Hi all,
does anyone use this scale?
I am thinking of branching away from 28mm to 1/35, but the number of figures (as far as I can find) are limited...
I have started with this model from "Ant Miniatures" and have found some Zombies in "Green Army Men" style (these are a bit
larger than 1/35) but seem to fit OKish.
The girl is still in WIP Modus and I have painted up 1 Zombie.

If you do not have any objections to make conversions and are handy with green stuff or such material, you will find lots of 1/35 scale miniatures in the modelshop. Most will be or oriented towards the military but you can find some civilian and other themed miniatures. Long time ago i once converted a bunch of civilian/ww2 resistance to fighters of the anarchistic faction in the Spanish Civil War. It took quite sometime to find the things i needed but it can be done.
-
1:32 is often noticeably larger than 1:35 stuff, though you can occasionally get away with the size difference. Your Zombies look closer to 1:32, so I figured posting a couple of links to 54mm minis can't hurt. Personally I'd be tempted to go with 54mm and use the girl as just that, easier to find suitably minis.
http://www.evolution-miniatures.com/
The two 54mm minis would work well as hunters.
http://www.zinnfiguren-martin-hille.de/index.php?language=en&cat=c3_54mm-figures.html&
Again 54mm/ 1:32 and again zombie snacks rather than zombies (categories: Dystopian future & Miscellaneous)
Preiser (link: http://www.preiserfiguren.de/showpage.php?Katalogdownload&SiteID=83) has a couple of 1:32 minis, scroll down to 'Miniaturfiguren I. Maßstab 1:32. ' (pdf file). Besides sets of civilians in various poses, there's sets containing different body parts to build your own minis (should prove quite useful for building Zs).
And finally something smelly and rotten- instant Zombies:
SmartMax: http://www.smartmaxstore.com/soldat-inconnu-en.htm
There's these, which most likely are 1:32 as well: http://boxozombies.bigcartel.com/product/box-o-zombies-set-1
(Size comparison pic with a 1:35 soldier from Dragon: http://modelgeek.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=203853)
And some 1:35 stuff as well. Mostly military stuff in that 'scale' available.
http://www.mk35.com
Under 1:35-> Figure-> Civilians there's a couple that should be easy to turn into zombies, though they're WWII minis.
A list with 1:35 (and larger) Civilian Figures, might come in handy:
http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=1401.0
Not sure what rules you'll be using, but as GW still has the Inquisitor rules available for free, these might be worth a quick read: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat480007a&categoryId=6700005a§ion=&aId=21500020a
Hope this is of some use at least, despite the distinct lack of shambling hordes (and me suggesting a different scale).
-
@ Legion - Iīve got no problems with doing the conversions and using green stuff, itīs like you said, it will take a really long time.
But itīs not like I have to have them finished by tomorrow :-)
-
@ ink the troll - thanks for of these useful links. Will dig deeper tonight.
Thatīs the decision now, stick with 1/35 or move over to 1/32-54mm!!!!!
The plastic zombies are really cheap and quite easy to get hold of, so no problems there on shambling hordes.
Itīs the modern civiīs that are causing the headache, of course green stuff and a sharp knife will help in a lot of cases.
I got another fig in the post yesterday and turned him into a zombie (as a young 12 yr old) fits in quite well with the large zombies.
-
There should be at least some more civilian minis, as 1:32 is also roughly the ratio that's used for Spur 1/ gauge 1 railway stuff.
Some toy car manufacturers like Siku also have 1:32 stuff, mostly farming related-machines. Britains used to have railway/ farming stuff for gauge 1 as well.
So zombiefied pigs and demonically possessed combine harvesters just might be an option as well (or maybe better some remotely more usefull bits like security barriers: http://www.e-shop-direct.com/eshop/siku/sikufarmer-zubehoer-1076/10-absperrgitter-10735/ ).
-
I started a while ago a WWW2 project in 1:35, therefor I used for my Zombie-conversions GW heads and hands.
The heads are perfectly in scale, the hands a little bit oversized ;)
Have a look here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=19186.0
So, just ge you some Civilians and convert them, and stick to 1:35, I say :)
-
@ Comsquare - those are nice looking german zombies you made :-) Zombies in WWII (Wierd War) are quite easy to do in 1/35.
All of my zombies have now arrived lol
Iīve now got 42 Figs for under 35,-...and another 6 Figs (Box o Zombies from the US)...These are quite nice!!
Did a quick conversion on 2 of the figs. On one hacked his legs off, and the other added boobs and hair.
-
Quick update on the shambling horde.
Converted another zombie as a woman, painting is going slow due to this thing called "work"....
Because I really canīt find good enough modern civilians (á la Hasslefree/LAFM in 1:35 scale)
Iīve decided to get some figures done up in 3D (first teaser/draft) attached.
I will then get these done in 3D printing.
What do you guy/gals think?
Cheers

-
Hi people,
just a quick update on the hunters.
First 3 characters are nearly done (fine tuning) then itīs of to the 3D printers...
This is a long process, so before the first models are in my grubby little mitts will still take awhile!! this is a projekt in patience o_o
NYD

Oh yeah, also forgot the weapons sprue....

