Title: Cork city work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on May 12, 2013, 08:02:10 PM
Hi,

Following other great projects here, today I started (I know, I started a lot of things these last weeks...old school fantasy, zombies, and now super heroes...) my own cork tiles based city. I first made 3 modular buildings :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5120362_zpsc17a6b99.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5120362_zpsc17a6b99.jpg.html)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5120364_zps5dedae12.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5120364_zps5dedae12.jpg.html)

I used some 8mm cork tiles. The 3mm available here is very crude and soft. I found these 8mm tiles, wich are more dense (but a bit difficult to work with because of the thickness).

I didn't reveinted the wheel, and follow other guys technics for my own city. I just modified a bit the size of the buildings (to allow a bit more scaled doors and floors), with 10mm more on each element (70mm instead of 60mm, 90mm instead of 80mm).

Concerning cork work, it's more forgiving than foamboard, errors are less visible (since cork still a bit soft), and you've got some texture without any treatment. Perfect for my solo gaming projects (as a solitaire gamer and painter, I try to save time everywhere).

This city will be used for ATZ and SuperSystem, both 28mm. BUildings' interiors will be available for miniatures (perhaps not painted in a first time...)

I'll continue tommorow, I need to buy some wood molding, and of course add some details. Now the buildings are drying (glued with PVA glue).

Nice start there :) Have to agree with the fact that the cork is a bit difficult to work with - I found it a nightmare cutting it, so much so that the only thing I started making with it is still I pieces not even glued together!
Title: Re: Cork city work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on May 13, 2013, 10:26:48 AM
Cutting is the worst part. Then, with some masking tape and pva glue, it's easy to work with ;)

Here's the dry buildings.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130371_zpsd09c0528.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130371_zpsd09c0528.jpg.html)

On this pic you can see a 28mm survivor. The slightly bigger measurements I used seems quite realistic :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130374_zpsccde0996.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130374_zpsccde0996.jpg.html)

Of course each piece is removable to place minis. I will probably paint and detail interiors in a second time.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130382_zps244d7930.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130382_zps244d7930.jpg.html)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130386_zps19a98139.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130386_zps19a98139.jpg.html)

I have to wait this afternoon to go to the hardware store buy the parts I need to finish them. In the mean time I'll do the intermediate floors.

Next buildings will be a bank and a police station, I think.

thanks for the comments !

What glue are you using to hold the cork together?
Title: Re: Cork city work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on May 13, 2013, 01:28:28 PM
I'm using PVA glue. It's why on the first pics you see some masking tape in the corners, used to keep the parts together.

It's easier (you can change parts positions) and a lot cheaper than superglue (pva glue cost 5euros for 1 kilogram).

Wood molding added, and first stair details  :)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130392_zpsc5aaf4fd.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5130392_zpsc5aaf4fd.jpg.html)

I found some plastic beads to finish the stairs. I also have to add corner stones, doors and windows details.

Fantastic start!

I grew up in Cork city and I can confirm that your version is already more attractive than the real thing ;)

Sunday, thats some clean cork work. :o It's surprisingly light, flexible and easily manipulated isn't it!

I am impressed your making a whole city out of it, and finding that wood moulding was a stroke of inspiration. What's your plan for the windows, will you be packing extra detail into it? Since its cork you could quite easily put metal wire "wires" around the building and thread them into the walls.

I will keep watching this thread with interest sir.
Title: Re: Cork city work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on May 14, 2013, 10:07:54 AM
Thanks,

Concerning wood molding I must say that it's not my idea, I just borrowed to another LAF member  lol

Concerning windows, it will be very simple, at least in the 1st version. Nothing fancy. But I will do real doors (since I'm playing ATZ it will be usefull), on paper hinges.

Concerning cork as a material, I'm very pleased. It's relatively easy to work with, but the best thing is that it's very forgiving. Mistakes and bad cuts are not as visible as on foamboard or cardboard.

Today I'll finish the crafting work, and I will paint them this week end (why ? Simply because I'll go to paint supplier friday).

The 3 buildings are finished (except painting I'll do this week end). You can also see some extra (removable) sidewalks pieces I made between the buildings (so the figures -not flying supers or zombies- can move and find lines of sight).

