Back from the annual holiday in the West of Britannia (where bronzing oil was essential) The house of Malamutius Calvus has invested in its first Gladiator, Astinax the Myrmillo:

Astinax is a 40mm Battle Honours figure and will soon be competing in the arena against Gladiators from the House of Bibbles The Flos using Furt's new Blood on the Sands rules. An AAR of our first encounter will follow soon. :)
-
Oow that's nice!

Is this for your wife to play with? Ace paintjob Nikolus ;)

Nice work, sir.
Love the shield.
:-*
....the House of Bibbles The Flos
lol
That sounds pretty scary to me, like a Roman knocking shop or something.
::)
-
Lovely! I always thought Battle Honours' gladiators looked a little skinny and stretched but that myrmillo looks the business :-*
Particularly nice shield 8)

Excellent painting ...... I'm very impressed by the number of projects that you and JimBob are involved in at the mo......
-
Nicely done. :D
40mm though? Not try to compensate for something are you... lol
-
Awesome paint job Malamutius! Waiting for the AAR.
Although I always liked Gladiators I thought Gladiator fighting must be pretty boring. But with the rules of Furt it seems I might be wrong.

Bibbles the Flos ???
Peachy mate, just peachy :-*

Great stuff Nick - Astinax is special - he has a nice lunging pose for sure. I had never even seen 40mm Battle Honours gladiators before you too. :-*
Looking forward to the AAR between the Houses of Bibbles The Flos (how sweet :D) and Malamutius Calvus (I can't believe you actually kept that name for yourself lol).
I'd love to see Bibbles' man, so I may set the odds.

He doesn't even have a shield. It won't be much of a contest.
First blood to the Ludus Malamutius. lol

nice work, Nick, especially on the skin. Hope your ludus will be getting some more gladiators, so keep it coming :)

These are the Trident Designs figures, which were sold by Battle Honours and are now sold by Old Glory 15s USA. I got mine at Salute about ten years ago. Just started painting them now lol

Introducing Nisus the Retiarius.
Sold into slavery in Hispania Nisus has mastered the net and trident at the Ludus of Malamutius Calvus. He faces his first true test tomorrow night in the arena against gladiators from the houses of Bibbles the Flos and Medicus Mortem.

Beautiful and very dangerous looking. I feel for the poor fellow facing him.
I do hope he doesn't trip on his own net though. :o
These minis (or not so minis) have come up a treat Nick. Your game is going to look good. :)

Looking good Nick. :D

Setting aside the two pages of deflowering poor Bibbly, that's one stonking paintjob Mammy! I look forward to the whole arena :)
-
Introducing Nisus the Retiarius.
And I rudely forgot to say what a stunning looking fella he is.
Scary bugger, all right!
Nice work, Malamutius.
:-*
-
Bloody Retiarius; no wonder thay weren't liked!! ;)
Top work chap
-
Another recruit for the Ludus of Malamutius; Pernix the Thraex.
Captured in Gaul and condemned to death in the arena, Pernix is a Damnatio ad Gladium. He cannot surrender and if he asks for Missio he will be executed immediately. He has nothing to lose in the arena.....

My money is on the Thracian.... :D
Some new blood has recently arrived at the docks, but the buggers from Customs want their pound of flesh too before they will hand them over.
:-[
Picking them up tomorrow.
You just let me know if you are in urgent need of any new stock.
;)
-
Love the Thraex...is he a 54mm? (I forgot what scale you're doing). If he's a 28mm, who is he from? He's lovely.
-

He is awesome Nick and a dangerous man to boot! :-*
The ludus of Malamutius Calvus grows steadily...
@Elbows - I believe they are 40mm mate, an odd scale , but some very nice figures.
-
@Elbows - I believe they are 40mm mate, an odd scale , but some very nice figures.
Frank is correct. He is 40mm Battle Honours/Trident Designs now only available in the States via OG15s. It is an odd scale, but seems appropriate for single figure games. You don't need to amass too many although we are forced to do some conversions to flesh out some of the more exotic classes.
My ludus champion is up for painting next, my favourite figure from the range. :)
-
Gotcha. I love the post, so had he been 28mm, I'd have to scoop him up!
-
Introducing Lupus the Myrmillo.
A Judean slave who has shown much skill and promise for the Ludus of Malamutius Calvus.
Through dedicated training in the disciplines of the sword and shield he has already reached a prowess level of five, but is yet to be tested in the arena....

I do believe there is a ship sailing to the frozen north carrying slaves bound for the house of the Viking. ;)
-
He is a triumph Nick - beautifully done. :-*
The helmet detail is exceptional and the stance is great. Painted, these 40mm figures look brilliant.
Through dedicated training in the disciplines of the sword and shield he has already reached a prowess level of five, but is yet to be tested in the arena....
Don't count your chickens (sacred or not) yet mate. I had a Prowess 5 Murmillo, killed by an upstart Hoplomachus who scored a lucky strike on his shield arm, causing him to drop his shield. The rest was history...
-
Thanks Frank.
I've really enjoyed painting these. More slaves are arriving shortly and I will be doing a few conversions to create some more exotic classes.
-
(As requested) loverly mate ;)

I'm glad you know where I'm going with thi as I seem to be making it up as I go along. lol
What do you think I'm going to do, I'm intrigued to know?
-
Well, to be honest, I thought you were going for one of Furt's more 'exotic' classes and making yourself an Arbelas using the 'cheesecutter' gladi in this pack:
http://oldglory15s.com/Maximus-Bullshead-and-Classic-Gladiators-GLAD5.htm
Maybe I was jumping the gun, but when you said you wanted him, that is what I thought.
Arbelas:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbelas
Too much thinking, maybe..... ::)
-
Arh yes, the Arbelus. He is destined for the Ludus as is with no conversion required.
I have a two sword wielding character in mind based on a certain TV series. Furt knows which one I favour. ;) :D
-

