Okay, so the FW figures are hardly cheap, but I love the theme and away we go!
I already have a 30K-era VI Legion force. So it was time for something different with the release of The Betrayal. Of the four armeis listed, the Death Guard seemed the most intriguing...
First batch were a little heavy on the eye make-up:
Second batch came out better, I think:
Right hand pauldrons all gloss varnished up ready to receive transfers :D
-
Nice work, Janner!
I like 'em.
:-*
Trying hard to resist this era myself, as I am totally hooked on the period due to the novels (I know some are pretty ropey...) and have always loved the background.
I think that I will settle for watching you guys (Agis isnt helping either... ::)) with your projects and pretend they are mine.
:D
Thats that settled then.
Looking forward to more.
Bring 'em on!
(Also, I dont want to give Jibbly another excuse to call me a butterfly...)
-
Most interesting nice job there, Janer! :) I pretty much like the dirty white colour, I don't find that particularly easy to do. The overall looks of these marines is simply spectacular!
-
Looking good! Horus Heresy does have a certain appeal to it.
-
Very nice Steve 8)
They are expensive but very tempting aren't they :D
cheers
James
-
They look great! are they the only only modles you are geting for the death guard? Or are they just the start of an army? Also got any pics of your 30k space pups?
-
Welcome on the evil side! 8) ;) ;)
-
Thank you all for the kind words.
Yes, this is but the thin end of the wedge. The next seven are already on the painting tray - final six marines for the first twenty-man Tactical Squad and a Centurion.
Second twenty-man Tactical Squad are en route from Nottingham, as are a couple of Apothecaries and some other bits and bobs.
In the meantime, I've a Autocannon equipped Support Squad and a Contemptor to keep me busy :D
I will sort out some piccies of the Space Pups, but there are a few on my blog if you cannot wait ;)
-
First twenty:

and yes, went for red plumage after all
-
Great stuff Steve :-*
cheers
James

Looks great. Big fan of pre heresy death guard armies.
-
Spiffy! :D
-
Looking good, Janner!
They look great en masse like that.

Hello Janner, lovely paint jobs, they all turned out really well, even the guys with 'too much eye make up'. What rules will you be using for these? Are there any special 30K rule sets out there?
As an aside, though the sculpts are fantastic, they also remind me a little of 'Reaction Marines' from RAFM:
http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RAF&Product_Code=RAF05013&Category_Code=SKRM
(perhaps it is just me)
A great thread, I hope you continue posting,
Damien
-
Thanks all.
I went back over the ones with the heavy eye make-up :)
We're using the new Betrayal book released by Forge World now, but had been using the Tempus Fugitives prior to that:
http://www.tempusfugitives.co.uk/pdf/40k/AotE%20Expansion.pdf (http://www.tempusfugitives.co.uk/pdf/40k/AotE%20Expansion.pdf)
They do look a bit like the RAFM marines don't they ;)
Next up is a heavy support squad...
-
Thanks janner, I just downloaded that pdf and it looks like a really interesting read; I am off to print it now.
Cheers,
Damien

Very nice work. You'll have to build a ruin scape now. lol
-
Very nice must admit I love the books, Wish had infinite funds I'd do this and a great many other things.
-
Very nice work. You'll have to build a ruin scape now. lol
I'm thinking of doing entrenchments that would cover historical and 30K, but it might not be possible to cover both ::)
Very nice must admit I love the books, Wish had infinite funds I'd do this and a great many other things.
They are very expensive and you can fund several 28mm metal historical armies for the same price. However, I have limited painting time and enjoy painting enough to not want it to become a chore. So I'm following the froth for a while and damn the cost :D
-
Trenches would be a real hoot. I take that we're doing a bit of WW1 night raids in 2014 anyway seeing that it's a hundred years and all.
-
Well I do have more than a few Imperial Russians, as well as the odd German...
-
I'm thinking of doing entrenchments that would cover historical and 30K, but it might not be possible to cover both ::)
Now this I want to see :D

