thought you might like to know i am in the process of having sculpted
a vast new 28mm Mesoamerica range for the 16th century commencing
with the neglected Mayans who along with some Conquistadors will be
released at Salute.all neglected tribes as well as the two big players
Aztecs and indians will be covered plus artillery ..baggae trains ...and
other ancillary pieces.

Excellent figures and a good start to what promises to be an extensive range

Great news!
-
Awesome!!!!!!!
-
I'm looking forward to seeing more. Good luck with the ranges :)
-
Did Mayans go into battle with such little clothing? Genuine question, I don't know so much about them in warfare compared to the Aztecs.
-
Conquistadors, you say...? :)
-
Would love to see some conquistadors.
-
Looking forward to these. Of course, Salute is a few thousand miles too far for me to get to so I would appreciate if pictures and more info were posted soon afterwards.
Please and thank you. :)

thanks for the interest chaps...the Huaxtec which these Mayan branch are based on were fond of fighting naked...but not all, the Aztecs thought this pretty crude and looked down their noses at them as well as fearing them, and often ambused em with odds of 10/1
in their favour!! :o

indeed Glen.............have spent a lot of time on this range as after
all it would be rude not to do the Mayans.........was aiming for the end

i have made a nod in the direction of Apocolypto and striven for accuracy.

amazing tribes in that peninsular.........

There were several female conquistadores in the conquest of Mexico, one was a cavalry woman and fought well with a lance. Refer to Cortes' letters, Diaz, some of the legal documents of the services of conquistadors etc. Plenty of resources to chose from.

If you want an easy reference to the collected histories of the Spanish individuals involved in the Aztec conquest, buy Hugh Thomas's Who's Who of the Conquistadors. He collated the Conquistadoras into one small chapter for easy reference. An excellent scholarly work researching each person in the conquest, a brief history of them and their involvement and where they are mentioned in various memoirs, court cases etc. Good for fast references to digging for deeper detail on personalities. The only let down in the whole book for English readers is his occasional (and very informative) quotation of Spanish sources in old Spanish within the English text.
His equally excellent book The Conquest of Mexico is a very detailed retelling of the Aztec Conquest with almost every snippet of hidden information from court cases, the major memoirs, native sources etc which fills in lots of hidden bits of back story. At times dry and difficult to read, it has decent chapter notes on sources for those that read a Diaz or Cortes or Hassig once and thought they were experts in the field.
-
noted CDM great tip ......will have a look for this...like the idea of
neat blocks of information ..so much easier then gathering scattered
info mentally as well as physically.

Peru=Poor, Chile=Not so Poor.
Peru=Loads of natives, Chile= No natives, dislike of natives whom they refer to as "Peruians"...
I think I got your answer there for you ;)
-
Peru=Poor, Chile=Not so Poor.
Peru=Loads of natives, Chile= No natives, dislike of natives whom they refer to as "Peruians"...
I think I got your answer there for you ;)
Yeah, well there's more than a kernel of truth there but the remarkable thing is the commonplace nature of this attitude and the level of vitriol that accompanies it and it crosses class lines. I spoke with a very well off woman, who ironically was part Chilean herself and she had this attitude. Working class people I met thought along the same lines. You don't get this sort of thing elsewhere. Most Brazilians couldn't give a shit for their neighbours but they don't go out of their way to comment on them save for some uncharitable jokes about Argentines.
I've met Peruvians in Chile and they are often the victim of racism directed at them by the locals. There are significant numbers of indigenous Chileans and they seem to get the same treatment. Peruvians and Bolivian street vendors are a common sight on the streets in Rio and other cities these days but I've never met a Brazilian who found the phenomenon particularly noteworthy let alone a source of antipathy.
My conclusion? Folk on the western side of the Andes are a bit odd.

