Title: The Great Italian Wars for "Pike and Shotte"
Post by: DonVoss on June 02, 2013, 05:51:33 PM
I collected a few foundry Landsknechts over the last couple of month. And I will try to build something playable with, may be "pike and shotte".
It won't be over historical... more generic, for example using perry plastic mercenaries as italians (even thou they are way to old fashioned to fight against landsknechts).... :)

Here is what I have painted so far:

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/landsknechte1_zps899057f5.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/landsknechte1_zps899057f5.jpg.html)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/landsknechte2_zpsa536e912.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/landsknechte2_zpsa536e912.jpg.html)

Not decided how to base them... ???

Cheers,
Don

Very nice indeed  :-* :-*

If I were to do something similar I'd base them on 40x40 bases and have three or four to a base. You can still get a regimented feel but also a bit of a vignette touch to it as well depending on the figures used  :)

Thanx, for your kind comments...:)

I based the next bunch of troops. This time poorer mercenaries from Italy or in french service.
I know they are way to old fashioned for the period after 1500, but perhaps they get their stuff at the second hand market or wear the armour of their grandpas...:)

I ve taken the perry-plastic-mercenaries (sticking with the perry-theme) and based them 3 models on a 4x4cm-base. They will skirmish most of the time...

Okay here is the first unit, italian or in french pay.

And some arquebuse.

You can never have too many Landsknechts and these are rather nice, good effort !

I like the French infantry too, I'm interested in painting some up at some point but have delayed over how to do it and what figures to use.

These are what i've come up with so far for Picard Pike c. 1513 in the Therouanne campaign;

http://www.stuartsworkbench.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/picard-pike-ii.html (http://www.stuartsworkbench.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/picard-pike-ii.html)

Regarding Landsknecht basing i prefer to base pike on 120 x 120mm bases, so much so that I wrote an essay on it!;

http://www.paintinglandsknechts.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Basing (http://www.paintinglandsknechts.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Basing)

Hope that helps,

Start a blog too, I want to see more !

All the best, Stuart

Great start - very nice looking figures.
I too like the backdrop - it inspires me for some terrain that looks like rolling Tuscan countryside for a possible future Italian Condottiere project.
Look forward to seeing more.

Thanx for the input. I won't probably start a blog thou...:)

I think I will go with bigger Multibases. Not decided what size of actually.

Here is a test for a smaller one, just 10 miniatures:

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/landsknechte3_zpsa66eceb0.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/landsknechte3_zpsa66eceb0.jpg.html)

The good thing is, that I can start anytime with a new concept and base them 6x6 or 5x3 or whatever...;)

Next are some italian pike on the painting-desk...

Cheers,
DV

Very nice, I particulary like the first unit, very colourful but at the same time not over the top. I see the odd Pro Gloria figure blending in very nicely.
Re the Foundry Landesknechts - I bought a couple of packs recently to add variety to a ProGloria unit I was putting together. I bought the Arqubusers and the Standing  Pike characters. They appeared to be by two different sculptor. I did not spot the difference in the painted examples shown on the Foundry website but it was very apparent when i had the bare lead in front of me. The arqubusers are very clearly Perry figures, but the Pike characters are bigger, bulkier and not as detailed. Can anyone tell me who the other sculptor is and which Foundry packs are Perry sculpts and which aren't?
Title: Re: The Great Italian Wars for Pike and Shotte (longterm project)

Moonshado
I'm pretty sure that all the Foundry Landsknechts, artillery and gendarmes are Perry sculpts - I don't know if they worked on them together (hence two sculptors?) or just one of them. The only exception I'm aware of is a single pack that some else did - think this is REN011 'mercenary characters' pikemen.
Some one may be able to confirm?

ProGloria are by paul Hicks of course.

Simon.

Those are some fine looking troops. Mine are mounted 6 to a 50mm square for Heavy infantry, and fewer the lighter the troops get.
Works great.

Looks good to me. I know what you mean about the lance decoration. When the likes of Captain Blood, Stuart or Painterman do those spirals they look so simple and easy to do, right upto the point where you pick up the paintbrush and try to duplicate the effect. Lance decoration has already caused the air in my study to turn blue more than once.

Me too  :)

Yes, one of the packs (halberdiers I think) Mike Owen sculpted for Foundry. All the rest were by the Perrys.
I still reckon the Perrys will do a plastic set sooner or later. The subject matter lends itself ideally to multipart plastic, it's a logical extension to their late medieval European Armies metal range, and of course, all those GW 'Empire' afficionadoes would be delighted too...  ;)

Have you considered the TAG range for the Italian Wars? They certainly fill in some gaps.  They are slightly smaller than the current Perry plastics but are a nearly perfect match in size for the original Perry figures from Foundry's Renaissance range.

