Title: Old West Town Roll Call!
Post by: Elbows on March 20, 2013, 08:08:23 PM
I know we had a thread on "how to name your town..." but I'd like to see how many Old West towns we have sprung up here on LA.

Drake's Branch, New Mexico

*Inspired by a small town in Southern Virginia where we first played some Old West games...when trying to decide on the name of the town, it became a no-brainer. (New pics coming soon)

San Augustin, Mexico

Well, I've got Ashbury, Colorado. But my set-up changes from game to game and it consists of papercraft buildings from Whitewash City. However, now that I've discovered MDF buildings I'm going to build a TOWN!!!!  lol

My Town will be called Malice (of possibly Malice Flats) inspired by Paul Weller of course, and I promise to post pictures next time I play...

I have two names for my towns (which I can hardly call towns at the moment as they only consist of a few buildings). Schitte Creek and Bull's Deep, two rival towns in a story I'm writing. Here are the few buildings I have actually finished, more in the works.

I once looked up real genuinely odd Old West town names and came up with this list.

Gobbler’s Crossing
Bloody Springs
Beaverlick
Smut Eye
Blue Balls
Goobertown
Yeehaw Junction
Benevolence
Licking
Cumming
Climax
Conception
Beer Bottle Crossing
French Lick
Big Beaver Lick
Knob Lick
Spread Eagle
Aimwell
Hot Coffee
Knockemstiff
Idiotville
Windy Bottom
Ding Dong

The mind boggles at some of these.

^That lists looks similar to places we have (mostly) in Lapland (our own "wild" frontier).

I used to have a village called Hickville, not that far from Idiotville on your list :)

Now the new place is called Dos Cruces, no pics to show yet though  :'(

My old west town is Calamity also located in Colorado, somewhere along the front range towards the southern border of the state. Here is a peak at what Calamity might look like when I get that far. Each model building represents a specific building that I already own, except for one that I'm designing and will be building from scratch. This is, currently, a mix of Battle Flag, Sarissa Precision, Knuckleduster/Tri-City Laser, Gamecraft Miniatures and Aetherworks kits.

If you reduce it to this it is pretty much my "Rattlesnake".

Ok, so its not clapboard and shingles and its named after a real historical town

San Antonio de Bejar in Texas.

Here is a small part on a 4ftx4ft

A couple showing some more (but not all) of the buildings on a 6ft x 4ft

In total it covers a 4ft x 10ft or 6ft x 8ft.

Hickory Flat

I needed a name so I googled "old west town names" and one of the first hits was a site with a name randomizer. Hickory Flat caught my eye. So here is in short the story of the birth of name of my town   :D

Mainly scratchbuilt with a couple of plastic/resin by a company that I can't remember (possibly Sarissa?)

Sarissa doesn't do resin buildings. I'm think the likely candidate is Arnica for good resin buildings.

no game report for this i am afraid I was too busy playing GM to take lots of photos.. but in the first game the law were and truly hammered , and the bad guys robbed the bank and escaped out of town.

Game two was classic Earps v Cowboys.. ended with two down per side and hopefully some newly converted OW gamers over the course of the day.  Needless to say the Undertaker was well employed.

Feedback over the course of the day was excellent, with guys really taken with the modelling and overall look , which was nice.

I have just "lightened" my GF9 rocks , makes them look less martian... just a bity of yellow ochre, beige , and ivory drybrushing did the job

I get my cards made by artcow.com , pretty usually pay around $10.00 USD for pack of 54 fully customisable , just wait on until they issue a free worldwide shipping offer and they cost me around £6.00 in the UK.

Love what you did for the cattle. Where did you get them?

They are 1/64th scale made by ERTL in scale terms they fit in alright with 28mm, cattle were I believe in general smaller then than now anyway. They are Hereford breed which were found in the west. Based on hexes so the herd or elements can random move on the roll of a d6.

