Welcome to the Ancients Painting Club (APC)!
Well, today we're going to try something new. I’m on vacation this week, so it looks like I just have too much time right now, but never mind. While painting up a few Romans the other day I was pondering how to post them to the forum. Starting a thread for the odd 2 or 3 figures doesn't make that much sense to me. But then I hit upon the idea of doing a common thread on the Ancients board!
It's actually quite simple: this thread is about painting a 100 miniatures. Ancients stuff only, of course. Every member of this forum is invited to post photos of his/her painted miniatures here. As soon as we'll surpass that “a hundred" limit, the game's over, we will celebrate, sing and dance and all that.
Some simple rules for this:
• Like said, it’s about painting miniatures which cover the Ancients period. Also mythological stuff like the Argonauts or similar topics are allowed.
• You may post only one miniature each day. And only one, not a few or a lot. We don’t want to get to "game over" too soon. (That said, several shots from different angles are acceptable, of course.)
• Once entered, you don’t have to post every day. It’s perfectly sufficient to post just one single miniature at all in order to take part in the game and to become a member of our shiny Ancients Painting Club.
• This is not about showing your collection of already painted stuff, so please do post only newly painted miniatures. We’re not in a hurry, so take your time.
• If you want to present miniatures which are to be based in groups, it's fine to post them one by one without a finished base. A concluding picture of the final result would be nice, though.
And that’s all, now get painting!

And here comes my first entry, it just had to be one of the figures from one of my favorite ranges – Foundry Caesarian Romans made by Mark Copplestone. It’s a Roman tribune - Tribunus militum. For some reason he reminds me of these Asterix Romans :)
Entry Nr. 1 (Roman Tribune)
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/13/3_23_05_13_3_23_40_0.jpg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/13/3_23_05_13_3_23_41_1.jpg)

And now I have to varnish my tomorrow's entry!
-
Tempting!
-
I'm in :D
A very good reason to get our gladiator project going. I won't post him for a few days yet. He's not quite finished.
cheers

Here, here, I had just put the gladiators on the back burner in favour of Robin Hood. So will drag them out of the box again lol
-
Looking forward to your gladiators, lads :)
-
Great idea Alex :)
-
I'm in too.
I have some Romans to paint, as a practice in 28mm
-
Ah, there it is! 8)
Hopefully there's a lot of eye candy to come. Unfortunately (if just for myself), I won't be able to participate for the time being. But good luck and thanks in advance to every participant!
-
In case that an Imperial Roman legionaire is considered "ancient" rather than "modern", I have a successful experiment to contribute. I need confirmation before I show him though...
-
OK here´s my entry. A little conversion of a Saxon Spearman, from Musketeer Miniatures. This one represents a gallic merchant, a roman merchant and some other civillians are on my bench too. May be they will appear here in the very near future...
Entry Nr. 2 (Gallic Merchant)

-
Wow! That's bold Jan :)
-
yeah, the first follower :) a lovely figure and nicely painted, Jan!
I've added the number of the entry to your post, we really should count them.
-
Thanks! Alex, you are absolutly right, we have to count them! I resized the pic, looks better now. I took the pic with my iPhone, the next one, when my cam is back, will be better.
-
This idea of our admired prof. left me totally excited until I got home. I knew I had some Romans in the attic and couldn´t await to unpack them. I did immediately and set myself the goal to paint one tonight. I never did speedpainting before and it usually takes me hours to paint a single miniature. Due to that I had never started to paint an army, yet not a legion (although all the models are there for fifteen or so years now). A big thank you goes to Alex who made me paint the first of many within an hour. :o
I never thought that was posible for me, but here he is - painted, based and varnished:
Entry Nr. 3 (Roman Legionary)

Wow, a legionary on the first day of this, I didn't think that will be possible :D Congrats toyour first painted-within-an-hour mini, Michi, he looks very nice!
-
Great figures so far gents, maybe tomorrow I'll join properly :D
cheers
James
-
I'm in too :) As soon as the LPL is over ;) Goths and Huns for me :D
-
Next one. A Celtic Warrior from Renegade Miniatures. His pose is kinda static and the sword is actually too wide but still a nice miniature. Bought the Celtic Warriors box about 10 years ago, glad I've finally been able to get around to painting one of them.
Tomorrow a Roman again!
Entry Nr. 4 (Celtic Warrior)

What a great idea. Maybe it will get me to finish my gladiators!

5% achieved. Musketeer again, Late Roman Soldier.

I'm loving this thread already! :-*

5 entries in 2 days, seems you should change the number of miniatures to 1000, Alex ... ;D
Great project - I think I do have some ancients anywhere, but where ...?
:)
-
Thought of that, too, Michael :) We will see how it goes..
That would be more than exiting to see some Ancients figures painted by you!
-
you should change the number of miniatures to 1000, Alex ... ;D
300
That would be appropriate.
-
Let's stay with a hundred for the time being. We need something to aspire to after this will have finished in the next couple of days. ;)
-
300
That would be appropriate.
This :D
cheers

Another day, another entry. Like said yesterday, another Roman. This time a leap to the Early Imperial Roman era. A hell of a sculpting job by Aventine Miniatures, the figure is very highly detailed and all the details are well made. Thumbs up, Adam and Keith!
Entry Nr. 6 (Early Imperial Roman Centurion)
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/13/3_25_05_13_2_35_07_2.jpg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/13/3_25_05_13_2_35_07_1.jpg)

Well, I'm in! A Greek infantryman, dreaming of Trojan loot, from the excellent Foundry Trojan War line.

