Title: Schmied's Farm AWI WIP (Update 18.01.14 new pics finished pieces)
Post by: Admiral Benbow on July 26, 2013, 10:34:38 PM
The club's game for Crisis 2013 in Antwerp will be "The Fort" an episode during the American War of Independence loosely based on the novel by Bernhard Cornwell and the Penobscot expedition (Castine, Maine, USA, January to August 1779). My part will be to build two terrain pieces for the game, a small farm complex and a church. Both will be founded on the Perry plastic buildings, but it was clear from the beginning that the Perry farmhouse alone would be too small to become an eyecatcher.

I started this project some weeks ago, but now my well-earned holidays have commenced and I will have the necessary time to finish the buildings in reasonable time. So what happened till now?

The nice Perry farmhouse was glued together for scale reference and I decided to build an appropriate barn, using black foamcard this time. The benefit of this material should be to save painting it black before cladding it with wood strips and avoid white card shining through the gaps. Window frames would be cut from granny grating plastic mesh. Well, that was the plan ...

I wanted to get maximum realism for the wood planking, so a lightly coloured thin veneer was used, cut into small strips and glued horizontally one onto the other. Inspiring examples were borrowed from the works of John Boadle (Architectural Miniatures) and David Marshall (TM Terrain). The two miniatures on the next pic are for scale comparison and were masterly painted by the great Steve Dean.

But, to my great frustration, the black foamcard material is so smooth that the PVA woodglue could not adhere to the material properly, so all surfaces had to be roughened up with sandpaper ...

At this stage I decided that the Perry farmhouse plus a larger barn wouldn't be enough, so a smithy's workshop came into play and was integrated in my tiny sketches. German emigrants performing the blacksmith's handwork for generations would be the owner of this farm, hence the name "Schmied" (or smithy in english). First step was to set up an improvised jig for the wooden supports from balsa wood and hardwood strips. As you can see, I used my handy cutting tool to get all the strips equal. Everything was fixed just with tape and needles till the glue dried. For the roof supports I cut another jig from cardboard.

After finishing all the woodwork the building could be painted. As I wanted to preserve the woodgrain, an acrylic household rosewood glaze was brushed on resulting in a very nice and natural scale wood effect. Two lighter drybrushes with cream and off-white acrylics followed to accentuate the edges. The granny grating windows looked ok, but somehow I didn't like them being out of scale.

The forge and chimney were constructed from some pieces of styrodur and fitted under the roof construction of the blacksmith's shop, and brickwork carved into.

To start tiling the roof, heavy cardboard was glued into place. It got a layer of the household glaze to stiffen it a bit more and prevent warping when using PVA glue. Hardest work was to get all the angles right, so I used paper templates first ...

The forge's roof construction needed to be removable to get access when placing all the blacksmith's equipment and detail parts (later ...). It was easier to paint this way as well.

The chimney was undercoated and painted with acrylics quite brightly, only to be washed later with dark inks to look more realistic. It's not finished yet as the caulking has still to be done.

As I told already, the plastic mesh windows were not to my liking, so I ordered my own lasercut scale windows from Andy Slater (http://www.archeotech.co.uk/catalogue/0002-windows.html (http://www.archeotech.co.uk/catalogue/0002-windows.html)) which were such an improvement. Roof tiling was done with another lasercut product, Paper Creek S-scale Shake Shingles ordered from the US. This is a precolored lasercut strip material on special prepared card looking very realistic and widely used by model railroad craftsmen. Unfortunately Paper Creek has closed down its business some time ago, but I found a real equivalent in "Wild West Shingles" who offer a broad range of different coloured variations in HO, S and O scales. S-Scale is 1/64 and highly recommended for our 28 mm "scale". www.wildwestmodels.com (http://www.wildwestmodels.com) I absolutely love this stuff!

So, that's the state of affairs so far. I hope you like it, and if there are any questions, please just ask. To be continued soon ...

Absolutely stunning! Keeping the woodgrain was a great idea.

A quick couple of questions:

1. What is styrodur? Is it just styrofoam like the pink or blue we get over here?

2. What is the household glaze? Is it like a Minwax but acrylic?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks everybody, you keep me motivated ...

