Title: Space Terrain inspiration wanted!
Post by: darquebus on May 02, 2008, 03:59:21 AM
Space terrain? With all these great modelers around the forum, I wondered if anybody had done some "pulpy" space terrain. I have built a lot of VSF, Steam dark and gritty SF stuff and other terrain but never tried "nice" SF terrain.
I just wanted to get away from the usual dark dusty destroyed industrial complexes and do something shiny and 1940s space stuff. I wanted to start building something and I'm looking for some inspiration. I saw the space ship that was somewhere ion the forum and that is exactly the right direction.
But what about actual landscapes? Flash Gordon does mostly seem to run through rocky crater landscapes, but there are also some cool cities. The only thing is it has to be "playable"!?

Any ideas or models you'd like to share

Maybe I should have put this into "future wars". But the pulp part is important...

8) yes that;s the right direction...I like especially your trees, it is a good move away from "standard" jungle trees

Depending on how much work you want to do there are some ideas:

Floating lands (you know, the ones that look like severed mountain tops reversed) either use them on a starfield-board, or paint it with some Landscape and use some of those fluffy stuff (cotton pads?) for clouds

Cliff settlements (houses buildt along a large cliff, but you might end up with a vertical gaming table)

Ming Style cities They are not that difficult. Just build some Oriental and Arabian looking buidlings, add some struts and walkways and spray everthing in gold or brass

:) of course...all these YES records I've always found so cool because of the floating ilands...why didn't I think of that  :?  Could be tricky to buiid though... but would look cool. Maybe keeping to a smaller size

...I think the "vertical gaming board" is actually a very interesting idea, I will put some thought into that...

ok my plan (some time in the future) is using these

1. Plants bright colors like blue ,red so maby blue grass and red palmtrees .
also some round ball like fungi .

2.board/tabel red like the mars .

3. Rocks/mauntain  normal sand color

4. Buildings mostly round/ball like with big windows

also a desert planet is easy to build and you can use some parts for other wargaming .

only thing you have to make is build some dino skeletons and cactus like plants (big ones )

I also make some men eating plants for my lost world tabel but they easely can use as space plants .
The plans are made from real dry plants.

I haven't gotten around to building anything yet. However, I do have some ideas in the back of my head, mostly having to do with the odd plastic container from packaged food, glue, colors etc. I've always seen those as a solid base to build scifi buildings from as a lot of them are somewhat domeshaped or at least look like cylinders. Giving them a little workover should lead to some acceptable buildings.

How about vegetation like this:

I painted it green but bright colours might look good for pulp scifi. They are just made out of straws melted over a lighter.
Another possibility might be bubbling pools like this:

This is actually 15mm scale but the pool would work for 28mm too. It's just a bit of suitable anaglypta wallpaper.

Positively sick. Man, that looks great. I have to try that plastic tube and lighter thing. And the pool is very nice, too. :o

Cheers for your kind words, Chris  :)
I've put a little more detail about how I made them on the teragensis website. See http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page533.html

hello again;

here's another link to some interesting terrain.  Its a table of floating asteroids used in an Atlanta Golden Growler tournament a few years ago.

Sorry the picture is so small.

Alex Raymonds cartoon strip Flash Gordon was heavily influenced by the Art Deco look, in archetecture and the strip itself. There is a futuristic building with something of a Deco look (and come to think of it an alien 'pyramid' available from Hirst arts. Terragenesis also has something labled deco which I havent seen.

There's a Tau city that has buildings with nice clean curved lines and the like that might be good for inspiration:
