Title: We Made a new Wargaming Table Top For Fantasy Warriors! [pg 2 FINISHED photos]
Post by: Jevenkah on May 06, 2013, 04:56:41 AM
My husband Teshub and I want to start playing Fantasy Warriors with all our new Nick Lund Orcs. Problem was, our gaming table was 20 inches short of regulation. Rather than let our physical space limit our gaming fun, we decided to build a new table top. In 24 hours we turned this:

Thanks folks! Some of you maybe wondering "Where's the grass? How about trees? Mushrooms, even?" The greatest part about the vinyl spackle we texture with is the illusion of depth we can get with a few layers of paint. We need it flat, so we can put more stuff on top! Such as:

We had a blast just making it so far!

Yes, I'm still staring at smears of spackle on paint in the yard, but it's dirt! Who cares! I would have cared a lot if my floors and wall looked like this. And the woods are awesome!

Woah, that's a board! And that's a quick work!

I feel like I should advertise "Come play on over 40 square feet of gaming terrain!" Something like that. Our 10-yr-old son had a friend over who watched us for a bit then asked him, "Do your parents do this every weekend?" To which our son replied, "Nah, this is the first table they've ever done. The other weekends the stuff is usually smaller."  :)

I would kill for that kind of space indoors. This is going to be sweet when you're done with it.

Woo hoo! It's slowly getting closer to the weekend, and more time to finish the stuff that goes on the table!

Table is looking good, Fantasy Warriors is a fun game.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear Fantasy Warrior is fun. I've read it plays well. I can't wait to get it ON on the table top.

that is massive.

I would kill for that kind of space indoors. This is going to be sweet when you're done with it.

Who says bigger isn't better?  :D

At the time we built our house we hadn't been really able to paint or model the way we liked for about 4 years. (For those not familiar with my story, Teshub & I met playing D & D 23 years ago.  :-* Long version on the blog: http://swordandsorcery99.wordpress.com/about-the-site/about-the-author/ ).  We knew we wanted a space where we could display the minis and play the game, but we also wanted to be together as a family while we hobbied. This was super important to us.

There are several specifics about the space I'll put on the blog soon, but mainly we kept a big open floor plan. No walls, and no lolly columns needed. Then the only furniture we put in were bar stools for the hobby/gaming counter and the computers. Seriously. My mother kept asking me, "But where will people sit when they come over?" She wasn't satisfied when I explained you couldn't see the game table very well from a sofa.

So what looks like wonderful big empty space is just that: a great big playroom!

You are indeed. You two have the sort of relationship/love that folk like moi dream about...or did once, & they write songs about. Congratulations; it couldn't have happened to two nicer people.

That aside, NICE LOOKING Hills! I spent the morning adding a couple of hills to the next board in my Spooky Woods Thingy...another instance of "Great Minds".

Thanks Nala :)

The wife is truly an unending source of inspiration for me as well. I mean what's a guy to do when the Mrs says "You need to paint more orcs and make me a model a castle for the sword and sorcery game!" ???

The first thing she said once we finished this new wargaming table was "What's next?"   :-*

I'm the lucky one.

Mud brown isn't my color of choice but it's nice to see again some old school approach, with a flat table and hills, streets, trees etc separately on top of it. It's something different from the perfect styled modular tables you see nowadays everywhere.

Great table. And for once decent people who know what a house is for: to use as a gaming facility. Top notch!  :D

Once again, I am left looking for the blushing smilie :-* Thanks for the warm fuzzies to start the day with.

Great table. And for once decent people who know what a house is for: to use as a gaming facility. Top notch!  :D

lol Thanks, we are getting so much love for this table we want to do a water surface now. The more I look at the mud, I can see a way to finish it a little differently and have a decent water-looking board that our flat-bottomed boats can sit on. I love what folks on the LAF have done for water; resin looks great, but is heavy for how we'll need to move/store the board. There are lots of other ways you creative people have done water that are inspiring!

We did actually create a space to store this big guy before we started. Now, space for the hills is another story...

Mud brown isn't my color of choice but it's nice to see again some old school approach, with a flat table and hills, streets, trees etc separately on top of it. It's something different from the perfect styled modular tables you see nowadays everywhere.

Thank you! Again, there are lots of GORGEOUS boards here and I would love to photograph my minis on any of them :) .
But yes, it's that old-school feel when it all started with a battlemat.

*blushing again* And we force our children to listen to those songs. :) Thank you. It's wacky to see how that shows through pics and paragraphs.

If you show me your hills, I'll show you mine ;)

I'm digging this!

Thanks Patrick! And thanks for the linkage on your blog!

Yesssss! We used to use blue foam til we ran out. Are the cobblestone carved right into the base foam? And I don't know if I could be the last one out of the room at night with that tree staring at me.