Arbelus: That certainly works for me.
:D
As for two-swords: Sorry about that, mate, but that is a figure (and I dare say the same character from a certain tv series has the same effect as the memories I am thinking of...) that I felt I had to have, as I may not get another chance to make the perfect representation of the character I have in mind.
-
All this talk of conversions is very intriguing - looking forward to see what you gents come up with.
So the Maximus figure will be used as a Dimachaerus?
Nick has revealed his passion for a certain style of gladiator to me, which will hopefully appear in the next rules update.
-
I saw a great illustration in Nossov's book on his take on the Dimachaerus...seems to make sense. I'll see if I can find it online.
-

No worries, I'm going to use a different donor to make up a Dimatwoswords, possibly the Maxiimus figures.

Any chance for a group shot of what you have so far good Sir?

That arena is pretty damn good too.
I think Bibbles need to have a PM shot his way.

Ave Malamutius calvus, lanista superius! :D
Damn fine sight, many thanks for the pics. I'll wager my denarii on Lupus' win.

They look so good together like that Nick - bloody brilliant. :-*
All looks great mate... You need some walls though lol
James' arena floors look superb too! The hexes are so perfectly sanded - do you use a robot for that James? ;)
Just a small word of advice from an old lanista to another - don't be so hasty to surround your little arena in a complete wall. It may really change the ease of playing a game and turn it into a chore, plus photographing becomes difficult as well.
I know James is enclosing his, so why don't you experiment with one enclosed and with one at least semi-enclosed.
Just my 2 cents worth gents. Your games look brilliant anyway. :)
-
Now that is some gorgeous stuff right there...sheesh! :-*

I'm not going to put walls on mine for exactly the reasons you mention. I'm keeping it open for playability. Thats why its not covered completely in sand either. I wanted it to have a more stylised board game effect.
-
excellent updates, figures look very effective on the game board

That approach is very much a hit with the ladies.
Or so I have been told.
::)

Bwah! Pfft!
The ludus of Crassus Vikingus will hear of no such nonsense as an arene without walls! 8)
-
great job on them, Nick, everything very crisp and clean, well done!
-
Introducing the Hopplomachus Hector.
Originally from Africanus he was captured in Graece and sold to the house of Malamutius Calvus by the House of Spoons. Unbeknown to the Dominus of the house of Malamutius the Graecian turned out to be a coward. Twice he has entered the arena and twice begged for Missio. Where it not for his demonstration of his skill with the spear and shield during these fights he would surely be resting now in the graveyard of Gladiators.

He is converted from the Myrmillo figure as seen on page one of this thread with the addition of plume and feathers to his helmet made from Greenstuff, Gladius removed and spear hammered flat from brass wire added and a small parma shield from the bits box.
-
Great job :-*

Nice conversion work.
Even his Liberace pom-poms look good.
8)
A coward sold to you by the House of Spoons, eh?
You should be more careful then, shouldn't you?
lol
-
These are very good. :)
-
He is brilliant mate - well done!! Just like a bought one. :-*
Love the conversion and the colors used. It is a very natural pose for the spear lunge too.
Is the parma a 28mm Greek shield or some such? Perfect fit either way.
Coward or not - he looks bloody dangerous.
-
Very nice converting and painting Nicholas :)
Arminius looks forward to breaking his spear a second time - and maybe even dealing the coward a fatal blow...
-
I somehow missed all your recent updates, spanking work Nicky boy 8)

Very nice matey :-*
Although I am disappointed you paint a design on the shield... These are 40mm after all ;D

Jolly nice, you seem to hace forgotten the black tips on the feathers though :)

An extravagant improvement of the original miniature, dominus. Very well done!

Converted from the Mrymillo featured on page 4. His arms have been repositioned and his left arm covered in Green Stuff and the Gladius added.
-
Nicely done, mate!
8)
It is good to see all these conversions going on.
Who needs variety in sculpts when you can convert your own?
:D
At this rate, I think we will eventually have all the armatura covered.
Of course, my Dimmo wont be needing that much armour, coz he is proper 'ard!

Nice stuff Nick. :D

Very nicely converted and painted. His plume is striking.
He looks the part with a great stance too. The ludus of Malamutius Calvus moves into the "exotics"!
Don't forget to "Counter" with him Nick - Counter, Counter, Counter. ;)
-
Great conversion and nice paintwork Malamutius!
He does look a tad top heavy with that socking great lump of bronze (?) on his bonce. Presumably he will incur extra fatigue for such a large helmet (ooer)? ;)
Love the crimson plume. Quite a dandy :)
-
Shiny 8)
Although he does look a bit like a historical police dog handler lol

I'd never had known it was a conversion - very nicely done Nick.
How much greenstuffing did you have to do - just the visor?
-
That is simply splendid. Awesome work.
-
Deadly looking chap that Scorpio! Beautiful work!
-
And it looks even better in the flesh (lead?). Malamute's Ludus is sporting some very fine gladiators, if only they fought as good as they looked lol
-
I really like Scorpio. That is a great conversion. What colors did you use for the bronze? Mine always looks like gold when I paint it. Again great work.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, not something I would do lightly. ;)
However I realised whilst going through my gallery I had not added the remaining members of my Ludus, so for completeness here are the latest two.
Duros The Arbelus: Straight out of the box, no modication other than to replace the cutting blade as it broke when being cleaned up.