I found them on Ebay from a US site cost $8.99 plus shipping. I bought two sets and in total paid about £18.00 . No import taxes as the original product value (not inc postage) was less than £15 gbp . arrived in 10 days. I was not able to find them at all in the UK.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PACKAGE-of-25-ERTL-HEREFORD-Cows-Calfs-Cattle-NIP-/260777896247?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item3cb792e937 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PACKAGE-of-25-ERTL-HEREFORD-Cows-Calfs-Cattle-NIP-/260777896247?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item3cb792e937)

They are a hard rubber/plastic and come pre coloured , just needed the eye painting in,matt varnish and basing

They have managed to kll a few guys who failed a reaction test when stampeding through town! The cattle rusting scenario I have run in the past was also good fun with the herd proving a real random element!

Ertl also makes a longhorns but they no longer make the big 24 pack and, apparently, they are now only available in one of the farm sets. You can occasionally find packs of 8 on ebay.

@Deedles: I think those cattle look right at home in your town, great find.  :)

Ahem, after seeing all the nice creations and takes on a western town by you lot here, I'm a bit hesitant to "show mine". I've always had a very tight budget and not invested a lot in the hobby, hence most scenery is paper craft (Eric Hotz' Whitewash City). BUT there's a change a gonna come! Since I've discovered the MDF buildings I've decided to replace the paper craft ones with MDF's. The paper craft are alright but there are two drawbacks IMHO, they warp easily and the b**ody chimneys come off all the time!!!

Now after all that yakking, I give you a rough outline of Ashbury, Colorado  :)!

Looks pretty good to me! We all start somewhere and you are planning a gradual upgrade of your buildings so it will only get better. As long as you can play a game and have a good time everything else is secondary.

fully agree

Legionnaire, fear not just build up bit by bit as you go, and simple scratchbuild is pretty cost effective too
Title: Re: Old West Town Roll Call!
Post by: Elbows on March 24, 2013, 10:31:54 PM
Legionnaire - you can also spruce stuff up with some home-made terrain.  Lollipop sticks and bits of wood can be had cheap from the craft store.  Old West stuff is one of the few things where you can get away with simply cutting/hacking and gluing and it'll pass.  My town is all MDF cut stuff for the buildings, but almost everything else is hand-made out of wood bits.

PS: Deedles, I'd been looking at ESCI/ERTL cattle...and I happen to have over 100 mdf hexes sitting in a box.  I may have to steal your D6 scatter idea, pretty slick!

My town is "Anachronism" and it is a doubly rough place.  First, it is in the rough stages of construction, though had it out of the deep end of the closet recently and am itching to get back to work on it.  Second, it is not a place for the tender of foot to trod heavily, no, sir.

And since I don't use photo hosting you'll have to follow the link to see pictures, just scroll down the page:

FA, I like the size of your table - the grand scope.  Tables of that size are one reason why my game allows models to move up to 24" in a turn (although that's pushing it, and with good die rolls).

I like it!
Title: Re: Old West Town Roll Call!
Post by: FifteensAway on April 06, 2013, 06:04:52 AM
Thanks, Elbows.  Fortunately I work in 15 mm so it's a more doable set up than it would be in 28 mm.  By the way, those photos of the town don't show a lot of the buildings in process.  I have several religious establishments that will be focal points for a scenario where the different denominations just can't take the doctrinal differences no more.  Also quite a few residential houses.  And certainly the livery stable, stage corrals, wheelwright, black smith, etc.  And a large stock yard where the cattle drives end and the rail trip begins for the 'little doggies'.  These won't be scratchbuilt - already have them, painted resin pieces - but there are several fancy houses, Victorian style, for folks like the Doc, the Mayor, etc.

Oh, and I've put together and posted a list of a bunch of stuff I've been collecting to decorate my old west town.  Same link as above.

Rewatched The Missing yesterday and need to build a nice box canyon with a place at the top for a group of defenders.  Yup, its time I got back to work on building Anachronism.

