Title: Speaking of Orcs... our quick Orc bannermen mods (pg 3 human bannerman fin)
Post by: Jevenkah on April 17, 2013, 05:47:49 PM
We use a large horde of Nick Lund's orcs (purchased from http://www.mirliton.it/) as one of our major Orc races, and didn't have enough bannermen to take the field.

I picked a troublesome spearman and a couple of my old school favorites from the Grenadier Battle Orcs, and demanded mods from my husband. I'm quite happy with the final figures he made for me. I have step-by-step photos on my blog: http://swordandsorceryRPG.com

The fellow on the left I think came from a Grenadier blister pack. (Anyone recognize him? I'll sleep easier tonight.)

"We" is also 2 dedicated players who game with us once a month.

We've played several different campaigns in our home-brew world through the decades and orclands have frequently been the theater. The orcs in our world are just like men. They are our dark side of humanity.

Like men, there are many factions and classes. There are savage orcs, tribes of orcs with iron-smelting technology, and there are fully civilized orcs who live in cities and deal with humans.

These bannermen mods are Iron Orcs, of two different Great Northern Tribes. They are currently united against our player-characters, humans in the disputed southern lands in our campaign Sagas of the Gautrian Kings.

I'm in the process of getting this info, with lots of pix, all together on a blog. Little bits at a time.

I'm finding many other orc fans out here!

Here is one of our urog kings, Valden the Ruthless, surrounded by his bannermen:

The Old Orcs look TERRIFIC sporting their FINE paint jobs & SPLENDID banners. They bring back memories of the hordes of minis I did for my erstwhile AD&D Group...people & times long gone. Aside from the melancholia caused, VERY WELL DONE!

The models are well funky, cool stuff.

I wish 'my' little gaming group was a bit more dedicated to getting long lasting campaigns and stories coming out. Having said that I manage to cancel as many games as everyone else in the group.

Jevenkah,
I salute your Nick Lund horde - and some excellent banners there!
I was fortunate enough to have some of the later Chronicle standard bearers with variant flags as well as converted some early Chronicle orcs to PJ film-style Uruk banners when the films came out.

and a combo of the lead-foil and misc parts from my bits box

Seeing your horde reminds me to inject some cash into my own horde and boost the numbers!

Thanks all!

The models are well funky, cool stuff.

I wish 'my' little gaming group was a bit more dedicated to getting long lasting campaigns and stories coming out. Having said that I manage to cancel as many games as everyone else in the group.

We've averaged slightly over 1 adventure per month for the last 30 months. It's worked well for so long for a few reasons:
1) the blood-bonds in our group (besides my husband and myself, there's his cousin).
2) because of that, there's only 3 schedules to coordinate, and I bring out the calendar at the end of every session.
3) the world has 20+ years of history, characters, maps, photos, *.doc files AND THEN all the landscape and minis that surround players as they walk in to our gaming space.
4) I think most importantly we have players that are dedicated to having a fun time when they are here gaming in our house.

The Old Orcs look TERRIFIC sporting their FINE paint jobs & SPLENDID banners. They bring back memories of the hordes of minis I did for my erstwhile AD&D Group...people & times long gone. Aside from the melancholia caused, VERY WELL DONE!

I hope some are good memories of painting the great features on these guys. It's hard thinking how fast the time does go by, though. Again, we've been lucky to have found players as into our game as we are.

I enjoyed playing spot-the-figures-we-have with your horde. There's something I find so chilling about big forces of orcs!

But I don't remember this single one...

Thank you, getting closer to solving it.

Here are Vendel Orcs which we use in our world to represent the orcs of Nil-ith Horn:

These bannermen were made before we had the epoxy my husband used to make the Vangen orc banners with the Nick Lunds above.

I'm glad you're enjoying the figures and blog. It's great to put our world all together in this format, and see it be of interest to folks who don't play in it. Please, leave some comments or questions too!

Saturday night we got to play and had the perfect opportunity to get the new orc bannermen some action.

Our player characters' Kildarian (http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/populations/kildarians/) allies were besieged by a joint force of Vangen orcs (http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/populations/vangens/ (http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/populations/vangens/)) and Nil-ith Horn troops (http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/populations/nil-ith-horn/ (http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/populations/nil-ith-horn/)).

The Vangen orc bannermen lead the charge towards the palisade:

Thanks a bunch everyone!
Nice collection of miniatures (with awesome paint jobs I might add) you have amassed.
Looking good!

Thank you! The collection is a result of 30+ years (my husband started young) of scouring the racks & web for minis that "fit" our world. Also, since we play with them, they get handled and worn so older paint jobs get touch-ups now and again that seems to keep everything looking good together.

Awesome photo

Thank you! That was a night of many pictures. (I love digital media, shoot 70 to get 4, no cost for film!) This pic in particular worked right off the bat. That didn't stop me from snapping several different angles just to be sure  o_o.

I visited your blog again as I am most impressed by your work. Thanks for the closeup you put here on the thread, so nice to see them enlarged for detail.
Thanks and your welcome, Oleary. The blog is constantly expanding, I'm trying to set it up more like a website so new players (and curious visitors) can find areas of interest with ease, since I myself have a terrible time with tags. Something I need to work on.

This is a great way to play -- the living campaign is an art form that is hard to find nowadays. I salute your dedication to your unique world.

What ruleset do you use for your games?

