Title: Me, myself and I in the Dark Continent - new update after 5 years...
Post by: Dr. Moebius on July 12, 2013, 10:01:34 PM
Hello everyone,

as this is my first post ever in this forum I just like to introduce myself very quick. My name is Dr. Moebius (or Alex in the real world, or Alexander as my mum is calling me).

In times when everyone around me (my mates) seems to paint Vikings, Normans, Irish etc. and playing SAGA I´ve got a Darkest Africa backflash for myself.

A few month ago I got the Death in the Dark Continent rules in my hands and decided to give it a go. Here is what I managed to paint so far. My Force Publique is now nearly complete ( I will do some more baggage and wound markers in the future). I have plans (and miniatures obviously) for a lot of factions I like to paint in the next years. My rough plan is to do the Congo Arabs/Manyema next and then followed by an Azande force.

Hopefully you will enjoy the pics - and let me say that I have done the pics with a mobile phone because I do not have a proper camera (and I´m a bad photographer as well).

Cheers
Dr. Moebius

Three stands of Ruga which I will use as Swahili or Arabised Manyema followers for my Arabs:

Top job indeed. I also like the three figure stands, which are a welcome change of pace from singly based miniatures and work as mini-dioramas.

Again many, many thanks to you all.
You all really made my day.

On the weekend I managed to paint some more stuff and I hope I can post some more of my DITDC project in the next days. I have to finish the multi bases for the next two Ruga/Manyema stands bringing the unit to five in total.

I've also started with two bases of Gongo Lutetes Tetela warriors which I will use as tribal allies for my Force Publique. I plan to have eight bases in total of these notorious canibals.
Choice of miniatures and painting is a little bit tricky on this as it is hard to find in depth information of these guys. Even Mr. Peers says not much about them in the foundry book.

The overall plan is to play a campain of the Force Publique Arab war once I finished all the models for both sides. I have read lots of this conflict and it fascinated me from the very beginnig.

Hopefully I will stick to it as I'm interested in many different miniatures and gaming systems.

Cheers
Dr. Moebius

Thank you Hu Rhu,

yes I will use them for Chris Peers´ Death in the dark continent (DITDK). One great thing about the rules is that you field your miniatures on multibases of 60mm frontage size. Depth is not that important so I decided to go for 40mm for the depth of the bases (though 30mm is recommended in the rules).

It is really fun to create these little dioramas and it takes a while to decide where to place those painted heroes.
That is the same reason why I´m really looking forward to do a Horde of the Things army in 28mm.

Cheers

Dr. M, a question, sir.  Perhaps others are familiar with it so didn't notice, but on your casualty marker you have created a space for a die.  I'm assuming this is "free" so you can leave the die up as needed with how ever many pips are called for.  Is this from the rules or your own invention or some other source?  Where ever it is from, I plan to steal the idea.  ;)

And what everyone else said, by the way, very nice.

Hello FifteensAway,

the idea with the loose die on the marker is not my idea. You can find it on several blogs, Roundwoods World for example, a fantastic blog about World War One wargaming. There you can find great wound markers that Sydney has done using the same principle.

I've done this one as a first try but I will go a different way with further markers. The reason is that the die on the base is not really cool looking.
The maximum pips you can get in DITDC is five per unit. So I will go for putting one dead miniature on a 30mm round base, some markers with two on a larger round base and so on.
That will look more bloody and will help the look of the game.

I made use of Wargames Foundry's offer that you will get a blister for free when you buy three times the same blister. That brought me 4 bisters of african casualties (32 minis in total). Now I can go crazy ;D by producing pips that will look great in the game.
I have also plans for using severed heads on poles, piles of skulls etc. so that will bring me a nice collection of pips that fit the feeling of the game.

Cheers

More Africa,

as I said a few days ago I will post more of my stuff. Well, will do so now.

I finished two more bases of Ruga-Rugas bringing the unit now to five in total:

I also started with the first two bases of the Tetela warriors who will serve as allies for my Force Publique army.
Maybe some day this will be getting an complete Tetela army itself. The pics are still WIP as I need to finish the bases and need matt varnish.

Further investigation told me that they had white and also red ocre warpaint. I started with white, maybe will try with white and red with the next bases. For the shields I chose the typical basket work shields that are typical for the congo.

Will do more of these, an some musket armed bases, later.

Was also playing with the command base for my Congo Arabs the last day.
The guy in the middle is Sefu (the nephew of the notorious Tippu Tip). He will be the chief of my Arabs.
He will be protected by two guards and also has his personal sunshade bearer with him.

The sunshade bearer is converted (see below).

And the last for tonight is a WIP of:

Yusef bin Ibn Hamid, also known as "Big Yusef". He will be the leader of the Ruga/Manyema unit.
As the latest fashion for Congo-Arabs he has a henna coloured beard.