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150398_zps02a28afe.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150398_zps02a28afe.jpg.html)

I added some details on roof :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150404_zpsbc7cd65c.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150404_zpsbc7cd65c.jpg.html)

An intermediate floor is removable in each double module :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150409_zpsbc6014b7.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150409_zpsbc6014b7.jpg.html)

The doors are functional :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150407_zps0b2997d6.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150407_zps0b2997d6.jpg.html)

The ground floor is levelled to match the stairs and windows :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150416_zpsf9cf9b6a.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P5150416_zpsf9cf9b6a.jpg.html)

Next stage will be this week end. THen I'll start other buildings (warehouse, police station, etc...).

For interiors, I'm thinking about printing some "false" scenery (I don't know the word in english... "trompe l'oeil").  Is there any link to download this kind of stuff ?

thanks

Thanks for the kind words, but everything concerning cork building is coming from this website :

http://www.matakishi.com/makingcitybuildings.htm

And other LAF members made some nice cork scenery before too :

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=22963.15

I just modified a few things (like height) sometimes to match my needs.

But I agree, that's a nice way to make cheap and fast scenery. I used about 2 and half cork tiles (50x50cm) for this 3 big buildings. I have bout 12 tiles remaining for other scenery  lol

Hi,

I painted the buildings today, with my "famous" terracota spraycan  ::)

The result is not good. Pencil markings are visible true the 3 coats of paint. The paint texture is almost invisible. In one word, I'll have to repaint the buildings another time, by hand, and buy a new can of paint (brush paint this time). I just lost 11euros (15usd) and a day (since they buildings smells spraypaint now...I kept them in my cellar to dry until tommorow or saturday).

BIG FAIL  lol
Title: Re: Cork city work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on May 18, 2013, 03:46:55 PM
Let's say "small" fail, since after complete dry, the result is OK. The pencil marks are still visible sometimes, but nothing some paint cheater technics cannot hide  lol

Now I'll paint them, again using very simple technics to keep in mind the fast building process. Making the superheroes/pulp city buildings this way is really, really fast, even if it lacks some details, the immediate result still very acceptable in my opinion.

Then I will make a few more buildings. I also have to complete some survivors, so I will be able to try ATZ too.

I also have to see how I can tweak supersystem3 + chain reaction bits to make SS3 playable solo.

And paint some fantasy adventurers for WHL. And progress on my 3d dungeon. And find a job  lol

I was going to make that joke! Except my version was going to be 'that doesn't look like anywhere I've seen in Cork'.

to be honest, the photos forgive a lot and smooth the overall result...But it's OK, it's like regiment fast painting : overall result is more important than details. And this way, I'll have a complete city built in less than 1 or 2 weeks (counting working time only of course).

I would suggest you glue the buildings together with the markings on the inside?

They would then only be noticeable if you were using that particular room, rather than on the front of the building.

As to decorating the rooms, have you looked at doll's house wallpaper?

They do look good in any case.

It's been a while, but it's a major update, I completed painting of these 3 first buildings.

I recently completed my zombies horde, so it motivated me to work on my city again.

Yesterday, I also finished my urban solo gaming table (around 100cmx90cm, around 3feet x 3feet and inches), where the buildings are installed.

The buildings are already playable, but I'll add some weathering (probably tonight) and later (probably next week), I'll print sticker sheets for building interiors (wallpaper and all).

I also plan to build a couple of new buildings soon (probably tommorow). I'd like to add a small supermarket/drugstore, a small central park, particularly.

Here's some pics of the 3 first buildings :

thanks for the comments,

Honestly it's easy and fast to build, no need for specific skills. Of course we can do better, but not so cheap and fast in my opinion.

I simply used the tutorials and measurements on Matakishi website :

http://www.matakishi.com/makingcitybuildings.htm

I just made the buildings a bit taller since I'm using 1st gen Heroclix minis, wich are, even 1st gen, super heroic 28mm :

70mm for ground floor (instead of 60mm)
90mm for the 2 stories sections (instead of 80mm)

As I'm using  flat thin bases for my minis, the overall scale effect is good.