Hah, yeah I had forgotten yours was in 15mm, that would explain it.  I thought "damn he has a 12' table at his disposal..."  lol
Title: Re: Old West Town Roll Call!
Post by: FifteensAway on April 06, 2013, 04:01:23 PM
Well, that still incomplete 15 mm town you see in the photos is actually quite a bit longer than 12' but my table at home is 5' x 12' and can, at a pinch, be extended to 16'.  Absorb that and rethink my comment about 15 mm versus 28 mm.  And the real uniqueness is that my wild west collection may be the largest number of figures in one period I have.  I haven't counted everything up but it's a lot.  A pretty big lot.  Not for everyone since most people think of the old west as strictly a skirmish game.  I see it as so much more.  Now, if I can only get it all painted and the rules right, I'll never be bored or at a lost for something to do.

I like the sound of Devils Canyon it sounds ideal for a whole host of gaming scenarios

Canyon Diablo, Arizona originated as a railroad town in 1880 when construction was halted until a bridge could be built over the canyon. A further delay was caused by financial difficulties and it wasn’t until 1890 that the railroad bridge was completed. The canyon had earlier been given its name by a soldier named Lieutenant Whipple in 1853 when it presented such an obstacle to his thirty-fifth parallel survey party. Having to go miles out of their way to get across, he appropriately named it Devil’s Canyon. When the town was born, it took the canyon's name, which ended up being extremely appropriate for the reputation that the town would soon earn.

There being no law enforcement in the settlement, it quickly became a wild and lawless place as drifters, gamblers, and outlaws made their way to town. With the closest law enforcement being some 100 miles away, the settlement earned a reputation of being meaner than Tombstone and Dodge City combined, with many of it "citizens” winding up in the local cemetery. The saloons, gambling dens and brothels never closed, running 24 hours a day. The town comprised mostly of shacks with two lines of buildings facing each other across the rocky road on the north side of the railroad right-of-way. The "street,” aptly referred to as Hell Street, included fourteen saloons, ten gambling houses, four brothels and two dance halls. Wedged between these businesses were a couple of eating counters, a grocery and a dry goods store.

With a population of nearly 2,000, a regular stage operated between Flagstaff and Canyon Diablo that ended up being the target of many robberies. When Canyon Diablo finally got a peace officer, the first one pinned on a badge at 3:00 p.m. and was laid out for burial at 8:00 p.m. Five more foolish men also tried their hands at marshalling in this God forsaken town. None of them lasted more than a month in the position before they too were killed.
Boot Hill cemetery filled up fast, where at one time 35 graves could be seen with wooden markers and stone covered mounds. All are gone today, but that of Herman Wolf, a trader who passed away in 1899 and the only one to have died peacefully.
Once the railroad bridge was built over the canyon, the town began to die. Still wild, the remaining residents requested that the army take over law enforcement, but before they arrived the town was pretty much dried up and the lawless drifters had moved on.

I had better offer up my own small, but growing, town of Upsheet Creek:

Will get some piccies up of figures in a while or two. Likely planning on doing this with Paleskin as he is buying up real estate on ebay as if he is Sweringen ;D

I had an opportunity to lay out my full collection for a local paper who wanted to do a piece on wargaming for a club page. I tried to explain that Gettysburg or Jutland or Bannockburn could not be set up in fifteen minutes and the unannounced photographer would have to come back. They liked the idea of my 'cowboy town' and here it is.

Carefree, Arizona, where the only thing that flies is bullets!

Hickory Flat

I needed a name so I googled "old west town names" and one of the first hits was a site with a name randomizer. Hickory Flat caught my eye. So here is in short the story of the birth of name of my town   :D

I will post some pictures when my town Devils Canyon is more established, I only started building it a month ago.
I should have about 7 or 8 buildings finished in a couple of weeks.
Its a bit of a ghost town at present as I haven't finished painting any figures yet.
That's if I can work out how to post pictures. :D

Some great towns in this thread!  Very inspirational - now I'm dying to build some new buildings...

