Title: Schitte Creek Saloon
Post by: Gutbukkit on May 06, 2013, 02:39:52 PM
Yesterday I decided it would be a great idea to add a saloon to my little town. When I make buildings  they usually have been pretty simple and the wood cladding has been done using sheets of balsa with the planks scored on. The prospect of building the saloon has scared me for sometime; I wanted a nice centre piece for my town but the complexity has always put me off. With a week off work, a house and animals to look after I decided it was about time I made a start. I made no plans for this, it all kinda sprang up from my mind, ideas pulled from various things I'd seen in films or in games.

It's still in the early stages yet with a helluva lot more wooden cladding to do (I'm using coffee stirrers this time round). The first floor is almost done and I've started the second which will have a balcony outside and one inside overlooking the action downstairs with a couple of rooms.

I'll probably have more progress shots later.

Looks like a great start to me. An old West set up is another of my wish list top entries!

Very nice beginnings mate, and I see you've also purchased the Saloon Set from Frontline Wargaming.  :D

Thanks. Indeed I did buy the saloon set. I'd forgotten about it as I started building the saloon and had a horrible feeling the bits weren't going to fit in. As it turns out, I had luckily made it just the right size to allow the furniture to fit and also allow movement around that furniture. Need to buy the hotel bed set now to furnish the rooms.

A bit more progress on the hotel; second floor.

Love the town name (that is the town name, right?).  Very nice work.  Your furnishings have my mind at work as to just when pool tables made it to the old west.  Can't think of a single western with one in it, doesn't mean there isn't one, just can't thing of it.  Will have to do some research.  Look forward to seeing the finished product.

Billiards were pretty common, judging by various films/books...but obviously the size and weight of a real pool table would have meant they'd be more prevalent in larger cities/towns, not small camps.

I know several "newer" films showcase billiards tables.  Tombstone, Wyatt Earp (his brother, Morgan, was apparently shot whilst playing pool), and I think there is one in Appaloosa in the back of one scene.  Take that stuff with a grain of salt though.

What others have said, great name choice and very cool start for the saloon. That saloon set seems to be something that needs to be purchased, even if I don't have a saloon yet.

Thanks everyone. Building stalled somewhat after getting annoyed with making the stairs. Today I aim to clad the whole building in little wooden planks so hopefully more to show later.

Definitely needs a paddle :)

They've run out of paddles  ;) I planned to make a general goods store with a sign in the window advertising paddles, the sign will then have a sold out banner over it.

It is those little touches that I enjoy about old west gaming scenery :)

I made tiny little wanted posters with pictures of my wife and kids and stuck them on building walls. Also used photo of wife as a scarlet woman in my Bystander Action Deck for TRWNN.

Great work, Gutbukkit.
This is really starting to come together nicely.

Another one to join the Schitte Creek fan club.

Absolutely, I'd much rather see a good scratchbuild than a laser cut MDF kit.

Looking forward to seeing more of it. :)

Cheers guys. I will be using some of the laser cut mdf buildings in my town but I'd like a sense of uniqueness to my buildings, something I can say is really my own and no-one else will have anything like it. Also Schitte Creek is supposed to be a little run down and down on its luck kinda town and my more rough and ready building style suits that more than the laser-cut buildings  lol The rival town of Bull's Deep nearby is the rich one, so all the fancy buildings from Sarissa, 4Ground and Battleflag will belong there.

Not much of an update. The ground floor is mostly finished just tiny details of doors, swinging doors and windows to add on. I also need to find some fancy railings for the balcony as I don't think my scratch building skills (or patience) are up to that task. I promise I won't turn this into a plank by plank report  ;).

I see you encountered the unending aggravation which is custom built stairs!  :D  I built some free-standing staircases a while ago...and while I'm happy with the end result, the process was...quite annoying.  Good looking stuff there Gut.

This is inspiring! To avoid multiple visits to Starbucks for the purpose of spiriting away mass quantities of coffee stirrers can you say where you got yours from?

I like where you are going with this build, Gutbukkit.
Great scratching!

Just do a search on ebay, there are plenty of suppliers.
Be careful, though, as when I did this they must have thought that I was a catering establishment or company or somesuch as they added me to their mailing list and I got endless catalogues of catering supplies for about a year or so.
Telling them to remove me from their lists made no difference.

You have been warned!

Cheers! It's off to Ebay to find persistant suppliers of stirrers! Thanks for the tip.

I got mine from Amazon. There are a lot of choices there as well, and maybe easier to deal with than eBay.

Well sorry for the long wait guys. I kinda lost my way with the saloon, getting fed up with gluing coffee stirrers on. But now after months and renewed inspiration (you guys and your projects helped there), I've finally finished it. Well, all but the paint job.

So without further ado, I present Schitte Creek's new saloon and hotel.

Cheers. If I was to do it again, I'd make it bigger, probably 12"x12" and have an internal stair case. This was a test really to see if I could build a corner saloon so I wanted it to be simple. I will eventually build a bigger saloon with more rooms upstairs and back rooms downstairs. There is access via the outside side staircase so it's good enough for games; I don't like it when there is no sensible way to get to second floor as is the case on some laser cut buildings.

Would a Mr. Swearengen  look good standing on the balcony ? although I,d prefer Joanie Stubbs.

Indeed. I have a not-Swearengen miniature from Artizan Designs who will be the landlord of this place.

Only making enquiries, mate.
It looks great as it is.

I wondered if one of the MDF staircases might work, as stairs can be a right git to build.
And I know exactly how you feel regarding inaccessible upper floors!

I'm definitely thinking of MDF stairs for my next building. They are indeed a nightmare to build and the bit I'm least happy with on this saloon. They look wonky (reason why there's no pic from round the back  lol). If love to do a multi level staircase but my current skills/patience don't stretch to that lol.
