Hi,
I recently bought All Thing ZOmbies miniature ruleset, and I'm currently building and painting the needed miniatures to play it.
I made the choice of 28mm plastic figures, wich is cheap and easily available, even in Europe.
I started the work with the zombie horde. It will be composed of about 60 zombie males (Studio Miniatures), around 30 zombie females (Wargames Factory), and a few crawlers (mix of both sets). So more or less an hundred zombies to paint.
I will not review again these really cool plastic sets (plenty of review are available), but I can say that I really like the price-quality ratio.
I plan to paint the horde in 3 stages (3x30 zeds, 20 males, 10 females), using speed technic technics. A zombie group should be painted in about 2 to 3 afternoons or evenings.
I made some trys concerning the paint scheme, and I found something between "fresh" and "plague". I will use that set of paints :

I started with a rough painting with olive drab, than a wet dry brush of graveyard earth, than an almost drybrush of kaki. Here's the result (just a sample of the 30 figures painted with same overall result) for now :
Tommorow I'll paint the 4th colour (dry brush again), and then I'll work on the clothes.

looking good, will be following with interest
-
Nice painting here and thanks for the how too and color choices. Its always good to mknow that :).
-
I like the tones. I'm an old school grey-green man myself, but then, I am quite long in the tooth.
-
Very nice!
I like the color and look forward to seeing more.
How do you like the ATZ rules?
I think they're a blast.
-
Thanks for the comments !
Here's the current state of painting process. I almost finished the skintone work. I use the paints I described, and then I made a slight green wash and purple wash (from citadel washes range, diluted with water).
Then with dark red (scarlett red) I painted the wounds and stuff like that on the miniatures. I also painted bones in pure white.
Here's the current result.

Next stage will be a brown wash on white bones and bloody wounds, and a few fixes. I will probably add white or yellowish eyes too.
Then, a last red higlight on the scars and wounds. Once it will be done (tonight) I'll start painting the clothes. the goal is to paint a basic color + 1 highlight + 1 shade.
Concerning ATZ ruleset, honestly I just readed it in diagonal. I like to play my games with 100% minis painted, scenery and stuff. So I'm not too focused on rules for now (I just make a quick reading to see what is allowed or not concerning minis choice, and possible scenery).
to be continued !
-
Nice work on those zeds.
8)
Watching with interest as I hope to paint a horde of my own.
One day.... :'(
-
I like your painting technique for the Zeds :) Very quick and effective. If I ever paint another bath of plastic zombies I'll copy it.
-
Thanks
Painting this way is fun, because you obtain results really fast. Of course, I'll never win any painting contest with these...But the overall horde effect will be there, and the gore zombie effect too.
I also wanted to make these immediatly recognizable on the table. So I used these muted paint tones, almost sepia. I will paint my survivors in a complete diferent way....A living way lol
I made the last washes on the scars and wounds. Now I'm waiting it to dry so I can start to paint the clothes and hair.
Since it's already almost 10pm, I'll probably start working on hair. We'll see.
-
Thanks

Yup; nothing worse than not making gains.
I love skin colour you've achieved here, I may well try and use something similar for the few zombies which I have!
Cheers
Andy

thanks !
Tonight I painted some shirts (chain work), but tired of chain painting all day, I painted almost (except the shoes) completly one zed "to see what happens" (people chain painting -regiments, squads, boardgames- will know what I mean). In one word, I wanted to see how the skin color will work with all clothes and stuff.
(night saturated pics, you cannot see the shades on brass)

It works (imho) pretty well, but it's definitly too clean. The biggest challenge will be making a realistic weathering without giving a messy feeling.
-
The brightness of the clothes really bring out the deadness of the skin - if you know what I mean. Its a great way of painting zombies, I look forward to seeing more.
-
Yes, that's a working effect. But it's too clean : how can a not so fresh zombie keep it clothes clean ? lol
-
looks good now but will be super duper when dirtied up a bit
-
I did the weathering effects and finished the first batch of minis. Cannot say that is speed painting lol I'll have to be faster next batch !

