Well, raging cold these last days, sneezes like crazy, not painting of fig possible , so handcrafting ;-)

Thus a first tower for my Yamashiro...

Walls are PlasticCraftGames , who need a lot of work but give an admirable and flexible result !

The tower a mixture of kitbashing (PCG on the 1st floor, modified) and scratching ...

I shall try to paint a max this WE...

It looks extremely good, but are you planning on putting an edging around the lower edge of the fortified gate? It looks like the underside of it was tacked on with plans to cover up the joint as everything seems to stop right above it...perhaps a set of beams around the lower side of it.

Yes , it's planned !

In fact , the upper is removable , i could made an "open" version of the 1st floor and interchange between both !

Hi !

I planned to add some walls , and to build a rural village ...

Maybe a big shrine !?

I've got 4 months (3 1/2 in fact) for my Sengoku Jidaï project before showing it at a convention in Paris , France

The project is : the Yamashiro , a rural village , some landscape (hills , coast , woods ... ) and an 28mm army with around a dozen of units (and Taïko drum , bamboos screenings , etc ... ) ...

Maybe building the interior of Yamashiro if i have time enough !

The army is a Mori's one (With Kikkawa / Kobayakawa / Murakami major allies , and some minor allies : Amano , Sigi , Myoshi ... )

Byblos, your project is really really nice!

If you want to, i've just found a very quick method to build wooden lattices, that are really useful for japanese buildings. Unfortunately at the moment i don't have many pictures, and i might think to write a tutorial on my website... but just to give an idea:

Well with my research I realized that at the beginning of the period that I want to play (say between 1515 and 1575), there was still very little castles with walls and towers built on stones basement !

In addition in the Mori region - Chugoku - population density and standard of living were lower than in the plains of central Japan, because Chugoku was (and still is!) a very mountainous region!

In fact there were mostly Yamashiro in wood and plaster, consisting in several plateaux developed (and fortified) connected to each other!

It's very interesting !

In fact I am going to build a whole series of towers, walls and simple buildings, in foamboard and balsa, flexible: it is relatively long to do, but not very expensive, so little by little there is way to do something very nice!

A prototype: a wall portion 20 cm long:

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0031.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2838)

Of course my stone-basement castle remains quite valid for the most powerful fortresses or the later period, say after 1550 ...

A nice test piece. Will the posts on the end be half widths? And how will you deal with corners?

The posts at the ends are the same width as the others (they are already very fine)

For the corners I'm going to do corner elements, logically I'm making one this weekend

Hi !

Here are some more lengths of walls including a "corner"

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0041.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2848)

Next achievement: a door

For now I realize these sections of walls using only falls of cardboard and balsa! (I preciously keep the falls from a certain height, well I'm doing well!)

I have enough to make at least 3 or even 4 meters of walls, I will work on plans of prototypical Yamashiro to make the whole as flexible as possible ...

To be continued ...

Hi !

Back after an absence due to my PC down!

I continue to experiment, always in the optics of building modular elements allowing me to constitute Japanese castles as well of the beginning of XVIe S (Wood and plaster) that of the second half of XVIe S (with the multiplication of the bases in stones and roofs with tiles)

Here are two fortified doors: note that the door itself (the ground floor what) is the same, I simply interchanged the floor ...

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0044.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2851)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0043.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2850)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0045.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2852)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0046.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2853)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0047.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2854)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0048.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2855)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0048.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2855)

For later versions, I first thought of getting inspired by Tsuwano Castle:

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/tsuwan10.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2857)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/tsuwan11.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2859)
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/tuwano10.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2858)

Well, it's a beautiful castle, it's in the Chugoku, I can adapt the dimensions to fit on a large table 240 X 180, the highest court will culminate to 40/45 cm high, there are Stairs and stairs,  very interesting ...

But it's been a long time since I spotted Bitchu Castle - Matsuyama!

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/bitchu10.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2860)

Same: Chugoku, adaptable on large table, different levels, flanks, what to make a beautiful piece!

I think I will work to the maximum modularity to be able to more or less do the 2 ...

We will go slowly but surely: I will start by assembling some lengths of walls (2 different types), a guard tower (Yagura) of about 15 cm side and 2 levels, a dungeon (Tensho) of 3 levels at least, and 25 cm side (this will be my maximum) plus some gates more or less complex / fortified, and I will start working on the stony bases to see how I will work on modularity and differences in level ...

