Title: Lead Painters League Season 7
Post by: Overlord on March 15, 2013, 09:22:08 AM
I'm very glad to announce the Lead painters' League Season 7!

As Alex, Richard & Ray are expecting to be rather busy for the next few months, I have poked my head above the parapet to run this years contest - please be gentle with me!

The rules are broadly the same as last year, but please read through them carefully:   http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51649.0

As in LPL6 the main points are:

1) The number of entrants will be limited to 50.
2) To qualify for participation in the League you have to enter 3 new teams by the start date.
3) Registration for Season 7 of LPL is only possible in a 5 day window (8th April-13th April 2013).
4) Any "Photoshop" manipulation of the photos is not allowed.

This thread is for general discussion on the LPL7.
All your rules questions should be posted here:    http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51649.0

As usual we ask you all to be careful with your comments on the running entries. Keep your comments constructive. Feel free to tell us your opinion about entries, but DON'T post any comments with any sort of "quality comparison" of the pics.

Some "no-go" examples:
- Entry A is great but I have to vote for entry B, this is so much better.
- Well entry A is so manifestly superior to entry B, that I cannot understand why so many people are voting for entry B.
- Entry A is running for the third time, so I give my vote to the Entry B, it's a newly painted one.

Any comments of this or similar sort will be deleted/censored without warning.

And now get painting. Good luck to everyone!

Awesome! Thank you generous Overlord for taking on the daunting task of running the LPL 7. I have read the rules and can't wait to get started.

Well, frankly, I have started of course, but now I can bite into the bonus rounds as well.

Good luck everyone! I'd love to be a part in it( God knows my lead pile could do with!! ;)) but I'm a wee bitty busy at the mo!!

Roll on round one!

Drat, no luck with the bonus rounds this time. :'( At the moment I'm trying to get my skirmish projects restarted. It's hard to make a command group if five models is the group. And civil war...no recognisable wars around here. I guess sci-fi is more skirmish-friendly but it's not on my project list either. Doesn't help in reducing the lead mountain if I have to increase it by a few dozen models first. :? Well, I'll see if there's something suitable...and schedules don't murder me so completely like they've done all winter.

Good call on the comment censorship.

Shame it's not starting after Salute but I probably wouldn't get something done for every round anyway  lol

Oh boy... I've got rd 1 and rd 10 covered, but rd 5 will take some creativity.

Still on the fence regarding participation though. Will have to think long and hard on that. Looking forward to a spring time full of eye candy though!

Nice!

Thanks for taking this upon you overlord

I have a lot of not finished projects standing on my painting desk that are really looking forward to being finished. Off course nothing that can be used for round 1,5 and 10 so I still have some work cut out for me. Part of the fun also comes from the frantic painting and I'll try reach a nice stress level with trying to build a lot of scenery. lol

I also would like to thank to Paul (Overlord), actually without him stepping in we wouldn't have any LPL this year.

Good Luck, Paul!

Need to decide if I'm going to push to enter this year, having sat out the last one - I seem to be falling into the habit of alternating LPLs, so 7 would form an elegant pattern with 3 & 5...

I'm not entirely a fan of the restrictions on basic photoshoppery - a well-chosen title & font could set the mood beautifully - but I understand why the restriction was put in place!

Title: Re: Lead Painters League Season 7

After my initial excitement I've realised I'm going to have to sit this one out. I'm putting the house on the market so my hobby time is now round about zero. I'd rather someone who could definitely commit to painting the full 50+ miniatures took my place!

Hmmm, yes, going to have to have a good think about this one. I *do* have the small matter of my university dissertation to write. I could talk to my tutor, but I'm not convinced this quite counts as grounds for a deadline extension...  lol

What’s the proper way to name our entry’s picture again? Last LPL a name structure was proposed to make things easier for the people running the thing… :?
Title: Re: Lead Painters League Season 7
Post by: Overlord on March 30, 2013, 02:37:27 AM
A very good point. Thanks for bringing it up, as it will help me greatly organising each round.

