Title: Hadley's Hope Redux (photo heavy)
Post by: Braz on June 26, 2013, 12:16:34 PM
Major Projectomancy!
Apologies to those following my earlier project as RL took me away from gaming and I've been catching up on the various projects since and great stuff everyone! My original project thread can be found here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=20983.0

What I had originally wanted was a flexible, modular corridor system with set pieces that I could store easily but for some reason long forgot, I went with a static single piece behemoth. Well enough of that! So I took various implements to the behemoth and chopped it down to more manageable size and it went from one huge piece:

to this:

Now I can store this somewhere. It fits in a box from the grocery that is just the right size.

I created tiles with a standard size of 5x5inch dimensions to be the basis of my modular system. Everything is based on the 5 inch dimension. 5x5, 5x10, 10x10, etc. This allows them to fit together nicely. The tiles are mostly 1/8th inch (3mm) hardboard with some being 1/4inch (6mm) thick. More on this in a later post. The tiles are 2 inches tall at the highest point and this keeps the tiles accessible for game play and storage. Here is an in progress tile:

I started by making tiles to recreate the original layout of Hadley's Hope as well as additional tiles for flexibility and interest.
Two special tiles were needed to adapt the two existing modules (Ops/Medlab and Security/Medical). One has a connector off center and the other is 5x7 inches. Here are the two special tiles.

Here is the layout of level two:

And here is level one:

A two inch adaptor module may be needed if I want the levels to align dimension wise but not essential. That's what the gaps in the layout are.

I have been plugging away an hour here a few hours there and a few minutes here, probably on average an hour a day to get these results in about a month. These pics are from about two months ago and progress is continuing at a slower pace...plus I can't find the more recent pictures on my harddrive ???.

Material  cost:
Coffee sticks about 4 packs of 150 sticks each for $1 from dollar store
Bamboo skewers $1 from dollar store
1 package wide craft sticks ($4 with coupon at Michaels)
2’x2’ 1/8th inch (3mm) hardboard x4 ($1.50 each)
2’x2’ 1/4th inch (6mm) hardboard x2 ($2.5 each)
2 cans fusion spraypaint ($4 each)
Craft paints
nylon screen door mesh (left over scraps $1-2?)
Aleenes Tacky Glue and superglue $10
Cereal card free with breakfast
So total about $45 with lots of left overs. Add maybe 20% for things I missed and this includes many more tiles than depicted above.

Note:The coffee stir sticks and craft sticks are a real mixed bunch quality wise; being warped and deformed. Sorted through them and about half are of no use but kept them for use in other projects (fencing, run down barns and the kids love them for arts and crafts)

Here are some other pictures:

C&C welcome
Cheers.

That's a rather impressive layout  8)

Looking forward to seeing it continue  :)

A coat of primer wouldn't go amiss to tie it all together as some areas are a tad difficult to make out.

Hi All,
I'm glad to be back and thanks all for all the positive comments! Coming from such esteemed masters of the craft, doubly so.

@Jimbibbly. I agree totally. Done on most of the tiles already. I'm still trying to find those in-progress pictures that shows that off. The primer really ties the tiles together. The spray primer helps seal the hardboard/craft sticks so it does not soak up paint like crazy and prevent warping.

@Michka. Your project is quite amazing too. Love what you've done.

Here are some of the first tiles nearing completion that are on my workbench . The walls are not glued in place yet to facilitate access while detailing.  Still to do: add some grime/wash, add door controls, add more grebbles a few more labels and paint the outside walls once they are glued in place. I'm debating adding light bars (non functional) to the side rails. Have to make the door for the left tile but will probably make them all later on. The doors slide in from the top in grooves in the entrance.

Awesome I built one of the modules and was sick of it :-)   you just astound me, love the new take seems your scales worked up about the same as mine (that I had to tone down)
I had to watch aliens and the making off and stills hundreds of times to get the layout down to pat. :-) look forward to seeing the rest of your take on it... and please please please don't let it go so long next time even if its a 2word post like "still here"

Looking good but might suggest painting the back of the angled walls black as with them being grey it detracts from the rest of the piece.