Now that I validated all process from main coats to weathering, it should be faster. I also have to see why my pics seems to be pixelized ???
-
Brilliant. What did you do in the end for the 'dirtying' of the clothes?
-
thanks !
Weathering is mostly based on drybrush.
First I first applied a brown wash on clothes. Slight wash. It give some "deepness" to the color, not really "dirt".
Then, I applied several drybrushs :
For dust :
1) 50% khaki 50% graveyard earth (dark earth)
2) 50% bronzed flesh 50% graveyard earth (dark earth)
for mud/dirt :
wetbrush with pure olive drab
For blood :
wetbrush in scarlett red, and then a sepia wash

Here's the last update for today (and probably no new update before sunday) :

As I imagined, it's significantly faster now. The figures are simplier than the first ones (only one shirt, no jacket), and now I know the good paint mixes, the "working" paints on black primer, etc... (it's been a long time since I didn't painted on black undercoat).
To be continued...Maybe tommorow morning, more probably sunday. I hope to finish that first third of my horde during next week (so I can take a break and start my wip fantasy old school adventurers project).
During the next weeks, I will go from one project to another.
-
Great looking (?) bunch of walkers, and nice skin tones on the zombies.
I'll be watching this thread.
Keep up the good work!
-
this is really working! Your turning out nice figures really quick!
-
Not that quick, since I didn't made any progress this week :?
This week end I'm afraid I will not have enough time to progress too !
I can't wait to have some free time to paint some minis. I'd like to start my old school fantasy project too, and continue my scenery work.
-
Painting started again ! The only good side of my current unemployement, I've got more free time during work days lol
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290207_zpsa52438de.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290207_zpsa52438de.jpg.html)
Basic coating is made on all the remaining zeds of my first group (around +30 figures). As I thought, now it's faster. It should be done wednesday.
I should also receive my plastic survivors at the end of the week. So I'll be able to play my first games soon (if hopefully ATZ can be played with around 30 zeds...).
-
All basic coats and black lining is done. Now it's time for shading effects (I'll try some woodstain to save some time). The figures will be finished before week end, so I'll be able to start my fantasy project. Next week, to change a bit, I'll will not paint 30 more zeds but some survivors (if I receive my order soon).
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300226_zps0c4aee44.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300226_zps0c4aee44.jpg.html)
-
That looks like a really effective way to paint zeds. Nice job so far
-
Thanks !
I added a coat of woodstain, not bad but not perfect, my stain seems to be a bit defective, it dry sometimes orange ??? But anyway, here's some pics.

I also mate varnished them. Now it's time for hightlights, then weathering, and the first 30+ zeds will be done. I hope to receive my survivors soon.
-
Nice start to the hoard.
-
Thanks !
The batch is almost done. Here's a preview :

Last things I need to do is weathering, dead eyes, and base drybrush. The minis will be finished tonight.
-
They look horrible! In a good way, if that can be said about zombies :D That's a really nice horde of zeds, will look good on the gaming board. Next stop the survivors?
-
Thank you !
Yes, you're right, next step will be a sprue of survivors, I received my box today :D
But I have to finish these zeds completly first.
-
Hi,
The first batch of 30 "regular" zombies is finished ! Here's the (bad night light, saturated) pics of them (I'll make better ones when I'll do my batreps this summer). For people discovering this topic, the men are from Studio Miniatures, the women are from Wargames factory. All are from multipart plastic sets.

