I shall look forwards to seeing it Hunter.

I have a couple of companies in mind. Here's one I want to work on ...
Pinkertons:
To find the real power in the United States follow the money and look for the rail barons, industrial tycoons and shipping magnates. To further their aims these men hire 'private detectives', the most (in)famous of which are the men of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. These 'detectives' are normally seen to guarding persons or items of value, or occasionally to break up strikes or to 'move on' people living on land required by rail companies. Some of these companies of detectives may be found abroad while performing 'guarding' duties; often as a cover for them to kidnap, kill or steal on behalf of their masters. Some of the detective companies have also been infiltrated by the US Secret Service.
This gives me an alternative to the Wild West Show company, somewhere between Wild Wild West and the Pinkertons in Ripper street, something like the following:
*A couple of Secret Service leaders
*Detectives with pistols/carbines/shotguns
* An engineer (not a Pinkerton, but an employee of the group's employer) - with some useful steam tech
*A tough close combat specialist - possibly a Native American loaded him up with talents to make him into a werewolf type (Reaper do a nice mini with hat and shotgun)
Options include:
*horses OR steam vehicles
*upgrade for marksman with hunting rifle
*upgrade to give one detective dynamite
*upgrade one detective to medic

Thank you for posting the guide, I'm going to see if I can come up with something when I have the book.

I've got a Company builder spreadsheet that I have everything programmed into Craig. I can send it over if you like?
-
Two of my planned Companies will be 'made up' (Imperial Japanese Diplomatic Corps and the Fist of Doom) and it is great to see that the 'official' way is pretty much the way I was going anyway.
Has anyone made up a Company Roster sheet that the technologically challenged (and lazy) amongst us can print off yet?
:D

Just a sec

Here you go. Made with the assistance of my wife who is an Excel nerd :D
The grey columns are for quick reference so you don't have to look up the modifiers of the weapons or armour every time :)
Hmm, I've attached an Excel file. Can anyone download it?
-
I can't open it--getting a "can't open files in the "data" format error?
-
Doesn't show as an Excel file when I try to open it. Bunch of gifs and jpegs.

OK everybody, fellow excel nerd here - once you saved it, go to the folder where you saved it and then rename it, remembering to add the suffix '.xlsx', ok?

Pinkertons: >snip<
Hi Bullshot,
As a little teaser at least nine of the new companies in our planned supplement are from the New World. They will include the Secret Service, but not the Pinkertons.
I do like the way you are structuring it though. Any good list needs a range of figure types working together.

Thank you, my good man.

I'll double check some of the figures and send it over.

Good to know this is here - the first thing I do whenever I get new rules is go 'OK, how can I do it differently?' ;)
I did think of playing my UNIT: 1891 force as a straight Rifle Company, with Sgt Benton (who has a scratch-built lightning gun, more or less like an Arc Rifle) as a Sapper with a Congreave Rocket Gun instead, but my ne'er-do-wells from the Ministerial Investigations Board and sundry other adventurous types don't really fit any of the profiles terribly well. I'll be poring over the company creation rules with some interest!
Carry on!

A gent after my own heart :D
I shall look forward to seeing your creations...

I can't seem to get the spreadsheet to work - and I have followed Craig's suggestion but I reckon I must be doing something wrong. Is anyone able to help please?
-
I open it up and get a nicely formatted spreadsheet, but it has no formulas attached to any of the cells...
-
The request was for a basic roster sheet, so that's what you get :)
I have a sheet that has all the options programmed in as drop down menu's and a macro that blanks it all again for you. It's currently with Craig and Charles being tested.
-
All good then. :)
Was concerned that some formatting had been lost using Open Office to open the .xlsx file.
-
Charles and I should be finished testing Kate's sheet soon.
It's worth pointing out that we shall be releasing two sheets at the same time - Kate's, which has macro's in it and Aonghus' which does not. This is so you can choose the one that suits you best.
-
The Macro can be removed if you want? All it does is blank the sheet for you as it can be annoying to have to reset each drop down option one at a time.

You can have a 'blank' choice in the drop down. You just need one choice to be a '. If this is the first choice in the list the cell will be blank.

Top choice is a blank, but if you've made nine people with skills stats and equipment, that's an awful lot of squares you have to change to blank in each drop down.

I'm with you now. Looking forward to seeing it, save me having to do mine. ;)

Like the notion, but how do you ensure that the custom companies are balanced with the rest of the game?

Playtest? If really unbalanced, change the company or play against a different one.
Gracias,
Glenn

Points ;)
And then Playtest as Glenn said. If it's not fun it needs changing.

Wonderful news on the two spreadsheets, I look forward to dabbling with those in due course. I've never been that good with points lists and army lists (I think it's a question of patience as opposed to mathematic ability) so I've always preferred an automated process.
-
Will the sheets be available to common folk soon? :)
