Title: Armoured Train WIP
Post by: cgh on May 10, 2013, 11:58:19 AM
Some pics of what I've done so far.  This all started when I came across Siberia Miniatures 1919 Polish and i had to do the period.  So then I was going to Edinburgh's GW for some stuff and round the corner is a really tatty Poundstretcher.  Deep in the basement, right at the back were toy train sets reduced to £5.99 - so I bought one.  A week later I bought another (for the tracks) so now I've discovered the joy of Plasticard.

Machine gun/command car

Open armoured truck

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/photo3.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/photo3.jpg.html)

Same truck with armoured roof

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/photo4.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/photo4.jpg.html)

Same truck with turret gun made from a pencil sharpner and a GW flight stand

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/photo5.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/photo5.jpg.html)

Now I've started on the train itself

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/photo6.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/photo6.jpg.html)

If any of you notice a strong similarity to Bogglers train from this topic

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=27590.0

it's purely coincidental and nothing to do with the fact that I obsessed over this train and have printouts of it next to me when I'm modelling mine at all.   :-* Or that is was this one that inspired me to do it in the first place.

This forum is dangerous...

Looking at my Perry Miniatures WOTR figures, it seems to me that the plasticard bases that come with these sets might make useful boiler plate for such a railway project, potentially as armour plate cladding? - seems to be in 20x20mm and multiples of 20mm sizes... might be worth checking out?

Just out of curiosity how much track do you get with it? And do you have any photos of the track? Could use some for a WW2 scenario I'm planning

6 curved and 2 straights.  I reckon each segment is just over a foot in length but that's from memory.  I shall post more pics next week as I'm only working on it at lunchtimes at work.  I have since painted them Tamiya Russian Army Green and they are looking nice  :)

I know that set. It's a wild west engine. I hadn't thought of cutting it up like that to make a more modern engine.Good idea

You've hit upon a good foundation there for an armoured train. The Old West locos had a low boiler and high cab. I see you've cut off the domes - pity. If you look at the Russian U series 4-6-0 locos, many were simply clad with boiler plate panels with inspection ports to get at the workings, so you could still see all the top gubbins. I presume you are going for the 'monitor' look with angular plates on top, boxed in workings etc. like this image
Many retained the running gear and wheels exposed as well, but with an armoured skirt you can gloss over the different number of driving wheels. Don't forget to have inspection ports for the axles and cylinders...

Looking forward to seeing how this project progresses

Correct MB.  I shall post another pic of the second loco later when I open it's box.  I'm planning on converting that one into a tank engine with no coal wagon if possible as I have plans for it ...

SB - correct ish.  I am liking the monitor look an awful lot but am not sure if I should box the roof in.  I like the curve.

Cardboard underskirt and first piece of plasticard.  The card is one bit.  I partially slit through it enough to let if fold neatly and used this as a former as I've no bits of wood lying about.  It seemed the easiest thing to do.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image.jpg.html)

Armour plate on.  The funnel, light and armoured dome (lego bits and plasticard) are not attached but I wanted to see how it looked.  Also unsure about the funnel.  Too wild west?  Should the funnel come off?

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-1.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-1.jpg.html)

I am planning inspection ports too but need to think about the cab armour. I removed the battery compartment without realising that it had the rear coupling attached to it and it's impossible to get back in now I've started.  Appropriate hole in plasticard methinks.

I think the funnel looks a little weird. Lose the nut and the funnel has to be skinnier.
Title: Re: Armoured Train WIP
Post by: former user on May 14, 2013, 05:01:18 AM
the funnel is of a "western style"  (upper part missing) that were used to catch the sparks when burning wood for fuel. They were not common in RCW, though technically not wrong, since wood fuel was occasionally necessary and used.

Post by: sukhe_bator on May 14, 2013, 09:56:11 AM
I agree with von lucky and former user, the funnel looks a little strange. The armoured train I pictured has a slightly inverted taper which seems to be common for most oil and coal burning continental locomotives
Title: Re: Armoured Train WIP
Post by: cgh on May 14, 2013, 08:05:54 PM
Yep it doesn't work as a funnel.  I'm tempted to just use a nut as an armoured funnel, I'm sure I've seen something similar in photos of armoured trains. I don't know where I could find something with that inverted taper.  Open to suggestions.

No work on the train today as I didn't really have the time.

Too small.   Need a fatter pen.

Train with more armour.  I've also place card on thr roof - decided to armour it after all.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-3.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-3.jpg.html)

Gun Turrets and 2p coins (tested for magnetism) as there is a rare earth magnet stuck to the underside of the carriage roof - I'm planning to buy a Wirbelwind AA turret and do something similar - and a Panzer IV turret as well for those WW2 anti partizan games

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-4.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-4.jpg.html)

However, was the rear of the drivers cab armoured or left open?  I've not found any decent photos of the cab.

the loco should be connected to the coal tender.....

Am loving the pencil sharpener 75mm turret! I once made a passable MG turret out of some plastic rod and a domed plastic screw cover...
Title: Re: Armoured Train WIP
Post by: cgh on May 17, 2013, 10:52:26 AM
That will be an open cab then  ;D

I did originally have the dome part of the sharpner but two reason it failed - looked more steampunk than 20th century - it also made the cupola option impossible.  Cupola btw is a plastic plug from a home brew kit.

The 2nd reason was that no matter how much I filed or sanded it down I could not get rid of the manufactors mark "KUM" Made in Germany.