Spotted these by the same guys who did the Box o' Zombies, October Toys.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M-U-S-C-L-E-SET-OF-5-STYLES-ZOMBIE-OCTOBER-TOYS-DEAD-ZOMBIES-MINI-FIGURES-/281172247567?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item41772c040f
Couldn't find them on their site, only on eBay.
-
Hey Agent Brown,
I saw those as well...The only One I like is the schoolgirl, the Rest are too cartoony or have weird poses...
-
The horde is slowly growing...
Comments are welcome ...
NYD
-
They look really great but I can't see how you would go about terrain and vehicles. To my way of thinking terrain etc would take up a lot of storage space.
-
The space needed is Not that Bad, I also only have a small table and no dedicated room :(
I am making two 5 mm foamboards each with a size of 80cm x80cm, these are devided into 40mm squares, giving me 400 squares per board, more than enough space for atleast 10 buildings plus roads. Most buildings will be 6x5 or 9x7 squares.
And if my plans work out I can lay them flat due to using magnets!! (still in wip Phase).
If not One Box will Hold them all.
In this scale I can still fit about 80-100 Zombies on the board, and instead of 20 vehicles I can still use 5-7 plus odds and ends.
Of course you can't go for Mega hordes in this scale, but it looks quite impresive, and with my old eyes I can see them better lol
Cheers
-
great work so far :)
-
Slayer - thanks....just had a Set back with my first 3D model, to say it was bad is an understatement!!! Oooohhh this is Fun o_o
-
can only get better then eh :D
-
Oh god yes, 100% better than crap...
-
Iīve got my first 6 x 3D Renderings finished and my first 3d Printed figure... :D
100% better than the first trial...
Now Iīm getting a couple of trial prints done in other materials, see if we can get more/smoother detail in there..
Sorry that the print photo is so crap...I will try and give it a black wash tonite at home, and then take another.
any resemblance to characters, living, (un)dead or fictional, is purely coincidental.

-
is that print of your home 3d printer or through shapeways. Howd did the weapon sprue come out?
-
@ mindfad - not shapeways, but a local 3D company. We are still experimenting with the processes at the moment, but we are getting there.
Weapons came out ok (as you can see)..but the scale of the Cricket bat, the Katana shaft and the baseball bat were a bit off. These have been corrected and
are going out for the next trial print next week.
Cheers

I have finally got a good 3D print for one of the survivors, and I slapped a bit of paint on her.
Itīs still not 100% how I want it, but Iīm getting there :)

inbetween doing the 3D print I found time to paint up a commercial figure.
"run, Jimmy run"....

Horror Clix does a 50 foot Ex Girlfreind. She would size up nicely for a zombie or maybe even a survivor.

um, how tall is 1/35 scale in millimeters? I mean to top of head, and to eye level.
-
um, how tall is 1/35 scale in millimeters? I mean to top of head, and to eye level.
1/35 is 54mm (not sure if that's the figure height or eye level)
-
1/35 Scale is normally 54mm to top of head (54mm (eye level) being 1/32 scale) most of the figures that I am doing are between 50mm (young females) to 55mm (big beefy macho guys). and a few inbetween...
These match up quote nicely to the existing models which are on the market.

cool.
since were on the topic, at what scale is a 28mm mini? (30mm to top of head.)
it would be cool to have road warrior type minis on the 1/72 scale also now that i think about it.
Do you know how tall these little guys here are:

28mm equals 1/64, but with scale creep, most will match 1/56 nowadays.
1/72 used to be true 25mm but is now generaly considered to be 20mm.

Hi Guys,
just a small update to my little babies.
The prototypes (masters) are now with me ;D
Now all I have to do is get them casted, if my local caster gets his finger out of his south end!!!!
I will be getting them done in 1:35 scale and 30mm.
Also a sneak view of whats coming next...

