60£  :o :o Me and my Mate paid around 250£ for pretty much the same Content  :?  :'( That said, the Forces in this Startersets are very basic, they won't make a great Game, better get 2 Boxes if you can  8)

After not really giving it a second glance when it came out, I've been thinking about Dropzone Commander lately.  I like the idea of a small scale game that can really fill up a city scape.  What is the general feel of it here?  One complaint I've read is that the Dropships actually don't play as nearly a big a role as they could.

I do like the look of the new resistance faction. I don;t think I'll like the price tho.

Very tempted by this, have to say - although I'm not crazy on the design of the United Colonies of Mankind's tanks.

I have a lot of old GW Epic ones (Armageddon issue, so much nicer than their first ones), which are also 10mm, so should be usable. Does anyone know if GZG 1:300 stuff scales well with this, or are they too small?

Thanks

Never been interested in the game.  I did buy the boxed city for $40 which seems like a decent deal...though I'll be selling it (no longer doing the 1/200 scale stuff).  I think the models are severely "meh" for this game, something which will keep me at bay.  I don't really care for any of the factions or any of the models.  The scourge look downright...awful.  Good luck to them though, and I think this is the right way to go about getting new customers.  A quality box set is always a good step, and they even include a tape measure!  Nice stuff.

I'm envious -- I'd love to know how other small companies are affording injection moulds when they cost so much money to have made....

I think a lot of it is handled by a handful of companies.  For instance, Renedra Plastics does a bunch of stuff for numerous companies (from what I can tell).  So maybe it's easier to do it through another company?  Or good contacts in China.

It's still expensive though.  I think it's mostly done in the UK.  I had read a while back that Wargames Factory was looking for contract work on injection mould making so I wrote an e-mail inquiring about the process but never heard back from them....

If more was done it plastic it might be viable, however too much of the stuff is far too expensive, lovely models, but too high a price, what they should of done with this is do all the factions in plastic starter boxes, put your templates, dice and starter rules in, and charged £30 a box

I would happily investigate this game with a £30 starting price, but not £60 and be lumbered with a force (scourge) I don't like and might not be able to sell.

Failure unfortunately

Before this game came out I was really keen to get stuck in; the models looked beautiful and the game itself sounded quite unique. I like small scale stuff for sci-fi anyway due to it making the battlefield larger and weapon ranges more realistic. Then it hit and the prices were just obscene, even for such beautiful minis. Something like £11 for two walkers the size of 2p coins. Could not justify it to myself, especially with them being made out of resin, which always feels cheap to me (even though obviously it isn't and it's beautifully detailed). Then I noticed the infantry were really expensive despite being metal 10mm figures. Detailed but not THAT much a cut above other 10mm manufacturers whose prices were a lot better. I am tempted by this starter set, as I have been constantly tempted to get into the game anyway in spite of the price, but I shall wait and see.

I wouldn't call the starter set a failure unless they follow the GW business model, and don't make anything else as "affordable".  No point in saving a few bucks here if everything else becomes a finecast debacle.  Now if they back this up with a full line of models (most of them at least) in reasonable similar plastic, I'd say they'd be good to go.

Aren't these the same guys with the $1,000+ resin building set in resin? :D

Not a failure by any means, but I also dislike the Scourge being in the box. I'm sure lots of people like them but in my area, of the people who've shown an interest, no one likes the Scourge. There are some nice pieces but most are poor (in our opinion).

Tempted by the box set to try this game out, like others was put off by the price before. Who else does 10/12mm sci-fi to use with it? scenery etc is easy enough with N gauge railway stuff so very tempted to replace the card buildings with a selection of non card models.

How would the old AoG groppo stuff look against these? I've a metric bu**load.

As I recall, they are/were 10mm.

@Dewbakuk & @fbruntz

yup - I was mixing them up with the scale they chose for Warmaster. I remembered 10mm for something, then foolishly assumed consistency on GW's part ::)

Oh well, you may have just saved me a lot of money  :)

The two Scourge APCs in the bottom left look like a pair of HR Giger carpet slippers.  Which I for one would buy in an instant.

More seriously, that's a fine-looking starter set.

Okay, I was just wondering how many infantry fit in an APC given the visual appearance of the two APCs and the infantry figures themselves...

The infantry looks almost too big for the APCs unless they are squad (1 stand) carrying only.

Gracias,

Glenn

No way 15 dudes that size fit in an APC that size, even if a couple of the dudes are crew as well as dismounts (no dedicated crew).  Unless of course the dismounts are dehydrated dudes, and part of the dismount procedure is toss 'em out the back and spray 'em down so they reconstitute and go fight.

Crazy aliens!

I tend to play games where the troops would fit in their transport.   Never liked the clown car approach.

I just wish they had done Post-Human Republic instead of Scourge. The regular human faction is ok, but I really dig the PHR models, I could just never justify the price. Still, they'd work pretty well with the wizkidz battletech stuff. Might have to see if ebay resellers are breaking them up when they release.

Yea, the PHR minis are the nicest, and the Shaltari are certainly alien looking, so a bit interesting (not really sure I like the latter though).

My guess is the boxed set is for the two factions that don't sell as well as the others, individually.

The Scourge Grav Tanks are decent, but not really a fan of their other stuff, excepting perhaps the new Reaver Heavy Gunships.

They have some interesting designs, but others are a little bit too far out there for me, e.g. meaning just ugly, IMHO.

The UCM Falcon Gunship, and their light Dropships look decent, but not a fan of their other flyers.  Not really a fan of their tanks and other vehicles either.

Anyone tried their rules out using 15mm minis from other manufacturers?

They seem to be about the only set that appears to mention flyers and dropships as being an integral part to their miniatures battles, so they might be worth trying out with other minis.

As I understand it, the dropships are really integral to the game. As in "you won't be moving much without a dropship". Note how even the starter sets include enough dropship capacity to carry everything else in the set... so you'll need a lot of dropship proxies in 15mm to make it work.

I personally think 10mm scale would work better for a vehicle heavy game, but it's just too rare availability-wise and incompatible with everything I already have.

I think this is an easier sell for a newbie without boxes already full of 15mm scenery and figures...

Aesthetics aside, what a price in comparison to the regular models. You can get the same starter set for ONE faction and they cost MORE then this starter set. And this includes dice, cardboard buildings (which the reviews say are pretty nice) rules and the works. Pretty cool.

And if any of you really dislike the scourge that much please feel free to post them to me to easy your burden, I quite like them.  lol

Apparently, the dropships are actually capable of fitting each vehicle in a slot to actually carry it.  Does anyone actually use them as such?  I picture it ruining paintjob.

I have the sold-separately 6'x4' box of cardboard buildings and they're quite nice.  A proper hand could really turn them into something special with simple add-ons.  Also the huge box I got has something like 20+ buildings and it was about $35 which is nice.  I was going to use them for playtesting my 1/200 scale (roughly 10mm?) Macross/Robotech game but I've now changed scales with their kickstarter, shame.

It is nice stuff.

I'm going to take advantage of this topic and ask a question that has been on my mind for some time. Does anybody have a shots of how these scale up with different size models? The human stuff is pretty scale dependent but the more sleek designs of the post humans for instance could easily pass for drones in 28mm. I'm particularly interested if the larger flyers would look good as troop transports in 15mm

Good question.  I had actually looked at the stuff (hoping for some generic vehicles/tracked or wheeled for use with 1/200 Robotech stuff) but was horribly put off by the prices...hmm...
