Title: Vikinga Här
Post by: Engel on July 15, 2013, 09:56:49 AM
As you may or may not know I have a sort of Norse fantasy thread over at the fantasy section here but as this is without the fantasy stuff I thought it would be only fitting to post it where this post really belong.
Sorry for the dubbel post.

With the girlfriend away, or maybe more important the 15 month old daughter… I could make a sort of inventory for myself of my Norsemen collection spread out on the floor.

In Hail Caesar terms this will be the following.

1 small size unit of Thralls with javelins
1 standard size unit of Gestir
1 small size unit of villagers with dogs
3 standard size units of Hirdmen
1 small size unit of Hirdmen
1 small size of Varangian Guards
1 small size of Ulfhednar
1 small size of mounted Hirmen
1 standard size of Bondi with bows
2 standard size units of Bondi
1 small size unit of Christian monks trying to spread the word
4 Viking Chieftains or heroes
1 Skald to tell the tales of my heroes.

That is a decently sized raiding party - ready to plunder and steal from those milk-sop English across the Whale Road. :)

This evening we had a clash with my Norsemen. I divided the här into four more or less equal parts and we had a two vs two player game of Hail Caesar.

Great stuff. :) They do look impressive.

My club likes dark age gaming (among other periods) and Warlord Games rules. However, they're a little put off by the sheer size and number of units needed for a 'standard' game of Hail Caesar. Especially with all those 4-deep warbands. Good to see you still had a good game, using 2-deep units, a lot of small units, and about 7 units a side. :) I'll be interested to see how you get on with future games.

Bump... :D

I suddenly felt the urge to paint me some Vikings...

And perfectly enough I found this halfpainted unit of Bondi troops in a box. I have now finished the paintjob and added bases to them.:D

Som new Bondi troops.

I managed to get lots and lots of painting time last weekend, it have unfortunately taken all of this week just to get the time to do the bases...

Here we have a unit of Norse Bondi troops with the addition of some bärsärka type miniatures thrown into the lot.

I quite like what you've done with those archers.

And I almost want to get some, now; can all the sculpts be made into equally nice models, or did you pick the best for your army?

Its about time to make a new army picture of the collection...  :D

http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2016/06/vikinga-har.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2016/06/vikinga-har.html)

In Hail Caesar this would translate roughly to:

5x units of Hirdmen
1 small unit of veteran ex. Varangian Guards
5x units of Bondi
1 small unit of Bondi
1 small unit of Thrals with javelins
1 small unit of Bondi light infantry archers
1 small unit of Drengr skirmishers
1 small unit of Drengr skirmishers with slings
1 unit of Bondi with bows
1 small unit of Ulfhednar
some traders and some kids
4 Norse chieftains
some Pagan priest/ advisors and a Bard
some Einhärjar/Valkyria type of Shieldmaidens
1 small unit of Christian priests and some wounds markers.
1 small unit of Ryttare

So the big question is where to go from this?
Maybe some mounted type of scouts, maybe a large round command base for the overall commander of the whole hird.

Conquest Games has really stepped up a notch with these and they are soo mutch better then thier earlier Normans.

I agree - I never bothered buying their Norman sets, but after seeing some assembled and painted samples of the Archers set, I purchase don eof those and was not disappointed.

Also agreed. I mean, it's a little tricky to get a natural looking pose out of the archers given the way the arms are sculpted, but it's possible with a bit of chopping and carving. And their Normans are a great kit too, I just wish there was a bit more head diversity and the shields were separate to the hands!

The miniatures are a mixture of Gripping Beast, Shieldwall miniatures and V&V miniatures.
I must really recommend V&V miniature, they must be some of the best Viking miniatures out there.

Can you tell how is the resin on the V&V miniatures?
Is it soft or hard?
The miniatures seem great but very fragile.

Engel the Norsemen are cool. Do you check out somewhere for references on how they might really look like?
I happened to visit Gudvangen village in Norway around 4 years ago. They host Viking Market every summer offering a show of Viking life. It was strange to move from today’s Norway urban landscape (like this https://tranio.com/norway/) into the world of Vikings. They did some sort of reconstruction of fighting, archery, ballgames, etc. resembling the guys from your collection. They plan to launch a permanent Viking theme village in May 2017 and have a dedicated web site. So you might check out. Good luck! ;)

Thanks Sammie

I have looked on lots of picture from Viking markets and so on.
One of my sisters is really heavy into medieval and viking markets, sewing clothes and so on so I have talket to her and her husband about references and so on.

I have some books, my favorite is a book by two Norwegian writers called "Vikingar i Krig"

And lots of inspirations can be found on the net.
I have gathered some pictures here: https://www.pinterest.se/jonas_peter_eng/norse/ (https://www.pinterest.se/jonas_peter_eng/norse/)
