Title: Blood eating paint?
Post by: Sumatran Rat Monkey on May 07, 2013, 08:22:08 AM
Okay, I just mentioned this elsewhere, and now it's actually got me wondering (blame Neotacha):

Has anyone ever gotten blood on a painted, but unvarnished/sealed, figure, and had it cause the paint to come off/loose?

Had an, ahem, "incident" a couple weeks ago and bled all over a figure (well, over roughly half of it.  Among other things.), and a couple hours later, when I got home from getting it sprayed with medigel by los medicos (really!  It was called "DermaBond."  Neat stuff!), I saw I'd bled all over a silver-basecoated figure, took it to the sink to rinse it off- and watched the blood, paint, and primer all slough right off under the running water, but only where the blood had been.

Was a first for me, in 32 years of goofing off with miniature (Hey, I started young, damn it!  I'm youthful still, I tell you!).

Anyone else ever had anything like that happen?  Or was one of my exes right, and I really am toxic?

</rimshot>

Oh, technical info: figure was basecoated with silver artist's ink, over Reaper Brush-On Primer (white), if that has anything to do with it.

There are a lot of enzimes in blood. May be that some enzimes reacted with paint oil. Or the water in blood did the job.

Are you human? I have bled on figures before. Never had my blood eat through the paint though. It was a bitch trying to paint over the blood though. Blood likes to seep through when painted over.

Are you human?

That depends entirely on who you ask, 'twould seem, hahaha.

It did strike me as odd, though- I've never had that happen before, either.  ...not that I make a habit of bleeding all over figures, mind you, but it's happened once or twice.

I'm wondering if it's just due to it being ink and/or a brush-on primer, mostly.

...mostly.

Does the photo on your driver's license look like it was painted by HR Geiger, Sumatran Rat Monkey?  ;D

Going to stick to using neat Dettol to strip the next batch of figs.......but must of bled on some figs over the years but never that reaction (nearly passed out drilling into the palm of my left hand though)

Haha, no, but I have been told I looked like the bastard lovechild of Rasputin the Mad and Alien Jourgensen/Rob Zombie before, if that counts!

Hmm. I've got some figures that I've tried to strip the paint off and there's still a lot of residue... I've used everything... Simple Green, multiple types of hardcore paint stripper, acetone...

Blood, you say?

Hmmm - lets think about this.

£1000 for a kidnap
£10 food per week
£5 for 'medical' equipment

2L of blood per week - bottle off at 75% dilution and sell as paint stripper for £15 a pop...

Should break even in 4 months or so

Darn - that I say that out loud?

No never seen blood strip paint!

Hey now, there's nothing "dark" about my patron, Necoc Yaotl!

Not... really...

Seems we've bred a whole new variety of vampire here.

"Drink it? What a waste!"

Ya know... that would explain an incident a few years ago, wherein I was hospitalized for a little over a month, was told my blood volume was uncomfortably (for the docs) low, and given five units of blood plasma- that promptly disappeared, despite no bleeding, internal or otherwise.  The doc was genuinely spooked, much to the amusement of my then-girlfriend.

...and come to think of it, I did have a small case of minis there to work on, to alleviate the boredom (I was confined to a bed the entire 5 weeks or so).

Oh hell, and they were figs I'd converted into cultists of the "Old Gods," too, come to think of it.
