Wow! two awesome entries.
Lt. Hazel, is there any way we could coax ur skin recipe out of u?
-
For the skin I used VGC Dark Fleshtone - VGC Parasite Brown - VMC Sunny Skintone. Undercoat is black

Cheers 8)

another tough call :?
-
Yes a though choice for me too.
The Kings realy look great.
Lt. Hazel, one more where your own paint/color style becomes more visible.
The Slaver look realy dangerous and mean.
Good entries both!
-
It's really a tough call on these.
As a side note, can I ask who makes the apes and baboons?
-
Gonna hafta go with monkeys...I love monkeys.
...both well done entries but monkeys win for me every time!
-
It´s the same hut..now you know WHAT the Slavers defend

The Baboons are definately Obelisk I have some of those and I suspect so are the apes :)
-
Both are Obelisk. I adore the baboons and bought tht set some time ago. Unfortunately the apes do not quite pull it off for me. Distorted proportions somehow.

Hhm, Hammers, what do you mean exactly? Distorted proportions of the sculpts? Of the photo?
Here are some more pics of the apes: http://www.mini-universe.de/Darkest%20Africa/index.html
Just asking cause I always try to develop my photographic skills ... :)

Oh my, that's a tough choice. Excellent work by both of you.
The bases for the Kings of the Jungle finally won me over.

I think he means the figures, its the heads the upper and lower mouth parts (would they be lips??) are too big for realistic apes and make the head look small. I still like them though very menacing

Nothing wrong with the painting, mate, it is stellar. I am thinking about the miniatures. A gorilla in my mind is much stockier.
-
Yes, great painting, but the sculpts don't look like real apes. They seem very well suited to use as some kind of ape-monster, rather than the real thing. Perhaps something from a lost world, or a secret evil experiment.
-
Obelisk Miniatures, eh? Many thanks chaps. My spidey sense tells me that they'll soon be recieving an order from me.
All I need to do now is to find where my missus has hidden my credit card. She's been gardening recently so I'd best go and get my trowel...

It's not a long way, you're just there!
To all those budding explorers of African mammals: These apes are NO Gorillas. The range is called Darkest African FANTASIES and not What-Copplestone-didn't-do-in-Darkest-Africa or the cheap-alternative-to-Foundry - besides the silverback they do is far too big!
Nowhere in the shop it say "gorillas" They are called Lords of the Jungle - and they are.
BTW a gorilla standing on his front feet (hands?) is rarely taller than a human figure. These minis are about 4,5 cm tall, so considerably taller than that.
The other question which crept to my mind is: what is voted for - painting or sculpts? I know that you hardly can seperate them but you can mess up a good scuplted mini as well on the other hand expert painters like Admiral Benbow can even turn out a poor sculpt into a small piece of art (that doesn't mean the LotJ are poor sculpts!)!
So my vote is clear in favour of A.B. as he has a fantastic painting style and takes on unusual subjects.
From my point of view as a sculptor I vote only for the unusual and not those things you always get to see in competitions or on miniature painting sites unless they are done in an exceptionally frilling style.

Hazel, you're the man. Always liked your flags, but this is awesome! And you've done justice to the sculpts - Perrys?
A tough choice, though. Like gorillas very much, even administered to some projects to save their hometrees.

I like these "Kings of the Jungle" a lot. The painting is very good.
They remind me of the "Gorillas" in the Tarzan movie with Christopher Lambert.
They also remind me of my beloved picture clicker ( looked like binoculars and you fed the device with round dias and click them ) that I had when I was a kid.
I had the "Tarzan story in pictures" and the Apes looked also very similar to the ones that Josef sculpted.
I have the Baboons already...one day I `ll get me the Kings of the Jungle !
Cheers

I think it was called "ViewMaster" :) Long time ago. It gave the 3D impression.

Lurch...you saved my day... I had no idea how that little device was called and tortured my brain...
Thanks mate !
