Along with the many, many other projects I've got I've decided to start one that has been long on the backburner, an Akira style skirmish.
Rules as of yet haven't even been considered (quite possibly a variation of Sharp Practice or some such) but of course the terrain is taking a front seat :)
Figures will be from various ranges and will 'fit' my take on the whole thing.
To start with I'm going to set it in Japan and therefore all the buildings will have the look of modern Japan and there will also be some futuristic elements but at a later date.
First off I've cut out and very quickly assembled a simple block of flats that I drew whilst on holiday. Forgive the quality for the time being as they are only just thrown together and given a very light coat of primer with no details added.
They are modular and there will be a shop on the bottom floor. I also have plans for all the little accoutrements that go on the roofs, billboards, signs etc. all in Japanese and some of them lit :)

Lots to do yet including a possible modular raised roadway (anyone been to Japan will know what I'm on about :) ).
cheers

Really looking forward to seeing this progress
(Did the wizards tower ever get finished? That was a brilliant looking build)
-
Looks like a great start, Bibbly! :)
I also envy your ability to cut straight >:(
-
What a cool idea for a project. I didn't like the movie that much and never read the manga, but the art style was nice. Somehow I tend to think of glowing blue neon lights and red motorcycles when Akira is mentioned :)
Speaking of motorcycles, one scenario could be a race between the Akira gang versus the Clowns in downtown Tokyo, on motorcycles of course! :)
Also, the military should play a role, maybe the opposing player has to stop them from using their superweapon.
The mutations could bring some flavor to the game if certain characters develop special skills like psychic attacks.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Questions in order...
*The wizards tower is sitting on my desk in a vain attempt to get itself noticed and finished ;D
*A laser dear boy, a laser ;)
*I have bikes and was looking at the Dreamforge 'Storm troopers' for the military types (possibly), all the other ideas have been considered :)
cheers
James

Yet another cool project by you James, will follow this one keenly.
If you haven't yet read manga called 'Domu', do check it out. I thought about it immediately when I saw your building.
-
Lots to do yet including a possible modular raised roadway
Yes please :)
-
Damn Bibbly. I might have to buy your services and pay for you to cut stuff for me lol I'm four cuts from a brain hernia...
-
Best project ever.
Clowns on bikes though.
Clowns on bikes.
-
I had a suspicion you might be going down this path, what with the odd oblique comment here, and the figure I sent you, looking forward to seeing this progress.
The building looks wonderful, are you planning to have these available through Oshiro.

If you sent him the mini, Simon. Will you also send him the new massive Cupboard he'll need to store it? ;)
-
You are a machine... maybe even the ghost in the machine...
-
Thanks chaps, I'll hopefully get one detailed up with a decent coat of primer this evening that'll show it a lot better than the previous photos :)
cheers

*I have bikes and was looking at the Defiance Games 'Storm troopers' for the military types (possibly), all the other ideas have been considered :)
Did you look at the old VOID (now produced by Grendel I think) and newer Urban War ranges? There's a Japanese feel to a lot of the factions (and I don't just mean the Triads) and there are some bikes too.
That building looks awesome already.
-
What's the material used for the building ?
The translucency of the stuff made me curious about it.
-
Great start James ....
..... Didn't take long to fire up the laser on your return from hols!
-
Well I'm filled with envy now. I just spent four hours attempting to build a simple building last night and the results were not good. And here comes Jimbibbly. That's a beautiful building already. I'm sure paint can only improve it. I'm currently working on cyberpunk terrain and might just "borrow" your design if I may. How big a board are you thinking? Are you thinking mostly building or will there be a serious expanse of street involved?
-
Wow, so many replies :) Thanks chaps.
The building is lasered, layered acrylic and has a very thin coat of spray primer hence the slight translucency.
I've got one of the void bikes but not overly keen on the figures, I'll be going mainly for Copplestone with a bit of Hasslefree, Infinity and Dreamforge thrown in.
Probably going to go for a 4x4 but we'll see how much terrain that needs as Japan is rather busy and full urban wise.
An idea for just the raised road and the bikes might not be a bad thing :)
cheers
James

Thanks, I had just figured that out when I reread your post and noticed the part about the primer.
-
Love your idea of a "busy" 4x4 table, Jim :)
Have you planned the playabilty? I imagine that the aversge wargamer with their general girth might do chaos with your terrain :(
-
So, this is the 'Top Secret' project is it...?
:D
Stunning start, mate.
Love the flats, great for a few settings, methinks.
:-*
Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Not sure what you mean with the roads, but could you make something that would work for MC-1 too.
That would certainly please all the Dredd-heads out there.
;)
-
As usual love your projects and this is wow :o :-* Even just lightly primered looks great. Love the style of the flats, they definitely remind me of Japan. Will be copying but without a laser :'(
Will be following this thread closely.
-
Brilliant stuff!
-
Thanks chaps :)
The raised roadway should do for both and other themes as well.
If you've seen any pictures of Japan you'll know how crowded the buildings are, I will be trying to achieve this and b*****ks to the players lol
Quickly painted one of the floors tonight and did a bit of weathering. It's only rushed to get a feel and to help point out the errors that need correcting (several :? ). Unfortunately I ran out of the spray but hopefully Modelzone will still be open tomorrow and I can get some more...

Undecided about the interiors as of yet, I might just go for some simple wallpaper. We'll see :)
I'll see about painting some of my ill gotten gains at the weekend :D
cheers
James
-
The Building is looking great so far :-*, I will either be copying some of the design features, or purchasing Lots of floors from you for my Shadowrun project, that is if I don't get distracted and start something new, leading me to sell of huge bundle of lead at a loss, I seem to be good at that ;D
-
That looks great, James. First thing that jumped to mind for me was the "prison" apartment in Old Boy for some reason.... Test D6 to eat live squid!
-
That looks bloody brilliant, mate.
:-*
Time to confess, though, I reckon.
Is this really a Japanese Dolls House that you found on your hols?
Tell the truth now.
:D
-
Interior without furniture and details? Blasphemy!
Love the colour of the tiles! Perfect "cheapish" look if you ask me :-* The only minor issue is that the colour reminds me of the publict toilet tiles, and now I need to wee...
-
Thanks chaps :)
Travelling round Japan so many times these things seem to leave an imprint. They are all ever so slightly different shapes, styles colours etc that there's plenty of opportunity to have a totally unique board with no repeats :)
Painted the whole block now, but needs more weathering and oh so many bits, bobs and whatchamacallits. Still deciding on the best sort of interior though :?

Will be working on the shop floor at the weekend but so many designs to choose from its difficult to get something that looks generic. I'll probably go for one of the 'combini' stores that are everywhere.
As to the raised roadway, this piccy might give a better idea (pinched off the net). It also gives a good idea on how busy the roof tops can be :o

Dont encourage him to go chucking ALL of his old junk in to fill it up.
I reckon he will try and slip that little wizards tower effort in here somewhere and pass it off as some kind of ancient Japanese thingy.
;)
And I still reckon that 'block of flats' is a Dolls House that he found on holiday.
;D

Lookin good already.
I am so gonna keep a close eye on this thread

Bibbly, as stated before, I just love the colours! :) Some neon light on that and shazaam, we got ourselves a Salute 2014 winner :)

Never thought about Salute but it's certainly a possibility, the only problem is that they need to know months in advance and I've got about three-four ideas for table for next year :?

Rats,as I'm on the thin side of things (69 kilos) I could safely play on Jim's board... lol Too far though.
Lovely work Jim :-* Really looking forward to the figures, are you going to go for the noir look or a bit brighter?
-

Lovely work Jim :-* Really looking forward to the figures, are you going to go for the noir look or a bit brighter?
Brighter than noir, I'll have to see when it comes to painting them though and what takes may fancy but I do want them to look a bit like they've come from manga/anime etc
cheers
James
-
How about noir with neon interludes?!
Grey and somber then flashes of bright and vibrant yellows, greens, blues and pinks
-
Could be an idea although to be fair I have very few figures to try it on at the moment.
Other news, I got the bottom floor cut out tonight and will assemble and prime tomorrow so the whole block wil be complete apart from the details :D
I must admit, this is getting quite exciting ;D
cheers
James
-
Salute 2014 it is then! :D

Here as directed. ::)
Oh my Lordy, no wonder you weren't keen to get involved in anything else. You kept this one quiet. :o
Looks great so far, though it bloody well should and we would expect nothing less. ;D :-*
Now get on and finish the Ludus, Nottingham castle, the Martian canals, viaduct etc and...... ;) lol

Blah blah blah, go and drop some figures ;D
Got the ground floor shop done today and now it'll all go,in the cupboard until some undetermined time in the future lol

The shop front is generic (no ip infringement etc) and looks suitably Japanese (I hope). All the windows are in and I'm toying with the idea of lighting the shop with strip LEDs when it has some shelves in.
Still lots of details to put in but I suppose it's actually playable in it's current state :?
cheers
James

Great, happy to play when you are, wait a minute what figures have you got ready? lol

Three bikes (soon to be four), a roboty suit thing and one or two gang style figures lol
Working on the rest though :D

Looking forward to hearing more on Tuesday.

Nice work! :-*
So.....what's bigger, the Japanese tower block or the wizards tower? ;)
I hate to be the one to point this out, how do your tower block residents get up to their flats? Are you planning on stairs or even a doorway leading to stairs inside?

Wizards tower by about a foot lol
These types of flats generally have a stair core at the rear or side and a tiny lift on the inside. As the interior is yet to be finalised there is still room for this. The stair core is being worked on slowly as I'm trying to get it right and easy to make (practical for sales) and if you have a look at the picture of Tokyo above you should be able to see the zigzag stair core.
I'll get there :)
cheers

It's bringing back good memories of my first day on of my first visit to Tokyo (Akasaka). Everything looks like a city, but feels different.
-
That looks great, especially as I've just got home from watching the source material on the big screen :o :D
Really evocative. Is there any place you can squeeze in the remedial school or a basement dive bar? ;)
-
Top notch work! :-* The style really captures the feel of urban Japan.
Chris
-
Outstanding, even for your standards, Biburi-San. I shudder to think how marvellous the full table will look.
I'm still pondering how to do a 1970s university campus properly, and those tiles are a beautiful touch which livens up the large surfaces tremendously.
-
Very nice. So tall! Any link to this wizard tower? If its bigger by a foot I must see it!
-
If you look out your window towards Bibbly's house you probably can! ;) It'll be the thing that blocks ALL the light from the Sun!! :D

Lovely work as usual mate :-*

Getting stock ready for next weeks show and I'll have an announcement tomorrow about costs etc but I thought I'd show a little progress on the demo version in the form of lighting for the shop. I intend to do the whole flat but we'll see.
24v strip LEDs from work hooked up to eight 1.5v batteries (it's what I had at the time).
The soldering on these is rather easy and quite an enjoyable job (I do most of the lighting on projects at work which has held me in good stead for this).
The shiny stuff is just a simple silicon substance to hep protect the LEDs.

And now insitu with a 40k RT guardsman for reference as I haven't quite finished any of the figures I have for the project ::)
At first I thought it would be too bright but it doesn't look to bad in place.

There is a bit of glow through the walls which I can solve with a light blocking material we have at work.
Still pondering to have shelves etc made and cast up, I'm sure there will be a market for it though :)
cheers
James

Bloody brilliant, mate!
8) 8)
What is almost as amazing is the fact that you have bloody well painted one of those Guardsmen as well.
How many projects...?
lol

that white and tremendously intense light.... that's sooo japanese! :)
-
Now that's cool! Could you not use the spill off of light to illuminate the shop sign? Maybe leave the back of the wall behind it unpainted?
-
Thanks chaps :)

That's not a bad idea actually, I can remove the primer coat at the back and have the lightblock material surround the sign 8) Genius mate :)

Brilliant James! Hadn't had a look in this thread for a while, the whole building is just amazing. Keen to see how the staircase will look.
-
Don't know how you do it James, really don't know. o_o
So many projects and ALL top notch. :)
-
Many thanks chaps :)
The stairs are being CADed over the coming weeks (got a lot to draw at the mo). I've also made a small start on the aircon units but will have to start again as I'm not completely happy with the result.
Don't know how you do it James, really don't know. o_o
You might have noticed that none of them are complete... lol

But my, it looks amazing! :-*

Stunning work.