@Jimbibbley. Great point James. As that is just the colour of the primer I used, I'll paint some test pieces. Much appreciated as I had not considered that.

@WayneN  Will be around more even if just to indicate I'm still alive.  I agree getting the layout as right as possible was difficult and there are still a few things which I know are wrong. It doesn't help that there was cinematic licence used that does not jive between the exterior and interior. Large projects can be daunting and I work on it in small amounts and on several projects at once to avoid burnout and keep my sanity. It does take longer though.

Ooo, just had another thought.

For photographs, how about placing a bit of black card over the top with holes cut out to represent light and then place a bright bulb over the whole thing and take your photo. It might look rather atmospheric (or not, admittedly, it's only a quick thought).

This is great, inspirational.
I have just recently started my aliens collection and really want to do something like this.
How long have you been working on this? It really must be time consuming.
I have been gathering information and ideas and this will contribute greatly.
Hadley's Hope is a great theme to work off of.
Good show. More please.

@Miniman
It's not that labour intensive as the basic tiles are constructed in assembly line fashion and a fairly standardized. I guesstimate maybe 20 hours (max) over a month to build all the un-primed tiles you see in the layout photos plus some. Just an hour here and 30 minutes there most days before going to work - middle of the night. I was working on other projects during that time too. What does take a while is drying of the glue but that is done in between sessions and having to wait so things are done in proper order. After that maybe an other guesstimated hour per 5x5 tile to paint and detail.

Most of the pieces are the same dimensions and quickly cut using a mitre saw or using templates. Bigger pieces are drawn on the hardboard and cut out then the smaller final pieces measured and cut right at the saw as I find it easier that way This takes into account the width of the saw blade so all the pieces end up the same size - well close enough for gaming purposes. Even non-standard tiles don't take that much more time being based on standard pieces mostly.

The two parts I find that take the longest are preparing the corridor side rails and cutting out the floor panels out of cereal card but even that doesn't take that long. Almost all pieces have templates or jigs that I built so it goes quickly. Just kind of boring at times.

Once I find those wayward photos I'll do a quick tutorial for the corridor pieces. I'll do one for a room assembly soon as I have a few rooms to assemble.

The highly detailed modules (ops/medlab  security/medical did take lots of time but these were from the initial project two years ago before the old project (and I) went on hiatus. Research and getting the details right is what took the longest part for that one and if you are not trying to be too accurate it shouldn't take that long.

BTW love what you've been doing on your Aliens thread.

That was a mouthful.
Question you are mainly using hardboard, cardboard, foamboard etc. What glues do you use?
I am thinking of using my supply of styrene but I will most likely use it up so I may go your route instead, haven't made up my mind yet. Styrene would be easy to use but may start to cost in the end if my supply runs out.
Another question is in your many pics I noticed a grating floor that is baffling me on how you made it.
They look the most like in the movie with the long square bars and crossbars every 2 or 3 feet. How you do that bro?

Oh and thanks for the comment on my thread but I haven't really done anything yet except collect mini's and information on this project. Like you said that takes time but I see it pays off looking at what you have done.

@Miniman. Good timing with your questions as I was just prepping a mini tutorial as I was making a few tiles.

The structure is made mostly of 1/8 and 1/4 inch hardboard as well as coffee stir and wide craft sticks for the structure. Plus cereal card, mounting board and bamboo sticks for detailing and extras. I use two glues for 95% of the tasks: Aleenes Tacky Glue (thick pva) and Lepage Pro Superglue (and sometimes carpenter's glue). The results are fairly bulletproof having dropped a few bases on a wood floor to no ill effect . There are pros and cons to each material but for cost, availability and ease of use I opted for these materials instead of styrene or casting.