Very nice project. It is nice that I am not the only who see the beauty in bigger figures :D
-
Hi NYD,
your figures are the reason that I entered this forum!
I am searching for zombie hunters and zombie figures in 1:35 or 1:32 or 1:25 scale for ages, and there's not much variety in that genre in that scales.
There are some post-apocalyptic figures in 1:35 and 54mm (Girls from ANT miniatures and some male stalker figures from different makers, too) and some Zombies and Zombie Hunters in 1:24 from Knight Models and Darkworldcreation, but not much more.
What you have sculpted is awesome!
If you cast them in 1:35 scale, count me in - I will sincerely buy one of each!!
Cheers
Thomas
-
@ Thomas,
thanks for the kind words :-)
It was exactly what I went through, looking for modern survivor figures in this scale was a nightmare. There are lots of Modern soldiers/SF operaters on the market from different companies (these can of course be converted, but I wanted the real thing!!). I have the girls from ANT as well.
These (and alot more) will be casted in 1:35 scale.
I think that in about 12-14 weeks I will finally be set up to sell these online. I will be starting with about 10 characters and seperate weapons.
My kredoīs to all the guys/gals that have set up their own small miniature business!!!!
Cheers

i like the 1/35 scale. (Its easy on the eyes)
I assume then obviously, you can use plastic toy models on the 1/35 scale with them.
The only complaint i would foresee someone uttering, is that it would make your game table rather large by comparison.
But there will always be complainers, and whiners. ;D
Do it! :D
-
um, a thought popped into my mind;
you can 3D print, but can you also 3D scan an existing mini?
-
@ Jamil,
easy on the eyes, thatīs why I started in this scale :-)
Yes, you can use all sorts of stuff in 1:35/1:32 scale (cars, farm animals, Play Mobile etc). and they are quite cheap as well :-)
No, the table size is the same, as I mentioned earlier on in this thread, I only have a small table and no dedicated hobby room.
Itīs just that the buildings/vehicles are a bit bigger, but I can still get upto 100 zombies and survivors on my table, which in this scale is one good "eye candy".
Instead of 20 x 28mm builings I have 10-12 on my table (still being built up).
Now you can have this argument with 6mm against 28mm, and the list goes on. There is no perfect scale or genre, we all do that what we like/can afford.
Even though I donīt do 6mm or 15mm I still love looking at all of the differnet scales/Genre on this forum. (everything is just one part of this huge hobby of ours)
-------
You can 3D scan the minis perfectly....BUT, now we come into IP country..I did a test with my local 3D guys and it came out really good, we then destroyed the model afterwards due to this reason. I doubt very much that you would find a company (in Germany) that would scan alot of figures.
Cheers
-
I don't want to interfere in this discussion about pros and cons of larger figures in tabletop gaming, but if you are more into diorama building (as I am) the 1:32 and 1:35 scale gives you nearly unlimited military vehicles and equipment and of course buildings / ruins.
What is still missing in this scale are the kind of post-apocalyptic figures NYD is sculpting - and of course zombies...
Cheers
Thomas
-
Wow, NYD, i completely missed this post so far. Your modelling is very very nice, and the printing looks soft and detailed! That's a great start!!
Can i ask how much did it cost to you printing a figure? Shapeways is relatively cheap, but the experiments i did with miniatures weren't that satisfying at all. Moddler is much much better, but when i asked them for a budget, it was nearly 10 times more expensive than Shapeways! :S
-
Hey Thomas,
Zombies are coming - but that is another kettle of fish :-)
Plan is to do a sprue with seperate arms and heads, 1 male and a mixed female/kids sprue.
But my girlfriend is still in the artwork phase and how to place the models in the sprue etc....
Toni
-
@ Sangennaru,
thanks for the "like".
Shapeways couldīnt even start with my renderings, too large, too complicated etc. blah blah....
I had a quick look at moddler and a few in the UK, but they wanted an arm and a leg (as a zombie, this donīt matter)...
but man were they asking prices!!!!!!
It toke enough testing (with different local printers)to get this quality (you have to be prepared to sink a bit of money in this) o_o
In the orange quality (above) you have to pay about EURO 180-250 per figure to get them printed.
Cheers
Toni
-
Oh, that's some money.
I'm sure that shapeways can print your models, they are quite elastic on that. Maybe you'll have to split in two, but i've printed things 50mm long with no problems.
The point is, the quality is not excellent. But well, with 20 euros they will print you a figure, so maybe it worth a try! =)
-
yeah they could have printed them, if I cut them up, but their quality wasīnt what I was after.
If you pay 20 euro then expect 20 euro quality :-)
-

true. For my small projects i used shapeways, the result is nice but it could have been much better than this!