Perfect building for Urban War or 2HW New Beginnings. :-*
-
:o There is more Bibbly awesomeness?
I want to take the blue pill!!! What else do you have and how deep does this rabbit hole go???
That lighting is a beauty James. I wasnt too concerned with the light coming through, it looked a little like underlighting/spot lighting of the facade. So if you 'protect' some areas from light leak, it will give a nice 'well lit' effect.
Cheers
Matt

Being in Japan has given me some new impetus to carry on with this. Although the flats are just about ready to be put in the catalogue (just building up a bit of stock first) I thought a need for some street furniture, in the form of a power line and some pavements.
The pavements need some extra work on them and I'm as of yet undecided which route to follow.
The power line I'm happy with and I think I'm going to make a castable version as making many of these makes me shudder lol
For the demo board they will have cables strung between them and they will be based on clear bases.

The aircon units have had to be done again as I wasn't happy with them and I've got an idea for some modular ducting but more on that when it's done :)
cheers

Somehow I've never seen this thread before but 'wow', that's a slick bit of kit.

I had it as a special collector item VHS back in the day, in 1995 or so, I wonder if it is still somewhere at my folks' place...

The street furniture looks amazing, and I love that apartment building. I'd love to add that to one of my city blocks. The Akira disc is in constant rotation while I work on my own Blade Runner project.
Are you really going to string the power lines across the streets for your demo game? You are a mad man.

Thanks chaps :)

An application of 'silly string' (other aerosol based applicators are available) would seem to do the job. That's some piece of wiring!
-
I say you step the game up a bit...plug the wires into a car battery under the table. Play for keeps. :` lol
-
That's not a bad idea lol
Or maybe it is >:D
I picked up some fantastic micro LEDs from Japan that are just crying out to be included on the board 8)
Vending machines, street lights (that are generally of the blue hue in Japan), shop fridges, bill boards, the list is almost endless :D
cheers

Pavements and lamppost are ace.

Does the yellow line on the pavements serve a purpose or is it purely decorative?

In any photos I've seen the surfaces look like they are tactile, so they may well be similar to our corduroy and blister paving, but with an extended use? I like guessing games :D
James will now come along and tell us they mean something totally different!
-
They are for blind people, the linear bits are for walking and the spotty bits are for stopping at crossings etc. so yes, the same principle as over here :)
cheers
James

Got some aircon units and more shop names done. Only undercoated for the moment as the weather is a bit naff.
Gonna do a big roof top unit and maybe another wall unit of a different type and then cast the whole batch :)
The top one says 'COMBINI' which is the rather cute Japanese way of saying convenience store (or corner shop in British English ;) ).
I'm going to cut the letters out for the 1-STOP 1-SHOP sign but would people prefer them to be pre stuck or left off for ease of painting?
cheers
James
-
I would prefer left off myself
-
I'm looking forward to the Pachinko Parlour...
-
Started on the second block although there's not much to see at the moment. I will be in work tomorrow and will hopefully start on a different frontage and possible tile arrangement.
I'll also be cutting out a parking tower (for those who don't know what I'm on about you'll see tomorrow :) ).
The shop insides have been started but it's just a pile of bits for now that might get assembled tomorrow as well.
Very dark picture, apologies for that, shit weather at the moment. I'm also doing a comms tower that will fit on a roof top and hopefully a preview of that tomorrow as well.
I'm looking forward to the Pachinko Parlour...
That's an idea :)
cheers
James
-
Oh me like! :-* :-*
-
parking tower! that will be something to see... and a bugger to make, lots of girders.
we got asked to leave a Pachinko Parlour because we were taking photos while we played.
-
Son of a bitch that's fantastic. See, this is what I want. Buildings so crowded together that the claustrophobia is contagious. I'm jealous as hell right now.
-
Blimey, mate, you are like a machine at the moment.
Keeping up with all your activities and projects is becoming a project in itself.
o_o
This board is going to look great, as the simple addition of plonking another building next to the first really shows what it should end up looking like.
Great stuff!
:-* 8) :D
-
Thanks chaps :)
It does do that Paul which is why I wanted to post the piccy :)
The parking tower is unfortunately one of the clad ones as I didn't fancy making the exposed ones lol
cheers
James

Another superb thread, and I've actually found it before the page numbers got into double figures. Like the tiling on the buildings, very smart.
-

that's how the short cuts start...
-
Wow! Makes me want to start my own project i've been thinking about so long....
-
Wow! :-* This stuff is looking amazing! I really like the look of the clear acrylic (I'm assuming) work.

lol

Looking great James! Now, you need dozen more of them or so for 3' x 3' table :)
-
Thanks for the replies chaps :)
Got the parking tower done sans weathering and base coated the other block of flats. It sounds daft but I'm really pleased with the way this is going :)

Still lots of details to do like the carpark signs and canopy (the canopy will have lights in it) and interiors etc but it looks like it'll be moving along for the foreseeable future :)
Also got some comm units to go on the comms tower (red and white one) but haven't fully decided on the design yet :? it also needs a fair amount of work to get it into kit form as at the moment it's just quickly cut out and stuck together for these photos.
The parking tower will be a kit as well and parts of that need finalising as well...
So much to do lol
cheers
James

:o :o :o :o :o

Wow! No wonder you are liking the way things are heading James, this does indeed get better and better! :-*

Bloody hell fire!!!! :o :o :o

Many thanks chaps :)
Just about done weathering the parking tower and hopefully will post it tonight with the decent camera :)

Not one for doing by halves...?
We all know the answer to that, but this, mate, is outstanding.
It really is the dogs danglies.

Looks amazing!
-
That looks amazing. Do you have any pictures of actual Japanese car parks? See, that thing looks weird as hell to me. Cool as hell but weird. How big would a car be sitting out front?
I love the colors you chose for the buildings. After watching Akira for the hundredth time time yesterday I was surprised at how bright the buildings were. You never notice these things till it's something you're painting.

Go to youtube and put 'japanese parking tower'... ;)
I just did and was pretty amazed, as I had not seen any before.
It seems that there are several different types.

OMG!! Think my head just exploaded. Fantastic stuff. Might have to watch Akira tomorrow

Great stuff Jim :-* :-* :-*
Don't even know what Akira is?

-
Wow, this project is going beyond insane in levels of awesomeness! :-*
-
top stuff... very envious of folks with lasers and things...
-
Funny thing, I was over in Docklands (East India) yesterday and there's blocks of flats there that instantly reminded me of these buildings. I don't think Akira ever went to Budgens for line pickle though. :?
-
Love it mate!
What strikes me is a thought that you should have something like Tokyos Piss Alley (or Memory Lane as the officials wish to call it) either between the modern houses, or on the opposite side to add some contrast :)
-
Thanks chaps :)

Wow, not only am I impressed by the buildings, but that other people know about Piss Alley. lol
Chris

Piss Alley would be great, but as James said some compromises would have to be made for gaming. Nobody would get their hand in for a start!

Unless the figures were mounted on magnets and there was sort sort of magnetic pulley system underneath that could be accessed from the side...
:D

Genius, James, pure genius. Maybe shift down a gear - I hear insanity is just around the corner. ;)

Cannot have that! Well, not before I got the funds and designs to commission the lower 6 stories of Dan Tanna Block! lol

Got two small update on this, a figure and the start of a basement bar.
First the figure. Copplestone futures wars with a fairly standard paint job. Got a few more that'll do over the next few weeks. The base is 120grit sandpaper and the figure has had his tab snipped off and he has been pinned in place.

The second thing is the basement bar. Someone mentioned it earlier in thread and now I've made a very basic start. The baseboards for the whole thing will be utilising the underneath of my Mars boards and there is 53mm to play with which is enough for a decent room height.
Fortunately the tile sheet used is pretty much spot on with the building perimeter above as the idea will be to have 'holes' in the baseboard that the buildings cover.
A simple bar and fridge with some stairs and walls are all I've got for now but the fridge will be cast up to go with the other additions I have planned for release in the new year.
Please excuse the ever dodgy photos :?

I can't really work on the baseboard itself for a month or so but I'll carry on with the base, ent bar intermittently :)

looks like assembled from lasercut pieces. you can see also the glue spread on a side.

The fridge is scratch built. It would take far too long to rp things like this and it's much more fun to build them properly ;D
Thinking on bar furniture but a bit stuck. I'm sure it'll come to me soon enough :)

Cool, thanks.

James, you need stools, neons, maybe a table or two and shelves (with bottles) behind the bar.
-
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ac/Thumbtack.jpg)
Flip, lose the pin and there's your stools sorted.
-
Jesus, I think I just had a little mental squeel... and I'm not even doing a near future project at the moment.
I blame the size of that pic.

Sorry, posting from phone...no conception of how big it looks on a monitor! :o

or golf-tees, upside down, glued onto a penny. ;-)

Should've mention the fact I know what sort of furniture but it's the style I'm not sure of :)

If you can find wooden ones, and have a soft sanding-sheet (the foam-backed thin ones) - you can bend the foam-sanding-sheet over to forum a U-shape, then sand-down the front-edge of the "cup" - it makes a perfect bar-stool... works with plastic ones also, just needs a bit more sanding... once painted most folks dont recognises its golf-tee
-

I was thinking you weren't that dim-witted... but only for a second. Done a Google-image search?

I was thinking you weren't that dim-witted... but only for a second. Done a Google-image search?
lol No google search as of yet. We've done a fair bit of work for Bentely over the past couple of years (showrooms and the like) and there's lot of different furniture they've gone though. The trouble is, most of it doesn't lend itself to casting (etched and then made from several components).

Yes, I though about changing the shape somehow but they will be a bit to 60s/70s for the feel I want :)
Thanks for the ideas chaps and don't worry, it'll come to me :)

Excellent James! The amount of stuff you pull out of your hat astounds me!! o_o o_o
One thing that might of worked, I take it the bar counter is hollow and the front of it made of layers of laser cut PVC? A nice futuristic style could have been achieved if the front was clear PVC instead? The front facing stepped parts could have been covered with opaque material then a couple of LEDs with a battery inside would give a great downlight effect!
I don't know if I've managed to explain my idea properly!! :( This is the best example I can find to try and illustrate what I mean.
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/6E59747D-7355-4412-968B-B211D1F516DF_zpsg1ucghie.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/6E59747D-7355-4412-968B-B211D1F516DF_zpsg1ucghie.jpg.html)
-
I know what you mean mate :)
The bar is made from clapboard styrene as I don't have laser access at the moment but in the past we've made a small scale glacial ravine hat was lit from underneath (don't ask why) and that was made from layered acrylic with random profiles to give an almost glittering effect.
For this bar I'm going to keep it fairly seedy but I do fancy doing a more top market one one with etched furniture, specific downlighting, mirrors etc :)
cheers

Lovely mate! :-* So this basement will be reached by the stairs? Are we talking a reachable sewers system as well? ;D

This project looks great. Cant wait to see it finished. Are you going to have a bike like the main characters bike?

Possibly, need some (offsite) research into it though.