Okay, one week without any progress in my little Italy-project. And all I hve for now is some rebasing stuff... :'(

I rebased some of my wierd condotta stuff to get more pike on the table. A sad story: I hate rebasing... lol

But it did get me three 12mem blocks of pike; a good basis for "Pike and Shotte".

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/Itpike2_zps7b708d80.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/Itpike2_zps7b708d80.jpg.html)

Perhaps a littel small, its the minimum size in Pike&Shotte. But I can add a few more pike stands if I find the time...:)

Thanx for your comments...:)

The daily update:

In the last week I stumbled over the shiny new Renedra -Set.
Their plastik gambions...  :o

20 pieces for 10 Euro, not bad...

And since quite a few of the engagements of the italian wars were fought over fortifeid camps and the like, it will be a good addition to the collection...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/Gambions1_zpsc5faa1be.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/Gambions1_zpsc5faa1be.jpg.html)

I know the trees should have another colour than the gambions (which they actually have), poor photo skills ...:)

And I did a new command base. I need one for each battallia, so with 6 battallias in all I need at least 6 bases.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/cb5_zps93484614.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/cb5_zps93484614.jpg.html)

Yesterday, I met with a good friend for a small game. Since I wanted to test my new landsknechts, I decided to carry theam to his place and start a little game.
Normally you play Black Powder or Pike&Shotte with big armies on big tables, but I saw so much great games on the i-net with just one or two battallias. So I thought: just give it a try with a small number.

We scaled everything down by half. So Infantry would walk just 3", cav 4,5"...
Played it out on a 1x1,2 table.

The mission was: Landsknechts try to take the City of Bolognese, italians and french try to hold it.

Each side had 2 Battallias, the italians had in addition the french gendarmes.

Landsknechts:
Gunter Büchsenberg
Landsknecht Pikeblock (large)
Landsknecht Arquebuiers
heavy gun

Johann Büchsenberg
Landsknecht Pikeblock
Landsknecht Arquebusiers
heavy gun

Italians und French:
Giaccomo Scudetto (verteidigt Bolognese)
Italian Pikeblock
Arquebusiers

1 unit Gendarmes

Vincenzo Caruso (on a flanking mission)
Italian Pikeblock (small)
Crossbows

Here are the brave citizans of Bolognese supported by a condottierie an his troops...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb1_zps575872ee.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb1_zps575872ee.jpg.html')

At the start of the battle, the landsknechts seemed not willing to march (scary french knights)...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb2_zps0c631cc4.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb2_zps0c631cc4.jpg.html')

...but after a few good command tests they managed to get things rolling..

But some of the landsknechts seemed more happy to stay behind...a cunning plan?

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb4_zps4be083b1.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb4_zps4be083b1.jpg.html')

On the right side of the battle the Condottierie crossbows confronted the landsknecht pike block.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb6_zps272dba21.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb6_zps272dba21.jpg.html')

The gendarmes decided to confront the smaller pike block of the landsknechte too, hoping to have enough time, to march to the bigger pike block later, and if lucky flank it.
(the sheep are deco and later casultymarker if needed...;)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb5_zps1cda33c4.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb5_zps1cda33c4.jpg.html')

But the plan of the gendarmes failed after a blunder...args.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb8_zpsdab30174.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb8_zpsdab30174.jpg.html')

On the other side of the battlefield a shootout was on its way, won by the landsknecht arquebuse. The italian arquebuse fled from the field at the first chance...oh my

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb7_zps96ca870c.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb7_zps96ca870c.jpg.html')

The way was open for the large pike block to confront the italian pike in the village. After a few heavy blows were delt, the italians gave way and the battle was won for the landsknechts

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/sb9_zpsd5f302ad.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/sb9_zpsd5f302ad.jpg.html')

A great evening of gaming: you can really have fun with Pike&Shotte at small numbers of figures...

Cheers,
Don

Okay, nearly two weeks without another mini... :'(

Here is gendarme No.4. A lot of more work to do to get a decent sized unit... lol

Very nice, you have a nice painting style. Look forward to more gendarmes. I'm holding off waiting for Pro Gloria to start issuing their gendarmes.

Excellent work on this one!
Is it a Foundry model?

Yes, Foundry. I like the models, although they have very limitetd horse poses and are more on the small side...

@ Don - have a look at the Pro Gloria page on facebook, their gendarmes are getting close to completion( I think end of August was mentioned). The greens they have on the site include both armoured, part armoured and plain barded horses. With the different horse and gendarmes that are going to be supplied there should be 300+ permutations. I have some of their landesknects they are slightly heavier in build but fit very comfortably with the Foundry figures.

