Title: Plains Indians - Comparison of Conquest, Foundry and Artizan?
Post by: AlexM on June 04, 2013, 02:20:55 AM
Hey everyone...

I'm trying to pick some minis for a Plains Indians Warband, was originally going to do Sioux or Cheyenne, but the Conquest Comanche are very nice!
How do Foundry Plains Indians size up with Artizan or Conquest?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

The Foundry Plains Indians will be fine alongside the Conquest Comanches although you will notice a slight difference. The Conquest sculpts are slender sculpts in comparison.

Artizan do not make plains Indians, only Apache. They are going to be slightly taller than the Foundry Apache, although t here is not much in it.

I have Foundry & Artizan figures mixed in my Apache warbands and the mix quite well.

My plan was to use Foundry/Conquest Indians, and Artizan 7th Cav, no problems there then?

There shouldn't be any problem with that then. However, you shouldn't pass up Eric's Comanches, they are beautiful figures. They are way down my priority list right now but I picked them up as soon as Eric released them.

Hmm..I had that thought about them too...The good news is LOTOW Posses/War Party's aren't large, so there's no reason why I can't do Comanches and Cheyenne or Sioux :)

Yep, no problem there. :)

Whats wrong with the Foundry cavalry, why Artizan ???

I only ask as I prefer the Foundry cavalry over the Artizan ones, some of my favourite figures from Copplestone's time at Foundry.

To be honest, there's no reason why I'm picking one over the other, just what's available :)
I didn't see too many options for foot figures for their 7th Cav line, is there something I'm missing?

Foundry are the only people that do Sioux/Cheyenne Indians, so there's no choice there!

I have all the Foundry Cavalry from when they were first released back in the 1990s. At the time they produced a dismounted version of every figure, so you could play skirmish games and identify every character whether he be on foot or mounted.

I've just had a look at the Foundry website and they have two Cavalry collections, which by the looks of them match all the figures I have. I counted thirty one pairs of matched figures (Both foot and Mounted versions) Take out the Little Big Horn personalities pack and you have two guidons, two buglers, two sergeants and about twenty troopers. I think thats more variety than the Artizan ones.

Both equally great ranges fo figures though, tough choice for you ???

Aren't the Foundry ones small? I thought the 7th Cav figs were the same size as their old townsfolk range which is definately on the small side.

No, they are taller, not massively so, but certainly taller than the very first figures Copplestone did in the range which were the gunfighters, Mexicans and townsfolk.

I would agree that Foundry and Artizan are safe bets but the Dixon dismounted US cavalry is very good, must be made by some other designer as it doesn´t have the balloon head like the ACW range does:

No. Foundry figures are a bit better fed than the Artizan, and there's some thicker detail on some items which can be easier to paint. The advantage Artizan has is that the saddle and horse furniture is cast on the horse, while Foundry casts it as part of the rider. The two lines will mix well, especially in a skirmish game, as long as you use the same painting style.

I don't have any cavalry, but I have Dixon figures mixed into my Apache warbands too. They are hard to tell apart from the Foundry figures once painted & mounted.
