Title: Bretonnian foot knights
Post by: Painting Princess on March 27, 2013, 06:04:50 AM
Hi all,

I've finally made a start on my forces for a Warhammer 3rd edition game I'm planning with Christian. My army will be mainly dwarves, but also a contingent of foot knights, as well as some wood elves. I will post any painting updates on this project in this thread in future :)

Started on these guys on the weekend:

Have posted the WIPs on my blog:
http://painting-princess.blogspot.com.au/ (http://painting-princess.blogspot.com.au/)

I've got a whole unit of these to paint! So far I've only done highlighting on the blue and burgundy guys' tunics. Added the bleached bone to half the top of the third knight's tunic after Christian pointed out he looked a bit Christmas-y with the red and green. I like how it's turning out so far.

Hope to post up some finished pics of at least these three and my gladiatrix too, over the Easter weekend. We'll see how many others I manage to do! Thank goodness for public holidays ;)

[EDIT] I've made the pic a bit bigger so it's easier to see!

Looking good so far, even though the picture is really tiny.

How large will this unit of foot knights be exactly? And will you be using all old metal minis? If so, that'll be a sight to behold indeed! 8)

I'll check in after Easter to see the progress... ;-)

I'll keep an eye on these. Always like a bit of old school.

Thanks, I've made the pic a bit bigger; you can also click it bigger on the blog too :)

Off the top of my head, I think it's 15 figures. It's a mix of original Citadel minis from the 80s and "ex-Citadel" Foundry casts. Same sculpts though.

I've also got a monk, which will be a character, and a musician, which I'm told is quite hard to find. Looking forward to painting him!

Nice work. :)

Off the top of my head, I think it's 15 figures.

Is that about average for any unit?  What about units in an army?  I'm seeing bits and pieces of 'oldhammer' leaking onto a few forums, and it's tempting.  But I think I'd be more tempted if 3rd ed skewed towards warbands - or at least fewer minis than the current trends of hordes and 40K apocalypse, etc.

Thanks, Vermis!

I'm not sure if that's the average ... I kind of just bought enough to have even ranks. I've already got about a billion of the newer GW Bretonnian minis that I got for my very first army (which, coincidentally, is still not finished!). I wanted this to be small, more like a warband rather than a proper unit. We were thinking along the same lines, of having smaller forces rather than a massive army. The dwarf units are also going to be quite small.

I took a couple of pics of the unpainted figures last night, minus the three above.

Maybe I'll take a few pics of the other units I'm planning to use in this game over the weekend ;)

Back in the day 20 foot to a unit was pretty average, 10 for mounted perhaps. If you were using the points system then 2000 points for an army was the norm. Then GW's prices went up and WD started to show smaller armies (some as low as 500 points) and units of say 10 foot or 5 cavalry being used.

If you look at the old RoC books they have sections on creating Chaos warbands of various sorts and they can be very small. Wouldn't take much to convert that to other races/army types.

Ta you two. :)

I've latched onto Kings of War (and unit bases) for mass battles.  I'm very indecisive and I don't want to go throwing everything up in the air again!  But if WH 3rd is as much fun at it seems to be, I wouldn't be opposed to a wee army to try it out.

On-topic: another thing that attracts me to oldhammer is all the oldschool minis on display.  That's a nice spread of metal, PP!  :-*

You've got yourself some Cool Old Guys there...the Talisman Priest is an old friend; AND you're doing a FINE job giving them a new lease on life...the green, red, & white knight is my favorite of the three. Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Thanks, Vermis! There are some really nice old figures - I like the character they have that some of the newer figures don't.

It's hard to do! I wanted mounted knights as well, but then I thought: "I'm going to have to buy enough mounted knights for a unit, and I'm going to have another Bretonnian unit ... too many minis!" It's got to stay small, otherwise we might as well be playing the current edition ... ;D

Thanks DeafNala, your positive comments and encouragement are always appreciated! :) I got the Talisman priest on eBay recently. He made it through the somewhat extensive round of eliminations to be elected Bretonnian Monk of 2013 ;D Took a bit of searching to find an interesting mini! I didn't want him to look too sombre or bishop-y ...

If you check out Foundry's Ebay store they've got their ex-Citadel stuff at £9 a pack and the same £4 flat rate postage as they offer in their web store.

Must resist... shiney...

Hello Princess, I can not wait to see these guys painted up, I love these old metal Citadel/Foundry knights. I have been itching to buy some for years now. I really like your painting style and know you are going to bring these guys to life (especially that Talisman cleric). I'll be watching this thread closely.

Cheers,

Thanks, Damien, for the lovely comments!

Sadly I didn't get as far as I'd hoped over the Easter weekend, despite finishing my gladiatrix. I have the unfortunate tendency to get all excited about "almost finishing my knights!!" and then being reminded that they also have shields ...

SO ... I have only fully completed one knight of the trio; the others are awaiting their shields ... Here he is:

And some detail behind him - the pic is a bit fuzzy:

You can also see some more pics of him on my blog: http://painting-princess.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/first-completed-foot-knight-for.html (http://painting-princess.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/first-completed-foot-knight-for.html)

Hope you all like him!