There's work, it's quite stressful, but it's exciting, and at the materials level it's not very expensive ...

To be continued ...

PS Do not hesitate to tell me which of the 2 castles you prefer, and why!

PPS Level figs I have enough to make a great army Mori (already well advanced), a very large army of Ikkis (monks fighters, Ronins and peasants in arms) about 205 figures that have the distinction of being all different each other (!), and a small Amako army. (I also have a big Ming army, I have to mount an army of Koreans Choson). And I continue to work on a system of campaign, little by little it is rather complex, I will surely create several situations of departure according to the times ...

I don't have a preference of castle - both are interesting (I think your idea of being able to do both is the way to go).

I continue my research!

Here are some illustrations from Rekishi Gunzo (volumes on Mori Motonari and Mori clan)

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/img_0011.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2866)

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/img_0012.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2867)

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/img_0014.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2869)

Besides that these illustrations are superb and inspiring, they confirm to me what my research revealed to me: that these famous castles, all plaster, tiles and stone bases, monumental, date from the end of the 16th century at least, and represent mainly the next period called "Edo" ...

Until around at least 1550/60, Japanese castles are basically made of wood!

The first dungeon dates from ... 1557!

On the other hand we can see on some illustrations that  there is an intermediate period or at the foot of the mountain there are already more evolved buildings while on the heights the wooden Yamajiro continues to dominate .. .

It is very interesting, and it encourages me to realize a whole series of buildings in wood and plaster, as well as walls of this kind, to reproduce these famous wooden castles type Yamajiro which seem for a long time to have been the norm, and still more at Chugoku.

And if you look at one of the illustrations, we see one of these Yamajiro "hybrids" (with some stone bases) subjected to an artillery fire! We are clearly advanced in the sixteenth century!

I will still make a beautiful "black" castle with its various levels, its keep and its stone bases, but I will certainly realize what to do with these famous wooden Yamajiro!

You have not finished seeing my achievements;)

Great "Tensho" WIP

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f97/13/09/54/58/dscf0050.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/13095458/2870)

Well, it's going to take some time, huh!

What is interesting is that for a footprint not much larger than my little dungeon, I should have a much larger interior area!

If everything goes well there will be 5 floors

Subsequently I would do an interior design

I will be inspired by a castle described in an Osprey:

Floor 1 = living rooms (4)
Floor 2 = weapons and armor storage
Floor 3 = Living rooms

For the rest I would be logical: the ground floor for example will surely be a "big room" ...

Hi all !

After a long period of historical research on the 16th century Chugoku, and the continuation of my campaign / wargame system project on the subject (interesting but complex to develop, I'll keep you informed), back to the Yamajiro!

I finished the walls of the main courtyard, and the "back" door.

Well the rest will be quite complex: I have to start working on the different levels of terrain and first (I will advance in concentric circles) the highest level where befitting this for ;)tified ensemble!

(I will also have to add a watchtower, and the front door too!)

And of course painting!

I hope by the end of this month, beginning of next month also resume painting figs!

Big job in perspective (not counting the Portuguese project in India on which I work in parallel).

So: to be continued

Hi all !

The following !

I put the photos in bulk, sorry: oops:

The "cathedral" is none other than the internal structure, the skeleton of what will be a large hill, leveled at its top, on which is the most important courtyard of the fortress, main courtyard protected in its lower levels by a few terraces fortified with palisades.

This structure will be covered with glued cardboard, then coated with air dying modeling clay, with here and there rocky areas and vegetation.

There will be 2 other level hills, smaller, with as many courtyards (there protected by palisades) and other palisaded terraces ...

These secondary terraces will not have a fortified door, but each will have a small watchtower.

Make way for photos:

Hi all !

The work continues!

Do you remember that great fortified hill? Well forget it!

Too big, requires too many materials, too much room to store ... It will be for later ...

I keep the basic idea: an "evolving" castle, we start with palisades and wooden watchtowers, we can replace certain fortifications and buildings and end in walls, plastered watchtowers and a large keep. ..

Be careful, this is work in progress, so far from over!

Well, I realize that I forgot the large wooden watchtower in the lower courtyard, and that the fortified entrance to the lower courtyard does not really look good, I would replace it with a very simple entrance, without flourish ...

I also progressed on my big dungeon, for later times ...
