Title: War of the Ring Boardgame
Post by: Suber on April 01, 2013, 10:25:23 AM
I've been quite busy lately with this game. I was not ready to play with these monochromatic minis:

Not during my watch. ;)

So I painted them while doing any other projects, from time to time. It was the only way to preserve the little sanity remaining ;D.
Here you have the Free Peoples:

Really nice looking paint jobs.  I painted a couple orcs from my set, then I played a couple of games and decided it wasn't really for me.  Lots of fun toys though, and yours look fantastic.

Now that's a bit spectacular, and some dedication. :)  Round of applause!

Thank you all! :)
Here you have the bad guys:

Oops, yes, that's right, there's something wrong with one troll. I was stupid enough to let them dry on my window. Wind blew and woosh! Paratrooper Trolls! >:(. I recovered all of them but one, so I had to build it up.

Well, yes, little bit on steroids, but that was my very first attempt to scuplt anything from scartch, so please don't be too harsh on me ::).

Aaand the ugly bosses (in even uglier pics)

The whole bunch in my blog:

In a few days I'll tell you about the game itself (There's no point in painting all these if you are not going to play!)

Great work on the paintjobs; that will certainly improve the enjoyment of the game. It would for me... ;)

And awesome work on that resculpt there! Don't discourage yourself; it's top notch and hardly visible from the fotos; he just looks like a boss-type troll, being slightly bigger etc. From the pictures, it's hardly visible you sculpted it yourself, and especially for a first attempt, it's stellar if you ask me! 8)

Let us have a gratuitous picture of them all setup on the board now... :D

Daeothar sums it up perfectly, as it took me a few seconds to spot your one in the crowd.
Cracking work!

Super pjs on them all Suber  :-* Great dedication to paint them and to that top-notch level. It's a great game, have you played the Conan version of it?

Great paint work and amazing dedication. I love this game, but the Free Peoples minis look too similar. What a solution!

And impressive troll sculpting too.

...but the Free Peoples minis look too similar.

That does make it easier when you are actually playing the game though - no need to fish around trying to figure out which minis are whose...

Excellent paint job by the way!!

Also excellent sculpting there on that troll, although if you had contacted the manufacturers they would probably have been willing to send you a replacement?

I had a broken Stygian in my Age of Conan game and I was sent a replacement with no questions asked and at no cost.

Thank you all! :) It's been tedious sometimes, specially as I've been doing this for months, from time to time, taking small minutes from other projects, but in the end I think it's worth it. I'll post a game report soon, let's see if it was ;).

... if you had contacted the manufacturers they would probably have been willing to send you a replacement?

Oh, but where's the fun on that? (Yeah, I'm nuts ;D)

... have you played the Conan version of it?

Oh, man! There is a Conan version? I wasn't aware, I really need that!

There is a Conan version that uses very similar game mechanics, except that you can play with up to four different factions (Aquilonia, Stygia, Turan and Hyperborea). The game has not done all that well, but personally I really enjoy playing it and would recommend it strongly, although we have only ever played the two-player version. If you enjoy WoTR you will probably like the Conan game as well.

Have even come up with a couple of fan-made expansions of my own
here (http://noquarterbattles.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/ravenloft-expansion-for-age-of-conan.html)
and
here (http://noquarterbattles.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/cyclades-mythology-expansion-for-age-of.html)

There were some plans for an official expansion at one point but Fantasy Flight cancelled that

Wow - excellent stuff. I'm not familiar with the game but I want to be now.

Reminds me of the time I contemplated painting the figures out of my then favourite game - Risk!  ;D

I only ended up contemplating that madness by the way!

Thank you! :) Here you have the pic that makes all this worth it:

The game is amazingly close to the book, it really takes you to Middle Earth. Somewhat complicated, nevertheless; you have to carefully read the rules a couple of times before playing it. I'm pretty sure we did some things wrong, but it was utterly fun however. You can read my report here (with additional explanations on the game):

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2013/04/playing-war-of-ring-boardgame.html

And some pics that hopefully make you interested in the game ;).

The Fellowship starts at Rivendell...

Our particular assault on Helm's Deep
(http://i45.tinypic.com/nwy7wz.jpg)

The Witch King is back in Dol Guldur!

From Umbar...

...To the siege of Dol Amroth
(http://i47.tinypic.com/2ivyxw4.jpg)

Conquest of Erebor
(http://i45.tinypic.com/k1ckr5.jpg)

The Shadow is really strong in the game, the Free People's only chance is try to get the Ring to the Orodruin, they cannot stand in front of the armies of the Darkness, sooner or later they will finally succumb. As a matter of fact, in our game Sauron just conquered all the Free People's Strongholds, depriving them of any chance of win. In addition, Frodo was dangerously near of succumbing to the One Ring :?. The game really catches up the essence of the LoTR world, its dynamic is quite narrative. The diplomacy, the Ring 'corruption points', the Character actions, Gollum leading the Fellowship... Everything is very, very atmospherical.

So, if you have some hours to play (and some previous hours to learn how to), you might want to have a try at this game. Totally reccomended :).

I agree. This is a fantastic game that gives a very LOTR experience, as Frodo inches ever closer to Orodruin, hunted by Nazgul and more and more 'worn by sorrow and toil' as the strongholds of the Free Peoples fall to the Shadow's massed armies.

And yours looks amazing now!

Looks great Suber!  :-*

It's been ages since I last played the game  :'(

I guess you had the movie soundtracks playing in the background? :)

Suber! Somehow I missed this thread! Everything looks so good, I really like the pic with all the minis on the board. I am buying this game for Christmas (and it is your fault!).

Everything is so well painted, you should be proud of this project.

Haha, thank you all! :D

The first time you have to face the rules it looks a little overwhelming for a boardgame, but once you are on it, you can't but enjoy the experience. I've later noticed than the game is obssesively detailed to the extent that in fact the shortest way from Rivendell to Mordor goes through Moria (10 map areas) and I bet that the way you have more chances to win is following just the story, splitting the Fellowship up right after that and so.

There are a lot of options and actions you have to deal with, but once you get the dynamics, the game is just great. I had the same feeling about the Battlestar Galactica boardgame (and shamefully it's been ages since I don't play).
Of course I don't want to boast of the minis, but even this simple basic paintjob enhances the experience, much better than playing with 'plastic pieces' ;). And of course you need the soundtrack! That's essential! :D

Damien, thanks! :) But why are you waiting 'til Chrismas? ;D

I took a size comparative pic with a 28mm mini (the pic is awful, even for my standards, but you get the idea...)