Welcome, Chris :) Lovely figure, lovely paintwork!
-
There is a fun idea and even if I don't find something in my lead pile to contribute, I'll follow the thread just to learn from the painters here.
-
:o only just saw this thread. Can my early Saxons count as 'Ancient'? If so, I am in.
-
Can my early Saxons count as 'Ancient'?
That's fine with me (and the Prof as well). After all, Sub-Roman is still Roman. ;)
-

Cool, thanks!
-
Okay... I have to support this great idea of the Prof. This is the first Roman I've painted for 30 years! (Last time they were in 15mm! Same colour scheme though :D)
Keith from Aventine kindly set me a few of his figures to persuade me how good they were, so I thought if I don't paint them now, I never will. So here goes...

Yeah, another soldier of Rome! Very nice, Richard, well done :)
-
I just found a caveman in my lead pile and they are considered ancients. Can I use him here? I really like this and want to join in but I don't have Greeks or Romans on hand:)
-
Yes, sure, caveman is okay.
-
Love that one Richard :-*
cheers
James
-
Beautiful Captain :-*. I wish I had 10% of your talent lol

Well Romans are a bit under represented here, so here is one. It is a conversion, Salute 2006 Arthur´s body with Musketeer head and GB plastic Thegns sword. Based on a 30mm base to serve as the champion in my slowly growing Dux B. force.
Entry No. 9: Late Roman Champion
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/13/1034_29_05_13_10_58_05_2.jpg)

Wow, that is great one, Jan :-*

Great additions, guys. 8)
Now, who's going to crack the 10 percent?
-
Now, who's going to crack the 10 percent?
ME! :D
Put the varnish on about 20mins ago, stuck him outside in the sun to dry and then hobbled in to take the photos :)
40mm Battle Honours on a 30mm base, not the best sculpt but it painted fine.
Entry No. 10: Gladiator

Top start, James, very nice paintwork! And congrats to the 10% figure :)
Looks like we need some opposition to all the Romans here. Here comes Hildegar, der Speerkämpfer, a German warrior from the feared tribe of Cherusci. I just love this figure, being quite calm but yet having some great character. It's a Black Tree Design miniature, 28mm.
Entry Nr.11 (Ancient German warrior)

James

These are two beautiful entries :o
-
I have just been bitten by the Gladiatorial bug so I may try for this...though my paint skills are not quite on part...what army doesn't need some ugly plebes right? lol
-
Superb entries today, fascinating! :-*
-
Well I like all those. The tribesman is a particularly interesting figure Alex. Never seen him before. Black Tree Design might be worth another look!
Jan, that's a great conversion of the Salute figure.
And James, your gladiator took me straight back to the movie! :D
-

I've almsot finished my first entry, but now I'm not so sure :'(
-
Some really great figures and painting in this thread. :)
-
Puh. Midnight in Germany, so I can post this evenings work. A warrior from Foundrys excellent European Bronze Age Range. I gave him a few tatoos, because he looked a bit "naked" without.

lovin' the idea and lovin' the pics posted so far 8)

Charge! It's from Foundry Greek Peltast Characters pack, one of my favorites Greek sets there, containing not only some dollies but really eight different lovely miniatures.
Entry No. 13 (Ancient Greek Peltast)

Great set of figures so far. My Favourite at present has to be no.11 the Prof's germanic warrior, love the palette.
-
Some lovely painting on this thread.
I have some Greeks to paint. I may try and get one or two done for this, If at my snails pace I can manage before the magic number.
-
Come on Colin. We believe in you :)
The Prof's even given his Greek Peltast Scottish stocking tops to tempt you ;)

Two more beautiful entries here :-* :-*
Don't fill the spaces too fast people. I ordered some Celtic figures from Warlord and they should arrive by Friday. They will the first historical figures I've ever painted and I want the first one to stand on this page.
Keep it up fellows, but hold one spot for me :-* :-*
-
I don't recall the manufacturer of the miniature. It may have been Battlefront as part of their Wargames Illustrated Moments in History Line, but a recent web search tells me I am likely wrong.
Entry No. 14: Alexander
Welcome, eluczaj to the forum and to the club! Very nice entry!
btw, it's a Xyston miniature:

I finished my first elefant yesterday, and it is also one of the first ancient minis I did.
He's a 15mm figure from corvus belli.