How is this project coming along Jim?
Are the building kits going to be available soon. I would love to see more. :-* :-*

Very, very slowly lol
It got knocked back due to ill health but now Salute is over I can dig it out again :)
I have got the aircon units on the 'display' model and I'm casting as many as I can and I've also got a second flat design drawn up and ready to go, just need to cut it etc.
Here are the aircon pictures

Well, I have now and I can't say that I'm impressed really.
Some of the city visuals are stunning of course but you don't see enough.
I'm also wary of the proposed live action full film :?
Each to their own of course :)
On another note, I've almost got the second flat design done and will be posting at the weekend :D

Well you've got to see it for what it is, it's not a big studio trying to make a multi million dollar movie, but a bunch of fans having a bit of fun, don't know what the budget was, but from what I can see the indigogo only raised $3500 of a $7500 goal so, they probably had to cut some corners somewhere. For what it is IMHO it's pretty good, of course with a proper budget and good cast and crew it could have been a lot better, but TBH this looks a lot more fun than anything I've heard about the proposed big budget studio version, this at least tried to stay close to the original with the limited means they had.
-
Got some primer on the second block and might put some colour on it later this weekend.
The crab is pure whimsy and was bought from Japan specifically to put on one of the blocks :D It looks a bit more sci-fi than the other ones as well.

Sorry to bother you about them but I would love to get some for my Ghost in the shell project for a con at the end of august.

Looks good, but what's the intended use? As in layout. I want to do a similar thing but with lots of neon etc for a Chinese city. I've been trying to work out how to not make it too cramped to use. Will these be in the centre with the streets around them or have buildings either side with enough space to get arms etc in?
-
Really starting to take shape now. How many buildings do you think the finished board will have?
-
Those look great and really capture the look of urban Japan. That crab reminds me of restaurant sign I've seen in Osaka- too bad you can't rig up the legs to move. :D

To be honest mate, I've no idea, haven't really thought that far ahead ::) lol
Probably going for a two by two to begin with with a flyover and railway on two different levels, sounds small but you can fit a lot of these in that space, the street above is under two foot long.
Really starting to take shape now. How many buildings do you think the finished board will have?
As above, no idea yet but I need a bigger office type building to add variety.
too bad you can't rig up the legs to move. :D
Who says he can't? lol this is Bibbly we're talking about!
It is possible of course, a simple motor with a cam hooked up to a something or other but all the legs are moulded onto the body ;)

For a small skirmish with multiple levels, a 2'x2' can handle quite a bit.

Yup, and of course th other thing being that I really don't have room till we move to a bigger house lol
cheers
James
-
Are you planning on moving anyway? Or do you just need another house in order to have the space to fit all your small houses into?
-
Perfect for mega city one too. Nice and claustrophobic.
-
Got a simple office block drawn up and the first floor cut out but won't be able to put it together until later in the week.
On a side note, we are going to use the skirmish rules we are using for our Martian games (particularly in this thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=66555.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=66555.0) ) and although they aren't quite ready yet it won't be long :)
I've also got some normal figures and a couple of security robots to paint up soon :D

Hasn't His Lordship cleared the Servants Quarters for you yet?
:D
-
I've taken a couple of screen shots (on my phone, not proper ones) of the intended layout and of couse it's bigger than 2x2, it'll be 4x4 ::) lol
This shoud hopefully give you an idea of what I'm planning. The yellow rectangles are the blocks of flats, parking tower and office block, the red and blue are the road layout. In the top right is a clear space for either the railway or the expressway. In the bottom right corner is a river with the road starting to bridge across it.
These are the 3d models I'm making from the 2d laser plans to allow me to visualise and swap and change things before the major base construction and cutting out. There's no bridge/flyover yet as I'm only including things that have gone through the complete design process.

Much to do but I've been snapping away over here like crazy to get as many photos as I can to get the right, busy feel (much to the puzzlement of my in-laws lol ).
Along with buildings I'll be doing clutter in the form of more aircon unit types, road signs, vending machines, power line poles and few other things that fit in.
Also going to be looking at doing several types of civvy vehicle, bikes etc.
cheers

So, you will be the one responsible for the Japanese people thinking all British tourists are camera-mad lunatics, eh?

Looking great!
I can't wait to see it finished.

Oh to have computer skills! That's going to be great mate! Is the plan to make it more populated/busier with buildings?
-
The yellow rectangles beside the 3d buildings denote the positions of additional buildings I believe.
Is that Rhino? I should really get around to playing with that.
-
Is the plan to make it more populated/busier with buildings?
It'll be full to the brim :D One of things I have noticed is that quite often there will be houses from early last century (from the 30's-40's to the 60's-70's) so I'll probably do one of them as well, traditional roofing but with a fair bit of corrugated iron and some wooden walls but with render/pebbledash also. They tend to be really, really dirty as well.
The yellow rectangles beside the 3d buildings denote the positions of additional buildings I believe.
Is that Rhino? I should really get around to playing with that.
You are correct that the yellow is additional buildings but there does need to be another six or seven buildings to on in addition to what's there already.
Rhino is great and very intuitive. There are newish tutorial videos that really help you get to grips with it.
I'm toying with drawing some bikes and trikes in 3d with a view to getting them printed or if not printed at least using the 3d as a reference :)

Planning?! On a computer?!
I pity you sir, pity I say.
-
Really looking forward to seeing the complete layout. Just spent the afternoon walking through Dotonbori in Osaka and saw the giant moving crab sign - reminded me of this project. If you're adding more buildings, you have to go crazy with the signs. Perhaps a 3D tako or fugu.

I was there last week :D
Plenty of inspiration everywhere, the trouble is making it all lol

Started on a simple bike design...

I will probably get it rp'd and sort it for metal casting. It will still need a lot of tweaking (this is my first real time to 'draw' something like this) and decisions will need to be made on the kit parts - what fits into where etc.
I'll carry on with the truck next week as well :)

Over the last few years I have accepted that I dont have the patience for large projects like this, I need to chop and change or I burn out.
That just adds to my fascination when I see other people do it properly. Cool stuff :)

What kind of bike are you aiming for. A sports bike? Some sort of bike for your citizens to commute around in?

Initially a sporty road bike, fairly generic but hopefully with a futuristic air.
Then it'll be more mundane scooters and mopeds (again, with a slightly futuristic look to them).
That's the plan anyway :)

Have you designed them in CAD by any chance? ;)
Looks like the sort of stuff our 'engineers' come up with for me to ride..
If you're looking for futuristic look at images of a GTS 1000 or the Britten race bike. Both have hub centre suspension systems. Way before their time. More akin to Akira than the forks and swingarms we use nowadays. :)

Yep, Kum Bikers. Told you the name was unfortunate.

Yes they are Infinity bikers "Kum motorized troops"

Any chance of some proper bosozoku bikes with the extended front fairings and the extended seats? :D
(http://www.mundomoto.esp.br/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/japan-bike.jpg)

That's the one Dewbakuk, there's another version with some strange front suspension configuration (don't ask me, I just break the things ;)) which looks more futuristic.
Of course if you want proper futuristic you should be looking at the electric bikes they're churning out. Makes sculpting the engine a lot easier too. ::)

You mean this? Looks like it would increase the pressure on the fork connection, although tolerances are pretty high there anyway and I'll assume the engineers know what they're doing ;)
How does it handle? Is it as bonkers as it looks?
Edit: and to pretend to be adding to the thread, this is still one of my favourites.

Interesting handle bars on that o_o

In a RL context, I would be VERY nervous to be on a bike with anything but mechanical steering...
-
It's interesting to see the girder forks on something new like the Ariel, they look futuristic, but have been on British bikes since the 20's. Conventional forks and upside downers are fairly recent in the grand scheme of things.
I haven't had the pleasure(?) of riding the Ariel yet but I, ahem, know a man who has, and he was pretty impressed with it. That sweet Honda V4 has always been asking for a sportier chasis.
Anyway, apologies for derailing the thread James. Back to futuristic Japan! :D

Impressive.

that's a great taubike! Did you manage to use only spare parts like double heads or other unused options? :)
-
Is it made completely from Tau parts...?
The "chassis" is from an older version of a Dark Eldar jetbike. The rest of the bits are mostly Tau.
Did you manage to use only spare parts like double heads or other unused options? :)
Unfortunately, no. While some were spares, some had to be special ordered from bits dealers. For instance: the wheels consist of four marker light discs from a Tau Hammerhead. The Hammerhead box only contains two.

Interesting handle bars on that o_o
I've seen something similar on a real bike, apparently it's not an issue, like using the curl bars on a racing bicycle. As TBC said though, that's not a mechanical steering control, besides, you only turn the handlebars consciously at very low speeds.
Nice, I have a few of those Dark Eldar bike cores to use in conversions.

Back from the depths :D
The bike has had a bit more work on it but progression is slow as I don't get much of a chance to draw at the mo.
I have however started painting a vehicle :D It's an Ainsty cargo hauler and I'm trying to do it in a 'proper' fashion, as in so it looks like a professional modeller has done it...
A little bit of modding first with front lights and protective bars, ariel, door handles and some engine bits on the back.
And then the colouring in with some additional decals from an old mech kit.

Still a fair amount of weathering to go but I'm fairly happy so far (makes a change from cliffs, castles and landscapes lol ).

Nice work!
The design is a bit odd, unless I am missing something it seems to be a very heavily armoured vehicle that is not really meant for combat, but the paintjob looks great. :)

It is, mate.

It wont be long before he starts covering it in blue foam, though....

If it's designed to operate in hostile environmental conditions then the armour doesn't seem too out if place.
I take it it's all airbrush work as it's so smooth? I must check out Lidl.

It is when you look at it but it'll certainly do for what I have in mind :)

It's not actually, it's a Humbrol spray can (Sand) and then GW washes and a very subtle drybrush over the top. It still needs a bit more weathering though :)
I recognise that model. ;)
Why's that then ;D

Individual cut bricks I hope, on the back. :D
Where to you get the time for all this?

Hmm, I might have something that would suit that. I'll have a search in my bits box :)

Yes, individually cut bricks ::) lol
I have a time machine :D (actually, I have a wife that works shifts which gives me a fair amount of time in the evenings)
I've made a decision on the two main factions for the game. It'll be 'gangs' and military style police. The gangs borrowing heavily from Akira of course using mainly Copplestone and EM4 figures, the same for the coppers as well. Below are two support units. The first being a re-appropriated construction 'suit' for the gangs and the second is a standard security bot.
The construction suit is from GZG with the addition of a heavy autocannon, I think an ammo hopper might be appropriate :D

And the security bot is from Antenocities (no mods on this) although a lot of items have been removed from their site :( Just glad I got two :)

The base is a home made one using scraps of pavement and 120grit sandpaper on an acrylic disc.
Plenty of new ideas getting jotted down but I have to go back and make some more buildings first before getting carried away lol
cheers
James

Very nice work.
If remember correctly (a bit of time back since did the masters) the gattling gun from GZG Charger Mecha should fit the Civie Mecha Arm.

Got the weathering done on the cargo hauler. It's quite subtle but I think it works none the less. I didn't have any vents for a hover version so I'll be sticking with the wheels.

Blue foam? Won't need a power lifter then unless it's super dense sci fi manga blue foam of course? :D

I did think about that and the option is still open but for the time being I'll leave it as a more generic vehicle.

I have rehashed the bike I was working on as I wasn't happy with the 'feel' of it.
This is the new version and the original is below. Obviously there are still a fair few things to complete on it but the general shape is there which is probably the most difficult bit.

