Title: Pulp Chinese Pirates & their Junk WIP COMPLETE [New Pics Added July 31]
Post by: Amalric on May 31, 2013, 06:47:27 AM
I've started on a new Pulp project, some bad guys for LT McAlister and the Harbor Patrol to tangle with.
Here is my WIP of some Chinese pirates, and a modest junk, one that could either be pirates or just innocent sailors.

Here is the start of the hull which is as long as the piece of foamcore I had.
Hull covered in matte board and I'm starting to think it is too long.
Flat top added and she is now looking less like a monitor and more like an aircraft carrier with a small hold.
You might notice my partially painted pirates in the background. Yes I stopped painting them to build the ship. Doh!
Front sides added and its starting to take shape.
My tape tore the surface of the matte board, but it will be covered in paint and unlike the USS Barracuda, this junk is going to be well weathered and worn.
Back sides added and now it looks more like a rocket ship with 50's fins.
Windows started but not yet framed. Peek a boo!
I'm doing a single cabin that will be light on detail but hopefully still pleasing to game in.
Test paint job on left which I'm pretty happy with in spite of the lousy pic.
They will all have black pants to tie them together.
Does 'Black Pants' sound cool in Chinese? If so that's what I'll call them.
This fellow was to be the leader. In spite of having the super cool broomhandle Mauser on his hip, I gave him a Luger in his left hand because a pirate leader can never have too many weapons, the existing left hand was kind of meh and well Lugers are cool. BTW, Lugers shoot soo very smoothly. If you ever get the chance to shoot one do it. My wife even agrees it's a sexy pistol.
Then a package arrived today from friend in Merry Ole England with a surprise inside, a painted leader chappie.
Thank You James!
Here is the infamous Mandarin standing in front of the partially completed bulkhead contemplating what evil scheme to unleash next upon an unsuspecting world. Bwhahahahahahahahahahaa!
Oh, it was after seeing the Mandarin that I thought to myself that this junk isn't too small after all.
The Mandarin thinks big!

Work will come to a standstill while I take the family to the Great Smokey Mountains but should resume in about a week.

Thanks,
Amalric

Thank you all for your kind words.

Are you sure the one with the Luger is a guy?  lol
Well to be honest, when I ordered the pack [BC21 Chinese Bandit Chiefs] from Copplestone I thought the mini was of a female because of the chest. But when you look at the mini in the flesh you see its actually a flat stomach.
Also there is no long hair down the back, just a head band.
It would be easy enough to add some long hair, etc., to make it look more female, but I'll just leave it as is.

REALLY looking forward to seeing this one progress, simply so I can steal all of your ideas.  :-*

Steal away.
I am inspired by so many here on LAF.
The great thing about LAF is the excellent inspiration for whatever you want to work on.

Also, looking back I realized really how lame the pic of my pirate test was.
The test mini is in the middle with the 1st two production pirates in the pic below.
I'll use the black pants and red head bands to unify them.

Given the waist-to-hip ratio, that figure looks female to me, and despite the flattish chest, which is not all that uncommon. Also, I'm not sure why it seems to be such a common assumption that Chinese females should always have their hair down, no matter what the dynasty.

Agree. Not that it's really going to matter, seeing how it's a band of pirates. Motley is the order of the day.

Well as I worked on my Junk [no jokes please  ;)], thoughts that it might be too big to be inconspicuous on the rivers, harbors and seas, and so I started on a smaller, more modest Junk. Will will progress on both until complete. At least thats the plan.

Johan, the Chinese pirates is a new think for me. But the good guys needed someone to fight and evil overlord wannabes need minions and thus the need for the pirates. Pulp is addidictive as one thing keeps leading to another.

And Von lucky, I will proudly keep posting pics of my junk.

Thank you everyone for the kind words.
I am slowly adding details with balsa.

Here's how it sizes next to Barracuda;

....where did you get the "mesh" on the windows and cargo hold of the larger junk?

I don't know its name, but I've heard folks call it Granny Mesh.
Its the soft plastic mesh sheets sold at crafts stores for knitting yarn thru. An Exacto cuts this stuff like its butter.
I should have picked up it in black, but the white takes cheap spray primer well.
I also used it to make the mooring cleats on the Barracuda. I just cut away until I had the shape I liked with 2 pegs to insert into the deck. Hit with superglue, paint & presto, cheap mooring cleat.
Oh, and when I was at the craft store for balsa, I scored some cheap cargo barrels. :D

Well, the smaller Junk is done except for the sail and to shorten the mast.

Painting will have to wait until I finish building the larger Junk as my work space is only large enough for one task at a time, painting or building.
C&C always welcome.
Thanks.

I'm happy with the detailing so far and have purposely keep the deck clear for cargo and figures.
The masts need to be added then to paint.

Thank you for all the kind words everyone.
The masts are installed and now to paint both Junks and the rest of the pirates.
I'm still debating on whether to do the sails.
Pro-the sails have a unique shape that helps ID the craft as a Junk
Con-its a gaming piece where the sails probably will be in the way and be removed for play

...What happens at the prow end? A drop down "boarding ramp"?

As far as I can tell, it's just open as shown in the pic in the link below.

Maybe for ease of loading cargo?
Or jumping off of when boarding?

These plans might help understanding the bow. They're scanned from a book in my collection, "The Junks and Sampans of the Yangtze". The text notes the 3' gap at the bow was typical of the design but it doesn't say why (though I haven't read the entire book!).

Do the sails! Do the sails!

Being Pulp I'd be inclined to throw a little imagination in there with either a shield like lowering ramp or a short "railing".