Very pretty one, Ben! Glad to meet you at the Ancients camp :)
-
Finally a 15mil model, very well done, Ben!
But also congrats to all other participants so far. If this thread gets people started painting Ancients figures, that's quite beneficial in my book. :D
-
What a brilliant thread! I've something that will hopefully find it's way in here before the 100 mark.
-
There is far too much quality being shown here, time to lower the bar. lol
Entry Nr. 16: Saxon Scop
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/13/1034_29_05_13_11_00_03_4.jpg)
-
Are you kidding? Great Job on a nice mini. Bar NOT lowered :P
-
He does kind of look like he's singing "Oh what a beautiful Mornin'" from Oklahoma! though. :)
Or perhaps it's from Beowulf: The Musical.
But yes, I agree. Fine job, no worries there.
-
That elephant is wonderful :-* :-* Yes, the Saxon does look as if he is to break into song. I like the free hand work you did on the hems :D :D
-
Nice one, Ragnar, welcome aboard!

Yet more Germans!
Entry No. 17 (Ancient German Warrior)

Lovely. Great colours on the furs.
-
Steady on! I have only just got my gladiators undercoated and you're on no. 17 already! At my painting speed it will need to be 1000.
-
More great entries... ;D
That German is awesome Prof.! :-*
-
Lovely work
Ypou seem keen on Germans Prof!

Another Foundry BA miniature. He wears more armour than the last one and has this fancy plume on his helmet, so with no doubt he is a important person in a nice sunday morning raiding party.

Three more beautiful entries :o :o

I echo the sentiments of the others, those last three entries are very tasty. The Prof again producing a rather stunning Ancient German. Like the subdued blood stains on the Lieutenant's figure and love the yellow cloth on Figouze's gladiator. This is now the first post I look at when logging in.
-
(Thank you for the idea)
Oops, hello,
Entry No. 19 : Dimachaerus from Crusader Miniatures :
Great start, Figouze, love the miniature and the painting!

I wish I could paint fur like the Prof. You have to show me in the summer!
The Gladiator is really cool. Welcome aboard, the whole think is so addictive.

Here is my first entry:

One Foundry Celt (unvarnished as this thread will be over before I get it varnished).
Entry Nr. 21 (Foundry Celt)

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. And another Celt!!
The striping you did on his clothing is lovely and I like the palette you chose. I must somehow find out what colours were used for clothing by Celts in this period. What kind of dyes were available to people then and what were the dyes derived from? I like bright colours but if it's not accurate I don't want to use them.

A Roman worker. Or slave. Converted Musketeer Late Roman.

Here is the savage Sitlakes the leader of my Thracian Horse, a converted Foundry figure. I don't think Thracian's really used warpaint, but it gave him the look I was going for. Enjoy!!

Great progress everyone. Hard to keep up. :o
Another two to go to reach the quarter then.

Great convertion, Tom, love this miniature on foot but on a horse it is even better!
And here comes Vitus, Roman republican patriot! Aventine did a fantastic job on this figure giving to it a great deepness of heroic character, combined with a relatively easy sculpt. Top notch, guys, keep it up, we need more of figures like that one on the district of miniatures for Ancients.
Entry Nr.24 (Roman republican patriot)

Quarter goal! Great idea with loads of even greater entries. I really couldn't withstand to participate in this project.
Ok... after haven't seen enough romans here:

Unfortunately the pic is a bit blurry though I hope to do some better ones on the next figures.
-
Another Ancients addict arrived :) Fine shading work on the tunic, keep it coming.
-
Gathering pace and participants! ;)
I really need to fasttrack some of the Victrix Greeks I bought at Salute...
-
Didn't think I was going to start a flood at 23. :D
Thanks for the comments. Lovely entries all for the rest of the day.
-
Right.
I think my painting mojo is back, and I've finished painting another skirmisher:
entry n.26 Greek slinger from Foundry:

This time, I've tried to paint a 3 days old beard. :)

Here's my next entry: the second elefant and therefore the last for my FoG battle group.
Another 15mm fig from corvus belli. (and only another 2 elefants to come! ;))

and here are both together

Now, that's inspiring! Mind if I steal your idea? I honestly only steal from the best ;D
-
Great entries! Ben your elephants are Top notch.
Willie: do so, I'm honoured!
-
Gents and ladies, we've created a dedicated APC gallery to store all the entries in one single place. The pictures are arranged in the order of appearance here, and I'll update that gallery as we go along. Eventually, as we'll have reached the 100 limit, it shall provide a nice overview of what's been achieved. And in the meantime it's to encourage new contributions, of course. :)
Here's the link: Ancients Painting Club – Hall of Fame (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=57)
PS: In each photo's description there's a link included leading to the original post, along with the contributor's name and the manufacturer of the pictured mini. Please provide that last information in your posts. Thanks!
-
Nice idea Mad Doc :)
I have a couple more figures preped, but no idea whether I'll be able to do them in time before the 100 are all in! ::)
-
I'm loving this and have started an entry which I hope to finish by the weekend. The only downside being that when I trawled the pile for some ancient goodness I found quite a few incomplete unit quantities and after some bedtime reading of various army lists have now ordered even more toys.
-
Good idea 8)
cheers
James

Einhard, der Kühne!
Another bold guy from the tribe of Cherusci.
Miniature manufactured by Black Tree.

Excellent Alex.
These Black Tree Ancient Germans are really very nice looking figures. Do they scale in well alongside the Copplestone sculpted Foundry Ancient Germans?