I'll hopefully getting this complete in the next couple of weeks and then it's off for rp'ing :D The wheels will be separate and there will probably be only one fork.
I'll also be looking at various mopeds, other bikes and general civvie vehicles with as much variety as I can but keeping the same 'feel' to everything.
cheers
James

I watched Akira a few nights ago- hadn't seen it in about 20 years. Even better than I remembered.
Great project, I really like the cargo vehicle.
-
What about basing it more on real bikes? They already look really futuristic! I'm afraid the wheels don't work for me! :? Bike designers have been trying forever to reduce the spokes in the middle of the wheel. It's to do with turning, the less mass in the middle of the wheel the quicker the bike can turn. I would think bikes in the future would have even less than this one for example....
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/nWJR6bstGsPWsmzSh6t-E-sE7TOljg8teu8SjRfePJ4U0Akqb5kbMl1KFlmRJkqpbefltH1ZN8x5dcF4nTgO18yOKYo0DszDMV7gnEse3FOKO94eBT-1hcbn4Rr_zpsvogcq0le.jpeg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/nWJR6bstGsPWsmzSh6t-E-sE7TOljg8teu8SjRfePJ4U0Akqb5kbMl1KFlmRJkqpbefltH1ZN8x5dcF4nTgO18yOKYo0DszDMV7gnEse3FOKO94eBT-1hcbn4Rr_zpsvogcq0le.jpeg.html)

-
I'm with Andy, the wheels are too chunky. Is there going to be an engine mass beneath the fairing or is it open space. Right now it looks like you're making an off road bike due to the fork angles and the wheels. Also there is no clearance for the front wheel/shocks to do their job.
I like the fairing shape though :)
-
To be fair gents, I ain't no bike designer lol
I'm just going from concept ideas gleaned from the tinternet ;)
Comments have been taken on board and I shall alter the bike accordingly. The empty space is for an engine housing that will fill the space after everything else in place. You still see off road bikes in towns etc so it is an option.
More to follow shortly :)
cheers
James
-
You still see off road bikes in towns etc so it is an option.
Indeed you do, to be honest I think they are often better suited as the upright position and additional height gives better visibility to the rider while also making them more noticeable to car drivers*. Besides, I love the ride of a Triumph Tiger :)
*You'll never get that tucked in speed that you get from a japanese street bike though.
-
The other small thing to remember is the size of these as they are only 40-45mm long, the treads for example are less than 0.5mm in any given direction.
I also had a thought about making some of the parts interchangable but that might not be the best idea :?
cheers
James
-
Although I quite liked the original concept that is a lot better. :D
-
Well, I've done a new wheel.
The main problem being to remember that these are going to be metal cast and the parts have to be thick enough for that.

Any ideas for suitable riders? There's already a 40k related discussion (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=71326).
I'll most likely be getting generic riders sculpted with possible weapon options. Another idea is to have the legs ready sculpted on the bike so it would just be a case of different torsos and arms :)
cheers
James
-
I'd certainly by interested in some of those generic riders! Cast in old bendy lead (if any caster is still doing this?) would make it easy to fit them to any bike. I'm especially searching riders for the 'max steel' hotwheels motorcycle (also very 'akira' looking IMO). Swapping heads or arms is easy anyway.
-
All looks good so far, I like what you did with that transport, the weathering is spot on, not too much, just enough.
I've always thought it a shame that they don't do a version without the armoured windows :(
-
If you're going more with a sports look what about something like this....
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20141003_143229_zpsibhaa0je.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141003_143229_zpsibhaa0je.jpg.html)
You won't need treads on the tyres. The way things are going, in the near future there will probably be a compound to make the tyres 'stick' to the road. If your bike is in a moving pose, the speed your bike will be going you wouldn't make out a tread anywho.
*You'll never get that tucked in speed that you get from a japanese street bike though.
Wash your mouth out, Italian bikes are better! ;) Best bike I ever had was a wee Aprillia RS250. The neighbours used to love it on a nice sunday morning. They'd just put their washing out and I start up my wee 2 stroke only for an oily blue smoke cloud to come out the back!!
-
Still testing the ground with 3d drawing mate ;)
Moving on with this and will go for the wheel clamp style of axle but still have a hub. It may not look right but I'll post it when it's drawn and we'll see :)
Still plenty of refining to do ::)

Not quite in the style of Akira, but interesting in a Future/ post apocalyptic way. The style of the bikes from the Movie Priest.

Very jet engine. Cool designs.

Jesus Andym wouldn't want to pull a stoppie on that!!! :o
Italian bikes only work in the sunshine, everyone knows that. Although they do look the part. Much preferred the Panigale to the BMW S1000. ;)
Post Apoc movies always make me chuckle. Every biker is riding a gas guzzling 1100 with nitrous or a crosser with a tank the size of a tin of beans. If fuel was that scarce everyone would be on C90's or CG125's. The only things to survive the apocalypse; CG125s, cockroaches and AK47's. the future is dark...
Generally your rear wheel will be bigger than the front, unless its a motocross bike where its the other way round. :D
-
Jesus Andym wouldn't want to pull a stoppie on that!!! :o
Or try and use the brakes. You have to push upwards with your foot...

Just like Buells :)
I like the new wheels :)

I found the opposite was true. I had a Mille for a few years after the RS250 and it used to overheat at traffic lights and traffic jams, and shut down!!! :o Also the heat off of the double exhausts used to be fun in said traffic jams while in full leathers! ! :o

Maybe update the rider not the bike? :D

If we're throwing ideas at the man, instead of giving feedback on his current designs, I'd like to add:
http://www.automotiveworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Toyota-i-Road.jpg
Only because we know he'll design all of them eventually, right? :)

Oh, where is this going, mate?
lol lol lol

Maybe a slight ip issue with that one lol
Only because we know he'll design all of them eventually, right? :)
Well, you can't have just one type of bike on the roads ;)
Oh, where is this going, mate?
lol lol lol
No idea ;D
Well, after being in Japan I got all inspired (again) and had to get this finished :D
It still needs the police emblem on the front but sourcing one the right size without having to buy an entire kit is proving problematic.
I think I went a bit over the top with the weathering but it is a test model really ;)

Quite pleased with the base (those are actual Japanese magazines reduced dramatically and printed on thin paper)
Using 'proper' modelling techniques on this as a kind of tester for when I get to make this...

I received some more figures from Doug at EM4 (good service by the way 8) ) and can actually start thinking about the two main factions, police and disaffected youngsters.
But now it's back to Dorset ::)

Great stuff! :)
-
Lovely work, and yes - the base is pretty special.
-
Nice work. I sometimes think the small the scale goes the more extreme the weathering needs to get in order to achieve the right visual impact, so I think the weathering will look fine on the table and looks great in the photos.
-
That base is the nuts, mate....
:-* :-*
..... but it cannot be right....would a Japanese street get that dirty?
Or is the robot in the process of 'punishing' a litterer..?
???

Thanks chaps :)

True, the streets of Japan are ridiculously clean but this supposed to be Neo Tokyo... ;D

Despite the magnificent figures, it was the first thing that cought my eye.

Despite the magnificent figures, it was the first thing that cought my eye.
Indeed! :)
And it looks good to me! Though the weathering is maybe a tad overdone - that is just a matter of taste, others have loved it. :) Regarding the decal it may be possible to source an image and print your own?
-
Thanks again gents :)
The water bottle is from a company called Meng who make lots of different types for 1/35 dioramas. Not easy to come by though (well, cheaply at any rate and I don't do eBay).
The emblem is actually a 3d one and is bright gold so a decal is not really suitable unless I can find a proper one :?
cheers
James
-
Nice work on that bike. What 3d modeller are you using?
Police bot looks good too. I like the weathering.

It's Rhino ver4 (32 bit I think).

Easy to use? Free?
Very intuitive and can be used for 3d or 2d and there are lots of online tutorials but the cheapest I've seen it is about £710...

Another brilliant project :-*
How could I have missed this before !!!

Proper job!

Alternating between this and castle Blackwolf at the mo (pictures of which tomorrow) I got the office block out and started putting it together.
Shitty weather means no spraying yet but hopefully it'll be clear over the weekend.
It's clear acrylic so not the easiest thing to see but hopefully you'll get the idea.

Thinking about lighting this one as well :)
I took lots of pictures of unusual buildings whilst I was out there last time and will scratch build quite a few. This will help to break up the monotony of the skyline as I'm imagining it will get quite samey using the same building types all the time.
And last but not least, I started work on a construction labor. 1:100 plastic kit that scales quite nicely for this. I've taken the huge missile pods off and will replace with scratch built construction arms and paint it the same colour as the utility vehicle a few pages back :)

More to follow...

Love that mech, mate.
It is going to be a cracker.
8) 8)
The building being made of clear acrylic has given a few ideas for another type of game completely....hmmm.
;)
-
Excellent. :)
-
I can't really make out the building mate, but anything built by you is always up to high standards! The mech on the other hand looks cracking already! Are you planning on Aliens style loader arms?
-
The building is ace! 8)
-
The building is ace! 8)
Just smashing! Is it made like 'trays' that stack? Do you plan to sell these? It would make a great NYC Apple Cube Store for an urban game!
-
That building in it's transparent state could be very useful for certain games... (Say, playing a cyberspace raid)
I like the idea for the construction labor. :-* That goes in the inspiration folder for my Appleseed plans.
-
Many thanks for the replies gents :)

Do tell :D
I can't really make out the building mate, but anything built by you is always up to high standards! The mech on the other hand looks cracking already! Are you planning on Aliens style loader arms?
I've primed the building and piccies are below. To be fair, the mech is pretty much the same condition I got it in (not saying that in a bad way of course) but it's already cleaned up and primed industrial yellow. Not sure about the arms yet, I'm thinking something similar to the construction labor arms in Patlabor (picture forthcoming).
Is it made like 'trays' that stack? Do you plan to sell these? It would make a great NYC Apple Cube Store for an urban game!
It is made as 'trays' that stack and the intention is to sell them but I have an idea about that first...
I like the idea for the construction labor. :-* That goes in the inspiration folder for my Appleseed plans.
Type in construction labor in google images and you get quite a few designs come up :)
On to the next piccies :D
Along with the more standard blocks of flats and office buildings I'll be making various 'key' buildings. There won't be any interior access as it's quicker to build them as is and the idea is to fill up space relatively quickly. Lighting them is also necessary.
First off is the lighting core.
This is the standard technique we use at work to light the interior of buildings that won't be seen into.
And then with the new building carcass over the top.
The ground floor plate, lighting core and batteries all are removable to enable batteries to be changed. The crap behind the glazing will be hidden with a frosted plate.
I'll probably knock the light intensity back a bit as it's too harsh at the moment.
There are a few gubbins to go on the back but that'll happen last after the main build is complete.
Here is the office block with some primer on it... It's going to take a lot of furniture to populate it o_o
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Akira/F8EE604E-B338-459A-A904-BDA231C6F367_zpsjlqndjij.jpg)

WOW! 8)
Do you plan to have rooftops for the lit buildings for troops on the tops?
-
Do tall men bang their head on doorways?
(Lovely stuff James - your skills really show.)
-
Thanks chaps :)
All the buildings will have various stuff on the rooftops and will be accessible.
No foreheads were harmed in the making of this model ;D
cheers
Dave

That is looking bloody good, Dave.

Love the lighting too.
It would be great at Salute, given the lighting in there you would see it for miles.

That is fantastic. It would be great to see all your future-tech buildings on one board, glowing and lovely. :o
-
Good lord, how do you find time to create all this fantastic stuff?
-
Amazingly good. 8)
-
The office block is looking the business James. Is that LED lighting strips you've used on the tall building?
-
I would love to make one of the highrise apt blocks as the center of a table! Just smashing!
-
Amazing! Finally some future buildings that look like genuine architecture instead of a repurposed dish-soap bottle!
That really looks great Jim - you're putting your day job to good use!
-
Thanks chaps :)
It would be great to see all your future-tech buildings on one board, glowing and lovely. :o
Hopefully in a week or two I'll be able to put a few together lit. I've got five in various stages of completion which should be enough for at least a 2x2 board.
Good lord, how do you find time to create all this fantastic stuff?
A very patient wife who finishes work late ;)
Is that LED lighting strips you've used on the tall building?
It is, they come on a 50m reel and I 'aquire' what's left after a project at work as it would just get thrown out otherwise.
you're putting your day job to good use!
Don't say that, I wont enjoy doing these anymore if it's compared to work lol
Got the lights sorted for the top four floors of the office block, my. God, there's going to be a lot of furniture to fill them up lol
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Akira/952D862A-6967-4112-98F1-315F4C63649A_zpsynxc52ko.jpg)

I think for the demo table I'll just doing the wiring as a best fit and not worry too much about it as hopefully people won't be playing on it at Salute.
If I get time tonight I'll post a picture of them all together.
cheers

I think I'll paint some figures next.

