baratheon, loosely based upon the character's appearance in the HBO series Game Of Thrones. I used the head and cloak of a Warhammer Empire Knight, some parts of the body of a Wars of the Roses Perry Miniatures soldier, and some green stuff. This is how it looks now that it's painted:

Comments and (constructive ::) ) criticism very much appreciated!
Edit: In case you're wondering why he has a snow base, that's because the figure was based on Robert's appearance when he arrives at Winterfell. :)

Great conversion :)
How i imagine him.
-
Nice conversion indeed. You might want to paint the wolf's head on the cloak a little more in detail. Just an idea. It would add some more character to the whole model.
-
Nice work. I did imagine him larger (around the waist especially) having just been introduced to the books but that doesn't detract from the figure!

Agree with Doomhippie re: detail on the wolf cloak. But a great conversion, and I like the colour scheme!

I'm liking im very much...nice conversion work

Since I thought it would be easier to have my pictures together in one thread, I decided to continue in this thread with my next A Song of Ice and Fire miniatures. By the way, I forgot to thank you all for your comments - so thank you. :)
Last week I painted a few Lannister soldiers, and I also converted a Perry WOTR mini to the Hound, using the head and sword of a Warhammer knight and some green stuff. Today I finished painting the Hound. I'm basing these troops loosely around the King's Landing army during the Battle of Blackwater bay, but I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this, since I never finish a complete army and I suppose that will be the case with this project as well. ::)
Anyway, enough talk, here's some pictures:

This is the complete warband. I apologise for the blurry pic, I never seem to get that right. :-[

Here's a close-up of some soldiers.

This is the Hound, I stuck an arrow on his base and painted it as one of those burning arrows the Hound finds so scary.

I would very much appreciate your comments!

Nice little project so far 8)
Just a small suggestion, how about (I know he's already painted) shaving off some of the
Hounds hair near the disfigurement to help emphasise it a bit more.

To err is divine, or somesuch thing...
-
A lovely conversion and nicely executed. I do agree with Jimbibbly though, the lack of hair on one side would emphasise the facial disfigurement more which is why it is so effective and striking a look in the TV series...
I like the look of your Lannister troops too. Funny, having spent all this time getting my Westerosi bannermen to a stage where I can start painting, I find myself strangely nervous :?

Great project! 8)

Looking very good :)

Thanks for your comments, gentlemen! :)

Yeah, I know that it would look better, but I'm afraid of ruining the paintjob and head if I try to file off some of the hair, so I think I'll leave it as it is. Originally I did intend to sculpt less hair at the scarred side of his face, but at the moment of actually sculpting it, I just forgot to do that... ::)

OOH! COOL STUFF, Cyber! I like your painting style: both The Hound & King Robert have an abundance of character of the sort only some FINE brushwork can capture. GREAT WORK!
Though I'm not a follower of the series, I will be following your thread & inflict commentary on occasion.

Thank you, DeafNala!
To continue this project, I have recently ordered a few more miniatures for my King's Landing/Lannister bunch.
Firstly, I ordered this dwarf to create Tyrion Lannister (I will need to find a head for a headswap, but firstly I need to see how big the head should be, so I'll wait until the mini arrives):
It's from Denizen miniatures, by the way.
To create the kingsguard, I ordered four of these guardsmen (from New Line miniatures):
And this head pack (from ebob):
I will post further progress here.
-
All those proposed minis and bits look very good and suitable. :) Looking forward to see them all done up.
-
Great job on the scarring! Fantastic brushwork on the eyes and armor too. I must have noticed his wide eyes because of the fiery arrow at his feet. Nice touch!

I am yet to receive the bodies of the kingsguard, but the other components have arrived. I'm a bit worried about the ebob heads, since they are a tad small... Hopefully the miniatures for the bodies aren't too big and bulky.
Anyways, here's some progress...
I painted eight Lannister archers, led by a brave lannister captain, raising his hand to give the signal to release a volley of death upon their opponents:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Lannisters6_zpscc484234.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Lannisters6_zpscc484234.png.html)
Here's some pictures of the captain himself:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Lannisters7_zps2878c9f9.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Lannisters7_zps2878c9f9.png.html)
And last, but not least, Tyrion Lannister himself:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Lannisters8_zpsd371df37.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Lannisters8_zpsd371df37.png.html)

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Lannisters9_zps89fad149.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Lannisters9_zps89fad149.png.html)
I'm afraid his eyes turned out a bit too wonky... But the books did describe him as having "Mismatched eyes", so I won't worry too much about that.
Your comments would be very much appreciated! :)
-
I wasn't sold on that mini for Tyrion when you posted the bare metal but he's turned out cracking!
-
I really like Tyrion. Just finished watching the second season and he looks very similar to the series version. The archers are cool too
-
Thanks for your comments, chaps. :)
-
Very nicely done. Like the bronzey-looking armour of the captain :)
Great Tyrion.
-
I echo Captain Blood's comments, these Lannisters are nicely realised - your claws are indeed long and sharp! The bronze armour is very suitable bling for a Lannister captain. I can see I will have to pull my finger out and paint up my own Lannisters.
-
Thanks!