Ideally your photo should be named in the following format:

forum_name_01_title_of your_entry

ie. overlord_01_Napoleons_HQ

Please use underlined spaces between words. The 2 digit number after your forum name should correspond with the round it is being submitted for (01-10). This is especially important for the initial submissions as they cover rounds 01 to 03. If possible try to keep the titles for entries brief.

Thank you for your assistance.

Greetings,

what did I read above ? "Ah how did I miss you" :)
Well its SOO true.
And how I do long to participate this year again. Especially as the bonus rounds would indeed fit my lead 'Everest' (which wasn't the case with last years rounds).
Unfortunately RL intrudes rather heavily this year (and even more next year) so I won't participate as a painter. But you can be sure I will wait eagerly each weekly update to vote and comment. THAT at least I can do.

I wish everyone participating such great fun
and good painting and photographing luck
Jo

Is it permitted to let us know how many slots are left for contenders? (I would like to participate, found the announcement somewhat late, and don't want to get hyped up to do it and find out there's no chance left to enter).

I would be excited to be a part of this, but if that's not to be, I'll be happy to view the [always] tremendous entries!
Title: Re: Lead Painters League Season 7
Post by: Blue in vt on April 02, 2013, 03:34:22 PM
At this point no one is officially entered so all 50 slots are still open.  Once the Submission period opens then participants get a slot by entering their first 3 teams...the 50 slots didn't completely fill for several days last year...(if at all?)

Cheers,

Blue
Title: Re: Lead Painters League Season 7

@TheWeasel
As Blue said no entries are being taken as yet.

Entries may only be submitted from 1900 hrs on 8th April until 1200 hrs on 13th April, or until all 50 places are taken up.  The earlier you submit the better your chance of being accepted.

I have a real issue with the timing - I have no lead to paint - yes it is true

& keeping in the spirit of things I dont want to put in stuff that has never seen the light of day or been photographed

plus I am on a walking holiday along Hadrians Wall from the 13th to 19th April  so I am a bit bu****ed.

I shall just have to watch and admire...

Just a quick reminder to everyone; There are now less than 24 hours until the start of the submission window for entries for this years contest.

You may not enter your LPL7 registration pics before 1900 hrs GMT Monday 8th April 2013. Any earlier entries won't be accepted.  Entries must be received by 12.00 noon GMT on Saturday 13th April 2013.

Remember, you must submit THREE teams by this date.  Participation is limited to the first 50 entries received.  The earlier you submit, the better your chance of being successful, so dont leave it until the last moments or you might be disappointed.

Good luck to everyone.  :)

Please Note:

As Admiral Benbow has said, entries can only be made after 1900 hours GMT today.

As a rough guide that means:
2000 hours: UK (British Summer Time)
2100 hours: Western Europe
1500 hours East Coast USA
1300 hours West Coast USA

I have already received several entries early.  Please resubmit them at the correct time, as I don't want anyone to miss out, but must be fair to all entrants. Thank you.

One of the early submissions has no mention of the members forum name.  Can everyone please ensure that they state their forum ID clearly. I need to know who you are!

It is also very helpful to me if the following naming convention for photos is followed (which includes your ID):

forum_name_01_title_of your_entry

ie. overlord_01_Napoleons_HQ

Please use underlined spaces between words. The 2 digit number after your forum name should correspond with the round it is being submitted for (01-10). This is especially important for the initial submissions as they cover rounds 01 to 03. If possible try to keep the titles for entries brief.

Cheers.

I'm in again this year. With a 39th place out of 46 participants I'm most definately an average painter (at best).

Still, I'm aiming to get full bonus this year and hope to get at least two 'wins'. This last will depend on the match-ups. I have the impression that all match-ups are completely random throughout the entire competition, so that even after a couple of losses you can still face an 'undefeated' painter.

I should have known, since this change in time is the main reason I managed to miss some episodes of Star Trek when I was a kid :D

Looking forward to all the nice entries and as far as I see it, there are no mediocre painters in the LPL, everyone who manges to finish is IMHO a painting hero!