These have even gone down well with the TMP lot! I did, however, also look at the Mexican Revolution TMP thread you have and that reminded me why I rarely go back. I'm assuming you're just melting them all down to make lead flashing now (though I suspect I may now be told that it's the wrong sort of lead). I'm all for having miniatures that look the part but I can't be bothered with the 'wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong police'. ;)

the riders have no saddles attached. the saddles are typical conquistador
ones with high backs so could be used for other "mexican ranges"..including my own Maximillian where im getting cavalry done. :)

I hope you didn't think I was criticising there Ged? The comments on TMP about the Mexican Revolution figures incensed me! I go with your take on putting your money where your mouth is. Regardless of the information and sources that you have, someone will always be there to claim you are wrong. The reality is often that multiple truths often existed (or at least were perceived that way at the time) so more than one situation may be perfectly valid. You have gone with what sounds like a primary source or at least secondary source document in order to make a decision but still you are 'wrong', apparently. Some people need to get their heads out of their butts. History and archaeology are to a not unsignificant extent about reasoned interpretation of the available evidence. It's such a shame this has cost you money but I would say your foray into these periods is appreciated by more people than there are detractors. I was going to make this arguement on TMP in your support then realised it was just fuel to the fire so thought better of it. Keep up the good work mate! Steve.

I wouldn't bother if I were you Ged, he's a complete twat and his fondness for quoting at length racist tracts from the 1800s is disturbing to say the least.
You produce some very nice stuff and don't need to apologise for it.

I'd love to go but I don't know anyone else going from my neck of the woods. None of the guys I game with are interested. Maybe I can plan it better next year.
I don't suppose my arguement (which I kept polite) will have much effect. Anyway, I'm genuinely sorry you thought I was having a go, I can assure you I'm very much in support of what you're doing. I'm sure Professor Martini will set us all straight about the Mexican Revolution, or at least his version of it, for clearly no other versions can exist in his little world. His comments have already given him away as nothing more than a wanna-be intelectual whoes own mindset is his biggest barrier. I don't consider myself to be an intelectual (I can't even spell 'argument'!) and I don't claim to know anything about the Mexican Revolution, but I've encountered people like Professor Martini many times; they're a widespread phenomenon in the seedy industry of history and archaeology. While their 'factual' knowledge may be good they often can't move outside of what they consider to be 'the facts' and interpret information for themselves. Don't get me wrong, there are some bloody good historians and archaeologists without any formal training, but our good friend Professor Martini isn't one of them.

Just to mention though, that ideally, what starts on TMP should stay on TMP. 'Cos we don't want all that angst leaking into the pleasant, good natured world of LAF. And we certainly don't want to get into reciprocal forum-bashing.
Just saying :)
Ged, I've painted one of your Mayans, and whatever your detractors elsewhere might be saying, I can confirm that they are EXTREMELY nice figures. And a pleasure to paint. Pics soon ;)
-
Ged: Whatever goes on with this ding-dong, having Cecil AND Clarence as back-up should keep the nutters at arms length!
;)
As for your Mayans: I wantses some. They look great!

But not all your Mayans appear to be in your webshop? That rather splendid looking archer for instance... ;)
Also, in the conquistador section, there's an artillery piece called a Lombard. Is that a typo for Bombard, or was there actually something called a Lombard (for lobbing pizzas perhaps? :))

Carlos
a fine fellow indeed.............straight out of a "Tango hall"...
im sure you exceed him in all areas!!! o_o :o :-* lol
-
No. I shall always be very much in the shadow of my great hero. Author, poet, academic, revolutionary and heroic martyr, a true son of Bahia. His claims to fame are wide and varied.
Sadly within Brazil, he remains a relatively obscure figure these days. His rather affecting tomb is not in Cemitério do Campo Santo, where all the big wigs are buried but next to the paupers plots in Quintas do Lázaros, which I suspect is as he would have wished it.
Americans probably have more reason to remember him, even though he wasn't directly involved, as it was a combined operation between his ALN and the MR8 that succesfully captured the US Ambassador in 1969 which lead to the release of 15 political prisoners of the dicatatorship.
If nothing else he is the author of one of my favourite poems.

”Their belongings must have become thoroughly worn and torn by the forest, soaked from the rains and the river rapids, and stained from the owner’s sweat, food, and the blood of’ innumerable scratches and insect bites. After a few weeks in the Brazilian forests, everything starts to smell of the mould of dead leaves that thickly carpet the ground. A bandeirante wore a kerchief and an old felt or leather hat, preferably with a brim against the ants, twigs and snakes that tumble out of jungle branches. He was thickly bearded. His shirts and underwear were cotton and his jacket and breeches of baize or coarse cloth. He wore stirrup stockings and tough hide boots.”
John Hemming, Red Gold, 1987

looks like a must have book Nuno! :)
-
Ged it really is a must have book. Hemming is a great writer.
More is always nice but to be honest I have so many of the Eureka coastal tribes and Portuguese adversaries you could describe it as a surfeit.
There is something that would inspire me and I've no doubt a few others which nobody currently makes, the Guaicuru people.
Fearsome warriors, distinctive in dress and superb horsemen who often fought on horseback.
-
And some inspiration for anyone contemplating the Guaicuru. Great film, slightly iffy trailer.

