Title: Suggestions for ACW rules that would work with 6mm?
Post by: Anatoli on April 02, 2013, 02:53:18 PM
Hi guys,

My buddy Thomas has lured me into trying 6mm and we have settled for ACW since I think that is one of few periods I would be willing to sacrifice detail and painting in favor of large scale battles.

The thing is that we have no clue what rules we would be using.

The requirements would be:

1) Something that works with 6mm miniatures on stands obviously
2) Not too crunchy/rules heavy = fun over realism if need be
3) Plays relatively fast
4) Something that still represents the different units and formations on both side well

We don't need or specifically look for a set of rules that have a point based army building system. Armies can be different size and so on as long as the game balances this somehow.

I will be picking up some 6mm Baccus ACW minis at Salute later this month so the project will probably begin towards the end of April for both of us.

Thanks in advance  :)

The Polemos series ACW rules set(s) - two levels of play - from Baccus.

Mr. Lincoln's War (unfortunately OOP I hear) for even smaller battles.

Gracias,

Glenn

Edit for spelling.

The Peter Pig "Civil War Battles" rules are good, they are designed for 15mm on bases but could be adapted easily.
The rules are based upon units on stands 30mm square, and feature an excellent pre-battle sequence, with events such as scouting and supplies factored in.
the combat is quite simple to master,
and the armies that reach the table can often be of wildly different sizes, if the pre battle sequences go badly one side can have a huge portion of its troops held up in reserve or simply melt away,

Cool, the Peter Pig rules seem to have something similar to By Fire & Sword which I love, though I will read up on all the suggestions in this thread.

Thanks  :)

I've always liked the original 'Fire and Fury' ACW rules - only available nowadays as a rather low quality photocopy or second hand in glorious full colour etc.

Either way the content is great rules-wise. Each F&F 'unit' is a brigade so you will be fighting quite large battles. The newer Regimental Fire and Fury is a slightly different beast but follows the basic principles of the original F&F game.

I like the look of the Ppig ACW rules but I have found that Ppig rules can be rather tricky to follow as the writing/wording is not entirely 'water-tight'!

Definitely Fire & Fury - Brigade or Regimental. There is also a well supported Yahoo forum.
