Title: Akula's Dune Terrain Project (Update 26/1/14)
Post by: AKULA on June 08, 2013, 11:11:01 PM
Ok....new terrain project.

Dune, based upon the 1984 David Lynch film, plus additional source material...

(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/AKULADEEP/Dune/016_zpsf1cf1833.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/AKULADEEP/media/Dune/016_zpsf1cf1833.jpg.html)

Tempted to build a ten foot long animatronic sandworm, but first i'll start with something "simpler".

 :D

First section of the Citadel...based upon a 450mm x 450mm base, its approx. 500 mm tall....open on two sides, the front will have some steps (28mm TAG for scale).

(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/AKULADEEP/Dune/87822204-52c0-404d-9d4a-4c916d21fa63_zps14a1e64e.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/AKULADEEP/media/Dune/87822204-52c0-404d-9d4a-4c916d21fa63_zps14a1e64e.jpg.html)

The "front door" is c400mm off the table top.

This first section is pretty robust with a MDF core, as it will allow me to bolt on other pieces as I go.

Yup, the Roleplaying game print run was tiny, before it got pulled....a real shame, but they go for a small fortune on fleabay.

No pressure then....  lol . I realise that I could pick something less well-known for a project, as everyone has their own idea of how you should "do Dune properly" but I like a challenge.

I once had plans to do the whole thing in 6mm. Then I could fit a ten feet sandworm without any issues ;)

It's not bad actually, even allowing for the interior that will be added - weight wise it's like two of the raised sections from my Salute 2012 Planet of the Apes game, which I managed to lug around...as its one piece, it might even be easier.

The rest of the citadel will be in much more manageable pieces, but this section needed to be robust as it will have other sections on top....yes it's is going to be tall.

 ;)

Great start!! Looking forward to how this will go. Interestingly your the same generation of Dune appreciation as I am (with look of miniatures etc). The stumbling block for me has not only been suitable miniatures  ;) but also rules...what with shields etc. have you got an idea of a system your going to use?

Nice links!

I'll probably end up writing a set of rules, as I'll need something fast play.  As all of my rules are AR:SE (Akula's Rules:Skirmish Edition) these could end up as either "Sandy AR:SE" or "Spicey AR:SE"....  lol

Either way, will be free to download.

Anyway....now we've got the difficult dilemma of what to call the rules out of the way....  ;)

My basic plan is to game the Harkonnen attack so depending upon how big I go with the citadel I'll look at building the outer walls as well.

All of the boards will be 450mm x 450mm so I can switch around or use in scenarios where I don't need the citadel itself.

I'll be following this topic with the biggest interest. I'm a fan of the novels and the 2 video games (on amiga computer). THe videogame from Cryo (Dune 1) especially inspired me a lot.

What minis will you use to represent Dune characters ?

Very interesting project, and Iīm really interested in the figures you are going to use. Dune is, by far, my favourite SF book and movie.

What minis  ?

My plan is to continue to extend my generic space-opera figure project (below):

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=50885.0

Once Ian has finished the trooper conversions, I've got plans for some hazmat-types plus some characters that could potentially be suitable for sci-fi games....

An added (intentional) bonus is that my chosen sculptors - Ian Mountain (sculpts also for Crooked Dice) and Kev White (Hasslefree) have also produced other suitably-sized figures that could be used alongside my own minis with either the right paint job, or head swoops/minor conversions.

 :)

Well it might end being almost that tall....the Washington Monument in my last (PotA) games was 4' tall, but sat on top of a 6" raised subway section.

Similar sort of principle to your photo, just with rocks on the other side.

just wondering if youve seen these threads here on LAF ?

I have seen them, and I wish Andy every success with his own project, but to be completely honest I won't be buying some of his character figures, even though it would be a cheaper option than commissioning my own.

Please don't misinterpret this as having a pop at Andy's project (I'm not) - we aren't in competition.

I have commissioned sculpts from Whiffwaff (who sculpted Andy's greens) previously.  Adam (Whiffwaff) is very quick (and cheap) because he uses dollies - this comes at a cost though in terms of quality, and I'm afraid I don't like the way that he sculpts faces and hands. Additionally, his dollies are on the "short and chunky" side which means they aren't a good fit IMHO with Crooked Dice and Hasslefree miniatures which I also plan on using.

I understand Whiffwaffs business model, and I'm pleased that it works well for him - if you are on a limited budget, and need some figures quickly I'd recommend him (his communication is very good also).  I think his aliens are generally speaking better than his humans for the reasons i've outlined above.  IMHO the best human minis that Adam has sculpted are the snow troopers, which use Hasslefree guns, and wear hoods/balaclavas and mittens.

As I mentioned already, my plan for this project is to extend the group of figures that I've commissioned, and include character options - the heads are swappable, and as I've used the same sculptors as Crooked Dice/Hasslefree my own figures will be compatible with their own extensive ranges.

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=50885.0

When I started planning my space-opera type project I went with the best sculptors I could afford - Kev White, and Ian Mountain - I've also got some miniatures that Andrew Rae that may make an appearance as well. They cost more, and take longer, but I am pleased with the end result, as I'm sure AndyW is with his own project which has bags of character.