I dusted off my old wild west town in the last few days and we've had a couple of enjoyable games on it.  Here are a few pics.

Everything scratch built using coffee stirrers, bits of card, etc. over several years.

Hi

I wrote some construction details here way back here.

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=e13a3dd9600ac9074f9e16c07114e103&topic=2165.0

I modified the church a bit since as I had the front removeable but that was a pain in the ar$e and painted it pink after watching Appaloosa.

Since then I repainted them all and changed the shutters. I used some large tie wraps I found in the plumbing section of the DIY store.

Cheers

Latest conflict in Rattlesnake, Colorado:
The outlaws entered main street from the north while the sheriffs´ posse awaited them at the south end. As it was friday evening the railway had ceased work for the weekend and railroaders and citizens were all in the saloons...

While not very fancy,  the following is my 6mm scale town and a few figures.

Highland Spring

and two closer views

(http://i661.photobucket.com/albums/uu340/Skipper_JRS/100_3782.jpg) (http://s661.photobucket.com/user/Skipper_JRS/media/100_3782.jpg.html)

Both squares are mounted on 12"x12" tiles and kept in a project box.  The project stalled as I'm now considering upsizing to 15mm as it gets to be a pain moving figures with tweezers.

Skipper

PS.  An Early view this unpainted figures for scale.

Figured I'd throw these up...kind of "Drake's Branch develops" photos.

It all started with some scratch scenery and a Perry cabin (which sucks by the way, horrible kit)

Then I added some Sarissa Precision kits

Coupled with some of my buddy's stuff for our first Old West games we hosted at a Con.

Eventually replaced the Sarissa stuff with kits from Tri-City Laser while I was selling some of them.

Eventually painted some of both and slapped them on the table together, shown here with SnS in its early test form at Siege of Augusta a couple of years back.

Fast forward and almost everything has been replaced with 4Ground (previous towns all sold off to help other people build up towns!)

And there is a huge amount of stuff I've just completed so perhaps it's time for an updated picture...

Howdy y'all

Since this thread started I've added a textured terrain mat to my town "El Segundo" (page 6 of this thread.)

It is designed of a High noon style layout with a smooth area in the middle for a town with an intersecting road (mostly covered by the railway tracks in this picture)

And I renovated a few more buildings and found this picture. There are still some more which are missing so I really need more up to date photos

Man, I love all of the scratch built stuff you guys have on these pictures.  I wish I had the time/talent/patience to do that level of scratch building.  But for me, I will stick with 4Ground buildings.  I can get them assembled in a relatively short period of time, and I'd rather be playing than modeling.  Not that I've done any playing for the past 3 months...

Here's a pic of Zenda all laid out.  I have 2 additional buildings since this picture was taken, plus the Sassy Gal saloon is about 2/3 finished.

Hentzau, don't feel bad...I don't scratch build most of my stuff either.  4Ground makes some wonderful stuff, and as you said - no fuss, assemble and play.  To be fair I just received my Train Station and that thing looks...daunting!  lol

Added a couple of the new towns to the first page.

Added a couple of the new towns to the first page.

It's Zenda, Montana, if you want to get technical.  :)

And let me know what you think of the train station.  Despite it being my most looked for building from their line, I didn't really like it once they released it and didn't buy it.  I'll keep with my kit bashed under construction station for the time being.

I'm not sure my town qualifies as a town with only two buildings, but there is more in the pipeline. I think financial and space constraints will stop me getting a full town, and I'll have to go for small outpost/extended ranch - bit like some of the settlements in Red Dead Redemption maybe? It's certainly not up to the standards of the rest of this thread, but it's a start. I've got another Perry's Cabin/Shop on the painting table, plus a TTCombat moonshine distillery and a few more bits of scatter terrain to follow. I'll likely add a Sarissa Blacksmith and Adobe Hacienda too. I also need to get a gaming mat....