They have corners as well... so you wont have long open trenches- lol

They have potential :D

First of 10 Autocannon armed Heavy Support troopers:
I changed the helmet crest for the Mk II version for consistency
More on my blog...
-
Mispost o_o
-
With the next five Heavy Support guys close to completion, it was time to get twenty Tacticals undercoated and ready for painting :)
-
Do you paint them on the sprues then?
cheers
James
-
I do the undercoating and base coats on the sprues, then assemble them and do the washes, shading, details etc.
Found there were too many hard to reach corners once fully assembled and it's easier for my aged hands to deal with chunky sprues ;)
Also, the washes run off bare resin. So it you miss a bit, it can stand out a tad.
-
Next five Heavy Support:

Very silly - so what's not to like :D
-
Excellent work, Janner.
:-*
i am enjoying watching this progress and pretending it is my very own DG Legion.
You are saving me a fortune!
:D
After seeing these fellas, I will never be able to look at a leaf blower in the same way again!

Marshal Durak Rask, Siegemaster of the Death Guard Legion:

Take him to the car wash!
Dirty boy!
(Not you, Doc, I meant the Siegemaster....)
-
No, you were right the first time, he is also a dirty boy ;)
-
Next twenty Death Guard Tactical marines base painted, assembled and ready to receive some washes. Well, after I've touched up a chip I've just noticed on one of the guys at the front ::)
(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd141/jannerxi/HH/IMG_0932_zpsce3fb863.jpg) (http://s221.photobucket.com/user/jannerxi/media/HH/IMG_0932_zpsce3fb863.jpg.html)
Yes, there are two vexilla in there. In truth the first twenty were actually the first halves of seperate squads with subtle differences in the decals.
These, then, will make up the second half to each twenty man Tactical squad.
-
Ready for highlights, scuff marks and general tinkering:

I'm on a roll Hicksey, but don't worry, I'll get back to painting some of your lovelies some. I have a schiltron awaiting my attention ;)

Next 7 should be ready in a couple of days...
Hope you had a great trip!
My 'nids will happily chew up these new ones.. although strictly speaking they didn't exist at the time. :)
-
They do look great, as your previous units :)
Not an easy colour for proper (i.e. realistic) weathering, but you really succeed in achieving that effect! Pretty nice work.
-
Janner said I can put these in here
I wanted a military look for these boys when I started. I haven't quite decided which legion they belong to yet (maybe very pale salamanders or Luna wolves)

That medic looks ace!! :-*
Why'd you go and do the armour different on that guy though?! o_o
-
Nice work, Janner.
Love the medic!
:-*
When do we get a group shot of the Company so far?
;)
-
I did the same with the previous medic. The rest are off-white and I wanted the medics to stand out with purer white armour (suitably weathered).
Just got some Deathshroud to finish off before the first group shot :D
-
Woah, that guy has seen some action!
Great effect indeed, well done :o.
-
Pretty slick stuff...as much as I hate GW nowdays...the IP is still good and these figures are top notch. Good stuff.
-
So Deathshroud:

Nice! A special sort of close combat marine I gather?
Primarch's bodyguard.
;)
A lovely rendition of them, too.
:-*
Of course this now means that you have to do the man himself, Janner.
You know that, dont you?
-
Primarch's bodyguard.
Oh OK. My second suggestion was that they were typical farmers of the 41st millennium.
In the 41st millennium even the grain is lethal and requires armour to harvest. lol
Yes, let's have a primarch!
-
They look good, but the weapons are stupid IMO.
-
but the weapons are stupid IMO.
Can't be any worse than chainsaw swords, can it?
-
Chainsaws are always cool lol
-
If you thought the grain was lehtal, wait 'til you see the trees!
-
I'll surely do their glorious leader once FW release him ;)
As to the idea of power-scythes, I'd hope no one would take their small resin space toys too seriously lol lol lol
Still you never know ::)

But still - you have to admit that these guys would be pretty awesome at harvesting grain! lol