If you ever manage to light these up at Salute, all the other stall holders will be fighting to get next too you to get some excess light to light up their models.

lol is it that bad?
A vertical lighting strip that moved up and down would be cool, kind of like an elevator moving up and down. No idea if it's possible though!

Excellent James, excellent indeed 8) 8)

Impressive, most impressive.
:-* :-*

Pretty smart. :D
It'll look amazing all lit up.

P for Porn?

Pachinko more likely, what with the flashy lights etc. Not that that's much better. :-)
Magnificent, James. I don't know if this should spur me on to actually start Mega-City terrain or cower in abject fear of being inadequate.

Stunning.
E-wire would some great signs?

Wooooow!!!

Thanks chaps :)

lol true although they all be battery powered as I'm not paying £200 for a socket :o

I did think about a Pachinko parlour but the ones with the flashy lights tend to be in the less built up suburbs and the ones in the high rise areas are just in normal blocks.
Go on, have a go. I'd love to see what you can do :)
E-wire would some great signs?
I think I know what you mean there o_o
Yes, plenty of lit signs and bill boards will be making an appearance :D

James
-
my. God, there's going to be a lot of furniture to fill them up lol
Why don't you fill them the way they always do in films, first couple of floors as normal, then the third will be a drawing office with rolls of blueprints and drums and the fourth will be lots of sheets of polythene (using thick clingfilm) and glass panes stacked up. Perfect for shootouts with off duty cops missing their shoes. ;)

Looks awesome.... How are you going to reach the figures?

Or maybe just a small fella he can tie to a stick.
:D

Stunning.
E-wire would some great signs?
This is stuff is pretty cool. I've seen it used on clothing and I've wondered about cutting it down for modelling use. However, would cutting down a standard 1m strip to 200mm leave you with an overpowered battery pack, for example? I know squat about this sort of stuff, which should be evident with the above question.
With the office blocks and hotel above you could light the roof parapets, etc.
-
Thanks gents :)

Not a bad idea but most Japanese offices in the centre of towns are just normal offices o_o

Impressive work James :D

That's bloody impressive work!

Thanks again chaps :)
I've been ill all week but I managed to paint something this morning, a copper :D
An EM4 figure painted to look like a Japanese riot cop.
Main colours were done quickly but more time was spent on the details...

Nice painting on the cop :)
The litter on his base is a nice touch too. Is it a piece of foil or something or is that glint from it paint? It looks very authentic.

Nice job on that blue/black.
Not an easy task, but you have nailed it.
:-* 8) :-*

Shiny, love the goggles and the overall look

Yep, very nice 8)

They'll be Shamazeballs :D

Good looking riot copper you got there Mr. Bibbles 8) And that builder mechs looks to become a great addition, any news regarding the arms you will build for it?

Many thanks for the replies gents :)

It's a bit of choccy foil just crumpled up and laid over the surface, glued on then inked over.

I might just try that when I have a few more :)
It looks great.
It scales really well and I think with a different paint job it could pass for normal paper etc.

Because then numpties like me would not know what that meant.
:D
-
I'm curious though, why doesn't his vest say 警察
From the pictures I've seen, it's not there, just a white POLICE label on the back and yellow unit numbers on the helmet although Paul's answer did make me chuckle lol
Also, there's no way I'm even going to attempt painting that on a 28mm figure. When I do the normal police (koban) I might see about getting some relevant decals done :)
cheers
James

Cop looks great :)

Great stuff James. Looking forward to seeing more :)

This continues to develop beautifully. Having recently got home from Tokyo, the buildings look absolutely spot on.
Any idea on an 'on sale' date on the acrylic buildings yet? I'm itching to get back to my own project, but if these are going on sale, I'll put down the foamcore and back away slowly ;)

Every time I go I take hundreds of pictures of everything, most of them turn out crap lol
Regarding the sales, I am seriously looking into injection moulding as they way they are done at the moment is quite laborious. I've got some feelers out there and am slowly going through the parts in 3d to make them suitable...
Might be some time though (got a proper job that comes first) but the general idea is a hopeful 2015 release ???

I'll just have to slap you twice as hard then >:D
-
Right then, got some more figures :)
A chem suit gang with a nefarious purpose >:D
I actually got these from the B+B at Warfare yesterday, £10 for five rather well painted figures. Unfortunately, they are rather dark and I didn't do a good job of photographing them.
The bases are by me though, they came without any.
I'm in the middle of building a light box (when complete I'll post it in the Workbench) that'll hopefully able me to take much better pictures with less messing around with picture editors :)

I also meant to pick some more figures from Doug but after seeing him and after having a little chat I wandered off and completely forgot ::)

They look great.
Nice work on those bases too.
Messy place this Akiraville.

One too many bangs on the head, maybe...... ::)
-
They look good; the bases are great - the figs could perhaps use a bit more contrast to make them "pop" more, as they say.
-
Now these have been posted in the 101 painting club I'll show them here for completeness :)
The first Neo Tokyo police squad (they're actually numbered as the second but it's the fist one I've painted).

I'll probably do a few hangers next as the police will have a lot of hardware (most of it from Antenocitis).

Very crisp, mate.
Love that blue/black.
:-* :-*

Nicely done! Love the goggle and bases in particular.
-
Like them James. The red goggles really set them off. I like the paved bases too.

Many thanks for the replies chaps :)

Really nice. I've had a load of those guys sitting around for years now because I couldn't settle on a scheme, but that simple black/blue/grey is really effective and well executed.
-
Lovely work as always Jim - love the shell casings, a nice detail and the goggles in red give the right hint of menace

Good looking gangers and LEOs there 8) But to call 4 chaps a squad... I guess the Neo Tokyo budget cuts have affected their police force as well ;)

Great stuff, I'm not all too familiar with the source of inspiration but have been following this keenly purely from a project point of view.
Really like what you are creating here. Top notch stuff.
Having seen your police etc I keep thinking of these:
Looks like they could fit in, but again, not sure as I don't know the source material.

Nice work James, as always :)

James you talented little monkeylugs!

Loving those goggles. Nicely done, Sunny Jim.

They could at a push but I've got plenty for now from Doug and will get some more soon :)

Well, got some goodies from Antenocities at Warfare last year but have only just started to look at painting them.
The little car fits in with what I'm thinking style wise (the other civvie vehicles, although very nice, are too futuristic). I started to paint it and mask it with a liquid mask but unfortunately it' got ammonia in it and it reacted badly with the spray (acrylic).
Not to worry though because after the swearing I realised that it could be used as an old and knackered one... So after some heavy weathering, here we are.

Beat up is not what I expect to see on an Antenociti car, that's for sure. Very cool!

No, wait, that's accidental?
AARRRGGHHH!
Doug

Bet that guy regrets not opting for the rustproofing now!

Certainly fits the Akira vibe - that always took place in the less salubrious parts of Neo Tokyo from memory.

Fits your Project perfectly, as some of the bases we have seen have trash on them, a car more shiny than that would fit the bill :)
So you have some Antennociti cars up for grabs then? ;D

Any plans for a parking hall type of building btw?

wow, that's an awesome car, and very nicely painted too, James!
-
Really nice work on the car. I always like a rusty car over a shiny one when I'm gaming.
I haven't been to the Future Wars threads for a long while now. Just went through a good 8 pages of missed thread and there's some amazing work to be seen here. The newer buildings just blew me away.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Any plans for a parking hall type of building btw?
Got one earlier on ;)
Time for a long overdue update...
But only with drawings, screen shots below ;D
Did a bit of work on the skyline for the buildings as this sort of thing will really help to make it look like Japan. I've got quite a few images that I'll use for billboards but I also think that most of this type of stuff will be made from strip styrene as it'll be easier than drawing, lasering, piecing together etc. And I can make sure that they are all different.
The one on the corner (with two boards) will probably have a walkway around the interior allowing for snipers to take up a position etc. There's also the opportunity to put some LEDs and lighting in them :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Akira/skyline%202_zps5970bhex.jpg)
I'll get everything out when I return from my hols as I've got a bigger table now and it'll be good to see it all out again :)
cheers
James
-
I'm also debating whether to do the board on 300mm x 300mm tiles as I can roughly fit two buildings and half a road on one.
This also means that it'll be easier to make the basement levels under the buildings.
It'll need some thinking for none 90 degree corners but it shouldn't be too bad :)
cheers
James
-
Looking appropriately 'Japanese' there :D
-
30x30 is the way!

I think you're right Steve and 300x300 is the way to go, see below...

The expressways in Japan squeeze in between the buildings and so having the smaller boards allows for this to happen whilst keeping the modularity :)
I hope to start getting it all out and building on it this coming week :)
cheers
James

I think you're right Steve and 300x300 15mm is the way to go.

That's 3 tiles of 300 x 300 (or 30 by 30 in my language :D)?
That arrangement looks really nice. Very busy and yet playable. What board size are you aiming for?
Btw there's a box at IKEA, the Tjena, with a lid that measures out as 32x35x32. I haven't tried any yet but might be a useful storage option

It looks ok I suppose (said in a grudging voice lol) but it's not Tokyo or any part of Japan.
It does look very playable though (as do all their tables).
I think I'm going for four by four but with options to expand if necessary. Got plenty of storage now in my new room :D

The white strips in the road are supports for the box section and won't be seen once painted.
Gonna try and finish off a couple of buildings tomorrow (inbetween brick course drying on the castle) and make some bill boards :D
Still go the baseboards to sort but it'll be easier now there are more things to play with.

Lovely work, that one, and for once with enough headroom. ;)
I am a bit concerned about the stability, though. Will you be adding an internal structure (e.g. metal tubing) to prevent it being knocked over?

This project just gets better all the time. I was trying to explain how cool this is to my wife, and just couldn't summarize the awesome into bite sized pieces.

Thanks again chaps :)

It's made from solid chemiwood (resin based compound good for machining) and is rather heavy but I might have to pin the stanchion to the horizontal just to be sure. It might also get a small base but I'll have to look at street view to get a feel for what's right.

I was more about the small ground area of the stanchion compared to the rather large amount, I assume, of leverage the overhanging sections will produce. I wonder if you could sink metal tubes into the base board into which you'd place a "plug" on the base; you could do inserts to cover the tubes if the expressway is not in use. Rare earth magnets might be another choice.
Don't get me wrong, I find this awesome on so many levels, but my experiences with terrain like that was that they always topple over, especially when there are figures on top (personal clumsiness not being the sole cause, although of considerable importance in my case :D).
-
Got you :)
The 300mm square bases were going to be a top layer of lasered acrylic with a solid substrate so I reckon I can incorporate some sort of insert into the base. The sections themselves will joined at the top anyway but extra certainly won't hurt :)
cheers
James

Brilliant, ya mad bugger!

Dam dude! Thats much better than mine! :'( I had a half (split down the length so it can go at the side of the board) which I'd worked on a while ago for my 2000AD project I'd still to finish/show, now I think I'll just bin it! As the famous singer said..... 'rip it up and start again'
Why not build a pavement section you can glue the motorway stanchion on as a base? It wouldn't even have to continue aling the full length of the motorway, it could stop and start to denote different road routes underneath.
-
Cheers fellas :)

Bollocks it is lol

The underneath of the expressways aren't like that unfortunately, more like no-go zones that occasionally have bikes or materials stored in the area underneath. They are then usually fenced off. You how much of an anal retard stickler for correct detail I am ;)
Got the detail done on the stanchion, keeping it fairly simple as there's not that much on most of them. I think I'll do a little set of ladders and a platform on one of them to give a bit more gameplay.
I can't spray today as next door have visitors in the garden so here's an un-primed view of the first billboard. The signs are tacked on for now as I think they might need changing to avoid any ip infringement (as technically this project is an 'advertisement' for my services).