Like the street lamps Elbows - watched tombstone again and it has a night fight and shows lamps. Anyway these might interest some - working street lights see: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252197692981?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649

£3 for 12 depending on postage option seems reasonable - might be tricky to wire up in such a way to hide power supply etc.  They are 7cm tall so should be fine for 28mm?

Post by: Elbows on January 27, 2016, 12:02:46 AM
Yeah, that's basically what I ordered (different style) but I clipped all the cables.  I've no interest in running real street lamps.  But same idea, cheap lamps from China, cut the cords and I cut some bits off mine to make them a bit more plain.

Wonder if you could wire those lamps up to round 6V dog collar batteries?  It's been a long time since my Electronics merit badge, so I have a feeling it can't be that simple.  But the batteries would work great both as batteries and bases for the lamps...

Love your subtle changes to the Saloon colouring!

I can't take all of the credit, I was inspired by the work that Ivor13 had done.  I need to tone down the white rails a bit though, seeing it in the pictures.  On the table it's not so bad.

I have to say, the saloon ended up being the center of most of the fights that day.  Folks were running in and out of the saloon constantly, leaping off of balconies, firing from the roof, etc.

Hog Thief Bend

OK, so this is all your fault. I’ve been sneaking over to the Old West board from my usual home on the Pulp board for some time now. I’ve so enjoyed your Old West towns that you’ve forced me into making one myself! I’ll just post one photo here in the Old West Town Roll Call which shows the very beginning of Hog Thief Bend and then I’m going to start a thread on the board to show any progress (if any, I rarely finish anything).

(http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q645/Mad_Lord_Snapcase/Hog%20Thief%20Bend/Hog%20Thief%20Bend%20B_zpssbmd2zud.jpg) (http://s1352.photobucket.com/user/Mad_Lord_Snapcase/media/Hog%20Thief%20Bend/Hog%20Thief%20Bend%20B_zpssbmd2zud.jpg.html)

This shows the origins of Hog Thief Bend. The brothers Jeremiah and Obediah McGrog have been prospecting for gold in the hills above the Wette River valley. They have recently struck lucky and Jeremiah is dancing a jig for joy in his long-johns (he hasn’t noticed that Muffin the Mule doesn’t seem to like his dancing and is about to take executive action). Obediah seems so overcome by events that he appears to have stripped off and is dancing in the buff! Snappy, the terrier looks on in disgust. Hearing of this strike, the land agents have already moved in and are busy surveying the area for the township which will inevitably grow as news of the gold strike leaks out. Mountain man Pierre ‘LeGros’ Coqsure is concerned that this invasion of greenhorns will interfere with his trade in beaver.

All the towns in this thread have inspired me, so thanks to you all. Ye haa!

Beau Gus Junction

Named after the two failed Express Station men who settled there - nobody ever made use of the station and there ain't no junction.  It's totally Beau Gus.

We (Skirmish Wargames Collective ) have a whole county, Pima NMT, (we know the real one was in Texas) and a number of towns, with town plans and even schedules for the stage line running between them...will post some names and photos. The buildings are primarily 54mm 1/32nd scale, though we do game OW in 28mm too.

Just realized that my town isn't in the Old West Town Roll Call. My town is called Trinity which it seemed destined to be as initially I bought the Trinity First National Bank building from Battle Flag, then I joined my local club, the Trinity Wargamers Club which meets at the Trinity Club in Trinity Street opposite the Holy Trinity Church so I decided to go with the flow.

This got a bit weirder, I was thinking of having a back story where the original Spanish/Mexican settlement was called Trinidad but was anglicized to Trinity when the US took over. Then I was looking for a location for my town, I have some loco's and rolling stock for Denver & Rio Grande railroad so I looked at a map of the railroad and hey presto south of Denver is Trinidad. In the 1880's Bat Masterson and his brother Jim where town marshals there
and the Colorado Railroad War also took place in the area in the 1870's. So I have plenty of material to work into scenarios that could be vaguely historical.