Well that's almost finished.  Just a suitable funnel - which I might be able to make out of used up fireworks I've just realised.  Sticking with the nut for the base of the funnel too.  This has been a bit of a slog with all the bits but I'm looking forward to starting the tender on Monday.  The front buffers are pins from a cork board.  I know there should be armour at the sides of the buffers but I'm not too sure about how to attach them without them being a bit fragile - and I'm pretty clumsy at times so they are being ignored.  I've ordered a Wirbelwind turret from CompanyB for those WW2 anti partisan games - I'll attach it via a 2p and the magnet same as the 75mm turrets.  Anyone got a spare Panzer 3 or 4 turret in 1/56 or 1/48 they'd like to sell?  Otherwise it might have to be a T34 turret that's been captured and plonked on.  Paint is Tamiya Russian Green.  I'm not doing a camo scheme due to cost/lazyness/lack of ability.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-8.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-8.jpg.html)

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-7.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-7.jpg.html)

It's been a steep learning curve but great fun.  The 2nd train will be converted into a tank engine, I'm planning on making the 2nd tender a tank transport/sandbag pillbox multiuse thing.  Another gun turret (double height) and an infantry/cavalry coach with hopefully sliding doors.

thats come up very nicely indeed,  you'd have to be very happy with it

Compand B had a few things for sale of which I brought a few. heres the link (there's a Panzer 4 turret and hull for $4)

Thanks Slayer for the link, I have ordered some stuff from CB now from that link but another forum member has kindly offered me their Solido turret so I suspect I'll be using that as it saves me $4.

More pics.  First kit finished basic painting - I still need to colour coal/wood and highlight/varnish.  Actually varnish is an issue.  I will not use AP on large flat surfaces as I find that is asking for trouble - anyone any suggestions what to use as a gloss protective coating ?

Undercoated tracks.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-14.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-14.jpg.html)

Link of said tracks

Train and bunker.  I have since attached a cut down firework casing as the chimney.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-12.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-12.jpg.html)

Longer shot of entire train (so far...)

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-10.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-10.jpg.html)

Rear View

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-9.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-9.jpg.html)

Currently working on the second gun carriage.  It will be tall enough to shoot along the length of the train.

Suggestions welcomed.  I was going to hand paint the tracks but life is too short.  Brown spray paint and and blob of boltgun along the top of the track before AP and matt varnish will be more than enough.  I'm still really enjoying this build.

This coming together nicely  8)

The paint work needs a bit more, such as weathering and maybe a drybrush to pick out the details a bit more  :)

cheers

if I may give a bit of advice for painting the tracks :
brown with yellowish drybrush for the wood is a good idea to start with.
Get a flat larger brush to cover the height of the rail, mix a rust colour or better two shades to alternate and then paint the sides rusty. It goes quick and You don't need to be precise since rails rust all the time (meaning that the rust spills over). If You want to add a bit more detail, paint the wood and the rail first, then drybrush and then give it a reddish wash along the bolts. get some rust pigment and rust the wood along curves and at stations - this is where the brakes are used and the metal powder dusts the rails and rusts very quickly. Apart from unused tracks, rails are always polished on top where the wheels run, so better use silver to finish them.
You will find that it doesn't take that much time and is worth it.

Thanks former user,

I tried a couple of test straights adapting your methods to my lazyness.  I stippled a 1"/25mm brush into tan yellow vallejo and stippled that onto a piece of kitchen roll then zipped up and down the 1' track.  A half dozen strokes and presto!  Then I got lazy and just painted the sizes flat earth and the tops boltgun.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-15.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-15.jpg.html)

It doesn't show up too well in the iphone pic here but it's a decent contrast and I have since drybrushed all the sleepers - it took less than ten minutes.  Tomorrow I shall finish the rails and AP the lot - which will most likely be the time consuming bit.  Soft tone I think as I have lots of it.

I love this forum...

I'd try a bit flatter/darker brown on the sleepers, to tell them a part from the rust

It's better IRL.  I shall attempt better pics with a real camera tomorrow.  I had a choice of two non metallic browns from Halfords this morning and went with the darkest. Rover Maple.

I've had to revise the second gun carriage as the original was too wobbly. This will be the cupola of it. I've just plasticard' around a matchbox and glued a magnet on the slider section. Note I haven't put the side bits on yet. They'll go on last then it'll be glued to the roof.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-16.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-16.jpg.html)
Title: Re: Armoured Train WIP

And here's the second carriage with cupola and 75mm.  This will also have a Wirbelwind AA gun eventually as a magnetic option.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-18.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-18.jpg.html)

And for those WW2 games I also need a more modern turret.  This will go on the other armoured carriage eventually.

(http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae162/cgh1969/image-17.jpg) (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/cgh1969/media/image-17.jpg.html)

Again, the turret has a magnetic 2p attached to it's underside.  It's a spare Solido another forum member kindly gave me.

Well I finally had a game with the train.

http://www.edinburghwargames.com/Journal%2083.htm

Scroll past the awesome Waterloo game and my little train is there.

It's been great fun and I now intend to try an armoured boat for ww2 Russians and some sort of boat for indo china. I think I'm addicted to plasticard.

In summary.

2 train sets @ £5.99 each = £11.98
3 pieces plasticard = £3.25
2 x Paint (tamiya Olive Drab 2 = £12.50
2 x pencil sharpeners = £2.50
1 brown paint from Halfords = £5.99
Vallejo us green £2.50

Total = £35.72 and I've still a bunch of paint and card left over.  And a train, tender and carriage.

This was my first ever build and a learning experience (as well as a lot of fun). Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.  LAF is a fantastic forum :).