Here is the tutorial which is still in progress
 (Part 1)

Here are the bases for the two tiles I am working on: a 5x15 inch long room and a triangle corridor junction I wanted for variety. The 5x15 tile is 1/4 inch thick hardboard while the corridor tile is two 1/8 thick pieces glued together to get to the standard height of 1/4 inch for the corridor deck. This gives a lower section for grebbles and piping to be placed. The sides are my standard 5 inches long so will join with all my existing tiles.

The corridor deck is made with cereal card and mosquito mesh for windows. Here I tack down the edges using superglue to keep it from moving in the next step.

Trim the excess mesh using a sharp craft knife leaving a few mm bear all around. Then paint on a 50/50 mix of water and PVA(tacky glue) all over to stick it down. Let dry.

Here is the dry piece. Next I cut out the corridor deck edges, bars and cross bars using a steel rule and a sharp knife.. For this piece I opted for just edges although you could have whatever pattern you wish. The trick is to be regular throughout where possible so the pieces look as part of a whole. Here I could only use the standard width of 5mm for the edging due to the irregular shape. No fancy geometry or measuring to get the dimensions right, I just used the deck piece itself to get the measurement.

Glue the piece down with tacky glue and voila. Just pressing down with your fingers for a few seconds for the glue to catch seems to do trick although you may wish to press it down under a weight.

Next the wall supports. The pieces are cut from a coffee stir stick using a standard template piece and by just pushing down with a craft knife. The supports are the same throughout my build so I use a jig I built (bottom right). One dab of superglue and press the pieces together a few seconds. I need 6 pieces with a single leg, three glued on one side, three glued on the other.

Glued in place using superglue.

Then all the joints are glued again using tacky glue. This combination gives a really strong bond that can accept abuse. This is only done in the recesses where they can't really be seen easily.

Next I made a template for the wall panel (in case I decide to reproduce it later)and cut out the panels out of mounting board. Again glued in place using superglue initially and then tacky glue.

The piece is drying right now before the last few steps are done prior to painting. Need to add the corridor shelf and piping.

Part 2 (5x15 room)

From a 5 inch wide piece of 1/8 inch thick (3mm) hardboard that I had precut anticipating further work on this project I cut out the walls for this room piece. The walls are 1-3/4 inch high and with the 1/4 inch floor piece gives a total height of 2 inches which is my standard for this project. This ensures ease of access during game play which can be an issue when the walls are too high.
Using a craft saw and a steel ruler for a guide I cut about half way through and then use a boxer cutter to finish off the cut. Let the blade do the cutting using several strokes. The precut with the craft saw makes a channel for the box cutter so the hardboard is not forced to the sides making for an ugly cut and makes the cutting much easier.

Sand the edges. Wear a dust mask - fine dust can be hazardous.

Cut a few posts/supports from 1/4 inch square poplar stick. Use a hobby mitrebox for straight cuts.

The cut pieces laid out.

The front middle wall will have no support from adjoining walls so some support posts will be added to the floor piece. Measure where the hole for the post will be, accounting for the wall thickness. Here I use a screw I had at hand to make the pilot hole to guide the drill. Drill a hole using a 1/4 inch bit. Trim the bottom of the support post to fit the hole. Glue in place making sure the post is perfectly vertical.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-261019135453-418332348.jpeg)(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-261019135453-418341055.jpeg)(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-261019135453-41835973.jpeg)

Glue the walls in place. Here is my jig to ensure the walls are and stay vertical when drying.

The corners are reinforced using cardstock strips on both the inside and outside of the corners.

I use a small jig (the bamboo stick thingy) to glue the door slot bracket in place. This ensures the door slots are vertical and of uniform depth. This room has two standard and one wide door.

The room ready to paint. Just need to add a few cardstock strips on the outside for detail.

Cheers

Not the same process he details with the 'hexagon', but with out the 60 degree cuts? I thought he just put the mesh down for the whole area that had them, and added runners to break up into panels.