Styrodur is a german brand name of styrofoam, it's the same stuff you know already, just another colour.

Don't know Minwax, but it seems to be something similar. I went to a DIY and looked through the indoor wood glazes. Usually you'll find many brands and colours, I was after a dark transparent stuff based on acrylics. It's a bit like Army Painter but mucho cheaper!

Looking forward to see it on a table at Crisis.

You most probably will, Johan!

Admiral Benbow, this is absolutely stunning. I am temptedto say that this is quite one of the very best pieces I have seen on LAF, and that's saying quite a lot!

This small line, in particular is priceless:

"After finishing all the woodwork the building could be painted. As I wanted to preserve the woodgrain, an acrylic household rosewood glaze was brushed on resulting in a very nice and natural scale wood effect. Two lighter drybrushes with cream and off-white acrylics followed to accentuate the edges. "

How to make balsa look like weathered structural timber in less than three lines. Simply, elegant and stunningly effective. If I was wearing a hat, I would take it off to you! :-*

ETA: I nearly lost the will to live shingling the roof on my Saxon great hall and have shied away from shingles since. I'll check out the product you recommended!

Post by: Admiral Benbow on July 30, 2013, 10:06:10 PM
Did lots of accessories in the meantime. You can't have enough of this stuff on a farm (and church ...), can you?

I've got the brilliant mobile forge cart from Westfalia Miniatures to use the forge parts and equipment for my farm forge. The very nice wagon will find a place on the AWI table as well. Very fine castings with lots of details and a bit tricky to glue together, but I like them very much.

The little graveyard for the church was also finished, and some more close ups of the crates and barrels from a broad variety of manufacturers. It definitely pays off to have a big mould to cast all these items when you're into terrain building ...

Last but not least - when I visited the Prof. recently I was impressed by his nice paint storage racks, so after 40+ years of modelling and painting I bought my own to store all the paints properly. Below the Ral Partha treasury, above everything else. Do you need so many paints? Well, if I consider that I painted for years with only 6 or 7 large bottles of Lukas acrylics, not really. But it looks good and saves time, doesn't it?

Hhm, can't tell you exactly, I'm collecting this stuff for quite some years. But as you mention, Pardulon and Stronghold Terrain are a good start, then Hovels, Antenocitis Workshop, Itar's workshop (http://www.itarsworkshop.com/catalog/index.php (http://www.itarsworkshop.com/catalog/index.php)), Micro Art Studio (http://www.microartstudio.com/index.php/news,,5 (http://www.microartstudio.com/index.php/news,,5)) and so on.

Actually, you can obtain them again, but via flea markets or shows attended by Iron Wind Metals. They are the inheritors of Ral Partha's metal, molds, and paints. I mentioned to them awhile back how much I missed their paints and they said they had tons of them still left over. If you are in the U.S., I recommend contacting Iron Wind and letting them know what you're interested in.

http://www.ironwindmetals.com/d/index.php

If you are unsuccessful getting what you need through them, send me a PM and I'll try to put you in contact with the guy who usually takes the paints to the flea markets....

Sadly, I'm in Canada, but it would be interesting to see if there's a way to still come by some of those. When I first got into minis, I bought all Ral Partha and loved them, but my grandiose plan for getting into 40k turned out to be a huge failure, so my interest waned.

I didn't abandon minis entirely, getting into some silly prepainted stuff. 10 years later, none of my old paints were much good anymore!

From the ralparthaeurope-site: "The popular range of 'Miniature Paints' liquid acrylics, specially formulated for use on metal miniatures. They are supplied in 18ml plastic pots with a screw cap, all colours priced at £1.25
(these are not the original 'Partha paints')."

 :-I

Btw: the Partha paints were really good paints at their time, and I still like to use them, but with so many good quality ranges of acrylics on the market today, you don't really need to get them at all.

I agree on that. My current crop serves me well enough and I have no complaints of note (and certainly nothing that couldn't be addressed by some other modern contemporary paints).

The main thing I miss nowadays is a few unique colours that used to be in the old Partha line, most especially a few of the metallics (like their beautiful brass, which, like real brass, was a sort of greenish-gold).  '

Anyway, mikedemana let me know that he has the email for this fellow, so I can always ask to see if he's ever in town. If so, I can always peruse the stock for those few unique colours I'd like to get again.

