Title: my new british explorers
Post by: Yggdrasil on April 11, 2008, 10:59:48 AM
Hi everyone.
A friend had asked me if I could need some unpainted british explorers from foundry models because he doesn`t need them anymore.
I thought: "Well maybe they could be usefull in the far future" and I started to paint them.
The first three exploreres are finished.
Maybe I could use them with a "Dino Adventure"? Or something like "Lost World" well I don`t know exactly right now for what I could use them, but one thing for sure: these are some realy great models and it makes much fun painting them. 8)

Here they are :)

And of course they`ve got names ;)
I´m proud to present you:
"Sir Thomas Fletcher the third"

"James Edwards"

"William Baldwin"

Hope you like them :)

I really like the contrasts. Makes them look broody. You may want to take down the partly glossy finish with some brush on matte coat.

I think that`s a good idea. In the next days I try to get some coat :)

Very nice! I agree the shading makes them very dramatic, and the bases are very well done.  :)

Yesterday I´ve finished the next one.

@ Mors:
I was just looking at wikipedia for some typical british names ^^ I live in Germany so I know many typical german surnames. But i don`t know english ones.
Could it be that "morley" is a typical british name? I mean something like "Bauer" or "Schmidt" here in germany?
And by the way, the surname sounds realy cool!

Greetings :)

Morley is not unheard of, but it is not really a 'typical' name, such as Smith, Jones, or Davies.

I know a couple of Morleys*, and there was the dear old British actor Robert Morley:

(My grandmother met him at Buckingham Palace once. Aren't I a name-dropper?  :) )

*In fact we have a "waiting for all the players to show up" dice game called Morley, named after a gamer friend who invented it.

THAT'S his name! Trying to remember his name has been like a spot on my bum ever since Artizan released this figure:

Actually, I think that one is supposed to be based on British TV astronomer, Patrick Moore:

But I might be wrong.

I am sure you're right, I just got strong Robert Morley vibes.

For the long time I had him confused with Charles Laughton

Thanks for the information :)

Does anybody have some good sounding names for my next models?
there will be:

- One explorer/archeologist/ professor... what ever ^^
- One brittish officer ( maybe Corporal John Winston?)
- One soldier

I thought one model should have "Hemingway" as it`s surname... but which one should have this name?  :?

Corporal is a pretty low rank, remember, not really suitable for an officer. John Winston is a good name though.

How about "Horatio Hemingway" for your professor/explorer type?

Yes, corporal is an NCO, roughly equivalent to a German Unteroffizier (though these things don't seem to translate across directly).

In English when someone says "officer" it usually means a Lieutenant or higher. Someone with a commission.

I've always been a fan of the name Cuthbert. Arbuthnot is a surname that screams British to me.

I like Archie Grubb for your ranker.

A slightly squalid-sounding, but honest and hard-working name for a private soldier.

On a side note, what are you using for the tall grass on the bases? Looks very good.
