Title: Babe in Outer Space!! W.I.P.
Post by: OLeary on July 05, 2013, 04:35:08 PM
I'm working on this Space Babe from Reaper and would like to solicit critiques so I can improve her as I go. She's going to end up being put on a scenic base with a little demon familiar.

I've done nothing more with the skin than put down a base coat of Reaper Rosy Skin Shadow. I want to avoid using any kind of Face Wash on her as it tends to make a female face look "harsh" The hair has been base coated as well. I plan on bringing the highlights up using a grey/lilac mixture and end up with lilac on the highest points. I'm doing this to tie the hair in with the outfit.

Thus far I have used no washes on the figure. I also do not like to drybrush if I can help it. I've layered the colour up using a wet brush and feathering slowly from dark to light. I've only done five layers so I think there is plenty of room to go higher on my highlights or to deepen my shadows.

Any input is welcome.

This is so out of my league I will just sit back and listen to the masters of the brush speak.

Gracias,

Love the color scheme!

For some reason I'm always attracted to these sort of vintage-pulpy-space sort of things. Honestly I'd like to see some minis based on Wally Wood's comics from the 50's.

Even at the W.I.P. stage, the Space Chick has a lot of OH-SO-COOL potential. The Girl is VERY Retro; when I was a boy, I had a toy Buck Rogers Gun that look very similar to the one she's waving about...it, in turn, resembled my Dad's power drill.
All that aside, your color choices are TERRIFIC. I look forward to the updates.

Thank you Ben!

It took me a minute to get the reference to the movie. "That'll do pig, that'll do"

She's a competition piece for a Pulp Challenge and that's why I chose the colours. I love that period of American History. All those Pulp Mag's and the style was so cool. I like the Noir stuff from that period as well. If only I could paint greyscale I'd tackle one of those.

I wish they made a whole unit of these, but she's the only one. She's perfectly Retro and that's why I chose her for the competition. I won't win, but I'll have fun.

How are your Faeries coming? I really want to see those get posted and set into you Spooky Woods. I'm back to blogging finally and when I post your Mushrooms, I'll PM you a link to the post. My people are going to dig those things!

Is that a Bones figure? Or is that the original metal?

This is in fantasy?

Where should it go?

Is that a Bones figure? Or is that the original metal?

She's a metal mini and at the moment she's not being cast as a BONES.

Space Babe in Outer Space with Raygun? Hmmm...

You mean pulp? You have to understand that you're dealing with a blonde here and thinking isn't exactly one of our best assets :D :D

Should she be moved by the moderator or should I post her over in Pulp myself?  I don't mind if she's moved as she might enjoy the trip through interspace :D :D

I know what you mean. I usually use a technique called "wetbrush" to paint female faces or any skin at that. It's basically a drybrush, only I dip the brush against the inside my lower lip to remoisturize the brush without actually making it really wet. The result is a smoother finish than actual drybrushing. I then pick out details but try to keep the highlights a little lower, thus less harsh.

 lol
So was I!
Pigs in Spaaaace.....

Anyway, enough of that nonsense, this is showing some great potential, will be keeping an eye on this for sure as I too love Retro-Pulp-Scifi whatevers.
Love the colour choices so far, but your mention of greyscale is interesting as I have always fancied attempting a Flash Gordon project in B+W to emulate the old Buster Crabbe series.

One for the future, methinks..... ::)

Colour choice is great, as Mason said.

I f I were painting this lady, I would push the contrast a little more, which means lighter highlights and deeper shadows. Simply take one of the pictures you made and, using some sort of photo software, manipulate it accordingly and you will see what I mean.

The highlights are well placed, you see, I just think the could be a bit harsher overall.

Thatīs quite a beaut, Anne. She already looks really nice.
Iīd expose the rack a bit more by highlighting her breasts. Thatīs what I always do at least. A bit like what you did with her butt. Noses, boobs and shoulders are always the brightest highlighted parts of my miniatures and when it comes to females itīs always some distinct parts that attract the view to make them identify as being female...(you know what I mean...)