Thanks all for the comments
@Miniman.
As Doug indicated regarding the grating floor, it is as described in the tutorial (part one) photos 2 to 5 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55415.msg661898#msg661898) but for straight corridor vs a hexagon shape. I called it the "corridor deck" instead of the grating floor. My bad for that. It's window screening mesh used to keep insects out (the plastic variety), cardboard from a cereal box (Rice Krispies I believe but whatever cereal you prefer  ;D) cut out to make the bars and crossbars and some glue. That's it. I spray painted it black, painted the bars and crossbars with Folk Art Gun Metal craft paint and dry brushed the mesh with the same colour. It's that simple and inexpensive too.

One thing to note, I use a ball point pen and ruler sometimes to draw in the separation between the floor grates when there are multiple grates on an individual 5x5 tile. By pressing hard enough it scores the cardboard and gives the illusion of the gap between grates instead of cutting and fitting each one individually and looks better. I just make a double width cross bar in that case before scoring and cutting it out.

@Braz As said elsewhere, used the same mesh, but painted gray, and laid over black board. I was going for the piercings to be dark below..

As for ball point for lines AND relief, did that with a few small balsa space ships I built up. The gray one was 'meh', but the red one was impressive.

Technique can vary greatly in effect, but worthy to keep in mind.

Your work does put my simple, small board to shame, but I'm not complaining. Build on!

Doug

I know about the screen for windows and have already used it on my Queens base. It works well especially when you dry brush it with a light grey, take a look at her.

I was talking about this type of steel grating.

Tutorial (part 3)

Here is the jig I use to glue the corridor ledges. First with a few daps of superglue to hold the piece in place, then with pva underneath, applied here with a bamboo skewer to reach in the difficult spots. Jigs are immensely useful, ensure consistency, and are like a third hand.

I glue a piece of scrap craft stick under each corridor ledge. The wide craft stick used is thin and flexible and adding this makes them really strong. I hold them in place using my third, fourth and fifth hands while it dries.

Oops forgot to upload the picture of the completed piece prior to painting...will add later.

More tiles.

Here is my back log of tiles to make. These are "nice to have" tiles so there is no rush to complete them. I will finish off the tiles I have primed already with the possible exception of the 10x10 office complex tile. I also have a stack of pre-cut tile blanks in case I need something specific (seen at the top).

Here are the narrow corridor tiles in progress. The walls are deliberately low for ease of access and to allow minis to fit. Still debating some of the embellishments for these. The blank areas outside the corridors themselves will be duct works, machinery and such. I will have a few drop-in scenery pieces that will fit there.

Some of the tiles will have drop-ins that change the type of tile. In this case a X section tile to an L corner tile or a door frame insert. More variability without making extra tiles.

Never been Keanu'd before. Thanks.

Here are the first finished sections. Just awaiting a bottle of wash to arrive for the final grimy touch. Still need to make two door inserts. The room is washed out in the photo. My lousy photography. Just a plain white room.

Had a bit of a mishap priming the next sections. Used an old spraycan without testing. DOH! Instead of drying completely in an hour, it's taking forever to eliminate the sticky to the touch feeling. I will give it all week to fully dry. Luckily we are having a hot and dry spell. Working on some pulp scenery in the meantime.

Cheers.

Another 7 modules completed.

Corridor end with a small room.

Straight corridor.

Elevator.

Corridor with a side room entrance.

Corner corridor (with optional stairway going up)

Special adapter piece. This is the entrance to Ops and is needed to link the new tile system to the old ops module I previously made. Tile size is 5x7 inches vs the regular 5x5 tile size.

Another special adapter corridor tile to link to the Medical module I previously made. The door entrance has to be off center so I created a pop-in cap to close the entrance and change it into a regular T-section so I can use.

Another 5 tiles to go, door inserts, a bit of cosmetic work on the Ops/Medlab and the medical section modules, and all the 2nd level tiles for the South module will be complete.

Cheers.

They look great. Epic task you've set yourself, but you're making good progress.

Re the paint, I think it needs weathering, some oil washes and weathering powders would give it that lived in feel that it seems to be missing at the moment.