Next ATZ related projects will be 30 new zeds (with customization/sculpting work this time), and a first squad of survivors (wargames factory minis).
edit : 29 not 30 zeds...OUPS I forget one zed on my desk ! I need to finish it >:( I think he tried to escape alone... lol
-
Do look mighty fine... well as fine as one can look as a zombie :D
The ladies seem to be bit taller than the gents?
-
Yes, the women are sometimes a bit taller, and especially the fact they are wearing high heels for some of them make them even taller lol
It's why I used diferent kinds of basing to make a good overall look.
thanks for the comments ;)
-
well done. Inpressive stuff. Keep up the good work.
-
Thank you !
Here's some bonus spooky photos (in fact I just missed some daylight pics I wanted to show you lol ) :

fabulous.

Thank you !
I'm happy you saw my figs, because now I simply RUINED them with a bad acrylic spray varnish >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
I destroyed hours and hours of work, simply because I was too lazy to varnish them by hand, like I almost always do. Now the figures are almost white :o
I'm so angry against myself. I wanted to have a smoke for the first time since august 2012 (but hopefuly I resisted).
I don't know what to do. I hesitate between punching my own face, or burn the minis. Until I decide, I'll have a beer.
-
Although I fell bad for anyone ruining figs with varnish, you really have to make sure you have the right stuff
I paint models for clients, so you can imagine what it would be like if I ruined the figs with varnish, but I always use a spray
Make sure you shake vigorously first
Sometimes a second spray can save the effects of the first
Which brand did you use?
-
I was using a regular acrylic spray can from hardware store. I used it before on miniatures with no problem. Maybe the can is too old.
I'll try to save the figures with toothpaste and brush. The varnish made some "dust" on the figs, maybe I can first remove a bit of it, then try some methods to make the figures darker (maybe a dip).
THe only thing I know is that I will not paint them again. No way lol
I'm less angry now, I'll try to find solutions.
Thank you for your help.
-
I'm currently trying 4 solutions (using one zed as sample each time) :
brushed mate varnish
brushed gloss varnish
toothpaste + toothbrush
pharmaceutical alcohol (rubbed with a cotton tip).
For now it seems that alcohol is giving good results. I have to wait it to dry. Not as good as before I made sh*t with this varnish spraycan, but "ok" once I'll do the 70 other zombies and the first 30 faulty ones will be together...
I'll keep you informed since it can be usefull for other people.
edit : it seeems that the alcohol solution does not work anymore once it dried.
edit2 : toothpaste works not so great (toothpaste is an abrasive, like car polish, well known from slot car modelling, for exemple). It cleans only the edges of the mini.
Gloss varnish doesn't work much. Mate varnish works pretty well.
For now the best result (waiting for complete dry to validate) is 1) rubbing some alcohol on the mini 2) once dry, brush some Arts liquid acrylic mate varnish. Of course I will not have the result you can see on the photos I posted, but it's average OK to put in a 100 zeds horde.
Let's it dry and see if I use this technic on all the minis.
-
Yep, when you put on too much varnish the best way I have found is to got back over them with a brush and varnish. Once the varnish liquefies, your job then is to get off as much as possible with the brush. Use soft strokes with the brush so you don't zap the paint.
It's a pain in the arse, but it works.
-
thank you,
It's why I used alcohol : since the spraycan varnish was acrylic-based, alcohol works pretty well to remove it.
My chance is that the varnish is fresh (less than 3 hours), so rubbing some alcohol works " a bit".
Finishing with some acrylic brushed varnish make the trick. The figure obviously lost details (especially thin ink pinstripping and some washes) but the result is decent (once again, I'm trying to convince myself that it still 70zeds or more to paint, so it's not such a big deal).
Here's a pic of the before/after (rubbing alcohol + liquid varnish).
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5080311_zps2afc4bc6.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5080311_zps2afc4bc6.jpg.html)
I think then I'll make some fine touches with citadel washes if necessary, but I think I can say that I saved everything I could lol
-
that's not too bad. In a way you are lucky it was zombies and not something like Eldar. After all, it doesn't matter too much if they look a bit grubby.
-
Good stuff, mate! Really like the dark, grimy look of the Zeds.
-
Thanks,
that's not too bad. In a way you are lucky it was zombies and not something like Eldar. After all, it doesn't matter too much if they look a bit grubby.
Exactly. And some of the zeds are not that bad too. They lost a bit of details as I said, but that's ok for zombies.
-
I was going to ask about the bases you used, but the varnishing problem is more important...
If you have a dusty look to the spray (this goes for primer as well as varnish), it can be because of environmental conditions: too hot, too dusty, etc. That sometimes seems to cause the spray to dry before hitting the figure, so you get all the little spray particles landing without spreading out.
With that said, one thing that sometimes works is simply to put more varnish on - sometimes even from the same can! Putting on a proper, even coating seems to level everything out and fix the problem.
Another piece of wisdom (which I know I do not always follow myself, with some past disastrous results) is to always do a test first, for every spray can. Spray one mini, or even a piece of cardboard if nothing else.
Good luck. I hope you can salvage at least some of your work!
- H8
-
Good result there
I'm glad it worked out not too bad in the end :)
-
Thanks for the kind words all of you :)
Tommorow I'll make some pics of the minis. NOt that bad, thinking how they were a few hours ago !
edit : concerning bases, I base all my figs on washers now. I use diferent types of washers, so I can easily mix "heroic" and "not so heroic" scale. And I think it's more good looking than thick bases, giving a more natural look, less "museum statue" feeling (personal opinion). It also give more stability to the plastic minis, and can be sticked on a magnetized board if needed.
On the male zombies, it's particular since the bodies came with integrated base. I kept them and added a washer behind.

