After voting I found out someone got we to vote against Zoogla... :o
-
I think that Zoogla's zombies are technically better, but I'm so delighted to see a good paintjob on these divers (and fish) that I had to give them the nod.
-
WoW, these deep sea fish are absolutely amazing.
Great job Grimm.

I just have to say.. WOW ! :o
i'm gonna try those 'rawhide' tones on my next Z....
-
Yeah, Rawhide is 'the' color for Zombie skin in my eyes. I just guess it was not a good idea to post Zombies twice in a row. Unfortunately I couldn't finish my the ones I had in mind :x Next week...

I found this one the most difficult. I love the composition of Grimms Photo, but prefer the painting on Zoogla's. In the end my vote went To Grimm. Too difficult to call :?
-
Agreed, another very tough call, what with Grimm's fish and suits and Zoogla's stripes and zombie flesh. Sya, is that some sort of eely deep sea fish a little bit to the rear, left, in black? I only just spotted it! 8)
-
yup, the second set of zombies was missing the Wow effect, something that Grimms setting definitely had. No doubt about Z's painting skills, but this beautiful diorama forced me to vote for Grimm (and yes I know this competion is about painting, but I am only (mostly) human... :-))

I had the same problem. What to choose.
Better technique or subject in my main interest.
The second won.
QUESTION:
How do you make the decision to how to vote, when is a really tough decision:
Is the subect depicted or the overall impression?

There is no rule, but I go for the latter.

In this "painting" contest, more than in any other, I feel greater liberty to vote for things other than technical skill. Having read over The Prof's introduction of the first event at least three or four times, it seems pretty obvious to me that this event is intended to celebrate uniqueness of miniatures, diversity, humor, skill in tying together a theme, and backdrop (something I should pay more attention to), as well as painting.

YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Yes, this is getting tricky!
In at least three of this morning's matches, there were entries which were less technically adept than the opposition, but somehow more evocative.
But it's a painting competition, dammit! :?
I guess there's no right answer.
Personally, I'd love to be able to take those crystal clear, forensic shots against a white background. Unfortunately my camera is simply not up to it. No manual exposure setting, and no white balance - so my only tactic is to try to take reasonable pics of my figures in a setting which gives some context or tells some kind of story.
It's an interesting dilemma anyway, and makes for some variation!
-
I am not sure if it is only the camera, from my (small) experience with taking pics from minis it is most of the time the light source (or better sources) that make the difference. Do we have a thread that pics this topic up (or maybe some of the more experienced photographers share their secrets, common Zoogla!)?
-
Congrats to the both of you for wonderful talent, however, Grimm wins on the nautical theme 8)
Outstanding and very well done!

Well, it should be clear now to all how to get Helen's vote, what with this and her comments on Hammer's entry.
All the nice girls love a sailor,
All the nice girls love a tar;
For there's something about a sailor --
Well, you know what sailors are!

Yes, in season 1 it was furry animals. Now it's the sea.
I'm thinking of a team of sea lions for the next round.

My thoughts exactly. Painting = Zoogla, Theme = Grimm
Both photos are great but the underwater theme is not only original, it's brilliantly executed! Good job to both!