Oh boy. Simply wonderful :o

I just love this whole idea!

So many lovely minis.... o_o

More gorgeous work here. That Pict is so well done and the conversion on the German Shepherd is excellent. You boys are raising the bar quite high.
My Celts arrived in the post today and are soaking in soapy water. Time to put down the Goblin and Wood Elf and do some serious painting. Wish me luck! Huzzah!!!

Another wonderful day of entries.
Very inspirational everyone, well done!!!

I really need to fasttrack some of the Victrix Greeks I bought at Salute...
Get on it Cap'! I'm champing at the bit to see what you can do conversion-wise with the rather static Victrix poses...

My goodness, the entries are piling up fast.
I had a day off yesterday, so I managed to finish another skirmisher ::)

Entry No 35 T'ang Medium Spear
Not only have I enjoyed this thread but also the painting of this miniature, it has been a great diversion from the bit of a rut I was in. Also quite a nostalgia trip, I can remember the first time I bought and painted this figure way back in my teens. Its an Essex mini, sculpted directly off the pages of the WRG book Armies and Enemies of Ancient China by John P Greer, which although we now know is riddled with inaccuracies is still one of my all time faves.

Oh yes, I do like it, great yellow and clean very painting, well done, Svennn!

Good old Essex. I think they stand the test of time pretty well. Nice one Svennn :)

Just a heads-up to all the folks who are coveting the BTD Ancient Germans that the good Prof. has painted up for us: They are 50% off this week, as are all the BTD Ancients range.
Time to score the Egyptian captives I've been looking at... :)

Oh my look at that nellie :o :o Those colours and those glorious dots-I love them. Brilliant work :D :D

This thread truly is a showcase for talent (I'd best leave it!). Captain, the Athenian is a real beauty, perfect for 7th Voyage.
-
Absolutely top-notch work. So many great entries get posted that it's tough to comment on them individually as they get posted.
The shield patterns are very nice. A would not have thought to put the light purple and sea blue together for a shield, but the color combination is stunning.
Many of the figures have such clean lines. Again, clean, clear lines are not typically in my wheelhouse, so I really enjoy seeing these examples.
-
New boys on the blok, yeah! :) Welcome, Michael and Malcolm! That's a great show today, really.
Richard, I was slightly disappointed of the Victrix stuff seeing them in flesh but looks like they're worth to be
checked again. Still got a sprue, kindly given to me by Mad Doc and Lt.Hazel, maybe it's time to gice it a try.
Michael, what a great miniature and absolutely fine painting job, too. Is the miniature still available by Foundry? Would love to get it. Can't wait to see more of the scene.
Malcolm, lovely paintwork, top notch! I'm actually also not really a fan of that particular one but you did it looking great! Just keep it coming, we hope to see your second painted figure in this year very soon :)

Excellent Michael.
The LPL and the Ancients Painting Club! Your garden must be looking neglected ;)
The garden, Richard, is a swamp, due to the great weather we had over here throughout the complete May; and April. Even March. Well, I'm not so much disappointed missing the garden work, to be honest ... :D Much painting time, and my LPL entries are pretty much finished now.
Excellent work on that beautiful Athenian Hoplite and your roman centurion, top notch as always! There are so many great figures presented here already in only a couple of days, it's just smashing.

Oh my, this is just getting better and better. So much talent here. I must say Admiral, that you have captured the essence of that sulpt perfectly. I can feel his pain at being a captive. I hope Foundry is still carrying this group as I must have it.
My son has come in for the weekend to help take care of my husband so I can paint. My entry should be in tomorrow. It will however, pale in comparison to the work I see here.

Absolutely smashing, Chris, i'm in awe....Bravo!
Though you know, the rules of this thread - "You may post only one miniature each day". So this doesn't count as five :)

To repeat everyone else, this thread is getting better with every new entry. from the recent entries theAnceint Chinese Warrior and Celtic captive are my favourites. Love the shield on the Captain's greek, that dolphin is superb. I am very happy that we have not yet got to half way, so there are more to see than have been seen.

Admiral, Do you recall from which set this figure comes? I found Cr5/4 The Slave Trader but this one isn't in it and he looks perfect for a 'walking loot' vignette for Dux B.
Thanks!
Willie

In a pretty old catalogue I have he is part of a set called AF&S8X Raiding Party, in the 'Franks and Saxons' section. It includes some loot, a drinking barbarian who has some poor lass by the hair, and various other things of that nature.
No idea if you can still get it.

Just had a look. Still on the website, now calling itself FS8 Raiding Party. Still under Franks and Saxons.

Today finally a model on a horse. This is a Roman Legate. The miniature of legate is from Black Tree Design, the horse is from Wargames Foundry. I really like that legate figure but the BTD horses are a bit ugly thus the replace.

Do you know who Black Tree's sculptor was for their Ancients? They look very Copplestone-like. Steve Saleh?

NUMBER 45 This is the first historical figure I have ever painted so please be gentle. She's an Ancient Celt from Warlord's Hail Caesar collection. She comes with three children and a dog. I'm going to paint those as well and put them into a small vignette. I may not get that done before we hit 100 as I'm a very slow painter.