 :)

You have a very nice range of figures just begining here, and I expect to buy them for some of my Science Fiction ideas (including Dune, of course), because they have a great quality and are totally compatible with two great ranges of minis, Haslefree and Crooked Dice.

Great terrain project, too!

Quick update, been working upon the "second stage" for the citadel....4'high Washington Monument for scale purposes....

(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/AKULADEEP/Dune/005_zps68e7fd13.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/AKULADEEP/media/Dune/005_zps68e7fd13.jpg.html)

Just to the left will be a supporting piece of citadel which will house a Ornithopter hanger.

Top 5 levels are a separate section - if some of the lines look a little off, its because some of the end-support sections are intentionally angled.

(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/AKULADEEP/Dune/003_zpsdf649af6.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/AKULADEEP/media/Dune/003_zpsdf649af6.jpg.html)

The "window" is made from packaging that comes with a iPad.

Looks great. Having been inspired by the afore mentioned White Dwarf article and more recently Jens 'City of Darkness' thread, I've been planning a vertical board too. So I'm wondering what height have you set your floors to? I'm thinking 3", so that its possible to get your hands in and all those models waving swords, etc ridiculously high.
Looking forwards to seeing more of this, if its anything like your previous projects its going to be good.

Yup 3" or thereabouts, apart from the lowest level which is 6".  I messed about for about a week ....trying different dimensions, going away, coming back for another look, before gluing anything together.  In terms of sight-lines and gameplay it seems right for the figures etc.

Bit more done.

The "ramp" on the left of the first picture is where the steps will go up the main entrance - the bark is just to indicate where the rocky sides will be built up.  The right hand board also needs building up, but you can see where the Ornithopter hangar will be.  TAG NBC troopers are performing as stand-ins for Sardakaur in the photo...am sure I will have more suitable figures by the time its finished....

Do your ramps/bases get some sort of magnetic treatment? Otherwise, I couldn't see figures standing on the ramps at all steadily. (Or maybe that's part of the ruleset - if anyone bumps the table during the ascent, you have to start all over again!)

The main "ramp" will actually be steps, it's just there to show where they will be - the actual ramp in the right fore ground will have a rough surface, so don't envisage I'll need a Sky lift ;-)

Thought i'd better get a Ornithopter kit made up (still needs painting), seeing as they will be a feature of the game I have planned....

Revell kit very OOP.... but 1/48th scale so pretty much ideal for the figures (figure shown is one of my 28mm Garrison troopers for scale purposes).

Have built it with the landing gear up (ie in the flying position) as its pretty fragile.

Great looking build - BTW!  Am clicking away waiting for updates!

March them up one flight at a time . . . .

Loving this so far Akky. I am already making 'pew, pew' sounds in my head and imagining troops stumbling as they are hit rushing out of the door and down the stairs. Movie flashbacks! 8)

Exactly.

 :)

The alternative is a set of steps that don't look anything like the actual steps from the film.  Each step is 5mm, and take up 12" of table in length....given the board is 3'x3' I don't want them any larger so the landings are the next best thing.

I'm afraid you will also require handrailing, visibility strips to all step nosings and corduroy tactile paving extending for 800mm (16mm at 1:50) from the top and bottom step nosings. This will have to be buff coloured if the UK regulations apply. They're only asking for a claim otherwise.

I have to put up with this stuff all the time! I was told once that I needed to put two runs of hand railing in, one at 900mm high and one at 600mm high for persons of 'short stature'. I asked him who he was expecting, the Time Bandits?

The problem is: I know he is telling the truth.
We have had the 'Time Bandit' variety put into the museum where I work as we have a high volume of child visitors.

I have no idea how children managed to visit the museum in the 100 years BEFORE they were installed!

Haven't written the rules yet, but they will be quick and bloody

Splendid, really like the rock face pattern. Any tips on how you achieved the effect and how you applied the filler?  :D

Layers of blue stuff, carved with a straight bladed kitchen knife, and then the finer bits with a scalpel. Polyfilla in the crevasses to smooth out some of the worst  it's, and then a quick going over with sandpaper - left some of the filler on to get a rough feel.

Just how many times have you watched Dune in the past six months to get this done?

Probably not enough times...I just don't have enough time to get it detail specific.  The interior will be an impression...depends upon how much time I have to complete it, paint the figures, write the rules etc...

Is that a shield generator in the basement?

Yup, hard polystyrene from ancienottis.

Cheers all, was beginning to think it was looking a bit Blue Peter to be honest, but the paint seems to knit it together.

Bit more paint slapped on, and some figures in the shot this time for scale purposes.  Not quite flush as still drying.

No Harvester yet...wrong side of the shield wall for this game.

Looks good Matt, you thinking of using a textured exterior paint to add well...texture? ;)

My only thought on it is because you have to dismantle it you have the lines for each section. May be you could cut some rocky outcrops out and use magnetics to stick them over the straight cuts?

Just an idea, will see the end result in April eh? ;)
