Title: Painted Reaper Kickstarter Bones on my Blog: Updated 11.4.13
Post by: CPalmer on July 02, 2013, 03:17:19 PM
I thought I would start a new blog to chronicle my efforts painting all my 264 Reaper Bones Kickstarter figures, and that doing so would help keep me on task with my painting.  I also hope it would provide incentive for others to work on their Bones Kickstarter figures as well. I had big dreams that I would paint one a day, and post them here; so in a little less than a year I would have the entire set done.  And then reality set in.  To do a lot of these figures justice takes more than a one day paint job; and basing, flocking, varnishing, and matte coating are all steps that slow down the final results.  So, I have changed my goals to a more realistic one or two figures a week.
So far I have two written up and posted.

The Mr Bones figure:

and the Giant Earth Elemental:

Looking very nice indeed!

That must be a daunting pile of plastic to try and tackle....good on you for taking it on!

How do you find the surface to paint on?  Did you find it necessary to prime?

Cheers,

Blue

Thanks! Yes, it's very daunting!  One of the reasons I'm trying to be deliberate about it and doing the blog.

No, no priming necessary according to Reaper.  Neither of the figures above were primed.  The first one wasn't even washed, just stright from its packaging. The Earth Elemental I washed because I worried about the glue, not the paint. Though, with the figure I'm doing now (also unwashed and unprimed) I'm having some surface tension problems with the paint, so I may start washing as a matter of course with the rest of them.

Looks good. I knew I should have gotten the earth elemental!

All these folks with their huge # of bones to paint makes me kind of glad that I split the Bones KS with 3 other guys.  Of course with add-ons, I'll still have about 80 KS figs to paint...

That Earth Elemental is cool and Mr. Bones came out nicely as well. It's nice not having to prime them isn't it.  I had to soak mine overnight as if I didn't, the first coat didn't go on smoothly. After washing, it was perfect. Are you going to do any conversions with yours? It looks to be dead easy to do, but I don't want to be the first to try!

Glad you like them.  I don't have any big conversions planned, though I have trimmed the odd bit of decoration off on a couple. You're right though, it would be very easy with this material.  Maybe I should consider it more.

Excellent stuff!

It's also nice to see the giant box filled with a sea of unpainted lead... er... I mean silicone.... :)

I passed on the bones ks. I have been seeing a few painted efforts popping up over the last few days.

Nice job on your first 3. I will be sure to follow here for more updates.

Juliette looks like a prime candidate for a pistol hand for a post apoc or steampunk setting.

Sorry to hear about the casting flaws though.

Thanks for the encouraging words :).

Yes, if I had thought about it, and noticed the flaws before I started painting, a hand swap would have been an easy fix.

Very nice painting.
I look forward to following your progress as it is very inspirational.

I got our vampire set in last week and will be using them to teach my daughters how to paint.
For starters we painted the 12 giant rats step by step.

Thanks

She looks good and I really like your choice on the colour of her dress. I've seen a few posts regarding miscasts in the are of noses, chins and fingers. But they are fun to paint. I'm on my third one and am loving it.

Oh very nice stuff so far. I'm still waiting for mine, but I'll definitely be watching this. They paint up very nicely from what I can see of your work!

Love the blog idea, I hope to be inspired enough by your progress to paint my own bones.  Right now I have them all out on a table staring at me, and I can't even figure out where to start.

You've done a great job painting these!

Haha why not play painter's lottery? Dump them all in a box or bag and just pick one out randomly. I'm thinking that might be how I do it.

You've made a SPLENDID start...the Bat Swarm is particularly nice. Just don't get intimidated by THE VAST PILE of minis to be painted; keep up the FINE WORK & enjoy the process!

Thanks for the continued support, everyone.
Yes, its hard to know where to start. I'm starting with grabbing randomly from a bag that I put the original 30 Bones that were offered into.

I really enjoy your project, CPalmer! I'm still waiting for my order to be dispatched :( but then again, I already have thousands of unpainted miniatures so I'm not really in a rush. =)

Looking great so far! I'm really glad to hear these first-person accounts of no-prime painting for Bones. I'm looking forward to picking up a few loose figures to play around with.

I like the conversion of the Dragon Head Staff into a Fish Staff...The Fish looks like a Gar with a SERIOUS attitude problem. The Sea Sorcerer persona comes across nicely through your color choices & base...love that sea shell. Your FINE brushwork brings out his salt encrusted personality. GREAT WORK!

Thank you

Very well painted. Are these reaper bones figures for kickstarter backers only or will they sell them on their website sometime to us ordinary mortals?

The Bones figures from the Kickstarter will be available to the general public from Reaper as soon as they've mailed out the pre-purchases to all the Kickstarter participants.
In the meantime, there is a small selection of non-Kickstarter Bones available in their online store:

I really like the orc.  A sort of "realistic but greenish" skin color is my favorite for orcs.  I like the way you went with Medusa, also.

I just painted the first figure from my big box o' Bones (Bonnie the futuristic heroine).  Although that wasn't completely satisfactory, this thread is getting my enthusiasm back up.

Looking good as always there Chris.
The Treeman/Ent i would have thought to be a MageKnight mini if it wasn't in the Bones thread.
You been slacking here because you been getting ready for Fall In i take it? What do you and the HAWK's have planned this time around?

Say what? I cant think i have ever seen you miss one of the HMGS cons since i been going. And i been going for a lot of years.
And not a single response on the Fall In 2013 topic i started. Seems others aren't going either. Shame peeps are missing out for whatever reason. They are my little mini needed vacations from work. They are a must.