Thanx, moonshado, I have allready a big bunch of pro gloria-landsknechts in the army (the big regiment in the AAR the first 4 ranks). Still some more in the leadpile and ordered a big deal last weekend...:)

But I am really interested in more of the new pro gloria stuff.

Finished a bunch of miniatures I bought.
Painted to a pretty good standard. Just added new pikes, 1 or 2 fleshtones and put all the individuel miniatures on an Impetus-base.

Always wanted an attacking pike unit... :o

Okay, this is pic-heavy... :D

I made a little "how-to-with-don". Its a very basic aproach to landsknecht-panting, but its a pretty quick one.
I painted up a bunch of Pro Gloria landsknecht. Really biutiful stuff.

Fist steps: cleaning an glueing.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/lk1_zpsd60e49fe.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/lk1_zpsd60e49fe.jpg.html')

Black undercoat.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/lk3_zpsc457e739.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/lk3_zpsc457e739.jpg.html')

Next the pikes. I use different lighter tones, foundry base sand A for example...

Next are the faces.
I used a foundry triade.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/lk5_zpsf64c75b3.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/lk5_zpsf64c75b3.jpg.html')

Little thread necromancy here, but I am back in the italian wars... :D

I wasn't too satisfied with my last playtests in autum, so I stumbled in other directions. Napoleonics, Conquistadores, tupi vs batokudo ...
But a few days ago I had the idea of making an all plastic-army for easier transpotation. I am playing pretty regular at a new club, but have to get all the minis and scenary there. So weight and space is an issue...

I had a few plastic components in the collection so far, but not enough even for a decent game.

So I painted some new troops. Perry plastics with a few metal heads.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/001_zps25dd44c7.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/001_zps25dd44c7.jpg.html)

I found a very cool german ruleset, wich allows me to game with just 6 units and still get some feeling for the pike and shot era.
So this could be an "army"...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/002_zps1f072995.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/002_zps1f072995.jpg.html)

And I even finally painted some horses...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/003_zpsf3b516bb.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/003_zpsf3b516bb.jpg.html)

Stay tuned... :D

Nice to see you back in The Italian Wars, was missing your posts of some very nice figures. Like these. Is it possible for you to give us some close ups of the other stand of pikes and the gunners/crossbowmen? If you are now switching to plastics I guess you will be over the moon when ProGloria bring out their plastic landesknechts.

Painted today a new pikeblock.

I had painted a few sienna troops last year and always liked their limited colour sheme. Black and white...

And while I was on my way, I thought perhaps its a good idea to take a fefw pics.

Step 1: find an old box in the lead erm platic pile... 8o

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s1_zps90cf36fb.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s1_zps90cf36fb.jpg.html')

Did the flags right in the bin and on it goes with glue and a knife.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s2_zps795d9326.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s2_zps795d9326.jpg.html')

Missed the next step, so right away with undercoat and silver.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s3_zps97eb938e.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s3_zps97eb938e.jpg.html')

After that I paited some browns and the skin...

Very nice. some nice painting of the patterns- particularly like the flames on the legs. Amazing that all of those just took 7 hours- I would be happy if i could get one figure done in that time.

You are certainly producing figures fast. I have not even had time to compliment you on some very nice handgunners and you have already displayed some fine horsemen. I love your use of the distinctive patterns to make these figures so unequivocally Italian.
Can I ask what colours you used for the woodwork of the handguns? It looks exactly the colour I always try to achieve and never quite manage

I am sorry about the handgun colours: its just a wild mix of Foundry browns. Spearshaft A, chestnut C...even Flesh B...:D

I managed to paint a new unit for the game tonight. Some crossbowmen for siena...

Hopfully I get them based, after work.

It certainly has something to do with the limited colour palette. I just paint 4 Colours, wich is not very time consuming...;)

Gotta ask, what German rules set you mentioned a page or two ago? And do unit leaders need to be based on round bases?

The ruleset is called Kugelhagel. Its card-driven and you activate unit for unit, not one side and then the other.
Works very well for me...
And you could base your leaders as you find appropriate.

We played another game this evening. 4 Players with 5-6 units. No leaders were used.

Couldn't do enough pics, because I was busy running the game. So just a few impressions.

Overview of the battelfield.

What a great idea. Nice conversions  :)

Great looking battlefield too.
(Except for the doormat - I know it's a popular wargaming tabletop feature, but I've never been convinced by the 'a slab of doormat looks like a field of crops' notion. But apart from that - the trees and buildings and base boards - all gorgeous :))

Okay, just a quick update gefore tonights club game of Itaian Wars.