I'm also leaning toward doing more damage and destruction, expressway sides, billboards etc to allow for more gaming potential.
Now back to the castle :D
cheers
James

I've gone for a slightly lighter road colour than what was used for the bases, seems to fit better now. The little holes are for the road barrier supports that'll be done at some point, still need to find a suitable material for the barriers themselves.
No detritus yet, I'll need to spend an afternoon making a massive pile of it and use it as teeny tiny scatter terrain lol
cheers
James

I wish I could paint white lines to your "rushed" standard. Looks good looking forward to seeing a painted up section of the expressway.

I haven't, no. There's washes and weathering powders on there (about five different colours although you can't tell) but I never thought about drybrushing. Go any examples?
The ones in Japan are very streaky though :)
cheers
James

Oh Yes... 8) 8) 8) 8)

I'm struggling to find decent pics of examples mate! Drybrushing into the corners and recesses can add some different colour and add some extra interest to large flat areas.

Mamazilla!
:D
-
Mamazilla!
No, the rubber monster needs to be taller than the buildings, remember. :D
-
Simply fantastic!
-
Thanks chaps :)
The original Godzilla was 50metres tall which would be a metre at 1:50 (which is the general scale of this project) so Nick in high heels and the rubber suit might just work lol
cheers
James
-
Great work on those Buildings the project is really coming together, What's next?
-
..... so Nick in high heels and the rubber suit might just work lol
Please dont write things like that!
:o :o
-
Wonderful work on everything! :-*
So these will be ready for the BLAM 2016 then? :)
Might the "hab-blocks" be commercially available at some point?
-
Cracking stuff mate! :-* Those signs just make the place look sooo lived in! 8)
-
Just went through this whole thread form the start. This is one of the coolest projects I've ever seen! :o
-
Very inspiring thread!
-
James.
If you did some signage with precut holes/tubes to accept e-wire you could also do an aircon unit that could take a 'd' battery and switch.
Very Neon Nippon? 😊
-
Thanks chaps :)

Thats it.....he's done that many bricks on Castle Blackwolf, now seeing phantom bricks everywhere!! :o ;)

lol
I can see them now (on my phone). They weren't showing on my laptop o_o
cheers

Just read this whole thread.
I am, frankly, in awe.
-
Had a bit of fun yesterday with some elastic-trickery :)
I'm thinking that when this eventually gets played on it will be interesting to play it with the house lights off and only use the board lights. I can foresee many breakages though as the action heats up lol
First for lighting were some simple ones under the parking tower canopy. They were stuck in place with a bit of wood glue and the controller was glue with a hot glue gun inside.

They are not particulary bright but I don't mind that as quite a few on the ones I've seen over there aren't that bright anyway.

Next up are a couple of shots of the tower and shop with an added street lamp. Difficult to take photos in the dark lol

And here are some shots of 'sketch model' light fitting. I think I'll be rp'ing the proper ones as it'll be much easier.

Ahahahahahahaa. MAAAAAAAAADNESS!
-
Crazy. ;D
But, got me to thinking how impressive that would look on a board for the Batman miniatures game..
-
Had a bit of fun yesterday with some elastic-trickery :)
I'm thinking that when this eventually gets played on it will be interesting to play it with the house lights off and only use the board lights.
Mr Silent Invader did the very same thing with his rather brilliant Aliens game and board.
Now, enough electrics - back to your Freys! ;)
-

I thank you. :). Lots of fun can be had in night time games, especially when minis in the shadows get overlooked. Funnily I've started reworking that Aliens board for another nighttime project. ;) Yes, another project. :D
I really like those street lights James: very effective with a great ambience.
-
I'll be impressed when you start putting real gas lamps in your vsf stuff. :P
-
And here is where the madness starts........
I think you were a bit late with that statement
-
Madness yes, but brilliant work nevertheless :D
Streetlamps like that, awesome.
-
Beilliant, mate.
:-* :-*
(Ya mad bugger, but we all know that already).
You had better be careful when it comes to turning the lights dpwn, though.....
The thought of the voice of Silent Invader appearing unexpectedly in your ear saying: 'I'm behind you!' could be quite unnerving!
You have been warned.
;D ;D
-
Jesus Christ, that IS insane! But also really cool. Wow! :o
-
Cheers fellas, it helps to spur me along :)
Now, enough electrics - back to your Freys! ;)
Yes Captain :(
cheers
James
-
Love it!
-
Electrifying.
-
Electrifying.
That pun was ... shocking.
-
Top stuff James. Lighting just adds that extra level of atmosphere.
-
lol lol lol you're a mental case!
So are you going to make glow in the dark dice and tspe measures now? ;)
-
This is such an amazing project. I don't envy all the hard work that needs to be committed in order to have such first class results! I saw you stocking the store shelves. Miniatures building authority has some useful commercial pieces as well. Maybe that will help. I raised the shelves a bit with foam.
(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/Planetoid51/image_zpsnztacaux.jpeg) (http://s917.photobucket.com/user/Planetoid51/media/image_zpsnztacaux.jpeg.html)
-
Thanks for the response chaps :)
Electrifying.

Apart from you two, you can get your coats lol
I carried on with shelf stacking for a little bit yesterday and I'm thinking I'll cast this one and maybe make another the same size and a couple of smaller ones.
Thanks for the headsup on the commercial shelves Aquamarine, they certainly look the part but for the time being I'll stick with my own until I get fed up with them lol
cheers
James
-
Good one, stick to your shelves James, especially if you are able to mass produce them easily.
-
Blimey James, that lighting is impressive, it's just like watching Akira, what a blast it would be to play. I hope you pick up some of those infinity appleseed like mech suits too. Then you can start working on your 1:48 Eva 01 :D ... or your 1:48 Godzilla Vs Mothra game :D :D :D ;D
Bento boxes and Sushi rolls*!!!! Nice one James! Will there be uniformed store people with aprons and gloves on too??? In all seriousness though, that's some nice brushwork at such a scale. I'd be tempted to print off little wrappers and stick them around styrene/straws personally though.
Cheers
Matt
*They better be refrigerated ;)
-
Wow wow wow...this project is so cool. The lighting, the grungy terrain, the total look, the detail. Fantastic man. I want to play games on your table!
-
Thanks again chaps :)

I'll be doing fridges as well but using the back wall to backlight them so they glow :)
I've got a 1:48 Patlabor kit waiting to go and have got a couple of the Infinity 'suits' I've also been watching Bubblegum Crisis on YouTube for more inspiration, it's just a real shame that the GZG KnightSabres are so small :(
Any suggestions for Boomers and KnightSabre proxies greatfully received :D
I'll pop over to AndyM's civvie thread for suitable ideas for shop staff ;)
cheers
James

I'm totally fascinated by this project, I feel like a moth attracted to light o_o o_o o_o
-
Inspired madness! :o
-
I thought the boomers still scaled okay? Sure I saw a thread a year or two back that showed them in comparison shots.
Some of these are good (most are not).
https://victoryforce.com/Victoryaurorapage.html
To be honest, for boomer types I'd look at Void/Urban War Syntha figures and Warzone Ressurection... Whatever the cyborg faction is called...
Knight Sabres... I wouldn't. I'd look for a more modern designed equivalent. Appleseed style or similar, the whole single piece lower led look never worked for me :)
-
I'd also recommend the ZandrisIV range of mecha.
http://z4miniatures.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/online-shop-28mm-sci-fi.html
-
I also love this one for the not-too-high-tech look in Cyberpunk:

Nah, they are too small really, a shame as they are great little sculpts and I really like the original KnightSabres, none mobile ankles and all :D
Time to go shopping again lol
cheers
James

In fairness, look at the height difference between you and your good lady... Also between your wife and yourself. Just use the 25mm sculpts for the young Japanese ladies :)

Yup, that's a Japanese kombini, alright.
-
I think if you're going to make shelves with sushi, you just need to keep rolling with it. lol
Seriously though, that is pretty freaking awesome. :-*
-

No one should be allowed to maki such terrible puns ::)
-
That's just raw, man, that's just raw.
(BTW, to be very much a stickler, and possibly mistaken, I don't think I'm seeing any sushi on that shelf. There seems to be onigiri, though.)
-
Did someone mention maki?
:D

I love that cop, what miniatures brand makes it?
-
Surely you need to make a chiller cabinet for those Maki? Hygiene and all.
-
Raivan, the police officer is from either EM4 Miniatures or Copplestone Castings (Both ranges are sculpted by the same person, with just soms differences in the guns, so You could mix and match).
-
They're not stuck on, just for show. Fridges will be forthcoming :D
The copper is from EM4 and a treat to paint (like the vast majority of Copplestones sculpts)
cheers
James
-
Bah. That sushi rice has been overworked to the point of becoming mochi. I can't even see the individual grains! :P
-
It is madness when one needs a knowledge of Japanese foodstuff to understand what teeny-weeny branded packaging is being put where and whether or not it is appropriately chilled!!! :o :D
Oh, and exquisite detailing James 8).
-
So all of this will be about fighting over a masu of rice? ;)
Love the food stuff, the shop will look grand 8)
-
Nice work, mate.
Watching with interest.
;)
Oh, and exquisite detailing James 8).
Yep, be careful.
You will doing spreadsheets for rotating your stock next!
;D

I was actually about to ask him "They don't really leave sushi and such out on shelves like that, do they Jim?"
-
It's fridge shelving Fram, but yes they do. But they have a high stock rotation from the fridge out back. :)
Cheers
Matt

In the bigger combinis the sushi etc is in waist high coolers (lunchtime food stuffs), in the smaller ones they are in the head height coolers. Drinks are in the head height fridges with the doors. I've also occasionally seen waist height freezer compartments (ice creams and the like).
Suffice to say, everything will be in its proper place ;)
Steve, you surely can't be the one to call this kind of detailed research 'madness'? lol
At least I don't have and spreadsheets for it ;D
cheers
James

There's a couple more pavement sections done but I'll take pictures once they've been inked and weathered.
cheers
James

You could have done the headlights on the van.. ::) ;) lol
Still mad. Looks great though. :D
-
Looks great James ..,.
.... I know you know you can do headlights with fibre optics ;) lol
-
Put a skip/bin at the base of the support, put the controller in there.
The van is parked ;)
-
Why doesn't the van headlights come on?
Pffft. I thought this thread was all that and a bag of chips.
Seriously though, amazing! :D
-
Your city is progressing really well. Love the mix of old and new...perfectly Cyberpunk.
-
Dodgy photos look cracking mate 8) 8)
Is it too late to put an access hatch INTO the overpass pillar with a switch? all the wires and gizmos just add to the look I think ;)
Cheers
Matt

Generally there's not a lot under the expressways, maybe a bicycle or car park in the more suburban ones but the main ones are generally empty.
I think I can make room in the central pillar, even though it's solid at the moment, just as Matt mentioned, and use the same light fittings that'll be used for te street lamps.
cheers
James

Good man! :D

Finished off a Neo Tokyo Police flyer to go with the walker. It seems a running theme for the eighties and nineties near future Tokyo to have independent 'police' forces that are separate from the normal bobbies. The Tank Police being one example. Also, they always get the better equiment and are one or two steps below the military...
Great excuse for some hardware >:D
I'm thinking the Dreamforge Eisenkern for the main foot officers with some interesting colour schemes (blue/grey and white).
The flyer is from Antenocities and I've added the launched missiles at the front. I used capoc, and it seems to have worked but it might need a bit of tweaking. I also intend to take some better shots and some close ups but that's for another day.