Today I'll add some fast weathering effect.

when I have time to build a city...

If I can give you an advise, cut and built ALL your city (or at least, a block) once. It's faster to make 3 buildings than making them one by one. Same thing for figures.

I now have some (humble) experience in speed modelling/painting (60 zeds in less than 1week for example) and when you want to create these fast projects (cork modelling is great, but canno't replace high end modelling we see sometimes on LAF), one big projets is faster to complete than several small projects.

The buildings are 100% finished, here's a few sample pics (with zombies, the other universe I'll play in this scenery) of one of them.

I still need to make the interiors. I bought some a4 sticker sheets, I plan to print some wallpapers and floor patterns. Nothing too fancy, but enough to play in them.

Concerning details, I dry brush some brown and black weathering, then I used some black, green, and brown washes. I tried to keep some kind of modern comics book feeling.

Now I have to think what kind of new buildings I will add to my urban table...

Thanks !

For now, I plan to build a central park, a bank, a restaurant, a store, a police station, a town hall (if it's the correct name in english for "mayor building"  lol) and a supermarket. I will also probably recycle a toy train I bought last year for an elevated subway (once again, I don't know the name in english), because I need something to link diferent locations of my future city (later I'll build a business center with sky scrapers and all, for example).

Sound a lot of buildings, but now that I know the technic, it would be faster. The thing wich I fear about is all the interiors I'll have to make  lol It's why I choosed to make the interiors printed.

I started the supermarket and town hall. These are the biggest buildings for now (the base is around 30x30cm). I also prepared an extra base, with same width as my first buildings, but twice deep.

I'll make pics soon.
Title: Re: Cork city work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on November 09, 2013, 10:57:39 PM
Here's the first pics of the supermarket. In my small town, it will be the biggest building with the future Town Hall I'll make (town hall + some kind of park with super heroic statue). These 2 buildings will be centrals on the table (the measurements are made for this, even if the removable sidewalks can allow diferent configurations).

The building is 1 floor only, the roof will be covered with corrugated cardboard, with an advertisement sign, and small air conditionning pipes and this kind of things.

In the building itself, we'll see 2 rooms : the main room will be the market surface itself (with 2 main glass doors with security metal roll curtain, I don't know the name in english), and 2 big windows. A emergency fire double door will be on the side of the building.

The other small room will be the storage room (where a ladder will access the roof). The rear side of the building (symobilized by the fork lift on pics) will be surrounded with mesh, with an access to the road. The entry storage door will be secured with a metal rolling door too. A side service door will be there too.

On front of the building (where zombies are walking on the pic) 4 parking spaces will be available.

YOu can see also on the last pic the 2 extra sidewalks, depanding how the buildings will sit on the table. The hashmarks symbolize some kind of future bevel on the sidewalks for easy vehicles crossing.

That's a big supermarket. You will need a dedicated railroad to supply that store ;)

Nope,

I think I'll just kitbash the passengers wagons, putting them together to make some kind of aerial subway train. I already find some plastic bits to make the railroad bed pilars ;)

Hmm, Ir appears I have somehow missed this thread.

Very nice work!

The sidewalks look like mdf. How did you cut them so cleanly?

Thanks !

I cut them with a sharp (new blade) cutter. I'm using an heavy duty OLFA cutter and a steel ruler.

The sidewalks are in MDF. I'm also using fiberboard.

I need to build some sidewalks soon for one of my projects.

A NY/Brooklyn railway sounds good sundayhero. It certainly goes more with your current project.

The problem is that I don't have any engine for the kind of train you're talking about. It's why I'll simply make a symbolized 2 cars skytrain.

Here's last progress for today. I finished the bare roof and stair cabin/air conditionning room.

I also added a small wall inside the building. It will support the future metal curtain between the market itself and the storage room.

I also found some thick lexan sheet (recycled from packaging) for the windows.

I'm still not sure where I'll put the stair cabin on the roof, so for now you can move it.

Tommorow I'll add the last details : corrugated board on roof, doors, security curtains, windows, storage parking metal mesh,  and some kind of parking pilars in front of the store.