Here's some (really) final pics of the first 30 zeds lol

As you can see, the result is OK. On a tabletop army painting quality scale, if before varnishing it was 6/10, now it's around 5/10 IMHO (...this last statement will remind something to french people who like humoristic tv show Kaamelot lol).
In the salvage process, I lost some washes and ink effets, especially the "pinstripping" (black lining between diferent parts of the figure, wich is a really old school but eficient tabletop painting technic lol). But, overall, it's OK when I take the figures as a Horde and not individuals.
In fact, I think I'll will not do any black lining on the next figures. The result is still good, and I'll save A LOT of time (black lining is the longest stage in painting these figures).
To be continued. Probably some survivors, and my first customized (green stuffed) zeds.
thanks for the kind words and support !

oups, double post, sorry

Hi,
I started to work on a small group of survivors (5 minis). Why 5 ? Because I've got 5 perfect size washers for basing them lol
I'm really impressed by the wargames factory survivors multipart set. I see multiple uses for them :o
Here's some pics to show you some details of them :

Next step : building the survivors group.
-
:o Missed this thread but great results so far. I will follow this with a lot of interest because I am planning exactly the same project and I am saving up to buy exactly the same models... Not to play ATZ but Zombicide. I will steal uhhh borrow some of your ideas :D
Regards,
Za
-
thanks !
Perhaps you should take a look on ATZ. I didn't play it already, but it really seems to be a great game.
-
I think I have the PDF somewhere mhhh.... Those survivors look really good.
-
ATZ is a great rule set.
I love playing it and look forward to seeing your AAR.
If you havnt seen it already, look up a blog by a bloke named Vampifan.
His blog has an excellent series of ATZ games AARs that really explain ATZ well.
-
I can't wait to play. I bought the rulesets a few months ago, but since I choosed 28mm scale, everything is a bit slow when you're a solo gamer as I am.
I painted the gaming board, some zombies, and tonight I built 3 survivors of the first 5 planned (not so easy to find cool settings!). I still need to make a few city buildings to be able to start ATZ properly.
Concerning vampifan, yes I know it, it's one of the websites wich made me interested in zombies miniatures gaming (and chain reaction system)
-
Here's the first pics of the 3 survivors I already built.
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110346_zpsd8915165.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110346_zpsd8915165.jpg.html)
I'm currently workin on 2 more survivors :
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110348_zpsaa2bdd8e.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110348_zpsaa2bdd8e.jpg.html)
Here's also a pic of scale comparison. It works pretty well with my zeds, no soucy.
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110353_zps11aac458.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110353_zps11aac458.jpg.html)
I didn't clean them with sand paper or whatever, I just glued the pieces in place lol I still need to improve them (and probably add green stuff details).
The fun part building these survivors from the sprues is to think about a possible life background for each one. What kind of weapon should he carry, etc...
The bad side of this is that it takes me ages :D
-
Zombies look ace nice job on them so far look forward to seeing the horde grow. The survivors are great a start. I'm hoping to get this set soon.
-
Thank you !
I finished my survivors group. Finally, 8 members. I tried to kept a "very first degree" look into them, not funny at all :D I tried to think about their background, building them. They are people I can imagine surviving (at least a few days/weeks) the zombie apocalypse.
Woman and children : the woman is a WF zombie female, using the "less zombie" face and body from the set. I gave her a baseball bat, a "weapon" easily available in any house with child, to protect her kids. The small kid is converted with the cop hat (removed with cutter and sanded down). His weapon is the long range carbine, wich is an obvious choice for a physicaly weak character.
The teenager found (who knows how) a AK47. He's one of the heavy support of the "team".
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110358_zpsa88f6f56.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110358_zpsa88f6f56.jpg.html)
The "cold stone" guys : some silent death from the crossbow, firepower from the cop gun. I wanted that these characters with a feeling of self control, so I choosed faces representing that feeling.
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110360_zps60b42398.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110360_zps60b42398.jpg.html)
The big guys :
These are the muscle of the group. 2 of them are carrying back pack for gear, because they are the physically strongest characters. They are carrying both close combat and short ranged weapons (the uniform guy doesn't for now).
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110356_zps3ef5b41f.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5110356_zps3ef5b41f.jpg.html)
I still have to fix some defects, add some details (from sprues but also sculpted in greenstuff), and modify some minis (make the women shoulders thinner, give the fat guy some running shoes.
-

I don't use sandpaper on minis!! Assuming you mean fine grade wet and dry? You really shouldn't need that on plastic mould lines. A good blade at a 45 degree angle will do the trick.
Good luck
-
I use car painter sandpaper without any problem, from 240 to 1000, on metal and plastic minis ;)
It's the same thing that using a metal file, in my opinion.

Which is known as wet and dry. Thought you might be using something corser when you referred to 'sandpaper'.
Cheers

