Title: Suburban ATZ town of Old Shoreham UPDATED PICS!
Post by: Too Bo Coo on June 01, 2013, 09:32:50 PM
Hi!

I'm trying to do one building a week to get my All Things Zombies game going at HO scale, 20mm.  I picked up a bunch of railroad buildings for about $8.00 each, and they look great for Zombie/Post-Apoc games.  I already posted up an abandoned train station and this weekend I'm finishing the Gully's House. This should fit into either Rural or Suburban games.

More to follow!

The 'Gully Family' are the dirtbags of the town, clannish and sociopathic to the last.  They may be trouble once civilization collapses, and anyone living near them would be wise to keep an eye on this family....

My 6x4 Zuzzy broken street mat arrived today!  The plan is to cut it into 1 4x4 and 2 2x2 mats, one 2x2 to mount and the other as a spare.

Zuzzy was even good enough to pack a sample to paint and I can use to display models in the future!

I'm VERY happy to add this to my project!

Ok, since all the houses in Old Shoreham can't be a total craphole, I decided to add a couple of middle-class homes as well.  This is the Koningenman House and more neighbors will be along soon!

Ok, I have one more ranch house to finish and then a church and gas station.  I think 6 buildings are a good start, but I have about 14 for my 4x4 table.  I think I'll take a 'group shot' of everything I've collected so far for this project!

This looks like a great project!

Some neat paint jobs there—those HO buildings come up very nicely. Looking forward to seeing all the buildings set up on the Zuzzy mat too.

But where are all the zombies?

Thanks for all the nice comments Mates!  I must confess, I dont have as much time as I'd like to devot to this project right now, so progress may be drips and drabs...

I cut and am set to mount a 61x61cm section of the Zuzzy mat.  BTW, it cut beautifully.  I used a rolling cutter, it was a snap.  I also picked up some MDF board to mount it to, I plan to wash it down with light water and then to seal the boards with primer then spray glue the mat down.  I think this should work very well.  That way this mat can take more paint than the ones I will leave unmounted to roll up.  I can even use water effects here....

So without further adieu, the downtown portion of the village of Old Shoreham!

(The tan plastic is the site of the future gas station and the yellow building is the Handy Pantry shop.  I will also add a small church.)

That mat looks great. How much work you gonna do to it if any?

Cheers!  The mat in the picture is right out of the box, so it's grayish in color, but it also has some talc to keep the latex from sticking to itself.  It feels like a rubber high quality halloween mask, that type of latex.  I'm going to wash it down with a sponge and then treat it to some washes and drybrushing.  Then maybe some slight water effects to add brighter color here or there, but other than that, it's perfect as is.

The mat itself was pretty reasonable, I bought a 4x6 mat.  But my plan was to cut it down to a 4x4 and 2 2x2 mats. This is one of the 2x2's.

I HIGHLY recommend this product!

Cheers Mate!

I have a bunch of odds and ends coming in the mail like a 7-Up Machine and some crate and stuff.  They'll round out the Shoreham Store perfectly!

As to your prior question, the 66 zeds are on bases, but they need to be putty'd and primed.  But the Survivors and other antagonists are all ready for paint.  I just wanted to get some terrain going and they're easier projects while I'm working on my dissertation....   I have a gas station to get together and that will be all my starting terrain to get my campaign going.

Hoi All,

Ok, according to ATZ rules, I have enough terrain to cover spaces 4-9 and in theme for my first campaign!  This will therefore be the last terrain piece, aside from finishing the table, as I will switch to my minis.

Without further adieu, Al's Gas Station!

Oh, I wanted to add, I made the sign post magnetic at the base, that way I cannot only store it easier, but it'll also lessen the chance of it breaking off.  I also made the roof to the garage removable, and held in with a magnet.  In order to avoid detailing the interiors, because let's be honest, from the angle looking down you wouldn't see anything anyway, I paint closed off interiors black to obscure what's inside.  I really like the revised ATZ rules using tiles for building interiors and plan to use it no matter what ruleset I may be using.

Cheers!

Cheers mate!  The SUV is a Russian brand I got on my last trip and the Stang is an 'Auto-Projects' line from M2, they come all scuffed up.  I love the line!

And yes, that's the MFP Heavy Interceptor.... >:)

20mm is AWESOME!  All of this terrain, including materials, about $60.00.  VERY happy in this scale, and in a pinch, it passes the sniff test for 30mm too.

The zeds are from http://www.elhiemfigures.com/29.html

this is the link to the zed page.  Pretty reasonable and a good variety of poses!  I should have them started in the next couple of weeks!

Thank you very much, it's been a fun and surprisingly fast project!  Each building start to finish has not taken more than 2 days, with lots of that taken up with drying time....  Once you go 20mm, you never go back (sure you do, but that's ok too)

Ok, the town of Old Shoreham is 95% done!  This was about a month's worth of time, working VERY part time.  It was something to give me a break between writing...

I'll also be adding some details and stuff once they arrive, not to mention all the minis... :)

I was too eager not to take pictures to post up!

I present, Old Shoreham.

Please feel free to comment, I'm interested to get people's overall feedback.

Cheers Mate!  I wanted this terrain to serve at least double duty.  So it's good zombie games, pure PA games like After the Horsemen, smaller scale CW games, etc.

I must say I'm VERY happy with how it all turned out, I highly recommend the Zuzzy products.  Really first rate.

I mounted it on mdf with white glue and then weighed it down with anther board and 12 bricks for about 5 days.  It set perfectly.  DO NOT use spray-on glue.  This seems like a 'no-brainer' until a millisecond after you hit the trigger....  It sticks immediately and gives no opportunity to fine tune the fit, which is absolutely necessary.  I do plan to run a bead of super glue around the rim to permanantly join the seam.

All that said, I took a good deal of inspiration from Za Zjurman's Wild West board!

Looks great!

Many times I wish I'd gone the 20mm route, because of all the benefits of cheap and/or readily available matchbox cars and buildings, easier storage, bigger set-ups on the same table etc...  :? I'm not bitter, I'll just keep chewing my sour apples.  8)

Hey Too Bo Coo,
I had not seen this post before. So glad you gave me the link to it. Fantastic stuff.
We are on a 20mm parallel universe type thingy, I think. I have your Chris and Alexis from Dark future (nicely painted) and a few more including bikes. I use a lot of matchbox or hot-wheels for cars and mix in kits as well. My buildings are by no means as completed as yours. My plan is to first make them as they would be for a train layout (I have a HO railroad set that I want to use them with someday) and then weather them heavily. I will add the grunge look with accessories so I can use the buildings for both. Time is the enemy here as you well know. Add in the so many projects I don't know what to do factor and nothing gets finished. That's the fun of it when I get bored I can move to that next thing I want to finish someday. Just came off an Aliens project and moving into some fantasy next.
You have made great progress here and 20mm is truly great for the buildings and size of the playing area. Look what you have in a couple of feet. Awsome. I do think we sacrifice detail on the figures but that's OK if we can score mini's like the Dark future line.