The funny thing on Big Yusef is that he is arachnophobic, a bloody problem for a bandit leader in the heart of Africa!
Though he´s also very famous for killing twelve Banga warriors with his hands in a fight some months ago. It was the same fight that costs him his left eye (Banga arrow!)

Still in the very beginning of painting him but already lots of fun.

Cheers
Dr. Moebius

Though hope you don't mind some small criticism, I think you need a better flat varnish, some of them are looking a bit glossy.

Thanks for this Alex. That's really great that this is getting one of your current favorit threads. Will do my best to keep it up to date with new painted miniatures.

I'm always very open for feedback.
I've thought about that glossy thing myself. The Force Publique miniatures look more glossy than in reality to be honest. Though they are not that matt I like them to be.
The problem is that they were already varnished when I painted them again, so I have to live with that I think. The Tetela are still WIP, so they won't look glossy (hopefully) after getting their matt varnish anymore.

Normally I use Marabu gloss varnish done with a brush. The second step (after waiting for at least 24 hours) is then to spray Army Painter matt varnish. For the complete new painted miniatures this works, but it had not really worked with the already painted Force Publique.

Any advice on how I can get better results with a real matt varnish is much appreciated.

Cheers

Thanks for the useful link Alex.

Mmmhh, maybe it is the Marabu gloss varnish?
Or do I use too much of the Army Painter spray in one go?

Have to check this again.

I guess you need some more layers of matt varnish to cover the gloss layer. I'm using the spray version of Army Painter and spraying my figures at least three times. One layer would be never enough.

I've only just found this thread, but am really impressed with your figures.  Wow!  Nice basing as well, very atmospheric paint jobs.  Good work all round.

I don't know if you're in the UK, but we are having a Death in the Dark Continent day in Nottingham on the 19th November:
http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=5511
There are still a few places available.

On the varnish issue, the flattest finish I've found so far is Testor's Dullcote; however, I found the Army Painter Matt Varnish was actually better on my Azande tribesmen, as it wasn't completely matt.  I though this looked better on the skin.

Hi James,

thanks a lot for this. I've already seen the info about the africa day on the northstar news.
Would be great to join you guys in Notts though this is sadly to expensive for me to travel from Germany to Birmingham airport, take a taxi to Nottingham, book a hotel etc.
Maybe next time. I'm looking forward to see some nice pictures of that day.

I've also seen your Azande, very inspiring work and a beautifull paint job. One day we might have a great game and some pints together  :)

And I absolutely agree that it sometimes look better to have not a very matt finish for african miniatures, though still trying to achieve better results with my finish.

Superb. The bright stripes against the white tunics (?) really sets off the figures. Is the clothing historically accurate or is that your interpretation? Apologies I'm not being picky but I know next to nothing about this period or region so its curious interest.

Very impressive stuff!!  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

I still have the old problem of deciding whether to base DA mini's on single bases or to go for multiple basing.

I suppose you could get away with both using Death in the Dark Continent but you would lack the aesthetic that you have managed to capture so well with your collection.

Darrell.

Thanks for your comment.
It is a little bit of both. Historical reports say that the Arab influenced people wore mostly white tunics with white and or cloured turban or red fez. The had also some coloured fabrics with stripes etc.
So they should be historically correct with a little bit of my own interpretation.

More Africa,

as I said a few days ago I will post more of my stuff. Well, will do so now.

I finished two more bases of Ruga-Rugas bringing the unit now to five in total:

Those are absolutely 1st class - well done sir!!

Hello Gentlemen,

I´m sorry but real life was very busy in the last weeks and so my Death in the Dark Continent project suffered.

The only little progress that I made is that I finished "Sefu" (Chief for my Congo Arabs). I´ve also managed to start with the three other miniatures on his base though I can´t make any promises when the complete base will be finished.

OK, hope you enjoy Sefu until I will post the complete base:

Hello Gentlemen

Today I have my update day on LAF. Kids have their after-lunch nap and Madame Moebius is out for shopping. Brilliant!

I´ve not managed to finish Sefus base but will show you the WIP. Also have pics of the finished Tetela warriors bases (matt varnish and bases finished).

Some weekends ago I visited the Crisis wargames show in Antwerp. Sometimes it is really funny, you have your pockets full of money and in then end it is the 10 € deal that makes your day.

I bought lots of Foundry bits from Dave T. who was there again with his Perry Miniatures stuff. The great thing was that I found a fist full of severed african heads on stakes. This bit is normally in a Foundry Force Publique blister but only one time. BINGO!
I know that sounds a little bit strange to be happy about a fist full of severed heads on stakes but this will make perfect wound markers for this project.  ;D

O.K. will go on with this project and hope to keep it up to date in the next month.

Cheers

Hello dear Gentlemen,

tonight I finished the command base with Sefu and his retinue. It took far too long for my taste.
So my plan for 2014 is to minimum paint one base per month for my death in the dark continent project. That will end the year with 12 more bases. Not too much but still progress for painting my Darkest Africa collection. We will see, maybe I will end up with more.