According to one Cracked article, it's like saying "Give a hoot. Don't pollute!" in reference to the kind of "mess" made when passersby throw trash at a trash can rather than into it. The answer is that the relevant authorities show up at your door and hand over a trash bag to tell you that you've been sentenced to go clean it up...

The town was scratch-built, from mounting board and balsa, mostly around 15 years ago with a few later additions.  I don't have a fixed layout for it, so it appears slightly differently each time.  My miniatures (around 130 or so!) are predominantly the original Foundry Old West range and the buildings are scaled accordingly.  The recently painted Black Scorpion ones are too big, but I wanted to have at least one game with them.

Absolutely Brilliant and so refreshing to see a scratch built town and not one made entirely of MDF kits. ;D

Sad to say I don't have pics, as I don't have a place to set them up.

My Old West gaming is set in an area with three different "major" locations thus far.  There is a larger town, "Bishop" and a Mexican Village, Veradaz - think of the ones in the original Magnificent Seven movie for a general idea.  The hub of action is a smaller town, "Fletcher's Crossing" on the Rio Grande.  It is at a place in the river where the river is too deep and at times too fast to cross on foot/horseback and too wide for a bridge.  Fletcher set up a rope pull ferry boat some years back when some enterprising folks on one side saw an advantage to having such a crossing location close enough to be useful but far away enough from prying eyes to get too closely noticed.  Ain't saying that folks run things back and forth that the authorities or influential folks on one side or the other might have an objection to...arms, liquor, individuals being "sought", manpower, and so forth. Just rumors - nothing to 'em.

The start of a new town for my miniaturemen orc and dwarf cowboys, it.s small as every building has to be scratch built due to the scale of the minis 40mm ish.

"McGinty's Crossing" Set in the pine woods, influenced by "McCabe and Mrs Miller".

This one has been coming together over the last six months or so - mostly 4Ground buildings with a bit of extra wok on them ...

McGinty's Crossing, if I'm not mistaken, was the scene of much bloodletting at BLAM  :D

Great looking town that has fuelled a flurry of town building activity among certain LAF members, including me  lol

Well, I'm really liking Sweetwater - but maybe that is because I recently caved and bought the whole Blue Moon old west building set (actually, all of the 'sets').  Will be combing with buildings from Stone Mountain and Peter Pig to create a version of my town until I get around to making progress on the scratch built buildings.  Anyone care to guess which scale?   lol

Do like the name Rose Creek, though.   ;)

More, please.  Never enough Old West towns in miniature.

Oh my!!!  These pages are going to be bookmarked for sure.  The wealth of visual fuel for the mind is incredible.

I hope to make a small contribution in the near future.  Small in overall play area and in the scale I plan to use (1:00 or so).  To be more specific, I plan to use HO scale kits and 18mm figures (mostly Blue Moon).

Thanks all.

Herewith a pic of my Old West town, inspired by the fantastic towns I have seen here on LAF.

My town is largely made up of printed paper. But it is very cheap and quick to put together an entire town - I mount the paper onto foam board so the buildings are light and durable. Worth considering especially for players with many projects and playing multiple periods and or a limited budget.

Good looking!  You might want to check into Wargame Vault.  IIRC there are a few free guides with  suggestions for making paper structures more three dimensional.  Interesting and I think improves the appearance of the buildings especially if printed ones are mixed with others, but by no means necessary.

You can add De Lancy to the list.  It's currently under construction as detailed here:

I'm working on the second building and will be ordering some MDF kits in due course.

Rimfire, (Arizona Territory), circa mid 1870's.
Not too far from Fort Bohica, where B and D troop of the 25th US Cavalry Regiment are stationed to guard the area against marauding Apaches.
Among the establishments in Rimfire are "Widow Morley's Bluebird Cafe and Bakery", "Barber Joe", "Wun Hung Lo's Chinese Laundry", "The Aphrodite Bath House", "S&M Fine Leather Goods", "The Paradise Saloon", "Miss Melodies Ladies Emporium", and a host of others.