Her skin tones are exquisite. I've been to your site on more than one occasion just to look through your gallery. Impossible to choose a favourite. The Foundry Victoriana that you did really stuck with me. It's a shame that they've discontinued that line as the sculpts had so much character.

A few for your Spartan chappie, depending on his rank...
Polemarchos (warleader, warlord), Lochagos (captain), Enomotarches (file-leader).
I think some of these terms were different for other Greek states. It is said that Athenians served under a Taxiarchos (brigadier) for instance, rather than a Polemarchos.
They don't exactly roll off an Anglo tongue, but some of them have been anglicised into such words as Polemarch, Enomotarch and Taxiarch.

Sassanian General
An Aventine figure, my first painted Sassanid ever. It was a fun to paint up him, though I'm not quite happy how he turned out, looks like I need some more experience with them.

I guess ancient people were kinda frightened of such guys. So not the people of today, my daughter was wondering yesterday what sort of a crazy game I'm going to play with him.. :D
-
The last time I saw pom poms worn like that was at a Led Zeppelin concert and Jonesy had that ridiculous outfit with the pom poms on the sleeves. Perhaps this general played bass in an ancient band....

Caesar, at least it's the Foundry version of him. I quite like the horse. Not the guy on it. And I didn't like painting him as many details arent' well done but once started I just had to carry on. So this one today just for the record.

Well, nice painting anyway, Alex. The Foundry romans are a mixed bag, although sculpted by the Perrys. There are too many figs showing when they lost interest in them ... So this one doesn't count as entry 50? Why not?
-
Fantastic thread, lovely painting and a joy to see :-*
-
Thanks, Michael! The almost complete Caesarian range is sculpted by Copplestone (I think also the horses) a few figs like that one have been released later, I don't know who made that special one but not Copplestone and not Perrys for sure.
Of course, he counts, No.50, I did put the wrong tag writing the post, now fixed, thanks for the hint.
-
So it's all started over again, again 50 to go. Looking forward to this! :)
IIRC this version of Caesar is one of those figures that were added when the (now gone) management at Foundry's came up with this wonderful idea of supplementing and then slowly replacing older models with new sculpts. So this particular one could've been sculpted "in the style" of Copplestone. At least it's not one of those simian models by Rob Baker (a pet hate of mine, sorry), and your paintjob helps a lot to improve its look, Prof! Well done. 8)

hmmmm... not really sure if this counts since it appears to be two figures. In reality, though, the vanquished gladiator's head is cast attached to the victor's arm (as is part of his arm and the victor's leg). Nevertheless, I wasn't going to disassemble it so I could show each figure separately! I've had it assembled and primed for months but it wasn't until this thread started that I was motivated to work on it.
These are 1/32 scale Pegasus figure(s). I normally wouldn't go for the gratuitous blood but it helps disguise an ugly join in the model.

Right, he belongs to a small scene, so currently no base. And I didn't find another place to fix the toothpick, but it's thank God not for long ... lol
It is possibly an old Prince August figure.
-
A few for your Spartan chappie, depending on his rank...
Thanks Plynkes that's Ideal

More excellent figures. Celt in mid-air especially good. :)
-
Love that Celt, Michael.
If you ever remember the manufactor please let us know

Three new members of the APC, that's really a good day! Lovely work from you all. myincubliss, your Chinese looks very good, any chnace for a larger pic, would love to see more of him. Kugelfang, that's a lovely little diorama, never seen the figs before, well done! Here also would be great to see larger photos. syrinx0, thumbs up, you beat me to it! I'm trying to paint the same miniature since months, she's on my desk, too :)

All these entries are superb but this one is superb +1, Prof.

I'm fairly certain the Flying Celt is a (gasp!) Old Glory figure. It looks so similar to some of the ones I own but I don't have that particular figure. The Celts are certainly one of their better lines.

Pick up your brushes boys and paint like the hounds of hell are nipping at your hills ;)
Mine should be in tomorrow or Friday and I've learned that these are harder to paint than my detailed Fantasy figures. To make these really shine one must have excellent brush control and I'm still weak in that area.
-
Next one, nothing fancy. This time it's a Perry sculpt, showing its age. When painting the miniature I remembered why I never started to collect a roman army: I hate painting the tiny, tiny sandals with all those microscopic straps, arrgh ...!

Don't paint much as a rule these days, as I seem to have lost most of the joy in it, and find it an exercise in frustration and temper tantrums generally. But hell, I love the idea of this thread so much I just had to get on board.
But the Consul’s brow was sad,
And the Consul’s speech was low,
And darkly looked he at the wall,
And darkly at the foe.
‘Their van will be upon us
Before the bridge goes down;
And if they once may win the bridge,
What hope to save the town?’
Entry No. 60: Publius Horatius Cocles, 508BC (Foundry)
Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the gate:
‘To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods?'
MaCaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome
-
Yeah!!! Horatius Cocles is defending the bridge! And Dylan is painting again, that really made my day :D
Very cool miniature and very lovely painting job, Dylan, well done. Keep it coming :)
-
Yes, Dylan, you're such a good painter, it's a shame if we wouldn't see more!

