Title: WOTR - What rules should we pursue?
Post by: Pyjamas on March 08, 2013, 12:35:35 AM
Hi to all,

Firstly can I say that this particular forum is such an inspirational and motivational site - great pictures, interseting discourse etc.  Sensational.

We need some help at my club please.

We are entering a large WOTR project and need to know what rules people are using.  To be honest I am not looking for a one game system fits all type since we want thes rules to be specifically Medievil in flavour.

We have played a game of Poleaxed 2 and this had a lovely flavour to it however I am a little unsure of the level of rules support for queries and interpretations/advice for this set.

We are looking at playing large battles at leisure in a non-competition atmosphere so a troops points system is not necessary.

Any comments or suggestions will be most welcome.

Regards

Carlo

I think IMPETUS are the best rules around currently for bigger battle Ancient/Medieval wargaming.

There is a free introductory version "Basic Impetus" which is complete and a great game in itself, but the full rules add a lot of characterisation and enhancements to the game and the armies.
http://www.dadiepiombo.com/indexuk.html (http://www.dadiepiombo.com/indexuk.html)

There is an active and well supported forum for the rules:
http://impetus.forumsland.com/index.php?mforum=impetus (http://impetus.forumsland.com/index.php?mforum=impetus)

Impetus units are 1 multifigure base so you can really work at diorama style basing. The full WotR army lists and a campaign are published in the Extra Impetus 3 book of lists.

Give the "By Arrow, Bill & Sword" Rules a gander. they are free seem to work for small skirmish to mass battles.

here is a link to a battle fought using those rules.

Maybe you can use SAGA for it. There are some rules for it in the net.

We play with the Perfect Captain set as well. A bit "board-gamey" with assorted chits, but we like them.

Big Martin, please say more.  I've downloaded these rules and perused them, but still don't have a feel for the learning curve.  They're so different from the rulessets I'm used to.

Once you got all the cards and counters printed and laminated, how long did it take your group to get the hang of the mechanics.

It has such thoughtful period design elements, I want to forge ahead with it - production of game aids notwithstanding.

Would love to hear more about your experiences with it.

We use Bloody Barons from Peter Pig:

Originally written for 15mm games, but work with any scale figures if you amend ranges.

In my experience, two total novices can master the mechanics over the course of an evening's play  :)

Ha! Hadn't seen that. That's auto spell check for you.
I could always create a rule set called that, based around the dangerous breakfast barons...

I'm tempted to get Turks for it, but the croissant banner may be difficult to render...  ;)

I think the images are big enough you could save them like that.