OOH! :( I hope you didnt get the wrong idea! :(
I meant scanning larger Resin Model Kits that ive already made (1/6 scale) and then shrinking them down to the 1/35 scale, 1/72, and so on.
Right now i am investigating a product called 'Reduce-It' made by Sil-Pak that shrinks after its been cast into a mould. I thought that it might have been easier to scan them, rather than to completely re-sculpt them in a smaller scale.
I studied 3D modelling in college actually. Last i checked the scanning technology still had bugs and didnt produce a very good model. It seemed like a better job would have been done had it been modelled from scratch.
I was just wondering, thinking that the technology had advanced much further in recent years.
-
@ Jamil,
wrong idea??? of course not!!! But every one of my printers asked wether that was my own design/idea!!
I think with this new technology every thought that we can come up with helps the guys at the printers.
My printers have chaged their machines 3 times since iīve been working with them.
I had so many different options with my 4 local printers that I thought "are these people all in the same industry"?? But then I realised that with
this type of printing detail, of course I am going to get different answers.
And alot of the new "kickstarters" are doing their stuff in 3D and there has been some amazing stuff coming onto the market recently.
If youīre a 3D modeller then do it from scratch, you have the knowledge, much easier than trying to reduce scale.
Even "kev" at Hasslefree has started with 3Ding stuff...and thatīs saying something!!!
-
well, its good that theyre asking and making sure its an artist's own creation.
ya, a lot of the spin-casting shops ive been in touch with have made it very clear how they feel about re-casting. They wont do it. And not only that, they're ethically opposed to it. Im glad to hear for 3D printers its the same. :)
Hopefully, if we can all get this mentality going, maybe one day it can be completely eliminated.
On a completely different note, I like 1/35 scale solely for collecting and painting.
Some people, they'll turn their entire garage into a museum. :D

Steve, Same here!!
This is the scale that I will be sticking with :-)

@ Comsquare, I have a couple of his Models, they are really really Good :-)
True, have a few as well and they are great.

I dont know if you know, but Tamiya has a set of 1/35th US Army and Marines (Its a box of eight figures, four and four.) from the current Iraq War. It looked like a pretty nice set and I thought of this project the moment I saw them.
Keep up the awesome work!
-
Hey Mingans, yeah I saw those as well, perfect for the "rest" of the army that survived after "The Event".
As there are so many modern military/SF operaters on the market I will not be doing any of these, I want to concentrate on figures that are not available.
I have just run into the same problems that 3d Forge are having with their 3D prints for the kickstarter.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1934394318/zombie-miniaturessurvivors-barricades-and-walls-in/posts/702334

Here is that Horror Clix figure with a couple of 28mm zombies. (http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a533/HerbyF/HERBERT-PC/2013-11-04033637_zps8c057d88.jpg) I think she would work for a couple of good conversions. And these figures are fairly cheap to puchase.
-
Hey HerbyF, now that is one BIG girl :-)
-
I think she would fit right in with your 1/35 figures. A little roughing up a few bites & wounds, the pose & expression are great.
-
I wiil try and get her on evilbay :-)
-
Rebecca - Survivor with hand-made bow (pre-production cast).
-
Wow, she's looking nice!
Did you eliminate the remains of the 3D-printer before casting?
(That's one step that northstarmodels does not do before casting....)
As soon as you get her (and her comrades) ready for selling, count me in.
One of each!
Cheers
Thomas
-
1967er - Thanks :-)
She is hand sculpted (not by me) and not one of the 3d prints, which are at the casters at the moment.
All of the 3d prints will go through a cleaning up and sanding/cutting process ready for casting, hopefully we will get rid of all of the printing layers that are visable.

A misprint of a "hockey stick schoolgirl" figure, turned into a zombie (with the help of greenstuff).

Brilliant looking survivors and zomivors as well.

While waiting for my figures to get to me from the casters I had a small bit of painting time.
Hereīs a small converstion of the "Swordmaster" from Kellerkind.
Cut out his gasmask and added a face and added two new weapons. His faithful companion is "Winston" from Smart Max.
Winston is based on Mike Talbotīs dog from the book series "Zombie Fallout".
The rules for Winston is that he is armed with "extreme Flatulence", which is rolled every turn, and on a 6 he letīs lose with his rear artillery.
In enclosed spaces this causes mayhem, even for zombies, which are knocked down for 1 turn. If this happens when the survivors are driving
they HAVE TO stop and open all windows lol

There's a Vietnamese company called Paracel Miniatures who are planning to release some 54mm zombies in July - link to planetfigure post (http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/news-for-fan-of-walking-dead-zombie.64815/) which has some pictures.
I've never heard of the company, and have no idea how easy it is to import from Vietnam, but thought I should mention them ;D

@ zemjw - yeah I saw that this morning on Planetfigure, NYD is not so unique anymore :'(
But they are not bad looking!!