Ok, I didn't know the real name of the material I was using. A new english word on my (short) list lol
-
Here's a small update for my survivors.
I made some green stuff work on a few minis :
Back pack for the "muscle" character :
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080228_zps89793192.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080228_zps89793192.jpg.html)(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080227_zpsc8a9d6b7.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080227_zpsc8a9d6b7.jpg.html)
Same addition on the crossbow character :
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080226_zps02226ec2.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080226_zps02226ec2.jpg.html)(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080224_zpsd174928c.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080224_zpsd174928c.jpg.html)
And on the fat guy character too. I also added some real shoes, I just cannot imagine someone surviving more than a few minutes with the original shoes he was wearing lol
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080221_zpsb5135525.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080221_zpsb5135525.jpg.html)(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080223_zps2ff6de10.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6080223_zps2ff6de10.jpg.html)
I also made some green stuff fixes on other miniatures. I need to wash them and sand defects, and then I'll be able to start painting.
-
Last update : I modified the "muscle character" (I need to find better names lol) shirt :
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6090230_zpsf7c92de7.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6090230_zpsf7c92de7.jpg.html)
Now a few figures need a bit of sanding, and I'll be able to start painting. Probably next week (I have to finish some battletech mechs first).
-
Really nice honing up/detailing on those miniatures! Are you going to give similar treatment to all of them?
-
thank you ,
Are you going to give similar treatment to all of them?
Not on the first batch. Like for the zombies, I'll made some customizing work on several minis, but not every time. Since in these kits we have a limited amount of parts, customizing become necessary if you want to keep each mini unique.
-
Nice putty work, check these for backpacks, I have been using them on my survivors and like them a bit better than the ones that come with that kit. I hope they come out with female survivors soon.
http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=47_50
PS do you know who makes the female fighter with the unicorn shield that is behind the kid survivor?
-
Thanks for the link. The backpacks are indeed more detailed. I believe I'll have to customize mine a bit more lol
Concerning the fantasy mini, it's an old school ral Partha 3 stage adventurer, called the "female human warrior"; I believe. I've got the 3 stages minis (beginner, intermediate, veteran). All my adventurers for my WHL project (solo fantasy light rpg) are divided in 3 miniatures.
You can see them here :
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=52664.0
It's one of my other current projects. I've got 5 projects for now :
Zombies project (this topic, with Wargames factory, studio miniatures figs ); ATZ ruleset
fantasy miniatures light rpg project (light rpg with old school adventurers, 3d dungeon, and D&D minis monsters); Warrior heroes legend ruleset
Super Heroes project (heroclix repaints and customs, 3d homemade city); supersystem 3 ruleset (+ bits of chain reaction and homemade solo rules)
Scifi miniatures light rpg (necromunda minis, urban wars minis); 5150 new beginning ruleset