Publius Horatius Cocles
Excellent. Crisp, clean and a great white. :)

O'Leary oh that dog...I have never seen expectation painted but there it is.
He loves what he is getting into. Can't wait.
He and these three children have been getting up to a lot of no good and having a grand time of it. We'll see if they can outrun their Mam.
Anne, that dog is a gem :-*
Do you have any idea how hard it is to post something after one of your figures has been up? You have this gorgeous Greek and I have a wee dog. No wonder my dog is running!
Seconded. :)
Thank you so much!
-
You know, this is such a cool idea that when it is all over, the dust has settled, and everyone has had a bit of a rest, we really ought to do this on some of the other boards too.
(Like say, er, Colonial Adventures, maybe?) :)

Very well done to all the latest participants. And, Alex, that's some stunning colours on that last figure. :-*
Picking up the gladiatorial theme, I finally managed to paint up a few entries for the remaining couple of days (hopefully in time). The first one is Flavius Sigerus, fearsome veteran of the arena, now acting as a referee (summa rudis). Not happy with the basing yet, but there you go…

Bravo, Doc! I knew sooner or later you would join the club :)
-
Nice to see the Doc managed to get an entry in. Wouldn't have felt right having an anceint painting club without some of the doc's work there.
-
There's a nice bald Roman thing going on from you Germans at the moment ;)
Both very nice.
I have two more figures prepped that I'm itching to paint, but alas, no time in the forseeable future for painting them :'(

Bastard... I was planning on having Pulp lined up for this after Alex.
Seriously, it certainly seems to be the vitalization a lot of us need. A refuge from the elephantiasis of LPL. Still, at entry #62 I better get a move on to get my contribution painted, varnished and based.

lol lol just what I was going to type!
Excellent Alex, and the gladiator is superb Mad Doc. One of my favourites so far :)
-
Cheers, mates! :)
Gladiators are fun to do, indeed. And Crusader's stuff is a real joy to paint. If only they would feature thinner stands, just doesn't suit my preference for small, flat bases. :'(
Alex, like said beforehand, quite a pompous version of Spartacus. Me likey. 8)
-
The quality here is inspiring.
Wow - but loving the retiarius MDM - looking good!! :-* :-* :-*

Keep it coming gents (and ladies :) ).
I think the Spartacus figure should have a painted dimple on his chin ;)

I'd prefer The Black Prince or maybe The Grey Eminence, but definitely not the Brown Derby lol

Damn good entries, sebastofig and Orctrader! Especially that Caesar is a quite the mini of the day on LAF for me!
I'm still going down the road to Rome. Another Black tree Design figure and now we knoe (thanks to Redzed) it's sculpted by Richard Ansell. Lovely sculpt but the cast wasn't very good to be honest. Like his face best.
Entry No.73: Early Imperial Roman Aquilifer
btw, Aquilifer was the guy with the eagle standard (aquila), so a very important and much prestigious position within a legion.

LAF mini of the day, from the Prof. I'm honoured. :)

Lovely entries again, chaps, a real great show!
Here comes the last one of my "damaged lead" program. As I had no roman miniatures myself when we were working on that "Mona Insula" project back then, I'd got some failcasts with a leg missing or some other bad effects from the guys. I did my best to use them all.

That figure in water is gorgeous and what a brilliant way of making use of him. And your vignette is very moving.

I've never enjoyed a thread as much as this one in years!
Lovely entries all and very, very inspiring.

Those vignettes are fantastic, Admiral! The sense of motion in your models is amazing.
The whole thread has been very inspiring for me. There are some gorgeous paints, and I love hearing the "I never would have painted this figure if not for this idea" stories!

Tremendous. And knowing your ingenuity I bet that base fits into a larger one too doesn't it
Well, if it would have been a larger project I would have done group bases, but not this time.
Are they to be used in game or just for display?
cheers
James
The plan was to use them as decorative add-ons for our club game "Mona Insula", but as they hadn't been finished in time, they are display pieces now. At least until we plan another game with romans ...

I just found this thread; excellent stuff! I have some Roman cavalry on the bench at the moment, but it's converted to match my steampunk stuff. Would that still be acceptable here?
-
I've been away and missed some good stuff. Nice work all around guys.
Hey Froggy, good to see you over here on the Ancients page. Hope the Prof will let you do it, as you're an excellent painter.
-
Superb work gents. I especily like the Pippin colours of your emperor, Prof.
-
Wow, Figouze, stunning work on the skin. Impressive figure and painting.
-
I have some Roman cavalry on the bench at the moment, but it's converted to match my steampunk stuff. Would that still be acceptable here?
Steampunk as such is a bit OTT. That is, if the setup has lost any connection to history or an historically plausible 'what if' approach (e.g. basic steam-powered machinery) respectively, or if it uses the imagery just as a token reference (like the 'Medieval' setting of many fantasy worlds). However, if the figures are still clearly recognisable as Roman cavalry using some weird (but possible) equipment, go for it.
-
Oh, sorry, forgot to reply to Froggy's question, thanks Doc, well put!
-
Nice one, Figouze. Very gritty and... pugalistic. :D