I wish you good luck! :)

Inspiring project here, it's really coming together well! What rule set are you planning to use for this by the way?
thanks
n
-
Great project and I'm really enjoying the figs and paint work.
But what I can't get away from is the Saturday Night Fever finger point - that captain is really "stayin' alive". lol
-
Once more, thanks!

lol Damn you, now I can't look at him without thinking about that. lol
-
Very nicely done!
A quick question, I'm sure you must have a reason, but why is Tyrion's shield bare wood? Is it described as such in the books?
-

Thank you! No, it isn't described as bare wood in the books, in fact I don't think he had a shield at all in the books, but I just thought wood grain would be more interesting than even more red.
-

Sorry, forgot to reply to your comment. I haven't exactly decided which ruleset I will be using, but I suppose I will once again use the LOTR rules from games workshop. They have some flaws, but are still great fun and provide an easy, fast-paced game. Maybe I should modify some of the archer rules though, since it's quite hard to hit your target.
Today I ordered miniatures to convert them to Stannis Baratheon and Davos Seaworth. I bought this one a second time for Stannis' body (the picture is my own, I painted this miniature some time ago to be used as Túrin from Tolkien's The Silmarillion.):
(http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg624/CyberAlien312/TurinTurambar.png) (http://s1247.photobucket.com/user/CyberAlien312/media/TurinTurambar.png.html)
I will be using green stuff to add some more detail to his otherwise quite boring mail.
As for Stannis' head, I will use the head of the miniature below, with some of his hair removed. I will also use the body of this standard bearer for Ser Davos, again with a little more detail added with green stuff. I will also add a new flag, and probably add a sword to his left hand as well:
This will be Ser Davos' head:
I was wondering if I should either paint an onion (his own sigil) or a stag (Stannis' sigil) on Davos' banner, so what do you think?
Cheers!
-
Lord of the Rings is a great rule set! Do you cook up your of stat lines, or simply choose from the ma ny, many character stats available?
Thanks
n
-
I make up my own stats, since I prefer stats that are based exclusively on a character. Although there are a lot of stats available, I think that there are no profiles that completely suit the characters I have in mind, so I always make at least a few alterations. Most of the times I use this webpage: http://membres.multimania.fr/l01c/lotrcostcalc.html
It makes it very easy by calculating the cost of the profile. It's not always that accurate, but most of the times it's quite good. :)
-
I hadn't seen that points cost calculator before, handy!

Nice find - thanks for the link CyberAlien

So, after a long time, finally another update. I still haven't received the miniatures for the kingsguard, Stannis and Ser Davos yet, so I guess I'll send them an e-mail :-[
But I did paint some Riverlands troops, to use them as Stark allies. First up are the soldiers:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Riverlandssoldiers1_zpsed3504cd.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Riverlandssoldiers1_zpsed3504cd.png.html)
The miniatures aren't exactly good, really. But they were only 50p each and they look quite GoT-like, so I think they're fine. I might replace them with more Perry figures one day.
From the same manufacturer, I also assembled this miniature (the miniatures were supplied with loose heads, shields and weapons), Brynden "Blackfish" Tully:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/brynden1_zpscbdf7c96.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/brynden1_zpscbdf7c96.png.html)
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/brynden2_zpsf6c8744f.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/brynden2_zpsf6c8744f.png.html)
And finally, I converted Robb Stark himself, using the body of a Perry WOTR soldier, the head of one of those cheap figures, a Warhammer cloak and green stuff:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Robbstark1_zps579a7093.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Robbstark1_zps579a7093.png.html)
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Robbstark2_zps9c66fa79.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Robbstark2_zps9c66fa79.png.html)
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/thomasvangaalen/Robbstark3_zps89170845.png) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/thomasvangaalen/media/Robbstark3_zps89170845.png.html)
Honestly though, what is that thing on his cloak? Some cougar or something? Anyone have an idea as which Westeros animal it might pass, if any?
Cheers

With a bit of greenstuff you could make it wolfy enough I suppose.

Hm, perhaps I could.
Completely forgot this one...

The latest additions are VERY NICELY DONE indeed! You have developed a charming & distinct style all your own.

Shadowcat (http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Shadowcat)
-
I'd echo Barks comment - I'd try a shadowcat pelt, but greenstuff the head to make it more bobcat/feline like
http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Shadowcat
I'm liking the little touches on the figures. I've got to the stage in my ASOIAF where I have several units almost fully realised but lack the creative 'oomph' to finish them off. I now have so many to do I don't know which ones to work on first!