Battletech solo project (battletech minis, gzg minis); official battletech rules (TW, battleforce and QS) + bits of chain reaction and homemade solo rules.
-
Thanks and GREAT job on all the sites your repaints are really nice. Wish more companies would do 3 stage figures.
-
Good to know you managed to save your first batch of zombies.
Being a slow painter* I´m quite jealous because of your output!
I also like that you are going to customize your survivours with green stuff.
Great work!
*And I mean slooow. Like "4 zombies in 18 month" slow ::)
-
*And I mean slooow. Like "4 zombies in 18 month" slow
So slow that you maybe a zombie yourself ? lol ;)
You should try to use "cheating/clever" (depands your state of mind) quick painting technics on your minis. No shame about that. I understand to take time for heroes and stuff like that, but a zombie horde is just...dead flesh lol
readymade washes, inks, drybrushs, dipping, etc... 8)
-
The survivors are ready to paint (I used grey primer) :
Mother and sons (wich can also be used as 3 separate characters, like a nurse, and 2 kids):
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6100280_zps25baf2f4.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P6100280_zps25baf2f4.jpg.html)
Notice that the woman is a customized "zombie vixen" from wargames factory. I simply used the thinnest arms from the men survivors sets.
The big guys :

Bad cop, the silent Crossbowman, and prisoner :

So slow that you maybe a zombie yourself ?
Good point! Might explain while I take to much care in painting zombies. But you´re right. I shall try some quicker painting, thanks for your tipps!
Notice that the woman is a customized "zombie vixen" from wargames factory.
You might argue that it´s a vivid pose. But to the zombie-trained eye, it was all to obvious. ;)
-
Speaking of quicker painting, here's the last zombies (about 60) I have to complete. I decided to boost up a little my painting time. So much projects, and nothing really progressing.
Since I'm a 99% solo gamer, I had to make some decisions. The most obvious is to sacrify miniatures painting quality to complete more armies/groups, and then, be able to play more games.
The first chapter of this new politic is my ATZ zombie horde. Tonight I build all the remaining male zombies; and now I'm currently building the remaining females. Females take more time, because of the very thin parts of the kit.
Of course, I'll keep quality painting for heroes (since I play almost exclusively 2HW games and Supersystem 3, I'll make my best painting on stars/super heroes/adventurers). But I'll try to speed up painting on monsters, NPCs, and scenery.
I plan to complete the zombie horde this week, using spraycan paint, stain and all "cheating tricks". I hope I'll progress on my cityscape too.
to be continued...
-
I did 100 Zombicide zeds in a month. I glued them all to strips in 5's and then did them assembly line style by color. It also helped to vary the paint scheme. 5 with brown pants and then all different color shirts. You can do say 5 strips of different color pants, and then have 5 different colors for the shirts. Then hit one of each zed on the strip with that color shirt till you got them all. You'll have 25 done in no time!
-
Yes, home factory painting, it's a good idea, and it's what I did (more or less) on my D&D monster company (from Wrath of ashardalon boardgame box) and on the first 30 zeds. On the D&D minis, I did my fastest painting record (complete box painted in 20days)
But I want even faster work lol So I will use several speed technics :
spray paint (not only for primer, but for color too)
stain (from brush on "dip" technic)
drybrushs, washes
etc... ;)

