Found this interesting pic of Field Marshall Allenby entering Jerusalem on Dec.11,1917.  Check out the hat on the guy at left!

Of course, Allenby had Italian and French troops in his army, and their higher-ups would bound to be around for a big PR show like that.  :)

I don't think the second man, behind the Bersaglieri officer, is a Frenchman. The kepi is the wrong shape.  

The shape of the kepi and the hint of collar markings suggest, to me at least, an Italian colonel, either in colonial service (the dark collar might indicate Cacciatore di Africa) or of artillery if there is a black eagle-like badge on the kepi.  

I would really like to know more about the photo and about the Italian troops in Allenby's army.

I thought that Field Marshal Allenby dismounted and entered Jerusalem on foot.

Hi!

I think looking at the fellow behind the Italian is an Italian Carabinieri Guardie in cap.

This would make sense as both types of Italian troops were there in theatre.

Did anybody download the .tiff file? It's huge! If you look at it at full magnification, the figure Helen mentions is also wearing shorts.  The rifle appears to be identical to those carried by the British troops.  Did the Italians use the same weapon? Maybe they're Scots with a toorie on their bonnets?

not the Scots, but directly behind the front Italian 8)