I also need to add a big advertisement board on front of the building, and a few more details on the building itself.

Fantastic stuff.  ;)

I used cork to make my desert buildings but didn't think of using it for city terrain. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll have to make some new stuff in the future.

Cheers,

It's really an effective way of making cheap and fast terrain. The only difficulty is to find the cork sheets. I can be tricky.

Here in France, I only found ONE store selling it, and it's not exactly the same product Matakishi spoke about (mine is 7 or 8mm thick, so mostly only compatible with heroic 28mm scale).

One year later, the supermarket is almost finished  ;D

In the mean time, I decided to go into 15mm supers, but recently changed my mind again. I'll go 28mm (like my zombies project), but "generic" and custom super heroes only. No marvel or DC.

So I decided to finish my small town project, wich will be used for both ATZ and SS3 (and probably SS4 once released).

HEre's some preview pics. I'll do some better ones tommorow with daylight.

As you can see, it's still fast built scenery, like I also did for my heroscape and dungeon sets.

Inside the buildings the details are minimal, using printed stickers. Outside, the cork and mdf are just painted and weathered. But as a solo gamer, the purpose is to build fast, cheap and eficient gaming painted scenery, wich will still be better looking than no scenery at all.

I still plan to create "premium" full detailed scenery soon, for my "shadowpunk" project (scenery wich could be used for Shadowrun but also Cyberpunk and Judge Dredd universes). But I will probably create my own molds to keep the work fast enough.

Anyway, for now it's just the cork city !  lol Tommorow I will add the last details (detailling the small back warehouse)

Post by: sundayhero on October 17, 2014, 01:22:36 PM
thanks for the comments.

I must say that it was difficult to find cork here. But one day I found 2 packs of tiles in a hardware store for cheap (about 10euros each pack). It's also not the exact same thing Matakishi is using, as far as I know. But now that I bought it, I'm using it  lol

I made my 3d dungeon walls with it, and also a few supercity buildings too.

Here's the final pics, still not daylight, but anyway. I took photos all around the building :

A photo with one of my previous buildings :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/PA180621_zpsdac057f6.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/PA180621_zpsdac057f6.jpg.html)

And some action pics. The doors are functional :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/PA180600_zps8e0f2002.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/PA180600_zps8e0f2002.jpg.html)

And you can notice the black lining I did on the building. I will probably do it on the previous buildings too, it give a nice comics effect, in my opinion. You can also notice that I forgot to paint the exit panel above the emergency door.

A last survival shot. Today I made a  couple of palettes to add some extra cover. Boxes are glued on them, but the palettes can be removed.

I also have to repaint the forklift I bought.

Concerning the supermarket, I just searched on google for big enough "supermarket shelves" images, and then I reworked them in GIMP (open source photo software).

Then, I printed them in normal quality on A4 sized white stickers. Then, I cut them with cutter and xacto knife, and glued them on cork.

For the commercial posters and front "powermarket" sign, I used open source software Inkscape, wich is really great to make print graphics. I also used free fonts I downloaded from Dafont website.

For the other buildings, I'll do the same. Mixing inkscape vector and gimp bitmap design tools, and images from internet ;)

Awesome job! I think I'm going to use this idea for adding more buildings to my table.

I much prefer cork to foam or plastic because it's biodegradable, and the offcuts can also be ground into basing material.

The other materiel of choice is the Depron, it's cheap, easier to find than cork, and available in 3, 6 and 10 (or 12? I'm not sure) mm thickness.

I'm currently working on afghanistan buildings, using 6mm depron. It's easier to cut, and take PVA glue the same way (even if it's not as sturdy as cork).

The only "issue" with depron is that you may need to texture your buildings.

thank you for your comments !

Not sure about other countries, but cork flooring and wallcovering (in 6mm and 9mm) is readily available in the US. Just make sure that it's all cork, not cork laminated to hardboard.

Cork tiles are readily available in nz and I have used them for years in terrain making. The packs normally give you about a square metre of cork.  I usually cut a tile into small bricks and build fantasy/ ruined buildings out of them. The cut surface gives a nice uneven stone surface. I find gluing rows of cork brick very therapeutic ! lol

Chris