The figures are built and ready to paint. TOnigh I added some texturized paint ("3d effect") on the bases. It's a easy trick to improve a mini.
Tommorow I'll be ready to paint. First stages will be done with spray can paint, then a few details (really a few), a wood stain "dip" style stage (but brushed), a few dry brushes (if needed) on bases and hair and finally a coat of mat varnish.
HEre's the current pics. As you can see, the minis preparation is minimal. No molding lines sanding, filling or whatever. It's the horde overall aspect I look after.

Pretty nice-looking group. Nice work on differentiating them all!
-
Thanks !
Once again, I almost ruined my figures with some spray paint lol
I tried a new technic of "ultra speed painting" using a selection of spray paints to make the basic tones of the minis...And you bet it was a disaster. lol
So I tried to hide this true horror behind a good coat of white primer, and start again. This time, it's "just" speed chain painting : make groups, than paint skin, than clothes, etc...
Flashy colors are a choice : since the next step will be a dark wood stain dip (actually, using a brush instead...but that's the historical name of the technic), so if I want to keep some light in the figures, I have to choose bright tones first.
It's far from being completed, but I hope to finish the base coats tommorow night, at least.
-
Low parts of the figures are completed !
Then I "randomized" as much as possible the minis, to make groups to paint the bodies tops.
I also kept a big "white top" group (see last attached pic) to save some paint time. Once it will be stained, it will be brown/dirty.
I also started 4 special zombies : 2 policemen/guards and 2 american prisoners.
I hope to finish the bodies tommorow. If I've got enough time, I'll complete all the pre-dip operations too (hair, shoes, details).
-
I'm interested to see how the yellow skinned ones come out after the dip/stain.
-
I hope to obtain a group of radioactive zeds or something like that.
I tried to create first a few days dead group (first 30 zeds), then I'm currently creating 3 ethnic groups (pale white (or asian), tanned white, black, and 2 "special" groups ("chemical" green group, useable as few weeks zombies too, and "radioactive" yellow group).
The whole set of zombies should give me a nice sample of apocalypse lol
-
Here's the last progresses :
First I finished the base coats yesterday. THen I brushed stain on all miniatures. It was a long boring job, I believe dipping would be more appropriate for this miniatures mass.
The overall result is OK. Some of the figures are pretty nice already.
Now, I'll have to spray a coat of matte varnish, and do the finishing touches (bases, weathering, blood, etc...).
-
Here's some sample pics after I sprayed a coat of really high quality matte spray varnish. The overal result is good enough for a 90+ zombies speed painted horde, in my opinion.
The yellow skin zeds still be a bit too Simpsons-ish for my own taste, but I'll correct that. lol Maybe adding some pustules and infected bubos too ?
Tommorow (or later in night) I'll add last details. Since woodstain bring some "dirt" already, I will not add extra weathering (except on black clothes). I will add some "putrid" washes (mostly green, purple and blue citadel washes) on wounds, and of course, some blood painted in scarlett red (best undead blood color IMHO).
I will probably also add white or yellow eyes. In zombies movies, eyes always impressed me, so I believe I'll do some basic eyes too.
The minis should be completed tommorow. Here's the pics :