But she sure is a beauty!

Cool idea, though I have some fun ideas for arming the junks.
If you remember the name of the movie, please let us know.

Sorry but no rigging.
I'm keeping it nice and simple for gaming.
The sail is removable from the mast & the mast is removable from the deck.

Here the smaller one is, in nice plain hardworking weathered wood.
Is it simply a fishing boat?
Is it carrying salt or timber?
Or could there be a missionary's daughter hidden beneath that tarp?

They're both magnificent, but I almost like the smaller junk more than the big 'un. There's something about the lines of the smaller one that really works, it's a very clean and unfussy build.

The monster junk is awesome, mind you!

I have Pulp Figures US Navy gunboat sailors, now I can see wandering off to get some Chinese pirates to pick fights with them, and starting building naval forces...

The movie  was titled, "Soldier of Fortune."
Starred Clark Gable, filmed 1955.
Pretty good film, saw it years ago.

Well, I have yet to start on the painting of the big Junk, but here is a little progress on some fun armament, a pair of ship mounted '08 Maxims.  They are from Brigade games for their WW1 U-Boat. As is, they were a bit low and top heavy, so I added to the base with washers and brass, and a box magazine out of plastic sprue. Now they're nice and heavy and at just the right height to.
These should see a lot of use, as who wouldn't want a Maxim backing you up in a pinch.

I'll probably pick up the nice naval gun set from Pulp Minis next time I place an order,
but I had these already at hand now and so... ;D

Tramp freighters better beware.
The gun is a GW 40K basilisk gun tube I've had in the bits box forever and thought to bring it out to tart up with a generically fudged naval base. If a death ray in the hands of the bad guys is bad, what about just a good ole fashioned BFG?

Love the junk!
It looks lovely in its primed state....
 :-* :-* :-*

...not sure about the gun, though.

Looks great....

I can see the gun being mounted on a junk but maybe a little more work on the support? Similar to a u-boat deck gun?

My thoughts exactly.
That gun carriage is way too small for that cannon.

Not sure about the gun.

If I may, I suggest taking a look at Aleko Lilius' book "I sailed with Chinese Pirates" from 1931. Don't worry, it has been republished and is available at the book store.
In the book Lilius states, that the pirates used smoothbore cannons ... smoothbore and muzzle-loaded cannons. Plus the odd assortment of breech-loading swivel guns.

I think a row of old school sailing ship 36-pounder long guns on port and starboard might look pretty awsome.

Just my thoughts though ...

Well I have slowly started adding age washed to the junk, though its kind of hard to see in this pic;

Thank you everyone for the advice concerning the big gun.
While the junk's washes dried, I started adding stuff to the gun;
I'll be adding a nice big heavy metal washer to base it on so it will not topple over.
It will not be permanently attached to the junk, as the junk also has to do double do as an innocent junk upon occasion.
That way it can be used on other ships or maybe for harbor defenses to.

Thank you all for your kind words and C&C.

The painting on the big junk is mostly done. I just have to touch up the door handles and hinges.
Oh yeah, and the sails.

Seeing all the boats together I had the notion, and the scraps lying around, to build some ubiquitous sampans to clutter up the harbor with.

Here is the good General with the painted maxims.

And good ole Tommygun Chong with the primed Big gun.

Also, in regards to the cannon, while historically I agree a mess of big ole black powder cannon like shown here are more appropriate;
http://digicoll.manoa.hawaii.edu/shackford/Pages/viewtext.php?s=browse&tid=49&route=browseby.php&category=94&by=category&s=browse (http://digicoll.manoa.hawaii.edu/shackford/Pages/viewtext.php?s=browse&tid=49&route=browseby.php&category=94&by=category&s=browse)
AND
http://digicoll.manoa.hawaii.edu/shackford/Pages/viewtext.php?s=browse&tid=22&route=browseby.php&category=94&by=category&s=browse (http://digicoll.manoa.hawaii.edu/shackford/Pages/viewtext.php?s=browse&tid=22&route=browseby.php&category=94&by=category&s=browse)

I intend to use my junks as pulpish terrain pieces to fight over and like it a bit over the top as it were.
After all, isn't pulp a bit more fun when the hero's are racing to stop Wu Fang, Lo Pan or Fu Manchu from using a stolen naval gun for their nefarious plan than some mere black powder cannon? ;)

Thank everyone for the kind words and C&C.

I cannot disagree on that one. The stolen naval gun it is then. :)

I will need a gun like yours for my armoured train! :-*

Its a good idea to base it on a washer and don't fix it to the boat. Will do the same with mine if I can get one, so I can use it either for train or ship.

The big Junk is finally done.
She's plain and drab, sea worn but is she a pirate or just a Junk?
Lots of deck space for cargo or fighting on. What could ever be in the hold?
Here she is with the smaller junk and the sampans.

A plain but open galley.

Glamor shots to come.
Thank you everyone for your kind words and inspiration.

A fantastic harbourful of Chinese goodness!

Are you going to paint up the sails so they're the traditional dark red colour?

Those sampans look terrific, too.
A great pirate fleet they arrrrgh.
(Sorry...)

Now to build that harbour... ;)

:-* Really nice. Love the sampans. Amazed at the guns you built. Lovely. Have you considered giving an orange-reddish wash to just the sails ...seems to be a characteristic colour for junk sails and would easily break the drab. :-*

I hadn't thought of reddish sails, I'll look into it.
Thank you Braz and Wirelizard for the suggestion.
Mason, the harbor is in the works. :?

Thanks all for the kind words.