Thank you. We are so very lucky to have dedicated gamers. I have to give a shout out to Blaythen, he's my husband's cousin who has been with us since the game was played with a battlemat and index cards. We have other long time gamers; they aren't on the LAF, but they are still awesome and show up with smiles on their faces.  :)

We use Mongoose's Conan ruleset that came out of the Dungeon & Dragons open license period (3? 3.5?). We are very influenced by Robert E. Howard to begin with, and the low-magic aspect, along with rules for armor that seem "realistic" made the ruleset fit our world hand-in-glove.

Patrick, what impressed me about your game (sorry name escapes me) was the fun aspect of the diverse minis you can use. Inclusive to whatever your group desires. Happy gamers=  longer campaigns.

I LOVE the Group Portraits. Your Campaign is HIGHLY motivational & inspiring. Keep up your SPLENDID WORK!

Thanks! I love pictures with lots of figures too. The massed collection is a part of collecting I've always enjoyed! I'm so glad you find our campaign this engaging. Your feedback is exciting and inspirational itself!

Great paintjob, and for sure you know how to take inspiring shots with your camera!!

Thanks! Really it's taking oodles of pictures when you're learning. Then as you improve, you still take oodles of shots to get it "Just Right." We do have an awesome tabletop with recessed eyeball spots above it. (My husband & his dad built our house; if I had a nickle for every time my father-in-law asked "You're sure you want to do that?" I could afford more overseas minis.)

I enjoy my camera, but I know others here just want to get the mini posted. My advice would still be, take lots of pictures, with different settings, when you find one that looks good read the metadata and then write down what worked. Now you have a starting point to experiment with the next photo session. (Not to belabor a point, but PM me, I'm happy to share what has worked for me.)

Thank you again everyone! The comments are encouraging, intelligent, inspirational, and really make me want to go take more pictures!

I just browsed your site, and I've got to say your collection of "townsfolk/peasant" miniatures is astounding! That is the one element that really brings a village scene to life, at least for me.

My problem is that I can't find the time to paint up a couple dozen peasants, because I'd rather use that time to paint stuff like orcs, dwarves, dungeon monsters and other scary stuff!

There's nothing like a full-on cavalry charge to try to dissuade besiegers on the open plains! That is a lot of horse flesh. I hate painting horses too. My husband (Teshub) does a much better job. Matter of fact, I had him paint my PC's horse when I did the mounted & on foot versions :)

Thanks for the awesome compliments! Other folks go out, we've always stayed in and painted or modeled or gamed and spent fun money on minis for a long time now. I will keep posting pics; I enjoy sharing our toys.
4 more bannermen to find!

But if you don't have the peasants, who will the orcs threaten? Seriously though, I'm glad to hear they make the scene stand out for you. We just got a load of animals from the just-about-defunct Megaminis; they should add even more character.

I may have mentioned this before, but I LOVE Group Portraits & action scenes. A combination of both is a WONDROUS way to start my day! Thanks for the jump start!

My pleasure! You've given me quite a few happy smiles from your work! More action scenes to come, then.

For those of you following the Teshub and Jevenkah Prepare to Play Fantasy Warriors saga we are one half step closer to playing this weekend. I need human bannermen on my side so my husband began conversions for me. Please don't freak out if you recognize the figure and would never grab a specific character out of a rare set and take a drill to it.

OK, that last part was really for my benefit. I took many deep breaths before handing him over. But as you'll see, he's going to be fantastic! And I need to have bannermen! And he's sat in a tray/box for decades!

He is a Julie Guthrie sculpt so great care was taken when removing the spear to keep the detailing on the boot and hand. Then came the drill and a wire spear with sculpted flag was inserted and figure primed. Yes, now I can see the thumb print on the flag.  o_o Gotta love megapixels.

He'll be getting painted this weekend and there is a step-by-step on the blog:
http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/crafting-counter/human-bannermen/

I'll be posting our paintings step-by-step too. Not because I think our way is the best way, but lots of folks we know in RL (read: non-gamers) are coming to the blog and asking how we do it.

Comments and critiques appreciated, especially ones related to the best ways of removing fingerprints from epoxy once it's been primed and blackwashed.

Julie is an excellent sculptor. I love the work she does for Reaper and when my daughter asked me if there were any female sculptors I showed her both Guthrie and Garrity's work.

I have no idea how to get thumbprints out and I wish I did as I've left quite a few on my recent work. Hope you have a grand time this weekend  :D :D :D

Either GW's liquid green stuff (thinned and brushed on) or a Milliput wash (mix a tiny blob of Milliput and either dilute it with water, then brush it on or use a wet brush and pick up small amounts of Milliput to brush that on).

The Old Boy looks much better as a standard bearer than a spear man...CLEVER conversion work. Have FUN with the painting!
On the finger prints: if you used Milliput or something similar for the flag, you can lightly file or sand the prints out. With Green Stuff, I take a hobby knife & draw it over the prints against the grain. In either case you'll have to reprime.

I can identify with the fear of converting a now rare miniature. When I started gaming 50 years ago (where did all that time go...sob?) I converted Britains Ltd. minis into 18th Century figures. As conversions, they were worth nothing. If I had left them untouched in their boxes, they'd be worth a small fortune. C'est la vie, eh?!

Thanks for the support, DeafNala. I repeat to myself, "They're only things if we don't play with them. Never mind if it could have funded a small army." (Lead army, of course)

Thanks ink for the suggestions. I think it came out great!

OLeary, I have adored Julie Guthrie's work for decades! I always admired the fact that she could keep her own distinct style (which I find more delicate than most) in what was predominantly a male's hobby/industry when she started.

With the completion of this bannerman, we are ready to play tonight!