Oh you know, just my costume from last Halloween!
Actually I found them here:
http://depositphotos.com/11118136/stock-photo-Ancient-Mayan-Warrior.html
Apparently it was from a ritual dance reenactment in Mexico in 2010. There are quite a few. I was looking at potential painting schemes.

The sad irony is that the Maya were the only people that developed a written language as we understand it. They wrote many books, that were sadly destroyed by the Conquistadors at the behest of their clergy. so we don't have the beautifully illustrated codices as seen with the Aztecs. Therefore, we have to rely on Mayan mural painting.
The best preserved murals come from Bonampak. Here is an overview of the Emperor Chaan Muan presented with captives after a battle:
Try to pay attention to the "flunkies" at the bottom of the mural. That is the typical soldier, in this case, all unarmoured. Infuriatingly, none of the soldiers seem to have a "pacal" or shield.
Here is a close up of Mr. Chaan Muan himself:
Note the typical design of the "tok" or spear. Note the other figures seem to carry a type of macana or edged club. The end of the macana seems to be decorated in quetzal feathers. That is only my guess. The implement could be something entirely different.
Here is another detail from another mural showing Chaan Muan in action:
Just like the depictions of Aztec warfare, the victor clasps the captive by the tufts of his hair. Note that Chaan Muan is wearing the same jade decorations over his jaguar shirt/armour. The fellow next to him seems to be holding a "pacal", however the artist (again, infuriatingly) decided to paint it on end. >:(
A word of warning; Chaan Muan existed in the 8th Century, placing him smack in the Classical Era. Unfortunately, the Conquistadors showed up about 700 years later, during the Post-Collapse or Terminal Era.
For pictorial depictions of warfare set in the time of the Conquest, we only have the murals of the Temple of the Jaguars in Chichen Itza to go by. If you are lucky enough to be there, you will find a painting of a battle between the invading Toltec-like Central Mexicans and the defending Mayan Itza. The painting is breath taking. However, any type of photography is strictly forbidden and enforced. There are very few pictures of this mural. Here is the best one I can find. It is only a small portion of the entire painting:
It's hard to make things out. The Toltec influenced Central Mexicans wear a flattened head piece adorned with blue feathers, carry an atlatl, and have the painted round shield, typical of central Mexico. It's difficult to make out any Maya, if there are any.
Eventually the Toltecs defeated and merged with the local Maya, and made Chichen Itza a local capital. The famous buildings we are all familiar with such as the Great Pyramid (El Castillo), the ball court, the Tzompantli, and the Temple of the Warriors are all from this Toltec influenced era. Eventually the Itza overthrew there Toltec masters, but retained some of their characteristics, such as architecture, etc. How did these Post Collapse Mayan warriors look? No clue. Sorry.
-
great post thanks Bowman it answers some questions ..certainly one as to the seeming paucity of information on the "terminal" period of the Mayans.....its been mentioned to me recently that the Mayans may have
carried plain white shields (percentage low i believe) ...daisy shields..
the onus seems to have been on a plainer look shield..maybe as their
wealth diminsished the decorations became porer.
:o
loved this psot with much food for thought. spear tops are interesting.

Hi Bowman. Wasn't there something fairly recently where dating of buildings in Chichen Itza and Tula determined that many of the Chichen Itza buildings were contemporaries to, or predated those previously thought to have inspired them in Tula? The whole thing is fascinating! There's some great discussion coming out of this figure range!
-
"Fun fact" about the captives in the first mural, they are all captured enemy scribes which is why they are shown bleeding from the fingers. As scribes were responsible for writing about the glory of their lord (often a relative) and his dynasty, a Mayan symbol of victory over a competing city state was the breaking of the fingers of the defeated lords' scribes. A literal example of the winners writing the history.
-
It's hard to see but the left-most captive is shown having his fingers broken by a guard.
-

