Title: Imperial Navy Marines, a tentative start to a new project.
Post by: davidmbrits on April 21, 2013, 09:09:01 PM
Greetings Fellow LAFers,

This is my first post, having been a long time lurker, and now I have something to share! Here are some Imperial Navy Marines I painted, ostensibly a landing party for 40k/VSF/Sci-Fi in general. I have been planning a series of linked narrative games on a skirmish scale and this is the beginning of the project.

You can see more pictures at my blog http://zenartminipainting.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://zenartminipainting.blogspot.co.uk/)

I have some questions which the collective knowledge of the forum might be helpful in answering. I am looking to play skirmish scale, and 40k, besides being rubbish anyway, doesn't really do what I want it to. I have been thinking of either using Necromunda, or using something by TooFatLardies, like a sci-fi mod of Sharpe Practice, or even Chain of Command when that launches. Games with a degree of friction appeal to me.

Has anybody used TooFatLardies' Quadrant 13 rules? How do they play? And how useable are they for small scale actions?

Perhaps there is another set of rules that I am not familiar with which might be better suited?

Also, and this probably belongs on the VSF forum, but I am keen on using these guys for VSF too, is there a set of rules that would be appropriate? Again, the remit is skirmish scale and fun fun fun!

I think the (40K) Imperial Navy call their shipboard fighting men "Armsmen" rather than Marines, otherwise they might get confused with you-know-who.

I like them, though, whatever you call them, and those figures are perfect for the job.  :)

Thanks Plynkes, I knew there would be a name for them. Some people have been rather confused when I call them Marines. Armsmen just seems rather awkward a word.

I rather like it. It's like "batsman." But then again I'm a bit of a cricket nut.

Welcome to LAF, by the way. I do hope you'll stay and post more of your stuff. Even though I don't actually play 40K these days, I am rather keen on the fluff, and always like to see what folks are doing with 40K models, especially things around the periphery of the main game like this is. Must be a nostalgia thing, I guess.

For what it's worth, I've played 5150 and I really enjoyed it. Though I'm pretty sure the game I played was just called 5150, it didn't have a colon and a secondary name. An older version, perhaps.

I like the idea and they certainly look pretty damn good.

Could you post more pictures of them with the light hitting them front on?
I am pretty sure they would look even better then.
 :D

An impressive way to introduce yourself.
Welcome aboard.

Plynkes, I like cricket too, and Armsman is growing on me. The Latin would be Armator, which I like because it plays on Amator, lover. Might be a name to use...

Although I don't care much for the GW games, exceptions being Necromunda, Mordheim and Battlefleet Gothic, I do like the 40k Universe a lot. So I'll set my initial narrative campaign there, even if the rules aren't GW in the end.

Glenn, thank you for the links. Have had a look and you have my attention Sir. I like the fact that there is a space ship ruleset too. I actually preferred Battlefleet Gothic to 40K, back when I did play it. Definitely something to look at, and with a PDF what is the excuse?

Mason, I am try to build a lightbox to take some good photos. If by some stroke of luck I am not slaving away in the salt mines too much this week I might get a chance to buy the necessary lamps to make it happen. As soon as I do the pictures will be up.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I don't have a club or a regular gaming group, so this forum is my ticket out of the vacuum.

Lovely painting  :)

Have look at In the Emperor's Name. It's a free ruleset for small skirmishes in the 40k universe, which includes the Imperial Navy in its book of retinues. I think the new osprey steampunk rules are based on its mechanics.

If you like necromunda, try having a look for the free expansion 'inquisamunda', that has also sorts of 40k peripheral goodness in.

Great looking paintjob and the models are really nice too... Only thing I find to be a bit of a let down is the clumsy standard GW weapon designs of 2nd edition 40k.

Very spiffy looking chaps!  :-*

Did you consider or have tried out Killteam rules?

Well Mason, you asked, so here are some more pictures...

Oooh!
I did, didnt I?

And very nice they are too.
I love your choice of figures and the colour scheme works a treat.
 :-* :-* :-*

In fact, I think those Mordians are put to much better use this way.
The ceremonial aspect of their uniform works much better in your rendition as Armsmen than as footsloggers for the IG.
Very nicely done.

Mason, my thoughts exactly. I find that the lack of webbing or any real field kit makes it hard to believe these guys operating in the field at all.

Pocoloco, I have not. Where would I find these rules? I don't even own a 40k rule book anymore which belies how long it has truly been since I actually played.

There are plenty of kill team rules in pdf format in the net. Dunno if you need to have some edition of 40K rulebook though. Currently don't have one myself either...
