Title: Display game in Kapiti, New Zealand
Post by: Arteis on April 20, 2008, 10:13:55 AM
I did a very small static display at our public library on Saturday, as we're trying to drum up members for a new club, the Kapiti Wargames Club.

The 'game' (it was static, so no game-play involved) features my ships, one based on the Disney 'Black Pearl' toy, the other from the Pressman 'Weapons and Warriors' game.

The pirates are by Foundry, and the militia and other accessory characters by Front Rank, Perry and other makers.  The buildings are mainly scratchbuilt.

The scenery was thrown together in a few minutes using a small green cloth on top of a patterned sea-cloth, along with some rocks from the garden and some local beach sand.   Trees include palms from the Pressman game.

The game depicts a pirate raid taking place, while the militia are blissfully unaware as they parade in front of the local gentry, and the navy are peacefully sailing in their brig on the other side of the island.

In the bottom pic, you can see that my daughters enjoyed the display.

Fantastic!

Where are the buildings and the cart from? They look scratch built.

The buildings are indeed scratch-built, apart from the tower, which is converted from the Pressman game.

The carts are by Conflix.

Very atmospheric. I like the small town and the troops parading in front of it. Which make are those damsels? I know, the two on the last pic are from your forge, so I mean the miniature ones with umbrella...

I can't recall the make of the ladies and officers watching the parade ... but it is a very old company that has recently been resurrected by a guy in (I think) Sweden ... I'm sure something will jog my memory before too long.

Yep, in real life they are the Gardes Françaises alright:

But for this game, they are some sort of Hollywood-inspired local governor's militia!

I just remembered - the officers and their ladies are Willie Figures.

You can see more pictures of them here:

Very nice, simple terrain, but very effective :)

As Malamute says: what a practical but good looking layout. That's clever, that.

Very impressive - especially for something "thrown together"

The Willie figures seem to fit in well with the more modern 28's, so that's something worth exploring.

I like your sea-cloth. Was it "home-made", specific wargames terrain or a lucky find at a fabric store?

Nice work Roly. I hope to see Blackbeard and Henry Morgan make an appearance soon.

Cheers

What beautiful work! Even if a "throw-together" it is a very appealing one, as witnessed by your young onlookers. Great job!

I'll also echo the compliments for the ranks of the government troops. Very appealing display, that.