I have this on Maya shields from Maria Longhena's book on Maya script (I must admit to finding it a bit of a frustrating book as seems to repeat a few 'facts' that have been revised following new evidence determined well before the book was written, or at least published. Plus for a book on the Maya it spends a lot of time talking about other peoples).
"Usually shields were round, but sometimes rectangular, and were made of wood, wicker, or leather. The more valuable shields usually had a surface decoration of vividly coloured feathers from the quetzal or other tropical bird. Although there is no definite documentation, it is reasonable to believe that the Maya also decorated their wooden shields with turquoise mosaics, as was the custom of the Mixtec people. Shields of this type were also part of the funeral furnishings of high ranking Mixtec court dignitaries."
The image below is from the same book showing the shield of a terracotta warrior.

Elk
very interesting...the jade coloured mosaics seem to make a lot of
sense seeing their love of this mineral and its use as a body ornaments.wicker shields ....theres still an overlap with the Aztecs in]feathers it seems............pinced each others look and ideas..and why not

From googling and looking at images the round sheilds seem to be a smaller version of aztec style, now whether they are feathered is a different matter. The design on the face may be the key.

someones eaten the images!! i tend to agree with you as im of the opinion that the "Mayans" if we use the collective term...used Aztec inspired shields at least on a small scale. what else do you put on a shield if you have forests full of splendidly attired birds almost of paradice! . having said that the Mayans were very individualistic and im sure used the wicker/animal hide/jade encrucsted images we have chatted
about.

Ged,
Supplementary to the email I sent with other suggestions for images, these may also be of interest. I recall mentioning face pattern shields, on closer inspection many appear to be variants of the Jaguar gods face in various stylisations, which would be entirely logical on reflection.
GED, I've been away to Historicon and then immediately off to Chicago for vacation. A few comments if I may on the beautiful pictures sent in by CDM
By all means make a few of the Jaguar face rounded shields. But I would suggest they be limited to the rulers and highest ranked warriors. Even CDM's pictures show that the majority of the shields are the longer, feather edged "slat-like" shields. Just yesterday, I spent half a day at the Chicago Art Gallery. There, I took a picture of a sculpted maquette of a Mayan warrior from Calakmul, from the Classical era. He also carries the typical rectangular shield. I'll post it when I get to my computer at home.
It is difficult to read too much into Mayan artwork as it is not meant to be representative. For example, take the Mayan ruler in IMG 5111. Do you think that is an accurate representation of his actual headdress? Linda Schele wouldn't think so. It is an exaggerated rendering to emphasize the importance of the character being illustrated.
But more important to this discussion, "Is that a round shield that he is holding"? Perhaps, and perhaps not. Look below the shield and you will see that he holds the handle for the real shield. It is one of those longitudinal slat-like shields, that you can just see curling upward behind the figure's arm. I think that this is the artist's way of showing that the shield is behind the central character. I think the round shield is an ornate "dress" buckler more used for ceremonies and "parade ground" wear than an actual piece of military equipment. I think the presence of the overly ornate headpiece would corroborate that. But that is just my opinion and observation. I could well be wrong.
Secondly, while the figure is well sculpted and painted, the Mayan Warlord is more Mel Gibson than what is historically correct. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, if someone can show me otherwise. Until then, I'd like to see the same figure fitted out with some of the more typical headdresses shown in these beautiful Mayan pieces of art.
Despite what I said above, the reason we play with meticulously painted figures instead of just counters, is for the visual impact of seeing a well painted army. Therefore, I would be happy to field your Warlord figure in my Mayan army, Ged. He does strike an impressive pose, and his obvious visual impact should scare his Conquistador, or Mayan opponents just a bit :D
Looking forward to your new releases.
-
bowman
thanks for your fascinating input ..im still on quest regarding the
Mayan use of shield by "combat" troops persay as this seems to be the
most difficult to quantify. the array of blurry images in many pieces
of artwork for the period does not help ..BUT makes me even more
interested
like you im of the opinion the slatted shield saw a lot of use ..makes
sensea against the array of weapons fired at the Mayans..from other mayans and sundry other tribes.
im starting on another tribe as i need to build up equipment for the various tribe and get a decnt range. i read EVERY post on the subject
and mull things over................really though i just want a decent range
out there and will give it my best shot ;)
