Title: The Ludus of Bibulus the Flos *19.10.13 The newest member*
Post by: OSHIROmodels on July 20, 2013, 03:04:31 PM
Its a given name...  ::)

A small Ludus to play our gladiator games on. I've been told its a bit small for Blood on the Sands but we'll give it a go anyway  :)

Hexes are 30mm across the flats and the figure is a 40mm Battle Honours one.

Should get the basic walls done tomorrow.

Fight reports to follow soon  :D

Really nice James. The things you can do with a "laser".  o_o

A small Ludus to play our gladiator games on. I've been told its a bit small for Blood on the Sands but we'll give it a go anyway  :)

Not at all, the size will be totally fine. It may actually make for some very interesting fights where "push back" is a real worry and movement actually becomes quite important. A good tactic will be to try and turn your opponent and force him against the closest wall, where he may fall prone and the crowd will despise him.

Fight, fight, fight!

The great houses of Bibbles, Malamutius and Medicus Mortem are meeting on Monday night

Really looking forward to this guys. Nick BRING camera!!  :)

I've got a decent camera and will take it along.

Good to know that the smaller arena will have a tactical effect, not that I'll be able to use tactics as I'm shit at gaming full stop  lol

Looking at the photos, the Battle Honors Gladiators don't look quite as accurate as those from Brigade (Paul Hicks), Crusader or Pegasus (54mm).

The sculpts are a good ten years old now, so probably not the most accurate.

Of course you can. :)

Whatever you feel like painting. You only need four, but the Battle Honours choice is limited.

It seems it all depends on which translation site you use.

I have found scoop, frying pan, trowel and even washbasin for trulla.

It must have been difficult communicating with all those possibilities.
No wonder they were always at war!
 >:(

How about Domus de Cementarius?

If that dont work then I am going for Gaffius Masonius..... ::)

Started (finally) on the walls. This was going to be my Box project but as it won't be any more I'm not going to be restricted size  :D

Using bendy MDF as a start I'll need to cut out some ovals to encapsulate and top the bare walls, to help keep the shape.

Needs a bit of simple bracing...

Got some basic ideas for the rest but we'll see how it goes  :)

Also painted my retarius and will get some decent pictures of him up tonight.

cheers

Clever use of the bendy mdf, props for that.

I was expecting a villa-like surroundings, but maybe Mason will have the honour of being the owner of more succesful ludus?  ;)

Thank you kindly gents  :)

I have got an idea for the surrounding Ludus buildings such as quarters, lanista rooms etc but we'll see.

If Frank comes up with a more generic set of combat it could spill out into the streets (which will then have to be built  :D ).

Rodge, that made me laugh out loud, thank you  :D

Dont you go stirring him up.
 :o

I have no intentions of buildings anything remotely Ludus-like......yet.
 ::)

When/if I do, I wont be comparing it with anyone.
It would have to work in Mordheim anyway, to be justified.

Don't worry mate, I know my Ludus is crap (well, the members anyway  ::) lol ).

Here are the painted members so far...

Froussard the Retarius

And the ever changing Thraex who I've given up naming as he's died so often  ::) but at least he has a shield now...

And just for a bit of fun  :)
I might use this as an advertisement of sorts outside the , I'm just wondering if there would be anyway to 'mosaic' it  ???

That retiarius is the one that I am converting into a Hoplomachus.
Glad it is as it would be silly for us to both have the same figure.

Glad to see the Thraex has a shield, you never know that might be the turning point in his career.

Love the new additions - the arena is a triumph!

Very clever way of doing things.  :)

Your Thraex looks much better with his parma and as mentioned it may turn his luck around.  ;)

Your "net pansy" looks like Neptune reborn - perhaps he will bring your ludus some much needed luck...

Nice looking gladiators, they look the business... hopefully they will deliver in the arena.

Why did you chaps decide to go all 40mm with this, just for the looks? Isn't the 40mm range quite limited?

You had better ask Malamute for the answer to that one.

I already had the figures, got them years ago and decided i fnallly wanted to paint them. So no initial financial outlay and the larger scale looks great for single figure games. We also considered 54mm.... lol

Yes, the range is limited so we have bought more to convert. Of the 9 classes I think we are only missing a couple. So no real problems and besides I enjoy a bit of putty pushing. ;)

I believe you will find it is a filter from Photoshop called "stained glass" texture.

That's correct - I used two filters in Photoshop, Dry Brush then Stained Glass.  The Dry Brush filter simplifies the image details and makes the Stained Glass filter work more effectively for mosaics.

Got a bit of spare time this evening and so made some more progress on the Ludus  :)

Ignore the blue, it's just the backing film. The outside of the oval will probably be the extents of the arena proper but I fancy that some normal type buildings will be tacked onto the side.

Now the detail of one of the entrances.

And a little bit of daft inspiration  :D

There'll be stone seating most of the way round and a 'box' for the hoypaloy to sit in.

A new member is on the way to the Ludus of the Flos  :)

He's going to have his sword turned into a sicka so he will become a Thraex. I've also added a massive feather to his helmet just to give him a bit more flair.

Apologies for the slightly blurry photo  :?

I've also done some limited work to the seating of the arena. Probably doesn't make much sense at the moment but it will do in time.

Nice conversion. Seriously poncy feather.   ;)  ::)

I'm starting to worry about you lot. Captain Blood's gladiator with his huge great muscles, yours with his big flouncy feather?! I'm a bit scared to see what Malamutes latest recruit is going to look like...  ;D

The Arena is really starting to take shape.

Lovely James. The arena is going to be spectacular. When are you going to start painting the 200 spectator figures?  ;)  lol

Good stuff, mate!
 :-*

Like the poncy twat with the feather.
Losing to him would be really embarrassing!
 ;)

That arena is going to look the nuts when you have finished.
Kudos to the Ludos!

(I wont bother bringing mine to BLAM.
It will look like Leyton Orient's stadium in the shadow of Wembley).

It will probably be a 40mm rendition of Danny La Rue.
 :D

Forget everything I've ever said about an enclosed area - I want one of those!!  :-*

Taken to a level you'd expect from James.

That thing must be pretty big, yes? Have you thought about sinking the arena into a coffee table or some similar surface.

Don't mind the ostrich feather, plume of smoke or squirrel tail at all either. He will certainly stand out.  :)

Again loving what you fellas are doing with these big glads.

Quite happy with the plume, doesn't look too out of place.

Jim Blow-toe looks great, mate.
Nice job and the plume does look good.
It gives him height and makes him more imposing.
 :-*

Like the shield, very clever.

Jimboto looks like worthy opponent, even though his lanista dresses him up so pompously  ;)