Fantastic project though.

Man I wish I lived closer to you so I could get in a game with you and your system.
Really looking great with the paint. Is it hard for the paint to cover the materials you are using?
We need an overhead shot of everything you have put together some day. That would put the amount of work you have done in perspective. Awsome.

Thanks all.
@Hubbabubba. Definitely needs to be grimey/lived in. Will be giving a wash but I'm still awaiting my order in the mail. Should just make some but paid for already. Been reading about weathering powders recently and am considering getting those also. Recommendations? Will also add a few pieces of equipment, trash, loose papers but awaiting closer to the end to do so when I can see things overall.

@miniman. Always welcome for a game should we get the chance. As for painting the materials I use (hardboard, cereal card, craft sticks, bamboo skewers, etc)  it's actually no problem. My trick is I prime everything with a coat of spray primer - I mostly use Krylon Fusion. That seals the wood and avoids those supposed issues with the gallons of paint needed and soaking into the wood. Two coats is usually all that is needed. I mostly use Liquitex student paints as they are fairly thick and somewhat smooth out any wood grain, as well as ordinary craft paints. The only problem were pieces I had primed black ( ran out of white) which I decided to paint white - those took quite a few coats to cover.  Will get an overview shot once the basement is cleaned up a bit - there's no room at the moment.

Cheers

@Michka Didn't see your question earlier. The exterior bits are still WIP. I take down a piece now and then to work on it but concentrating on the interior at the moment and rethinking how this will fit with the outside of the colony. Thinking on sourcing some vehicles soon, or building some.

@Naitsirk. Thanks. Been following your blog too(Thank you Google translate) and it is quite impressive...beautiful graphics and game play looks fun.

Still adding pieces slowly but steadily. Been working on other projects also to avoid burnout.  Two new rooms. Most rooms will be "clean" vs the grungy corridors but some plug in scenery will have wrecked/dirty rooms.

An end corridor room, a two door room, and a locker module. The decor modules will fit most rooms so I can switch room function around to maximize play options.

I cannot wait to see more about this..

I have a question though.

The way you build the hallways, like in the movies where they are slanted inwards. From inside, it looks awesome, but from above and the side, it can somewhat to me, look really weird.

How does it feel to you, when you are looking at playing in the hallways?

HI all, still doing work on this as fancy takes me between multiple ongoing projects. Will try to post something soon.  As you may or may not know most of my stuff  was packed away during the winter. :(

@duckforceone: it does look different not much different than other modular layouts with walls and open areas between tiles.  The minis stay on the central corridor section and IIRC the walls are only 1.75inches high (I'm on a train at the moment) so you can see inside fairly well. There is purpose to the madness of having the slanting walls as that is where the ventilation ducts are slated to be and dropped in as needed.

Cheers

Been doing a bunch of little things plugging away at this project amongst other projects but nothing exciting enough to post then a few nights of insomnia...

My two not M577, not m522(Ebbles), not Caiman(Khurasan) inspired APCs are starting to take shape.

And a prototype for a Raptor inspired shuttle.

And a few rooms too; a long one and a square office complex.

Notice the nail heads placed in the floor strategically. This will allow me to place furniture items with rare earth magnets in the base and not have them move around too much (that's the theory but has not been tested with rigours of game play yet). Retrofitted all my existing rooms with them.

And the start of some drop in modules and as the rooms are standardized will fit in most rooms. Depending on orientation they can make smaller rooms within larger ones. A trauma bay, diagnostics lab, office, and service counter to start off with.

Cheers

A quick jig to locate the holes for the axle.

The steps used to make the doors and as I only need 4 no need for casting; just assembly line work:

A pod bay for my Tachikomas (or cargo, or tech bay). Not really part of the colony but as I am making this versatile and I really wanted one...

And a service counter drop-in, for the survey office.

Those drop in interiors are a great idea! Consider it appropriated/stolen/nicked/nabbed/borrowed, etc.