In the meantime:

Finished the grouting on the chimney using pastels and isopropyl alkohol; works nicely including a good weathering effect, I think:

Everything of the workshop was then glued down firmly, a slightly hazardous action as both the roof construction and the chimney AND the bellows needed to be placed simultaneoulsly. All accessories were then added from back to front. Small detail items like hammers, tools etc. will follow soon.

The plan is to leave the roof partly open, as if it would be in the process of getting new shingles. So I will use a slightly modified colour for those shingles, looking a bit more "new". This way I'll get more light into the workshop ...

The church was also painted but is not finished yet. It's a nice kit, but there was some warping which I realized too late, so I need to live with it now. Thankfully it's not that obvious. Base with fence also finished, so it's coming together soon.

I want to include some nice trees to the farm and church and some more for the table, so I had some prepared. I think it's most important to find some nice and realistic looking twigs, and for me the best and most durable material for the small branches is rubberised horsehair. Tearing the stuff apart and cutting small pieces to be glued down with woodglue is the first step. This is what you see here, too much material:

When the glue is completey dry (leave it overnight), start to cut and tear the stuff with scissors to thin it out and try to get a realistic branch structure. I did it here on the next pic, but even after getting this photo I cut more horsehair down for more "fluffyness".

Then on to scattering the branches with two different coloured materials, a dark one from below, and the light tone from above. Similar to painting a miniature ... And I will heartily recommend to not use hair spray, spray glue, wood glue or whatever, but the one-and-only-glue for all scatter materials - Scatter-Grip, available from Antenocities Workshop. The stuff is as sticky as it gets and will not harden but remain sticky, so what will come into contact with this stuff will stick forever! (Including fingers, tweezers, toothpicks and of course other trees, so keep them separate; I use cheap freezer bags)

For me those trees look as natural as it gets on a wargame table, and they can stand some handling, too. There was a left-over piece from cutting the trees apart, and instead of throwing it away it was converted into a small woodcutter scene. Could be used as objective marker or something like that.

To be continued ...

 :)

Excellent scratbuilding and quite a few tips to bookmark  :) :) :)

Have you considered the Fenris Games new shingles? FSame format as the Wild West ones (strips) but in .5mm styrene
http://www.fenrisgames.com/shop.html#!/~/product/category=2457557&id=16079262

Possibly a lot closer and cheaper that sending all the way to the US.

Absolutely inspiring and will most certainly visit your table at Crisis.

Thanks everybody!

I need to get the buildings finished until end of next week, so here's the last WIP update: painted the Perry farmhouse, forgot to paint the door hinges ...

Church components fixed on their base, second sanding. Will paint the ground at this stadium as all parts of the base are easily accessible. Then the tree will be added, sanded and the ground painted. Greens as a last step. I left enough space between the fence and the church and gravestones to let some battalions of soldiers defend this area.

The forge's roof got its new shingles, and I left a part unfinished to get more light under the roof and create some interesting detail. These are shingles from WildWestModels.

Dear Mr. Admiral Benbow Sir;
I am in awe of your work...so if you could help a four thumbed humble baboon such as myself I would greatly appreciate any and all assistance possible. I am in the process of painting up my own log cabins and was wondering if you could provide a tutorial and paint colours and order on how you did so to get the colours of the wood and roof to come out as you have done.

As stated earlier I would be most appreciative. Thank you so much in advance.

I think I've provided all informations you're after in this thread already. Please just read it thoroughly from the start and you'll find even the brand of colours used and the company who made the paper roof shingles. Can't provide a tutorial other than that ..., or did I get you wrong?

Yes, it's a long time since I posted here, but this was the other unfinished thread needing a good end. Schmied's farm and the church were featured in our Crisis game in Antwerp and there might be pics of the game elsewhere (January issue of Wargames Illustrated, for example ...), but only today I found the time to shoot the finished building and some of their details. So, nothing more to say about this, I just hope you enjoy the last series of photos of this set.

Matt, the fence comes from the Perry's farmhouse and church kits. I just removed the one or other plank and painted it.

Thank you for sharing it.