Looking forward to all the nice entries and as far as I see it, there are no mediocre painters in the LPL, everyone who manges to finish is IMHO a painting hero!

I can only echo this comment as I was deluded into thinking that I may be able to enter this year but reality went and slapped me around the chops whilst saying:
"You fool!
Do you honestly think that you could keep up with the tight schedule of a team a week plus extras?
Idiot!"

@ Wirelizard and gnomehome, in the worst case scenario we’ll end up in the 50th position… out of 3872 LAF members that’s still not too bad ;)

Thats the spirit!
50 of you fellas and the rest of us can only look on in admiration.

Good luck to all entrants!
Gotta admire you fellas.

Oh come now, I spent the weekend one city over at a gaming meet/convention, which means I spent all my gaming time last week prepping for that. Full day at work Monday, then home to touch up figures and throw them in front of the camera... at least one of the figures I sent off to Overlord still had wet paint on it, thankfully where the camera couldn't see it!

I MAY be able to do something similar occasionally, but KNOW that I wouldnt keep the painting rate up for ten weeks.

I went ahead and made the decision to try to enter last night. So, I stopped by Hobby Lobby on the way home for materials to construct an idea for a light box I've been kicking around in my head. Hopefully, I get it assembled this evening and pictures taken and sent in. Oh, and that I'm in time, too....!

I do have to add a standard to my command entry, and that will hopefully be finished up in time to photograph tonight.

So, hey, that means another average painter in the contest, too...!

Mildly surprised it's that low, actually, 36hrs or so after entries opened.

Come on, get photographing, people!

Submitted! I've only been working on it since I left school, oh, about 7-8 hours ago....!  o_o

I constructed a new version of my "light box" to photograph figures. It is bigger (covers an 18" square area, and is 24" tall) and breaks down for storage. I definitely have some tweaking to do on it, but it worked fairly well for photographing the first three rounds.

With the worst email issues I have ever had as Sky stumble through one of the most inept transfers to a new mail system using the aptly named Yahoo(s),

I think I have managed to put in my first 3 entries!

Will be having to Iron Man the rest of the season, although I always seem to do that!

The more I plan to plan ahead the less things stay to plan...

Good luck everyone, can't wait for the eye candy.

If anyone could confirm my entries have made it that would be great?

800 pixel images seem too small... I'm not even sure if my pics will look okay :p

No, I'll have to sit this one out on the touchlines with the halftime oranges and the fat weezy boys with a letter from matron  :'(

I could have rushed them but they're other peoples commission figures so it would've been a bit unfair.

I dunno where else to post it ... but the 2nd round of LPL7 is a killer!! I havn't had a round the last LPLs when I had so many matches needed to be thought over twice and thrice again! Usually I knew lot quicker whom to pick. Aahh! The agony of choices! So, well done of all of You! I even recoknized (that word is a killer for Germans, too °_O) Calimero at once, this time. ^^

It seems like there's a lot of past participants that skipped this year, for whatever reason. I almost passed on the LPL myself, in fact it came down to a coin toss! When I went through the names during round 1, I have to say I was disappointed because I knew I'd miss their great entries.

However- there's a LOT of people that came back that have really progressed. The overall level of improvement is quite clear and I have to say I'm enjoying what I'm seeing.  It seems more difficult to choose between entries this year. I think that says a lot!

Excellent work all, keep it up :)

Yeah, I think the high entry bar is getting to a lot of people, and possible the timing is just not right for a lot of regular contenders. That said I too love what I'm seeing, and this round does have a lot of close matches, which adds to the fun of course!

Now that Round 3 is underway, just a reminder to the participants that from now on they need to submit new photos by 12.00 GMT on the Saturday preceding the start of the next round to receive the appropriate bonus points.  If no new entry is received the photo from the previous round will be used.  You are welcome to submit entries much earlier than the deadline.