Still you never know ::)
I don't do resin ;)
I still think a power scythe is silly though. In same league as Space Sharks riding a flying shark or Space Wolfs riding wolfs.
Even though I prefer the super silly Rogue Trader approach to 40K, there is just somethings which is becoming too over the top in new GW stuff.
Admittedly the pre-heresy stuff from Forge World is mostly very cool though.
-
In the Grim Darkness of the Farm Future...there is only Agriculture.
Warharvest 30K.
-
No offence intended Jonas, and yes powered battle scythes are very silly indeed. But, these marines have flared power armour so what can you do!
On a boring note, whilst these are an extreme version, more mundane use of scythes in combat has quite a long heritage including the falx, fauchards, rhomphaia and, of course, the Japanese kama.
So roll on harvest time: scrumpy, wanton wenches and plenty of reaping ;)
-
I know scythes have been used in combat, but as far as I know it has been used by peasants who could not afford a real weapon. Surely an elite marine could do better.
Anyway, it is an impressive army you have and I hope we soon see a group picture.
-
Nice paint, Janner :)
As for scythes... it doesn't matter how daft you think they are, they are in the rulebook.
-
Nice stuff Janner. I need to get my stuff back on the work bench
-
So roll on harvest time: scrumpy, wanton wenches and plenty of reaping ;)
Seconded! lol
Fantastic, gritty paintjobs Janner. Very inspirational.
-

Anyway, it is an impressive army you have and I hope we soon see a group picture.
I think you are right that the use of a scythe would have been limited to levied or revolting peasants. However, in the diversity of medieval weapons, the difference between an agriculturally influenced polearm, such as a fauchard, guisarme or bill, and the halberds and glaives carried by elite formations is problematic. Even Oakeshot lumped them all together as staff weapons. So I'm not sure that a men-at-arms who had been tripped by a bill and then had the point stuck through his eyeslit or up his nethers would agree that it wasn't a real weapon lol
Still, as you know, these have scythes because they are the elite of the Death Guard and their boss looks like a Pratchett-esque version of Death, scythe and all.
-
Now I want to do a squad of World Eaters with a chainaxe in one hand and a bolter with a chainbayonet in the other. Paint them up in lumberjack plaid.
-
Now I want to do a squad of World Eaters with a chainaxe in one hand and a bolter with a chainbayonet in the other. Paint them up in lumberjack plaid.
Cue the Lumberjack Song:
'I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspenders and a bra
I wish I'd been a girlie
Just like my dear papa'
-
So, finally back to 'work' after my hols with a ten man Tactical Support Squad blah blah:

That is one deadly tactical squad! :o :o :o
-
My aim is to have finished painting the whole force by 15th August - only a couple of characters, ten termies, a dreadnought and a squad of Destroyers to go ;)

Time for an update methinks.
I did the Moritat and Destroyers back in August (that might make an average name for a rock band), but was pretty unhappy with the results. So I finally got around to Redoing them this week :D

There's still his eyes and bottom teeth to finish off. What a joy to paint he is!
Group shot - yeah, I need to sort out my lighting before doing anything so ambitious!

After seeing the last shot, I went back and tidied up his right eye a bit :D

When you gonna paint Loken??
Lovely paint jobs, do you think the set with the pair of them in is worth the money?
I've been thinking about getting them but my painting skills are not great and I'm sure my cash would be better spent elsewhere!
-
The base is pretty much done. So Loken is in the waiting room. :D
As to cost, it is pretty hefty for two gaming minis and a base. However, the details are extraordinary. So it feels more like doing a Historex model than a normal gaming piece and the pricing seems comparable.
I could probably have knocked out a couple of 28mm historical units in the same time it took to do Abaddon and his buddies, but it is a pleasure to out so much effort into a single grouping occasionally :)

Next batch, not quite finished though

Great additions, Janner.
Excellent weathering on those shields and the glow on those guns is particularly good.

Of course, limited edition, only the best will do (and Horus) ;)

Glad I placed my order when I did, the collectors one is sold out now

Are you going to the weekender next month?
-
Unfortunately no I'm not.
Would of liked to go but got too much on at the moment
Are you?
-
Yes, rare trip over to froth. Unfortunately, Salute was a non-go this year :(
-
I really like the grungy look you put on these. Makes so much more sense that the clean-cut high-def painting that is most often seen on marines.