Nice pics all around. And I definetely like the idea of keeping things small. Painting and having to move thousands of models makes me feel rather uncomfortable. My attention span just isn't big enough I guess.

Coming along nicely. Middle one is my favourite. For the blue guy you could add a bit of depth to the gold crest with a brown ink wash.

Love them! They all turned out really well, I really like the bases, the like the colours you chose and love the hand painted shields. I have to agree with Mr.Stone-cold though, a little brown shading on the helm will do wonders for the blue knight.

Keep 'em coming,
 Damien

I love these old school knights! Fantastic paint job on this guy  :-* Now I hope this is not getting old but a small shading black wash would differentiate his helmet from his mail and give his armour more depth BUT it really depends on you and how you like your armour to look.

Either way, this is one of my favourite threads,

Thanks, Damien :) you're right, it could definitely use some shading. I originally had put some black wash on it and then I dropped the mini on my tiled floor when I was painting the scabbard :'( I became preoccupied with repainting his slightly flattened helmet and I forgot to do anything else! o_o

Looking at the pics, his head is looking a bit shiny :? Will definitely revisit this guy's armour along with the Blue Knight's eagle crest. I think he's just gotten his official name!

No, you can't! :?

Hmm, I don't think I'll be doing a mounted Bretonnian for the third edition army, but I do have a little something interesting coming soon and he will be mounted ;)

Then again, if I find an old interesting mini that is mounted, I might paint him up as a character :) don't really want a unit of them, as I've got lots of cavalry for my 8th edition Bretonnians (my very first army, which I never finished  o_o)!

Hi all,

I've finally gotten around to finishing another knight! This one's the unit champion:

As usual, more pics on my blog: http://painting-princess.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/a-champion-among-men.html (http://painting-princess.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/a-champion-among-men.html)

He doesn't have any grass or leaves on his base like the others because I haven't sprayed him and the yellow and black knight with dullcote yet, so I still have those little finishing touches to do, but I thought I'd put up some pics anyway :)

I also fixed up some of the highlighting/shading on the others. Here they are all ranked up:

Hope you like them!

I do like them! They are really looking good, loving the group shot. The unit champion is the best of the bunch (in my opinion), I really like the armour (shaded very well) the helmet crest (a very nice tan colour, give me your recipe please), the red shading is great and the face is fantastic.

Don't give up on this great project, I want to see massed ranks of knights,

But...  :o you changed the fab blue and off white to black/yellow! :'(
To each his own. I'm loving these older figs, I think they are full of character!

Thanks Damien :) the tan colour is GW Bleached Bone with a wash of Gryphone Sepia over it. Then highlighting with more Bleached Bone lightened with Skull White (or White Scar, whatever they call it these days).

Definitely will keep them coming, though I only have 15 figures for the foot knights, so I don't know about massed ranks! ;)

Thanks Matt :) haha I thought you were talking about the guy with the eagle on his head (who I did use blue and Bleached Bone - or off-white, I guess - on). That B&Y knight was always black and yellow. Must be the camera I used to take the photo of him the first time :? BUT at least now I paint make another one in blue and off-white to make up for it ;)

I was pretty impressed at the start but you are getting better with each one.

The only complaint I have is that you are proving that my eyes are getting worse.

The Knight of The Hand is probably the best one to date...the next one will be even better I'm sure. VERY WELL DONE!

I did that one for my erstwhile friend Buddy. For his Evil Cleric I had to modify the hand, making him more of a Knight Templar of the Finger.

Sorry, but I did that mini when it was a shiny new piece long before digital cameras. Buddy & the the mini have also disappeared more years ago than I'd like to think about.

I would imagine we're on the same page..I'd turn to another one if I were you. The popular phrase for the repositioned hand is "flipping the bird".

Sorry, but I did that mini when it was a shiny new piece long before digital cameras. Buddy & the the mini have also disappeared more years ago than I'd like to think about.

Sorry to hear that. At least we're on the same page :)

Hope you like the newest addition!

For the brushwork, color choices, & a WONDERFULLY expressive face, I'd say that's the best one thus far. He looks like he's questioning his career choice. VERY WELL DONE!

This guy is really nice, I like the yellow and blue combo, the armour turned out very well and the face is full of expression. Best knight so far? I think so.

Cheers,

Thanks SCL! It was fun trying out the highlighting on the shield :)

DeafNala: he does, doesn't he? My husband says he is wearing a quizzical expression ... Poor fellow, he must have seen a horde of orcs stampeding towards him or something ;D

Damien: thanks for the comments! I only saw your tip on yellow just now, which I will try out later on ;)

Thanks Imp! Glad you like him :)

Speaking of yellow, I think the yellow on the tabard looks great.

The face IS awesome. And the knights look more impressive with each one you put up.

Can't wait for the group photo!

He looks like an serious chap, cracking work Princess :-*
Dare I ask, what are you going to use them for,I'm guessing Oldhammer? I have some old Chaos chappies and some Broos(read beastmen) who haven't had a bash in years, maybe when I'm next in Sydney...Probably the year 2020 lol

Thanks Guy :)

Yes, we're planning to play a bit of 3rd edition once we have enough minis ready. Christian's painting up some orcs and goblins.

For sure! Let us know when you'll be up (though it looks like I won't hold my breath if that's the estimate! ;D )
