Ged sent me a couple of his new 28mm Mayans...
A very nice figure to paint. Cleanly sculpted. Lots of character :)

Very nice. Looking forward to seeing this range fill out and those blasted Conquistadors.......too tempting by half!
-
Thats a cool miniature, but your paintjob is realy not from this planet :o :o :o :o :o
-
These are shaping up to be the nicest Mayans out there. That is also one seriously top notch paintjob.
-
Just great! you keep up this quality of art, and you will drag me into another era of gaming lol
-
Great stuff Richard :-* :-*
cheers
James

Very nice! Though I have to say I am never quite sure what people mean by "lots of character" lol
-
There is only one thing you need to do Richard, a large force of them!! Suits your pallette very well, the skin is super
-

That's a pretty good question. I have used it in the past to describe figures that 'come to life' when painted and become 'individuals' as opposed to figures I've painted that still look a touch flat and lifeless (my shit painting aside!). The Captain's superb PJ aside, this looks like a figure that has those qualities.
-
Loving the quiver. Delightful :-*
-
Love the colors on the bow and the jaguar pelt. Wonderful work.

Thanks :)

Well I know what I mean by it, although it is hard to define... ;)
Some wargames figures are bland, generic troops - not badly sculpted necessarily, although there are plenty of averagely sculpted figures still out there. But even where some sculptors have obviously tried to imbue a figure with some individual personality, this doesn't always come off. They remain neutral, impassive, uninteresting, however technically well executed (although there's an obvious correlation between lack of sculpting quality and technique, and lack of character in the finished model).
On the other hand, some sculptors - perhaps a majority these days - seem able to invest their models with a real sense of personality: they're like proper little individuals - not just mannequins. Some sculptors are better at creating these characters than others. Copplestone is a past master, so is Mike Owen. Others who shall remain nameless, can't seem to manage it. Their figures always just look like anonymous figures rather than 'characters'.
Give me a figure with character every time.

Richard
wait till you see the Warchief inspired by the film Apocolypto i cannot
wait to see him painted up in all his finery...........there is also a priest
and a swathe of other Mayans in "attack mode" as was their want.
i wanted figures sculpted with a sense of movement and vigor and i think
this has been achieved.. will post photos of the new recruits once
they are embedded at GringoHQ
again.brilliant job.... ;)

I seriously would love to see what you have planned for this range. I'm considering selling all my early medieval stuff to make room for it. I've already made a start on jungle terrain for my WWII Burma stuff so it's not like it means a whole new table. And I said no new ranges.

regarding the mesoamerican range i would like to do some of the more
unusual tribes as well as some of the big boys Incas and Aztecs in order to bring more of a differnt slant................
as for the Conquistadors these will hopefully be a fairly large contingent so my figures can stray into other eras.......
i have some suprises up my sleeve a wekk :D

Well put, Sir. I know what you mean, now. You are right about that figure that you have painted splendidly.
-
Beautiful work especially the bow quiver :-*
-
Nice work Richard :-* :-* :-* And yes character every day :)
-
Ged,
The paint job is beautiful, if a tad fantastical. I'm really interested in your Maya. Where can I see any of them on your website?
Also instead of Inca and Aztecs, what is really needed is some Mapuche. Very unique and interesting figures would be forthcoming.
-
Bowman
appreciate the interest and to be honest on the other thread there are five
painted samples of the initial batch of mayans to be released at Salute
i have received a second batch but the time is ticking so MAY have these
ready as well. Yep the Mapuche are fascinating........if you have any
pictures do post!....tough as nails and a match for all the other tribes
and the "white Gods" they are on the top five list... watch this space

Great stuff, Captain.
Lovely and, indeed, full of character.
That 'Bet Lynch' quiver is rather special too.
:-*
Ged: You are testing my resolve with this range.
I need some 'indigenous native' types for the forthcoming VSF thingy and these should fit the bill nicely.
The Captain is doing a great job as your pimp!
-
Bet Lynch is a great friend of mine, old boy. I had the pleasure to work with
her during a stunning production of Mother Goose.

lol
No, it just means I painted a couple of these as a favour for Ged.
Although I do have a bundle of TAG Aztecs - which are way smaller than this.
And about 150 sea dogs and swashbucklers... So I could do something along those lines... ::)
;)
-
Tempting isn't it :D

-
Richard..stonking paint job...............really pleased ..many thanks
actually i will be doing some of the more exotic/non/big/players tribes..
hence my request for Mapuchi info these guys look amazing almost neo
classical with their greek style helmets and they had cavalry...it extends
the boundries of mesoamerica hugely and means i can do some "late
conquistadors...colombian indians in gold armour....the deeper i dig the
more in drawn in. bang goes the trip to Venice!
