Title: Cavemen
Post by: Sinewgrab on April 12, 2008, 07:43:39 AM
Alright you smarties,
I had a tough time deciding where to post this, but I'll drop it in here assuming everyone else does what I do - reads them all. I am looking for recommended caveman models. I know about the following:

Pulp figures Neanderthals
Copplestone Cavemen
Reaper Cavemen

Who else can I look at? I need big muscles, furs, and 28 to 30mm scale.

Steve Barber models, although they are somewhat cruder sculpts than the excellent Copplestone and Reaper figures.

I've got both Pulp and Copplestone and they are both great.

The main difference IMHO is that the Copplestone are more Homo Erectus and the Pulp guys look at lot more Neanderthal - so it just depends on your preference.

Here are my offerings which show both side by side:

The giant Waspquitoes are from Heresy:

But are not for the faint-hearted as they are a devil to put together - LOTS of fiddly pinning.

Yeah, same goes for the Reaper ones - much more Neanderthal, as shown in this pic...

The Copplestones are the two on the right, as you probably recognised!

Both brilliantly sculpted and characterful ranges of figures, although there are only 7 or 8 Reaper cavepeople available.

I know a lot of people here adore Pulp figures, but I just can't get on with them. Something just too cartoony about them. The poses / anatomy never look quite right to me. But that's just personal preference. If you want a lot of cavepeople, you probably need to go with Pulp.

The other thing people have said before when this topic has come up, is to use hairy barbarians - replace their axes and swords with clubs and so on. But I've looked, and there are only a couple of the ex-Grenadier, Copplestone sculpted barbarians whcih would possibly do, since the others all have elements of armour...  :(

Jeff Valent studios I think have just released a line of cave peoples and some prehistoric creatures. Bought some feathered compy-like creatures from the line at  Cold Wars.

Where did those baboons come from? I can think of several abuses for them for my RPG players.

The Valent ones go quite well with the Reaper ones

here are the little compy things on the far right, mixed with some GHQ 15mm beasties

HLBS has one pack of Homo erectus and one pack of Cavemen.
It is listed in their Flora and Fauna part of their catalogue (28mm).
I have not seen them in flesh but might work.

Maidenhead has a range of cavegirls too (though it's more fantasy oriented) and sells separate models.

Look in viking and ancient german ranges for naked fellows with long hair and beards. A simple weapon swap might do.
Vendel's barbarians may work too.

Hmmm - Jeff Valent and Shadowforge - both interesting... The Jeff Valent ones look really good, although the website pics are so tiny, it's hard to tell...

Do either have UK / European distributors, does anyone happen to know? Or is it mail order only?

Jeff valent only sells the cavemen direct, I got good serivce he did have a discount on them for Cave Wars members but I think that has finished.

I think Hobby Box, Spirit or Gamers quest sell Shadow forge...nope its Artemis Black, he sells them I am sure :D

Nice.

Only problem is that Reaper's newer figures take an age before the UK caster / distributor gets them. Like, up to a year behind the US release schedule.

And Transatlantic shipping from Reaper (I only did it once) was unaccountably expensive.  :(

Apart from that, I'd definitely like these two... And the jungle girl with the sabretooth cat, which still isn't available here in the UK, what - 8 months later?

I would just about kill to get my hands on the Grenadier Barbarians. I am here in the US, and there do not appear to be any stores carrying the Mirliton re-release...and shipping from Italy with the strength (or lack thereof) of the dollar right now, means practically a second mortgage.

Sinewgrab - Aren't these them from EM4

http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Infantry.html

They've been carrying the old Grenadier\Copplestone line for years I think.

Actually, the Copplestone are more Cro Magnon (early Homo Sapiens Sapiens). The Honorable Lead Boiler Suit Company has the Homo Erectus (before Neanderthal - more ape like head) in its "Flora and Fauna" section.  Not a bad idea to have different groups of prehistoric peoples competing in a game.

I hope to try knicking out bits of metal spearheads on some figures (such as the Shadowforge females) to make them look like knapped flint.  But somebody else on this forum is likely to put that idea into execution long before I ever do.

Already done it... I converted the Foundry Darkest Africa 'Jane' into an extra Copplestone cave person - she fits in like a dream with the rest of them - and all I had to do was shave off little pieces of her panga to create a faceted flint blade... I can recommend her as a cave girl!

As well as EM4, someone else also seems to have acquired the ex-Grenadier barbarians. They were selling them at Salute in packs. Good thing about EM4 is that you can buy singles (which I did!)

I think Transatlantic shipping from EM4 wouldn't be too bad. They are very quick and reasonably priced. The figures are 1.00 GBP each, which these days , might be considered pretty good value, although I appreciate the dollar/sterling exchange rate doesn't make that quite so attractive for folks on the other side of the pond...  :(

I have used some of the Foundry Ancient Germans as Cave men, notably the naked ones :)