Just finished a few more miins and some basing...

Added a few crossbowmen with pavaises to my siena troops.

And here the troops from around last week.

Its a shame, that there are so few plastic poses. Should have get some metal, but that would be against my "all plastic" approach...;)

So, Siena is finished.
Time for some new army... :D

@Moonshadow
Yes, there are more periods.
Ill try and get some pics over here ...this time in the right board.

@fastolfrus
I will look it up. Not sure if there is any link.
BTW, the rules are for napoleonics and we use houserules to get the right feeling.
Like Pike and Shotte: napo rules with some addons... ;)

But it works pretty well, esp. for multiplayer culb night games... :)
Its more a beer and brezel approach.

Don

Nice group, that standard looks very good. Where did you "borrow" Samuel's shield from?

Okay, here just a few impressions of our little campaign, wich startet yesterday.
We are five players, repesenting 5 powers: venice, florence, milano, genovese and the papal state.

Did not manage to take lots of pics, because I was busy game mastering.

We played a "king of the hill" and a "capture the town" in a mixed 2 vs. 2.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s1_zpseef9a30a.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s1_zpseef9a30a.jpg.html')

Here are the forces of milano and genevese troops fighting it out on the hill.

And my brave papal troops trying to get in the town...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s2_zpsfd2e225e.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s2_zpsfd2e225e.jpg.html')

And the campaign map so far.
No conquests in the first round, so you only se the starting positions.

Brill stuff- really looks like a game that i would have enjoyed playing  8) 8) 8).

What colours were used on the terrain boards to get that general colour? It's the colour that I've been looking to do but can't figure out what emulsions to buy!!??

Any help would very much be appreciated  :)

I' ll try to build a big cannon for our games, more as a mission marker, the actually a field piece...;)

Its a 1/72-modell by zvezda.

Beautifull modell, fits pretty well together.

Have to scratchbuild some crewmen...:)

Are there any special bonuses for having / by occupying certain map areas/types?

I need to get that Zvezda cannon too!  ;D

Post by: DonVoss on April 12, 2014, 05:30:23 PM
Thank you...;)

@Special rules for areas
Each special area gives you one advantage:
Taverne = taverne: you get W3+1 rerolls during the game
Hospiz = hospital: you can remove W3+1 woundmarkers during the game
Schmiede = forge: you can upgrade one horse to heavy horse or upgrade one cannon to heavy cannon
Kirche = church: once in the game you can reorder one unit for free

Before battle you can choose 1 advantage from the provinces you own (attacker and defender).

Please pardon me for not translating all the campaign rules, takes me far too long. Bad english, lack of time... ;)

Cheers,
Don

Thanks for explaining that much :)

One question though, how about difference between field and forest areas? Just to contribute what kind of terrain is to be used or any other significance?
Title: Re: The Great Italian Wars for "Pike and Shotte"

Okay. In wooden areas you get a free bandit unit as the defender. In a field area you get a small advantage as the attacker.

Posted the bandit archers a few days ago:

Thanx, Bezzo for your kind words...;)

I painted 4 parts of the holy family.
The are religious statues wich are part of the campaign backstory, in fact the reason why the 5 powers came to the area in the first place.
As a game mechanic the statues are a kind of tiebreker: if at the end 2 or more parties have the same number of parts of the holy family, th one with the omst past parts is the winner.
And they give an advantage, if you take the risk, brigning them to a battle.

And a few WIP shots.

I managed to play a small game after work today.

We played on a really tiny mat, just 60x75 cm. Each player got 5 units wich started off the board.

Here are just a few impressions.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s1_zps1a17ab84.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s1_zps1a17ab84.jpg.html)

I got some early victory points for being the first at the objective (holy statue).

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s2_zps7a127098.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s2_zps7a127098.jpg.html)

We played mostly in the conrfield with some shooting on the flanks.

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s3_zpsc94edad7.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s3_zpsc94edad7.jpg.html)

A great game taking in account that we had so few units and so little space...

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s4_zps07046ea0.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s4_zps07046ea0.jpg.html)

In the end I got my foot knights in combat, who won the day...:)

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Italian%20wars/s5_zpse33114b6.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Italian%20wars/s5_zpse33114b6.jpg.html)

A very cool and satisfying after work game.

Okay. In wooden areas you get a free bandit unit as the defender. In a field area you get a small advantage as the attacker.

Posted the bandit archers a few days ago:

The heads are from the GW empire troops.
Not sure if missle or helbard/spear...

Little bit too big for the tiny histo bodys...;)

The bodys are from various plastic sprues.

Don