My thanks for the positive feedback on The Tree. The Tree proper is a couple of pieces of Live Oak with teased out hot glue roots.

Yesssss! We used to use blue foam til we ran out. Are the cobblestone carved right into the base foam? And I don't know if I could be the last one out of the room at night with that tree staring at me.

Jevenkah

Back on Long Island, the blue foam was of higher density than the pink. Here in Texas I found out too late the reverse is true. The board has a top layer of R5 Pink 1/4" Fan Foam (the type that comes in folded up sheets) with the stones drawn/carved on with a pencil.

I use beads for the eyes. For some reason or other, they seem to follow Folk as they move around the room. I've had comments that the Trees, Mushrooms, & Faces cause nightmares...I didn't plan that...honest...more or less.

LOOKIN' GOOD! You achieved a nice mottled effect...it enhances the appearance of The Little Warriors TERRIFICALLY. AND there's something very cinematic & satisfying about storming up or charging down a hill. There's also something about them that appeals to the Military Mind...the "high ground" thingy or such; put a hill or two in the vicinity of two opposing Generals & they'll sent their Troops  off the fight over it. GREAT WORK!

Congratulations, you are great, you have done a magnificent job.
And double congratulations for doing so in order to play Fantasy Warriors!
Viva Fantasy Warriors!
I have seen that you have done a fantastic scenery with a castle.
We (Naran Team) for several years we have made an expansion of Fantasy Warriors for sieges. I'm sorry, but the text is only available in Italian.
Anyway, if anyone knows our language and perhaps with the help of Google Translator, the URL of the page on our website where you can free dowload it is this:

I love your natural bits terrain for your story! You mentioned us working under the lights; we do move quickly when we can devote undivided/too-late-at-night time to a project. That, and we're playing Saturday  :).

Thank you! The funny thing is we are not the type of group to get nitpicky over who can attack who, probably because we have such great pieces to play with, but as soon as those Gautrians were looming over the orcs I was arguing for a high ground bonus. Of course wargaming, we'll need the tape measure.

Congratulations, you are great, you have done a magnificent job.

Thanks very much for the compliments! I'm afraid I am the typical one-language American, HOWEVER, we happen to have as one of our junior players a 13 year old young lady who just placed 6th in the USA on the National Italian Contest Examination! She and her father will be playing Fantasy Warriors with us, so perhaps we will be able to use your rules after all.

I can't wait to get gaming!

ps- if you're referring to the orc siege in my Bannermen Mod thread, the orcs won that one mightily.

Looking at the pics I was contemplating how absolutely cool it must be to grow up as a kid that surrounding. Is there a paradise for fantasy-loving kids? I guess your place is very close to that. Unbelievable!

I love this story driven gaming and just seeing all the things beside the table (not only the coffee pot ;)) but maps hanging on the wall etc. creates a wonderful atmosphere. Very nice!

Thanks! The cup holders are from my scrapbooking days; they are also used to clamp down cardboard when we're crafting on the counter. Multi-purpose!

As for the trees, we only(!) have about a hundred on several different stands. We do have about a hundred more waiting to be made, but I think you can still imagine the 6 ft x 4 ft table will be a bit under-wooded for a while. The permanent table against the wall in the back which is 4 ft x 4 1/4 ft can be fitted out as a forest though.

This scenario was a fortress in a swamp, so some hillocks and lots of muddy, bloody ground. Any stunted little things that might have grown there were trampled by the besieging orc forces.

Looking at the pics I was contemplating how absolutely cool it must be to grow up as a kid that surrounding. Is there a paradise for fantasy-loving kids? I guess your place is very close to that. Unbelievable!

Thanks so much, Doomhippie! I don't want to speak for the kids, since they can do it themselves:

Our daughter (13) on the right, DMing her first game. I didn't get pix of our son (10) running his first game but here is his adventure outline:

Our daughter also has a crew of young teenagers, mostly girls, who play a parallel storyline up north in our campaign.

I love this story driven gaming and just seeing all the things beside the table (not only the coffee pot ;)) but maps hanging on the wall etc. creates a wonderful atmosphere. Very nice!

Thanks! This is one place where the 20+ years in the same world has its distinct advantage. All that we've done has added to the mix through the decades. When we couldn't model, we painted. When we couldn't paint, we mapped. When we couldn't do any of that we would walk in the woods and talk about the campaign.

The game has always ever been about the story. We tend to describe our campaign as acting out your favorite character from a book (or other media). I hardly ever mention the ruleset since we learned it to throw it out the window and roleplay. We actually use the Conan ruleset by Mongoose that was published under the d20 open license. We've found the combat flows so easily all we need are character cheat sheets when game night rolls around.

And we go through about 2 pots of coffee per adventure.  o_o

Thanks for all the encouragement folks, enjoy!
