Last April I got my greasy hands on the most ugly, cheesy cooky tin in the world. It was a special make for the coronation of the king of the Netherlands.
Why did I buy it? Well the cookies were very tasteful but I bought it because I got inspired by 6milPhil who made a Ludus in a tin a few months ago for his grandson Captain Stinky.

I loved the idea and stole it :D (certainly after seeing Jase's version http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=53198.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=53198.0)).
I bought the gladiator game from EM4, some 25mm MDF hex bases and some blue-foam. Needles to say the project ended up in a corner of the man-cave until this week. I have a few weeks of holiday and really need to paint some models (but don't feel like doing so ::)) Instead I remembered my tin. It was the first time I worked with the foam and I like it, I will certainly use it more often. So here it is...

Next up on the todo list is repainting the 5 gladiators and make a protection thingy for the miniatures, dice etc. to fit inside the tin.
Hope you like it (maybe I went a little overboard on the blood, but hey being a gladiator is a tricky business). C&C is more then welcome.

Za

Awesome...I can see many victims have already met their fate! lol

That looks great, Za!
Kudos for your Ludus...

I should be joining your in Gladioli shenanigans, but the fellas I will be up against are a little shortsighted so are using 40mm figures.
For that scale I think we will need a picnic basket instead of a tin!
;)

That looks great! I've been considering buying that tin as well, to make a bigger and improved ludus, but so far it's been put on the backburner.
I like what you've done with the blood and moss effects!
If you want I can send you some of the foam I used for protecting the miniatures. I still have plenty.
Cheers

That would be quite interesting. A Ludus in a Picknick Basket ;D.

Thanks and thanks :D
I tried to strip the paint of the pre painted gladiators that come pre-painted with the EM4 games. That was kind of difficult. There was some very hefty paint on there.
I painted two gladiators. It is a very simple paint job. A Base cote and then I brushed on some army painter (they will be played so army painter gives extra protection and a nice enough finish). The miniatures still have a bit of a shine on them so I have to give them another coat of matt varnish. Next I thought about the inlay for the tin and I cut some foam of an old GW case up to the right size.
Here are the results:

Blood on the Go! :D

Fantastic. I love that the hexes are discreetly disguised.

the inside looks brilliant, but TBH my first thought would be to take a can of sprayoaint to the outside and get rid of willempie and trix :P

Hey Za, could you post some pictures of the dice which come with that gladiator game? I'm debating making my own at some point, and had been drawing up dice designs. If those are suitable I may just pick some up instead. Are they engraved or painted?
I was planning a dice with:
1) Gladius
2) Gladius
3) Crossed Gladius
4) Scutum/Shield
5) Scutum/Shield
6) Laurel
I see several of those on your dice...hoping they match up somehow?
-
Will make some piccies tomorrow. In the mean time this might help.

Ah, okay, so I see different sides for different colour dice. May be worth picking up and set and checking them out. Would be much better than spending my own money designing or making some! Hmmm...
PS: They look etched and not simply painted...that's good.

These are very cool. Wish someone would come up with a tutorial on how to make them. Do you actually have to sculpt the brickwork, or is there some kind of pre-fab method?

Thanks Steve.
Making one is very simple. There are several methods.
1) The hexes. You can buy MDF ones 2mm thick and glue them to the bottom with simple white glue. Then base them with some sand. Or you can print hexes on paper and glue this to the bottom and base them
2) Walls. I used blue foam from antenocitisworkshop 1 cm thick and just carved the stone in with a pencil. I then used the knuckles from my fist to dent the foam somewhat. Another method is using cork (for instance from the cheap Ikea placemats.
3) finishing touches. I used peaces of wood in the corners to hide the gaps and build a simple door from some coffee stirrers.
Thats it basically

The set came with 3 blue, 3 white, 1 red and 1 purple dice. They are engraved.

Hmmm...thanks Za. Close, but likely no cigar...appreciate it! How does Ludus Gladiatorus play anyway? It looks exceedingly simple. Is it fun?
-
Haven't played it yet but the rules are on two sheets of A4 and they look at first glance like real easy and fun. Beer and pretzel rules. Will play it next week with misses Za when we are on holidays.
Cheers.

The expansion looks pretty nifty...more gladiators and a lion. lol

Mate, we must be sharing the same brain!
My Ludus is well under way! We should play this next! What ruleset do you use?