The deadlines are as follows:

Round 4  - Saturday 4th May
Round 5  - Saturday 11th May
Round 6  - Saturday 18th May
Round 7  - Saturday 25th May
Round 8  - Saturday 1st June
Round 9  - Saturday 8th June
Round 10 - Saturday 15th June

You have until 12.00 GMT on Saturday 4th May 2013 to submit Round 4 entries.
Good luck with the remaining rounds.  :)

Photos for Rounds Four & Six just sent off, figures for Round Five still in progress but progressing nicely, with figures for the last four rounds in progress.

I've just heard that I'm likely to head off on a six to eight week long temporary work contract around May 11th or so, though, so I'm suddenly in full-on painting crunch mode! I might wind up repeating a team or two for the later rounds, but Round Ten will have a neat team of very unique models and I think I can manage a full slate of entries before I head off!

Bloody coinciding deadlines and tasks where the instructions are severely lacking and the data unavailable and people who don't do their own work and it all piles up on me and grumblegrumblegrumble...

(Not talking about LPL here. Just those distractions which keep me from painting lead.)

Oh well, this week should be under control and almost the next one too. I'd need some extra buffer for upcoming absence, though. Let's see how it goes.

Pfew, that was close, just sent mine in. I finished it yesterday evening after three horrible nights. Taking pictures afterwards proved to be rubbish, so made another run this morning. Luckily these were good. Now to relax and get a cup of coffee... and get started on my entry for round 5 8) I probably won't go for the bonus theme, since I'm quite excited about painting some other miniatures.

Mine was also a close one...but not as close as Blue's....! It should be the last near thing, thankfully. The rest of the rounds are all pretty much all painted, unless I decided to go with a new team for Round 10. Problem is I don't have any unpainted Sci-Fi, so I'll likely go with an already-painted team (for the first time in 2 years).

I know smaller scales don't usually fare well in the LPL, but will see how my historical civil war entry goes starting tomorrow. As Monty Python would say, "And now, for something completely different..."

Round 5 now posted up.  28 new entries, of which 20 are themed.  :)

Can I please make a request for entries in the remaining rounds:
Some of the entry titles have become rather long, so long that they will not fit into the title box when setting up the contest.  Consequently I have no option but to edit them to fit.  If possible, can you try and keep titles reasonably brief.  A few words is fine, a long sentance makes my task more difficult.
Thank you for your assistance.  ;)

ALL LPL7 PARTICIPANTS:

Can I just gently remind eveyone of the rules regarding photograph composition:

The entry should not be an out-and-out collage of individual pictures, but primarily a ‘group shot’ of the team, in either scenic setting or against a plain backdrop, as you prefer. You may add close-ups or cutaways of small aspects, like faces, equipment, etc. and/or show different angles of the same figures (front and rear view for instance). But the main focus of the image must be on ‘the team’. The bases of each miniature should be in full view in the main photo and not obscured by terrain, scatter, etc.

You may add some close-ups of figure details you consider important or useful. For example, you may create a picture that has a central main image showing the team, and add a row of detail shots on top or bottom, or on one or both of the sides. Remember that the 800x800 pixel maximum size still applies, and you must keep the collage as simple as possible.

In short, the main part of the photograph should be a single image comprising the entire entry.  If you choose to add detail images they should form a minor part of the finished collage.

If you are unsure please ask me, or submit your entry early to allow time for correction and resubmission before the deadline if required.

Many thanks and good luck with the second half of Season 7.  :)

Overlord, so we can still use one big picture of the miniatures in their setting with one or two smaller pictures added/inserted for certain details? That's how I read this line at least:

Paul is a bit busy this weekend, so I'm running this round. Yes, you read it right, one main picture and some smaller close-ups without fancy frames and anything like this. Though we are still going to accept pics containing the front and the back view of the team as two main (50-50) parts as the only exception of this.

A definite no-go is making the main picture to a smaller (less than 50-60%) part of the pic and filling the rest with close-ups.