Wonderful finished product, Hammers.
:-* :-* :-*
Glad you found that (fucking) charger.
:D
-
Trust Hammers ;) Great work you perverted Swede, I am glad you didn't work a dog into the scene though.
-
...and now I can't find the fucking charger to my fucking camera...
Just use your regular ones.
-
This thread has suddenly lurched from gladiators to boobies! Another astonishing turn of events! :)
-
Trust Hammers ;) Great work you perverted Swede, I am glad you didn't work a dog into the scene though.
Oh, get over yourself, ! The Romans had a much less complicated relation to their bodies than you English prudes. Didn't you see HBO's 'Rome'? :)
-
Didn't you see HBO's 'Rome'? :)
Yes, and the DVD is wearing out at certain points ;D
Cracking little scene, you can see the love and attention paid to all the nooks and crannies ;)
cheers

-
Excellent Hammers, love the clever water effect.........and the tits of course 8)
-
Love it but tan lines? lol
Are they 28mm figs?
-
Holy Mary Mother of God, look at all that naked flesh. And people hassle me for painting babes because their not "serious enough" Jaysus, at least my girls don't have their tits hanging out.
And to make this even more ridiculous, I come over here and paint figures I hate just so I can say "See I can paint something serious." For fucks sake, if I had known this was acceptable, I'd have been doing nudes from the start and enjoying myself instead of beavering away on crap sculpts.
Yeah, I'll be posting my final group pic of a woman and her children. I'll have to cover those children's eyes before I do it though.
-
Now I'm excited! OLeary has got her dander up and may paint some serious fillies. :o

But nice nonetheless. I like the earthy tones but would like to see the a photo from the other side.

Looks grand to me mate, corking background :-* :-

Well, authenticity is key... but all the leery and fully expected comments to the side, I thoroughly enjoy painting nudes. Male or females alike. Or dogs.
-
I thoroughly enjoy painting nudes.

Shocking!!! :o

For fucks sake, if I had known this was acceptable, I'd have been doing nudes from the start and enjoying myself instead of beavering away on crap sculpts.
Now you come into business O´Leary... :D
When I started painting it took me much longer to find out that there are miniatures that I REALLY liked to paint.
-
Holy Mary Mother of God, look at all that naked flesh.
We're all grown ups here.....well, apart from the playing with toy soldiers thing. lol
beavering away on crap sculpts.
If that was mean't to be a pun, well done :D
Great job Blackwolf, but if the paint job embarrasses you send it to me and I'll hide it away in my cabinet ;)
-
Nice work Blackwolf and you've not lost your mojo. You had it throughout the LPL and turned in excellent work.
Now I'm excited! OLeary has got her dander up and may paint some serious fillies. :o
My dander has been up since someone on another forum said the only reason I get so many pageviews on my blog is because I paint babes. I bet that fecker a fiver that I could haul in more pageviews without babes than I did with babes in a two month period. Well, I won that bet by a long shot. I got 250,000 pageviews on my blog without posting babes in a single month I'm now sitting at half a million pageviews and I just bought a load of babes. After I get done with my fantasy project I'm having an epic Babe-A-Thon.

Wow, more great entries. ;D
Here's another one from me.

Any chance of a shot without the flowers?
I would love to see them without the distraction of the bright surround.
:D

Thanks chaps. :)
Lovely vignette, OLeary :)
Last one from me. Really enjoyed contributing to this thread and seen some great painting.

I actually painted up two of these yesterday and since the noisy neighbor was chatting away the wee hours of the night I got up and finished the basing. Yeah! for noisy neighbors! Surely I should break out the rules?

Roman Lictor - another great entry Alex.
Really impressed by the Aventine figures.
-
As much as I would've loved to contribute something special to this thread (like the ancient Chinese seen before), I'm obviously in good company with my preference for all things Roman and gladiatorial combat in particular. ::)
Thus people hopefully don't mind if I squeeze in another gladiator before we get to the finals. Building up the basics, my ludus has just hired Satornilos, a thraex. Again, more on that on another occasion.

No, but you may refer to the APC Gallery (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery&cat=57) – if provided by the participant manufacturers are included in the description of each photo.
-
Wow - loving this ancients goodness - especially the gladiators!! :-*
-
This lovely miniature is my version of young Caesar. No idea if I'm wrong or not but I do believe Mr.Copplestone had thought of Caesar sculpting this one.
Why is he wearing blue? That's another story. Being impressed by a "blue" centurion painted by Mad Doc (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51058.0) I was going to give him some maritime colours. In my imagination it's Caesar pursuing the pirates of Aegean Sea:
On the way across the Aegean Sea, Caesar was kidnapped by pirates and held prisoner. He maintained an attitude of superiority throughout his captivity. When the pirates thought to demand a ransom of twenty talents of silver, he insisted they ask for fifty. After the ransom was paid, Caesar raised a fleet, pursued and captured the pirates, and imprisoned them. He had them crucified on his own authority, as he had promised while in captivity—a promise the pirates had taken as a joke. As a sign of leniency, he first had their throats cut.

a great story, worth to be played one day.

