Hi all, last night my friend was showing me pictures online of his new house as it stands during it's construction over in the US. To a European (or at least Brit) it looks really odd, all constructed from bare wood like that before the "skin" is added.....

Anyway, the sight of it and the whole housing development put me immediately in mind of the rows and rows of laser cut houses on display at salute, all unpainted bare ply and mdf., I guess what I'm saying is if one were inclined, you could set you post apoc etc games around a mid construction US housing development, buy your lasercuts and leave them as-is. lol

Well it's American... they always seem to build houses like that. Even when compared to wooden houses from Northern Europe they still look unstable.
Then again: If you would apply European standards to house builing in the US it would propably cost you many times of an American house and I'll doubt you would get much more money if you ever wanted to sell it again... as always, it turns out to be a matter of perspective again.

Other way around for most parts. They build that way because of the huff and puff. A tornado will happily shred a brick building and brick is a lot more expensive, in time and materials, to replace.
Does look a bit like a wendy house though :)

As an American, that's the only way I've ever seen a house under construction, so now I'm curious: what does an in-progress European house look like?
Or maybe you just use the ones from the middle ages and don't have to build any more new ones? ;)

Well, "breeze block" construction, brick fascias, stud walking internally very often, steel framed construction for larger structures.
I'm sure a British architectural type will breeze in and clarify, I'm told such a beast prowls these very corridors. ;)

Mots of the times...
There's plenty of alternatives to traditional bricks. Concrete blocks and foam concrete blocks are used sometimes too, depending on what you want to build (for example concrete blocks are the only blocks I've ever seen in use for basement construction here in Germany). Roofs for small buildings are still done pretty medieval style over here. The only diffences are the beams, which tend to be glued laminated timber nowadays and there are some industrial roof tile designs (But the old ones are still pretty common too). Sometimes when rebuilding houses the interior is buildt similar to the US way, but we use pressed pulp or gypsum plaster boards on beams made from folded metals sheets instead.
I'm pretty sure there are lots of differences between the different countries across Europe.
