That should provide a 'storm of arrows'. Excellent figures.
-
:o those are excellent!! :-*
-
What company they from?
-
Excellent painting Michi. Love those.
And not a girl in sight! :o :o
;)
-
What company they from?
Foundry, I believe. But that is not certain, because I havenīt labelled the lead pile...
-
I agree - very nice indeed. :-*
-
I think they're a mix of Foundry and Crusader.
-
I think they're a mix of Foundry and Crusader.
Thatīs well possible. I remember buying crusaders and romans from Foundry, Renegade, Old Glory and Crusader.
-
Sublime painting Michi!! :o :o :o A lovely use of colours too!
-
You've done a good job on these. I like the colours.
Gamers often put skirmishers in drab fabrics when colorful fabrics using natural dyes were most likely widely available.

;)
Just my thought :D
Superb, Michi!

There are definitely some Perry First Crusade models in there - I know this because I have the same models in my 100% Perry El Cid Spanish army for WAB. The others do look like a lot like Crusader sculpts, but I'm not 100% certain of those.
Nice painting on all of them. The colour palette is varied, yet suitably subdued. Very nice indeed!

By adding another point worth of archers now it is 3 points of Norman levies. This time the miniatures are the officially supplied Saga-Normans from Gripping Beast:

Superb stuff :-* :-*

As I said before the figures are fantastic but you are going to have a difficult job using all three units in a game and win. Peasants are difficult to to activate and to get the best out of them you will need to load your battleboard with Storm of Arrows, Aimed Volley and Massed Volley - at the same time peasants don't generate SAGA dice.
I'd be interested in how you get on.
-
Yeah, that's looking really great.
I regret not having bought any archers for my Normans but only sucky sucky warriors with spear.. ;D

I havenīt played Saga yet, but I am aware of the peasants difficulties. I simply had so many archers, what else than painting them should I have done? I will try several combinations in the games that will be played and let you know how they perform.
To have not to rely on peasants for ranged attacks I now painted a unit of warriors equipped with crossbows too:

If you use the special character William the Bastard (yes, that's the William), you are allowed to equip anyone (i.e. warriors or hearthguard) with bows as an option. At the very least, that could be a fun variant warband to try, even if it's only to get all the archers off the shelf once in a while.

Hey, thatīs a cool hint. Iīm going to try that!
-
Great to see this growing band Michi :)

Stop it!
You're making my Normans look even sloppier! lol

I think it's a personal campaign, matey. I'll watch your back ;)

I got a sheet of gripping beast shield transfers that I did not intend to buy, but as they were there I didnīt want to waste them, although it is a question of honour that the miniatures shield will be painted freehand. Therefore I used them to make a few fatigue markers (one shield on a base is one and two shields on a base is worth two fatigue points):

Some cracking paint work there. Particularly like the fatigue markers too.
One option with all those bowmen - Sometimes you could use the Frank battle board and army list, one of the particular army lists enables bow armed warriors. Same Saga dice as the Normans utilised too.
Cheers, John.

Thanks John, I will have to check it - didnīt know it yet. Living in modern Franconia is reason enough to try playing the ancestors... ;)
-
Just caught on to this thread, Michi, and shame on me.
They are all absolutely gorgeous and will be filed away for future reference and inspiration.
:-* :-* :-*
Loving those Fatigue Markers too.
Consider that idea officially 'borrowed'!

And here is the Norman hearthguard to fight for their warlord Godefroy de Montmirail:

If youīd doubt the fashionable moustaches, let me tell you that the Normans employed quite a few mercenaries... :D
-
Oh, Michi, they're so fine....
:-*
Absolutely gorgeous.
:-*
This recent influx of wonderfully-painted Normans is very inspirational.
I must make a start on mine soon.
:)

LPL 10 made me adding some more levies:

Those are brilliant Michi. The shields are really something :-*
-
Wow... :-* :-*
Very nice Michael.
Although this looks more a army than a Saga force. :)
-
Juste wonderful !!
I like the way you've painted the shields, with the weathered effect... :-*
-
Brilliant! :-* How do you achieve that wonderful blended look on your clothing?
-
Beautiful, and I was wondering the same thing...really like your clothing (and the worn shields of course). How to achieve those effects, especially the clothing?
-

Itīs a simple seven-step layering (basic colour plus white).

I don't know if the words 'simple' and 'seven-step' can be put in the same sentence! :o

I think it is rather a question of patience (for the amount of effort you want to put in the process) than anything else. It is in fact simple, but it takes its time. Look at that bale for illustration:

I decided to finally paint some mounted reinforcements for my Saga Normans now: 1 point of warriors and two points of knights.

Lovely stuff 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Lovely painnting on those knights. :-*
-
Beautiful work. Love all the colors.
The new Age of Vikings book made the Normans much better than they were previously. Give your Warlord a Famous Steed (a new relic/artifact) and England will be yours.
-
Very well done. :-* :-*
Love those normans.
Are they BTD and GB?
-
With the new rules, you might get more value out of those 3 units of archers. :D
-
Cracking colours mate! Great painting! :-*
-
Are they BTD and GB?
Thanks for all those nice comments. A good portion of them are indeed Gripping Beast, but I canīt tell the source of the other ones. They have assembled in the lead pile over the years. Might be that there are Crusader or Old Glory among them too.
-
I was just curious about the minis.
I recognise 2 BTD horses and 1 mounted. :)
-
Lovely stuff again Michi.