After complaints about use of name for thos thread from patrons of the 100 Club in London I think the thread should be pushed to 101 or possibly 200... :o lol
-
What a fine looking German :)
No, Adam, at the 100-border will be finish. But no worries, the 100 Club is going to jump to another board..

Gladiators, Germans, Romans-all superb! Just a few more to go and I am tempted to go back and count to see which group dominated the boards. If I were to guess, I'd say Romans.
We shall see. Onward Ho!!!!
-
Love it but tan lines? lol
Are they 28mm figs?
No, unfortunately they are not. They are marketed as 1/43. I got them hoping to use them for a Conan-themed LPL entry but they were towering over the rather beefy 28mm heroic scale barbarian so the have lived a secluded life on the shelf ever since. I don't have many Ancients so I am glad I found use for them.
-
Ah, if only I had more time at the moment... ::)
Know that feeling ::)
Great stuff folks ;D

I have a feeling that this will not be stopping at 100.
This could go on for far longer than that!
;)
-
Just two more to go & I still haven't primed my Carthagenians. Had too many colonial sailors on the table ahead of them.

No.98, secutor from Crusader.
That's a fantastic figure. :o

Okay, looks like here is still some place for my newly painted Aventine republican general.
Entry No.99: Marcus Claudius Marcellus, Summer 212 BC, Siege of Syracuse
My first intention was to make Gaius Marius out of him as I found his face looks just like Marius' face but I couldn't imagine Marius would walk around with that sort of helmet. So I went back a bit into the 3rd century BC and did found my general - Marcus Claudius Marcellus. That guy was a really a though nut, fighting for the republik in the Gallic war of 225 BC and Second Punic War, killing in a hand-to-hand combat the Gallic king Viridomarus at Clastidium, conquering Syracuse and finally died in a battle, killed by the spear of a Numidian horseman.
Love that face, has been a great fun to paint!
Now I'm looking forward to the No. 100 :)
-
nice, your mojo is back along with all his mates ;)
-
Awesome additions. Just love the secutor and Marcellus is a triumph!
Can't believe there isn't a crowd howling to be number 100!! :o

Congrats, eluczaj, a worthy finale – and so the golden laurel to you! All hail!

Special thanks to the Prof who came up with this fabulous idea. Take a bow!

Splendid notion :D
Enjoyed every bit of it and rather looking forward to the next one :)

Thank you all for so many an eye candy. This was a great enterprise. It seems the ancient world consisted more of games than bread. But we are gamers, aren´t we?
-
It's quite a catalog of Ancients we have here in this thread. Good work, everyone.
-
Congrats to everyone involved, enjoyed this will there be more ?
-
Brilliant idea and we get a great gallery of inspirational pictures out of it, sad to see it over :'(
When's the next one :D

Congrats to everyone involved, enjoyed this will there be more ?

I didn't know about the laurel award!! Thank you MDM ;)
Prof.Witchheimer : This project is a very good idea. Thank you very much and I look forward to taking part in more (it's a good way of getting a lot of those miniatures in lost boxes painted!!)
Cheers!!
-
I held off commenting on this thread till the end as each model just so good to comment on just a few would have seemed unfair.
Great work by all who took part and I look forward to seeing the next 100 club.
-
Really enjoyed this - participation and viewing. :)
-
Well, thanks a lot for this common project. Very inspirational :-*
Lots and lots of well painted minis, and I think I've got some new painting tricks now.
Cheers
-
This was a great idea Alex, and I enjoyed seeing people's contributions very much. I had several more ancient figures lined up to paint, but just ran out of painting time at the critical point I'm afraid...
Ah well, maybe I'll save them for the next LPL ;)
-
Indeed, a fantastic idea with amazing contributions! :-*
Can't wait to see the next project!
-
I might not have got my gladiators painted but this did get me to clean, base and undercoat them! I totally agree that this has been a wonderful community-spirited ride, with amazing painting talent on display. I can't wait to see where the 100 club springs up next.
-
So what board are we looking at for the next 100 Club? Any hints? ::)
-
really exceptional and inspiring work from everyone - if this is not a reference gallery for antique wargaming, then I don't know what is...
-
Been years since I enjoyed a thread at any forum as much as this one. Great work by all involved and really looking forward to the next one.
-
I became aware of this and then forgot about it. Looking forward where the next one will take place. Might manage to paint one miniature till you count to 100. :D
Great results everyone!
-
I looked for something in the lead pile that would fit the Ancients category and I came up empty apart from a Xyston brand Quadreme [sp?]. But I really enjoyed following the thread.
... Next Painting Club on another board is coming soon..:)
So what board are we looking at for the next 100 Club? Any hints? ::)
I am rather hoping I will have something that fits in for the next one.
Edit: Wandering off to search the lead pile for something "Pulp..."
-
This was an excellent thread - quite inspirational...even if I missed out on it by a couple of days (painted up a bunch o' gladiators recently). Good stuff... ;D