Not sure what I'm doing for rounds 9 and 10  o_o

The pressure... the pressure... I have a tendency to go over the top (like one of my influences, Hammers  ;) ) and round 9 is going to be a tough squeeze. I have ten minis, two terrain items and a building I just started yesterday I'm rushing to complete  o_o

I guess that it is safe to say that we are all really looking forward to it, Doc!
Now get finishing that building, my good man, there is no time for anything else.

Go for it Matt!
Now that Peder has no time paint, someone has to step up and do the OTT-scenes ;)

Well lads...I have some bad news.  On Saturday I stumbled coming down the stairs with my son in arms and landed on the hard tile floor on my ankle turned inward...thankfully I got him down safely...but .I broke 3 bones in there and am laid up with a splint and a bag of ice.  So ...either I'm going to have tones of time to get stuff painted...or I'm going to be incapable of getting anything done.  Only time will tell which...

Let the boredom begin!

 ;D

Cheers (trying to keep a stiff upper lip...)

Blue

Ps any posts I make over the next few days will most likely be from my phone so please excuse wonky spelling and grammar....my thumbs are too big...

Nice job preserving your offspring Blue, mother nature would be proud :)

Too bad about your leg though, hopefully it means you can do some painting, instead of laying around miserable.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone...surgery today to pin things together...so I managed to get a teAm done using some speed painting techniques.  Not my best, and certainly leaving bonus points on the table...but I wanted to finish with a new team.
If I'm not totally blasted out of my mind on painkillers I look
Fwd to voting on Sunday!

P.S. I feel like I should be painting something...

I usually have a withdrawal period after the LPL... like I'm forgetting to do something important...

Maybe a non-competitive 'Intramural LPL' will be in order... 'oldest thing in the Lead Pile' only?  :)

This is certainly a feeling I share...the lack of constant stress about finding the time to get things finished is quite odd for awhile.

As to the future I will personally shift my focus to the many other painting contests on other forums that I visit....Bugmans, CDO, OldHammer,...all of which are less stressful
Than the LPL but are great motivation to get something done!  I have one more unit of bretonnian men at arms to complete to finish the infantry portion of that warband...so they will be my first victims.

Cheers,

Blue

Sorry guys, no new entry rom me for round ten. i was on holiday and couldn't manage to finished my planned set and didn't want t reuse old material (otherwise the starship troopers would have been back ;))

Strangly enough, while I normally have a paint burn-out as well, it doesn't feel like one is there this year. At least not at the end of the LPL. Halfway though, when I painted a lot of models for some warhammer tournaments, I could not care for any painting anymore.   However today my coolminiornot annulas arrived and I'm getting a good feeling for painting a few more morels.

Anyhow, everyone good luck in the last round!

Well, it's been a pleasure to have competed with you again Gentlemen (I don't think we have any ladies involved this year).  I've even spent a couple of weeks in the top half of the rankings and won more rounds than I've lost.  So, a great result for me.

Thank you Paul for running this year's LPL and to Ray for the leaderboard updates.

Yes, it was a great challenge to paint to a weekly tempo. The thing I quite enjoyed was the planning and logistics of the League (figure choice, colour, composition, etc.). I wanted to try something different every round and for the most part managed to keep up. To be honest I'm not sold on the single photo format of the League but other than that small quibble I had an excellent time of it.

Many thanks to all the participants and especially to the organizers whose hard work made this all possible.

Best,

Curt

sorry for quoting that nearly completely, but that was exactly my thinking last year! I am really looking forward to participate again, next year!

My problem is a bit, that I cannot "paint in advance" for such a contest. WHEN I paint something I wanted to show it a soon as possible, listen to feedback and suggestions, and also grab some nice comments, if so. However ... next year I intend to have this special fun again!

best wishes and ... also thanks for the mind-boggling fun of choicing!

It feels weird to be sitting here on a Saturday with no new round to look forward to! I'm new to the board and this is my first competition like this, and I've had an absolute blast seeing the entries week after week. I'm going to miss rooting on my favorites and checking the leaderboard every week. Everyone did such a great job! Congratulations to all the participants--well done!