Bloody hell!
That is some serious hardware for the Old Bill!
:o :o
Would anyone dare feck about in Neo-Tokyo with them around?
Looks great, mate.
8) 8)
Gotta admit that I did consider the possibility that your 'air support' may have borrowed some 'ion panels' from somewhere.
;)
-
Very clever James 8) 8)
No blue lights in Neo Tokyo (not a pisstake but a serious question)?
-
Bloody hell! That's brilliant 8) It takes a real man to show his chopper on a toy soldier forum ;)
-
The chopper, even though rather heavily armed for police actions, really fits well with the walker :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
The specialist police force I'm going for are heavily armed, just google New Dominion Tank Police for an example ;)
No blue lights in Neo Tokyo (not a pisstake but a serious question)?
There will be and interestingly, there is a very sound theory that the buleish tint to the lights in Japan helps to reduce crime o_o
It takes a real man to show his chopper on a toy soldier forum ;)
Funny man lol

James

Thanks for the info James... very interesting: one day I must visit Japan. :D
-
Haven't checked this thread for a while. It looks great with the lots out (also with the lights on, just in case you though I was being insulting)
-
Firing missiles :o :o 8)
Bloody brilliant James. You clever swine, you.
-
Cheers again :)
This will be the last post on this for a while, I've got other things to be getting on with.
All the buildings I've done so far need detailing and I started on the tall, plain office block one with a canopy, light and vending machine (for those that don't know, these vending machines are everywhere and can be used in the event of an emergancy as a location identifier as they all have a code and the address on them that can be used to inform the emergancy services. Not a lot of streets in Japan have street name signs...).
I'm going to print out an image of the vending machine window part and stick it in (a little way back from the front) and see how it looks otherwise, I'll have to make all the bottles/cans etc.

The lights look brighter than they actually are :?
Also, I've got the vertical building signs to do yet, still pondering the best way but I think I've got a solution with my wife's help :)
cheers
James

Does the vending machine work? Because, otherwise, you know, it just looks like a box with a light in it. You need to up the game lol
I think the picture will work just fine.
Interested to see your vertical signage, too!
-
You need to make some really tiny chocolate bars for it! o_o
-
You need to make some really tiny chocolate bars for it! o_o
...of actual chocolate, inside tiny wrappers ;)
-
Hah - I'm glad we're all thinking the same thing.
-
I'm not ;D
-
Just catching up on the thread - more awesomsauce I see. Any plans for illuminated bus stops and advertising hoardings?
It takes a real man to show his chopper on a toy soldier forum ;)
It's quite a small chopper though, isn't it?
-
Man you've been busy. This is looking amazing, totally amazing. The expressway could be real, though if it was in the UK it would have a drunk/dead tramp, graffiti letting you know that "Jammy" says "F*ck You", piss stains along the bottom 3' and a half burnt jazz mag.
The blue lighting thing apparently worked in parts of Glasgow too. I think I read that they didn't know about the crime thing but noticed it later in a sort of "you know what, no one's been stabbed for ages" moment.
-
You'll never finish that APC! lol
-
You'll never finish that APC! lol
I don't even know where it is lol
@Steve - there's not a lot of Japanese graffiti around but I think I'll do some anyway as this is based on Akira which is a more gritty version of Japan (jazz mags included lol)
Have been doing some more lighting and internals but I must apologise for the recent selection of 'close up' shots. I'm still looking for a suitable background to print out but not coming up with anything yet :?

Wow. Just ... wow :o

Fantastic. Excellent figure choice too.

weeeew, lookin' good.

Better and better! Is this going too be a display board too, because any one looking at it WILL want those buildings! I'm loving the lighting; the grainy shots look like CCTV footage.
-
WOW :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-
Love the reception

WOW :-* :-* :-*, looks so good, makes me want to start a ghost in the shell project

Really beautiful - that building reception one looks the part. What does the sign/banner in the window say?

Thanks for the comments chaps :)

Shit, night time photography I'm afraid lol
What does the sign/banner in the window say?

I take it you drive a Subaru?
Love this project I can't believe that I missed it for so long...
Please do a workshop tutorial on your techniques for lighting.
Really good to see Copplestone minis too - especially ones lavished with such a delightful environment.
-
Wow :-*
The office foyer reminds me of a scene from 'Black Rain'.
Stunning James. You versatile devil, you ;)
I take it you drive a Subaru?
lol
He drives a Smart car...
(True but incredible, given that he's about 6' 4" ::))
-
Smart Car lol
-
I think you'll find I don't drive a Smart car anymore (my wife has it and I'm also 6,5") ;D
I have a Lexus, which is also a Japanese car ;)
Cheers for the translation Paul :)

That reception area looks the nuts, mate.
As do the lighting effects.
:-* :-*
As for the Smart Car: I have seen him get into it.
It brought back visions of the Federation Droids 'unfolding' in those crap Star Wars prequels.
Only in reverse..... ;D
-
Brilliant stuff mate. :-*
Where are you getting your lights from? Those fittings in tge reception look spot on.

Also, Jim, is this you?

You're not funny you know ;D

Two Japanese companies, http://my-craft.jp (http://my-craft.jp) and http://arranger.jp (http://arranger.jp)
Not cheap but certainly worth it. I haven't looked to see if there is anything similar in the UK or Europe yet.

Got a little update for this project for the time being and I'll be back on it more next month.
Firstly we have a vending machine that I drew in Rhino and printed on our filament printer at work. Not bad resolution really, only the front needed a bit of a sand. The coin slot failed on the print (too much small detail) and so I made it from styrene instead. It's in a mould box now and I'll be chaning the original file to make some different ones.

Also I've made a start on another building but just made the lower floor for now. Needs some furniture when I decide what sort of shop it is.

I also started to draw up a subway station whilst I was away but it'll be a while before that sees any construction. I'll do a screen shot if anyone is interested?
cheers
James

Beautiful!
-
Splendid, the shop,especially. ;D
-
Shiny, Bibbly san.
-
Nice. Printers are great for scenery pieces like that. I created a fairly nice bookshelf from mine.
-
Dead sexy.
As to what sort of shop... Once you print out some furniture, it'll be a furniture shop, of course. lol
-
Another super BibblyBuild
-
Thanks chaps :)
I think the shop will be another 'combini' type. With the success of the vending machine I think I'll do some shelves next as it'll be a damn sight quicker than making them properly (and I know how lazy I can be lol ).

Please do.

Dealing with a stack of shelves to make enough for a supermarket is what has stopped me from making a start on the Hannah Montana project.
I am too damn lazy to do it too.
;)
If they come out half as good as that vending machine they will be genius.
8) 8)

Both are delightful. 8)
The shop front shouts Estate Agency to me. I can picture display boards in the window, desks inside, staff on the phone doing the hard sell, the proprietor sat at the back ..... (I'll stop before getting too carried away :D)

Piccies later, got one printed yesterday ;)

Right then, finished painting a cast of the vending machine. First two piccies for show and the second two for scale. The second two also have the glass in the front which I forgot on the first two ::)

Lovely Jibbly!

You didn't think of pre-stacking the shelves with goodies and print it off that way? I guess the goods are pretty easy to make to go on the shelves though.
Picture of the vending machine looks great :)

Thanks chaps :)

It would be quicker for me to do it by hand (I'm still not great with 3d drawing yet) and there would be an element of randomness there that wouldn't be apparent in the 3d work without a lot of effort.

Nice work James. Now stop working on this project, as it may distract me from my current painting workload :)

I just went through the whole tread...
OMG!!! I think I'm falling in love... :-* lol
Your skills are astonishing, jimbibbly, and your job is excellent... as always :D

I was waiting for this one to come back so as not to play the necromancer by commenting. :D Great stuff! Striking a very nice balance between urban grit and cyberpunk sleek IMO. :)
-
Thanks again gents :)
I've been working on a helipad with some fibre optics but it didn't quite work out the way I wanted it to :?
Back to the drawing board/computer screen.
cheers
James
-
Marvellous thread - really tip-top stuff.
-
Thanks :)
Got the helipad sorted. I've resorted to using my Japanese LEDs (which to be honest I should've done in the first place) but I'm only using eight instead of the intended 16. Trouble is, I've got to build a building that it sits on comfortably ::) lol
The chopper is a toy one and needs a few screw holes and seems filling before it gets a business moguls livery on it (as of yet to be decided). There will also be fine wire going through the small sticky out bits which will make sense when it's done.

BTW, seen these?

Not Akira, but I think Ghost in a Shell is fantastic for inspiration :)

I've saved most of the those pictures now, thanks for the link 8)
I'm using a lot of near future anime for inspiration - Patlabor, Bubblegum Crisis, Cyber City Oedo 808, Ghost in the Shell to name but a few :)

I've been meaning to watch a few of those while I work, I've seen all of Ghost I think but none of the others, any recomendations? :D
-
Great to see this moving along, lovely work
-
Tank Police is fun but watch the later episodes. Bubblegum Crisis is good for this sort of project. The Patlabor series is good, if a bit dry sometimes (if you can find 'The Seven Days of Fire' episode with subtitles then that's good for a laugh).
I'll think of some others later and post them up.
cheers
James
-
Pretty sure I've seen all those ('cept Tank Police, but that's because I have all the Shirow comics and just read 'em instead) and will +1. They're all a bit dated at this point, being 80's - 90's sci-fi, but Tank Police is a riot, Bubblegum Crisis is good fun, and Patlabor IS dry, but has pretty decent characters.
Also maybe Armitage for another near-future anime of the same era?
-
Never heard of Armitage mate, I'll have a shufty for it when I get home.
I don't mind the dated appearance, in fact I prefer it. Eighties style Neo Tokyo :D
cheers
James
-

It isn't THAT great, IMHO. Decent enough animation, but make sure you get a subtitled version. All dubs I've seen so far of it were atrocious. A mix of Blade Runner and Total Recall, storywise, not the greatest of plots but not too drawn-out.
-
I don't mind the dated appearance, in fact I prefer it. Eighties style Neo Tokyo :D
Agreed there. I only read Neuromancer etc. last year and man do I feel like I missed out on that whole "era" of cyberpunk. Kinda strange what with most of the tech being real today.
-
Marking this so i can keep track of it. :)

It's technically called Armitage III, if I recall correctly. Mid-90's cyberpunk anime at it's finest. lol
Borrows a lot from Blade Runner, I think? been a long time since I've seen it.
Tell the truth, I sure haven't watched much anime in the past few years. Not really a fan of the "schoolkids slice of life"/Bad Gainax ripoffs/moe stuff that seems to be dominating everything at the moment. There's still decent stuff buried deep in the morass, but it's just not worth my time trying to dig for it and Satoshi Kon is gone now anyway :'( :'( :'(
-

Of all the possible futures predicted by sci-fi from the 40's through the 90's, it's heartbreaking that the bleak cynicism of cyberpunk was the genre which proved most accurate in its predictions.
-
For anyone wanting to watch Armitage, track down the tv episodes rather than the movie as they include some great extra scenes including one of my favourite sci-if quotes "if humans don't want me then why did they make me?"
-
There's a sequel movie called "Armitage: Dual Matrix", but it's kind of the very essence of mediocrity, so I don't recommend it. It was made over a decade later (early 00s, IIRC) when more minimalist animation styles were becoming popular and hand-drawn animation was proper giving way to digital drawing, and as a result has a very spartan aesthetic. This combined with a plot where an insufficient amount of stuff happens at a somewhat drawn out pace (and which abandons having actual themes in favor of a shallow generic action story) makes it very bland. It's like the anime movie equivalent of eating a rice cake.
There was a Total Recall TV show in the late 90s that ran for 1 or 2 seasons. Supposedly set in the same world as the Arnie movie, but decades later. Took a lot more cues from Blade Runner and Asimov's "Caves of Steel" than Total Recall though. I remember enjoying it at the time, but haven't seen it since, so who knows if it holds up. Dunno if it's even available to watch in any form now. I know they released the pilot on DVD way back when, but not the rest of the series. Dunno about streaming.
-
And you've just reminded me of 'Serial Experiments Lain' for some reason which I will dig out and watch again.
-
Metal Skin Panic was another one and there were two more I was trying to remember o_o
cheers
James
-

