Some close of shots of yesterdays game at Salute.
For the first time many Sky Martian clans have banded together and in strength have launched a disciplined attack on the unsuspecting Earther Great Powers in Martian Capital city of New Victoria. The surprised British, French and Japanese rally their defences as returning expeditions by the Royal Geographical Society and Illustrated London News Overseas Reporting team try to make it back to the safety of the city.
The Daas Ak Maa fly over Allan Quatermain and Lord Belborough in their Belborough Industries Light Perambulation machine as they attempt to make for the safety of New Victoria

The Raas Taa Farri Clan from the Southern Martian Mountains, (a very dark skinned clan) fly towards the Japanese Defence platform

The Raas Ak Naa skiff is shot down, but the Trimsman manages to land the craft without casualty, its warriors spring from the deck onto the battlefield intent on enaging the French sailors outside the walls.

The Daas Ak Maa skiff takes a direct hit to the stern which knocks out its rudder, the skiff drifts helplessly over the battlefield. The crew however soon manage to descend by rope to the ground below.

The Parrott gun manned by French sailors brought down several Martian skiffs with accurate fire. Good shots those Frenchies.

The interior of New Victoria, showing the many warehouses and pump houses.

The Eee Bii Guum clan(from the Northern Highlands) descend from their skiff onto the unfinished railway viaduct and charge towards the Earthers

A view from behind the walls of New Victoria. British sailors under the command of Lt AA Milne man the ramparts.

French sailors and Japanese troops man a Hotchkiss rotary canon, using it to devastating effect on the Martians charging to meet them.

The Rass Ak Naa close with the French sailors, routing them from the table, but are themselves cut down by French Impervious suits, designed for vicious hand to hand fighting

The Kuun Ee Lingaas Clan descend from their skiff to massacre the Parrott gun crew

They then scale the wall and rush a unit of British sailors manning the ramparts.

:-* :-* :-* for the display
>:( >:( >:( cos I missed Salute and didn't get to see it in the flesh!!
-
A cracking sight to behold, VSF fisticuffs in style at Salute. :-* :-* :-*
Well done chaps.
-
So nice and a fun looking game.
Love the shots of the skiffs in flames. :-*
-
Marvelous stuff! :-* Sorry to have missed Salute this year. :(
-
But how did the battle end?
Gracias,
Glenn
-
I love the details - on this board and miniatures.
-
:-*
Very cool.
I really like how the various Martian clans each have their own look and how that is also reflected in their skiffs.
VSF... done 1st rate!

What rules were you using ? Gaslight? Battles by Gaslight?
We use Battles by Gaslight for our big games.
Fuzzy.
-
I spotted Bullshot in one of the photos so I bet my life they use GASLIGHT.

lol
No, we didn't use GASLIGHT. we have finally managed to move away from it. :)
We are using our variant of Sharp Practice, lots of changes to reflect the weapons, steam tech and Martians, but same mechanics.
-
Hmmm curious :)
Why did you "move away" from Gaslight? I'll have to look at sharp practice.
Cheers
Fuzzy.

Lovely photos. It looked like a great game. But tell me, where could someone pick up those fine Red Planet Miniatures' martian figures and skiffs and the Oshiro warehouse and pumphouse buildings that seem perfect for VSF, EotD and gothic horror? ;)
(I do know, by the way just incase people were thinking 'but the idiot's already said where to get them in his own question!'.)
-
Utterly breathtaking!

SP fits more with the way we like to play games. The last few times we played Gaslight the turns were taking far too long. We were finding the games too slow.

I can point all to the figs and buildings, since the entrepreneurs seem to have dropped the hint.

@Malamute I'd encourage you to expand your observations on Sharp Practice in the Rules sticky; however, when you say, ' lots of changes...' I consider that a major cautionary note. You made Gothic Horror: Vampire Wars work! :o
Actually, anyone knowledgeable who wanted to start a general survey of rule sets there, given the explosion of new items, would earn my gratitude.

That terrain is amazing! It is awesome seeing it all put together. :-* :-*
Thanks so much for sharing the photos.

Very impressive, love the Martians and the terrain/scenery is awesome.

Also, humans have (very slightly) more chance of repelling a close combat attack with our variant of SP then with our variant of GASLIGHT :)

Wonderful game – it was so nice to see the end product after watching it grow and mature over the past few months through the camera lens of its proud father, Mr Bibbly. :-*
It was also nice to meet the luck people playing across the table, Malamute and Bullshott – (thanks for the jelly baby) – well played gentleman.
So you are real 3D people and look nothing like your 2D avatars! lol
The Mars back drop was an excellent idea and was constantly in demand, as so many people were eager to take away their own photographic memories of a great piece of war game art.
Top that Mr Bibbly – challenge - roll on next Salute. :D

Apparently, next year the viaduct and railway will be completed ...

With working steam train? Now that would be impressive. ;D

Very, very, cool.
Lovely figures, great terrain.

You know he likes a challenge ;)

I would also love to know more about the changes you made to Sharp Practice. Any chance you could shed some light on them?
-
James, SMASHING! Just smashing! Looks like you guys had a blast, especially that martian skiff with the 2 fire damage tokens on it. :D
-
Great looking game. :D
It was certainly getting plenty of attention on the day.
-
It was lovely to see in the flesh on the day. Great effort all round.
-
Nice to see the back drop made into the final cut of pictures. Your minion was hard at work, every time I passed, trying to get it into peoples photos lol
Nice to see all Jim's hard work in the flesh. Cracking looking game, well done all round.
-
I loved the look of this table at Salute, well well done.
Can you tell me please, did you manage to get hold of some oversized sheets of plastic card somewhere or are they just two sheets joined together, because they look bigger than the A4 ish sheets I have here if they are not joined (and if they are, where did you get them, if they are just joined, good work!!)
-
Which styrene are you referring to?
cheers
James
-
I think he means the Wills dressed stone. I have to agree that getting it to match up across multiple sheets is a pain.
-
The only place where I had to match it is the canal sections and most of the is underwater so you don't see it anyway :)
All of the wall/viaduct sections are just under the sheet width so no matching was needed although it does mean short sections, but conversely it does mean easy storage :)
cheers
James
-
You've managed to get the courses level on each section though which is a feat in itself. The sheets I've used have never even been straight! I've had to trim the edges to make it level and then getting the irregular courses to match up as well.....
I just used riveted metal strips to cover joins.

It does mean a lot of left over strips of between two to seven courses but they have proved useful for other projects and the canal of course.
cheers