Hope you like the command base for my Congo Arab army.

Hello Gentleman,

with this post I just want to make a historical correction and give a little information about a purchase I made.

I´ve re read the book "The African Wars" by Chris Peers (published by Pen & Sword) a few days ago.
A few month ago I made a mistake by saying that Sefu is the nephew of Tippu Tip.

That´s not correct.
Sefu was the son of Tippu Tip and Rashid was the nephew of Tippu Tip. Just for the papers :-)

On page 147 in the book it says that Dhanis force had a single 75mm Krupp field gun.
Knowing that I like to replace the little gun in my collection with an appropriate model for my Force Publique collection.

I´ve ordered this beauty from Askari Miniatures a few days ago (along with some pack mules to carry it through the jungle)

http://www.askari-minis.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23_45&products_id=90&zenid=1je339vc1ut06ivi4id5gq0b27 (http://www.askari-minis.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23_45&products_id=90&zenid=1je339vc1ut06ivi4id5gq0b27)

I´m really looking forward to paint more stuff for the Force Publique as well in the next coming months.

Cheers

as requested here some group shots. I tried my best  :?

Force Publique so far

Still to do:
wound markers, some more baggage (mules), 75mm Krupp mountain gun, maybe a third Askari company, and of course more Tetela.

Title: Re: Me, myself and I in the Dark Continent - Update June 2015 - Wangwana
Post by: Dr. Moebius on June 26, 2015, 07:47:21 PM
Hello,

for a long time this project was on hold. A few days ago I managed to paint up some more Wangwana for the Arab army.
Rather than fix them on multi bases I tried something new.

They are all on 5 cent coins and I build a multibase for them by using the usual 40x60mm base. I made use of neodyn magnets that will keep them in place once put on the base. So I can use the miniatures for DitdC and skirmishing systems as well.

I need to get back into my "normal" painting mojo as I think the paint job on them is not that crisp as for the other miniatures I have done for this project. Anyway - some new additions to go further with it.

I like the bases too.
I am going to do something similar with my Melniboneans (when I get around to them, that is...) as I want to be able to use them for skirmish as well as WFB3rd.
You should have seen the kerfuffle on the Oldhammer forum at the mention of cutting their base tabs off in order to fix them to washers... ;)

Hello,

for a long time this project was on hold. A few days ago I managed to paint up some more Wangwana

And really lovely they are too  :-* :-* :-*

Rather than fix them on multi bases I tried something new.

I had much the same problem with deciding about how to base my NWF and Indian Mutiny collection. At present all my Artizan NWF stuff is based on 25mm circles as it's going to be used for skirmish gaming. The regimental basing will come when the Perry's release their plastic box set and yes this is going to leave me with at least four NWF armies!!  8) 8) 8) 8)

My Indian Mutiny stuff will have he to be based on 18mm washers and fitted into sabot bases. I just don't have the heart (or the strength!) to go through it all again!  lol

Darrell.

Nice solution with the bases too. I've started to do a very similar thing with my medieval figures.

Just as well I haven't put any of my JD stuff up there on their resin bases...  ;)

Aaah the great debate, i've gone through a personal transformation of sorts, having ''grown up'' on slotta bases I never cared so much for miniatures that didn't have them.

Then I got out of GW and into various other ranges, nowadays I like my basing to be consistent so I can reuse miniatures for multiple systems and I find slotta bases to be off putting as they end up towering over the rest.

''You should have seen the kerfuffle on the Oldhammer forum at the mention of cutting their base tabs off in order to fix them to washers...''

Oldhammer is the exception though, cutting off the bases of old miniatures...sickening twisted stuff.

As for the stuff on display, it's quite inspiring I hope to have my colonial stuff similarly based so I can use it for battles and skirmish...if only I could find a decent sand/texture, the stuff I use makes my miniatures look like they're fighting in a quarry!

Hello again,

it´s been more than five years since I have updated this topic. That´s a long long time. Though I think it is worth to keep this going again.
I have been working on this project during these five years though not very much to be honest. But 2021 sound like a good year to go back to my African adventures.

I have a new way in basing my miniatures and a new unit of Congo Arabs as wll. And there is plenty of stuff on my workbench.

Please have a look on my blog to see more pictures http://moebiusminiaturemania.blogspot.com/ (http://moebiusminiaturemania.blogspot.com/)

Thank you all for your kind comments.

I have spend the last few days to paint more Arabs and made quite a lot of pictures of the collection with scenery shots as well.

Allied tribes have reported a major Arab attack on an Force Publique outpost in the near future...

The Congo Arab force of Sheik Sefu so far. I've managed to add 8 new bases to the force.
Plenty more will be needed. 4 bases of Balushi coming next.

No,  he is just out of the blister from Foundry Askaris Casualties. I have added the arrow and put the miniature next to the dead tree. That's it.