I suppose it beats aliens dropping an asteroid on Rio de Janeiro followed by interstellar war under an ultra-militarist world government, but yeah, I would have to agree.
-
Yeah. There's obviously lots of individually worse stories as well as individually positive cyberpunk stories, but as an entire genre, cyberpunk is frankly very negative, far more so on average than sci-fi genres usually are.
-
I wouldn't say it's the most accurate. I think post-cyberpunk (like Ghost in the Shell) is better in that regard, but that's kind of cheating as it's been even less time since that genre began.
TBH, I don't think the bleakness of cyberpunk is accurate at all. People see the world as worse than it really is, compared to the past, because all our media loves to play up negatives. Every era has it's own problems-in-progress that are inflated in the mind via immediacy, but in a lot of ways the modern world is overall a flat out better place to be than it was decades ago.
In fact the only thing I can say is really accurate about cyberpunk is the general idea the information technologies would be the most notable area of advancement, rather than, say, transportation technologies. That, and the general assumption that future culture would change in ways that contemporary readers would find distressingly alienating, rather than familiar-feeling derivations of their own culture (note that this not the same as saying culture would degrade, merely that future shock would loom over any intellectually honest attempt at looking forward). But as far as the future being dark and dystopian... no.
But then anticipating social/cultural changes is one of the things science fiction has always had the most difficulty with, IMO (apart from really blanket stuff, like "there will be less mainstream racism").
-
I think Cyberpunk is about individualism, opportunism, capitalism, extreme reliance on technology (almost enslaving us), the power of choice (with the false idea that you can influence big corps), a sad acceptance of nature being screwed. So from my -current- point of view that is dark and dystopian.
-
Absolutely fantastic work here, Jim. I went through all the pages and you did it better and better. Really hope you'll find the time to finish this great gaming table.
:-*

It's more than just the general idea that information technology would be the most prominent form of technological advancement, but also that corporations will continue to rise and dominate, often at the expense of civil government, the social contract will fray, and that those information technologies will be used to exert stricter and tighter controls on everyday populations.
For example, metric-based predictive behavioural software is very cyberpunk, and the use of such software to increase control by corporations or governments, especially under the guise of it being a positive, is extremely cyberpunk. Things like "You will get a lower assurance rate if you put this tracking device in your car to monitor your driving habits. And if you don't like that well, what have you got to hide then, citizen?" are - to me anyway - so cyberpunk it hurts.
But in any case, I think I should stop there. Not because I should avoid politics (which is where this is going) so much as the fact that this is Jim's thread for Jim's stuff.
-

That does really work for the setting!
Are those signs ever so slightly weathered or am I literally grasping at shadows?

They've had some ink stains applied but the arc of the street lights does throw some shadow at the top.

That is cool. Is there nothing you can't do? It's annoying! lol
I take it the van was hollow in the main anyway and you just cut away locally to fit? Otherwise that is some undertaking for a block of resin. It's quite an undertaking anyway. Nice work.

Thanks muchly chaps :)
Been playing with this project off and on and I've almost completed a little construction site (it saves me having to make another building ;D ).
The little grey thing in the middle is the start of a mini digger. It's been printed at work but is only a test to get the sizes right for the bits, still got the arm, controls and the seat to do.

Ambitious as always! Looking forwards to seeing the subway station, those in particular fit the whole near future urban setting. (though I do not recall any subways in Akira)

I don't think there were but this is turning into more of a generic manga/anime project because apart from the bike clashes and the riots there's not much else that could be wargamed lol

I did start on a bike but it got sidetracked (as most things do) but I've still got the file so will get back to it at some point :)
In other news, I made a train and a half built subway station ::)
I sometimes think this project might never end...
Anyway, onto some photos. The train is a solid block clad with lasered acrylic sides and then duely sprayed. The station itself is all acrylic so far that has also been sprayed. They still need weathering and details but I think the effect works quite well. The train isn't a specific one but has many generic Japanese features (just search for Japanese trains on google and you'll see what I mean).

The train has its bogies to do and is sitting a little high. The grey circles are for the columns and the ceiling will be lit which should hopefully produce some good photos. I'll also do a blank side that will 'block off' the platform end.
cheers

You've out done yourself big chap! :o Brilliant stuff! :-* Very Matrix-y!
With all this weighty acrylic are you not going to need a lorry to transport it anywhere?

Very well done James 8) :-*

Thanks gents :)
How are the Japanese trains for graffiti?
It's virtually none existent but as this is a slightly more distopian version there will be more dirt and graffiti.
How much storage do you have?! (You don't have a shed/garage, right?)
Not enough...
With all this weighty acrylic are you not going to need a lorry to transport it anywhere?
Doesn't weigh that much to be honest.

Looks flipping sweet mate! :-* :-*

*better get back to work and daddy land.
-
That's cool ;D
-
Hey Jim, how did you "spray" the platform so crisply and exact? Using Tamiya tape? Gorgeous work, mate ... :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
Matt, come dack from daddy land soon, you are missed 8)
Hey Jim, how did you "spray" the platform so crisply and exact? Using Tamiya tape? Gorgeous work, mate ... :-*
Yup, it's the stuff I showed you when you came round. The score lines help as they guide the scalpel and I try to re-use as much as possible. The sprays are hobby sprays but done in light coats so it doesn't go underneath the masking.
cheers
James

I like that train. A lot. I'd have thought that a lot of the stuff you've made from this setting would have an interest to customers? There's not much out there for this genre (present, near future, etc) that is of that quality. Knights of Dice is probably the best I've seen personally.

Nice work James. That station is perfect :)

Beautiful station (already) and a train to go with it! :-*
I take it that the train will have working headlights as well? o_o
-
Ye gods that train and station are amazing! Brilliant stuff.
-
Sweet as mate 8)
-
Fabulous train!
Now I'm going back through the rest of this thread and being repeatedly impressed. Awesome work.

Thanks for the encouragement gents, keeps a chap going :)
Regarding the bikes, thanks for the continued ideas but I think I'm sorted :)

Weathered the train and might get to do the station later today. There's still a few little picture elements to go on (destination sign etc) and I'll probably have a look at the undercarriage at work this week.

Beautiful project, and one close to my heart! I notice that when you started this thread you mentioned putting these buildings on your catalogue. Did I miss the boat?
-
Great weathering James - almost looks real :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
I notice that when you started this thread you mentioned putting these buildings on your catalogue. Did I miss the boat?
No you didn't. That was the intention but it fell by the wayside and will unfortunately remain so for the foreseeable future.
I weathered the station as well today and had a play around with some figures to get a feel for it. The weathering might look a little over done (Japanese stations are very clean apart from the years ingrained grime from the trains themselves) but when the overhead lights are in it should look ok.
They haven't been edited or cropped or anything as I'm now weathering the neffs :)

Nice work James. I was wondering if you were going to add schoolgirls for that essential manga look :)
-
That is more like it! I loved the clean scene, but this fits Akira much better. And you motivated me to continue working on a Cyberpunk building, so thanks man 8)
-
Nice work, mate.
8) 8)
A sub-level on the Akira board, I take it?
-
Looks great, can't wait to see it all together as one game ;D
-
Nice work James. I was wondering if you were going to add schoolgirls for that essential manga look :)
I dunno, they have more of a St. Trinian's look to me.
-
Thank you kindly chaps :)
And you motivated me to continue working on a Cyberpunk building, so thanks man 8)
Glad to help :D
A sub-level on the Akira board, I take it?
That's the idea, yes. The intention is (for the moment) three foot square above and below ground. I've got a good idea what to do for the rest of the underground but we'll see how it pans out.
I had a play around with some station lighting earlier before it goes in the cupboard for a couple of weeks and I'm quite pleased with the result. Only one photo for now but there will be more when it comesout again.

Looks the biz! :-* :-*
.....but how playable is that? You've got the figs hemmed in on all sides if you have your ceiling in place. How will this sit on your board? I'm struggling to understand how this all sets out! I ask because I'm looking to steal ideas get inspiration. :) ;)

I admit that I am totally off Manga, although I know Akira, but I love subways! This is a superb photo of an even better project of yours - very well done!
-
The lighting is amazing love all the different shadows and bright spots you have created, very realistic :-* :-* :-*
-
Awesome!
Now needs only an escalator (a working one, of course ;) ) :D
-
Love the train and station James :-* :-*
Have to be honest though, am not keen on the thick bases for the minis - sorry :'( :)
-
very very nice indeed . The lighting is stunning :-*
-
Many thanks for the replies gents :)
Are those led strips?
Yup, and plenty of them. I'll be putting a frosted sheet of acrylic between them and the ceiling to tone it down a bit as there's only about a third done at the moment.
but how playable is that? You've got the figs hemmed in on all sides if you have your ceiling in place. How will this sit on your board? I'm struggling to understand how this all sets out! I ask because I'm looking to steal ideas get inspiration. :) ;)
The ceiling is removable and I'm tempted to have it next to the actual board. It's still in the 'design' phase at the moment ;)
Have to be honest though, am not keen on the thick bases for the minis - sorry :'( :)
All the bases are 2mm thick but a few have an extra pavement layer which is what you can see the back of.
cheers
James
-
A project like this would really benefit from clear plastic bases though. ;)
This aside, the picture with the lights on made it look like a real place. :o 8)
-
Good grief, I've seen
some tonnes of cool stuff from you Jame, but this takes the cake :o :o :o
-
That's utterly brilliant
-
Thanks again chaps :)
Got a mech painted over the past few days. A simple paint scheme but it looks OK. I forgot to paint the lenses when taking the scenic shots but I've done them now and they can be seen in the bottom picture. I honestly can't remember which range it''s from as I got it from the bazaar a while back :?
I think the game story for it will be that it's a prime piece of military hardware that's been hacked by ne'er do wells and is now under their control. It'll be something to go up against the the police mech :)

That looks cracking mate! I love the red lenses! :-*
Is the big beastie not a Micropanzer one?
-
That's cracking!
-
Interesting sculpt. It De s heavy and clumsy but also agile. Hmmm. Fits the asian anime look well too. Paintjob is ace!!
-
Thanks gents and thanks for identifying it :)
Interesting sculpt. It De s heavy and clumsy but also agile.
Yeah, I wasn't quite sure when putting it together as I think the 'body' needs to be forward a bit so the centre of gravity is more central but it's growing on me :)
cheers
James
-
That looks a great fit for anime gaming, great paint job
-
Nice to see the micropanzer beasty painted up. Works very nicely for 28mm! And a steal to at that price I think. There should be one on its way to me as we speak.
-
Would it's bigger brother not make a really cool oversized/overgunned police robot? Kind of a tank/police horse? Imagine that charging down football supporters! :o

Shit, that's ridiculous lol
I have got a nice four legged one that I'll be doing at some point though.

Funny, I was considering doing that one up in "swat" style myself.
I might be working on some variants of the AH-AW soon, any requests? :D
-
When I first saw it I did think Robocop (2? It was a long time ago!)
-
I have a couple of those that I bought from Micropanzer a few years ago before they stopped selling them. Good to see them back up for sale. I think I have the ones that are slightly bigger than a 28mm person. They look great.
-
Smashing paintjob. :)
-
really a gorgeous model and the painting is outstanding :-*
-
Were can you order the figures from Micropanzer?
-
Dunno mate, I think they are oop. Got mine from the bazaar.
Thanks everyone for the continued praise 8)
cheers
James
-
Dunno mate, I think they are oop. Got mine from the bazaar.

Nope, Jason is still doing business, though a bit lower key these days I believe. If there are different sizes of the walkers I don't know if he still does both, but it's well worth asking. His website could use a overhaul but http://www.micropanzer.com/ is still active. the big walker is actually on sale right now.
-
Aha! There we go then :)
cheers
James
-
Taking a closer look I only now realise that line has 2 sizes of chicken walkers. The one Jim has painted above would be the "Amakudari Strider"
-
Being ex-mil machine it must beat the living **** out of that Police bot? :)
Wonderful painting on it 8)
-
Nice work James ... yet again :)