Hi,
I finished the minis tonight...Or almost, I still need to finish the bases. But I'll do that tommorow afternoon.
Some teasing pics. Samples of each type of zed (crawler, male, female).
I'm happy with the result, regarding the time I spent on them (I started september 23th, 60 zeds).
-
great work :)
-
Thanks !
I finished the 60 zeds group tonight. Here's some pics.
I'll post pics of the complete 90 zeds horde soon. I'm happy of the overall result. The new 60 figures mix well with the 30 first ones too.
-
Here's pics of the complete 90 zeds horde. Now it's time to work on the survivors painting.
-
Great! I have to paint all my stuff. It looks like all the good movies...
-
Thanks!
I guess I'm like everybody, having a pile of grunts, cannon fodder I never paint, and painting just a few heroes or masterpieces one by one lol
A few months ago, I decided to keep my "fun" projects on side, and seriously work on the big not so funny chain painting projects :
zombies, dungeon monsters, basic scenery, etc...
Once it will be done, I'll be able to work on the fun stuff : heroes, nice central scenery pieces, etc...
-
Looking good. That's a mighty zombie hoard you have there. It reminds me that I need to glue more zed's together and get painting again.
When it comes to survivors though, I go for quality over quantity. I prefer good quality metal figures as I believe it gives players an attitude of preservation for the better figures. I also give them a more detailed paint job to add to this attitude.
-
thanks
Concerning survivors, I'll paint them with more care too. But I went with these plastic minis first for using then as NPC/grunts, or game demos.
Later, once this ATZ "basic set" will be done, I'll order, occasionnaly, a good looking mini. But I like the realistic look of these. I want to keep a "very first degree" look and feel in my setup (it's why I modified the big man shoes, for example).
As a solo gamer, with no personal fortune, I'm always doing maths. Same thing for my dungeon crawler/light rpg project (using WHAA+WHL ruleset): I bought cheap D@D plastic minis for monsters (from D&D adventure games) to save money (even if I enjoyed painted them, and think it's an underestimated range, but that's another story), and then, paid a little more for my adventurers (classic ral partha metal minis).
-
I didn't progress on the minis painting (I'm busy with scenery and some fantasy projects), but today I found 2 interesting vehicules doing my shopping.
The first one will be usefull in a warehouse scenery I'm planning to do, the other one will be usefull for escape-style scenarios.
Of course I'll repaint and convert the 2, to match my figurines painting style.
-
Nice finds both of them, forklift could become a nice get-away vehicle as well :)
-
The first batch of survivors is completed. I just still need to matte varnish them.

Who makes the fork lift
I want one!
Keith

A great bunch of survivors.
This is coming together very nicely indeed.
:-* 8) :-*
-
thanks,
Concerning the fork lift, unfortunatly I trashed the box of it, and no trademark or name appears on the model itself.
-
It looks like the same forklift I have, which is a Siku. German brand you can buy on ebay.
-
Here's the last pics of the survivors. Day light, varnished minis.
-
Lovely.
You have made those Wargames Factory Survivors look great!
:-*
-
I just scrolled through yor entire thread!
That's two great threads of yours I somehow missed in one morning!
:-* ;D
-
I really like wargames factory products. Great value for the price. I'm just a bit disapointed they didn't made one box including 15 males and 15 female survivors, instead of 2 boxes. But I will probably buy the female box in the future, to use them as ATZ survivors, but also supersystem civilians (and even 5150NB civilians, with a few scifi tweaks).
I'm preparing a bikers gangs based on the survivors minis I still have with more customizing and resculpting, they will be cool ;) The last minis I'll have will be unarmed civilians for the games I was speaking about before.
-
well done ! and thank you for your advice ,i think i go Studio miniatures sprues >:D
