I'm going to use this thread for my 28mm gladiator project. Today my two Hotz mats arrived. I bought one to play hex based games and another for Two Hour Wargames. Both mats look great and I'm happy to have a nice play area with no work from my end. Aside from painting up a handful of fighters, I dont have much work to do!
Here are two of my WIP's

I had no idea that you guys were also playing Gladiator games...I was thinking about how to introduce it to you...lol My snazy Hotz mats arrived today :)
-
Looks good, of course I'm probably biased since the Hoplomachi are my favorite. lol
-
Very nice start, particularly the Hoplomachus! I like his crest. :)
The Hotz mats do look like a good deal and an easy way to start gladiator gaming.
-
Progress to date. I plan on getting these guys finished today.

Nice paintjobs! But you realize of course that the second guy will now be known as Mr. Pink. lol

The first four gladiators of House Ericus finished!

Nice work, TBC.
I love the 'team colours'.
:-* :-*
I might steal that idea for my fellas.
:D

Cheers Mason! I wanted some continuity for my Ludus, perhaps 'first string' and 'second string' colors as well. That way I can use them as opposition to each other or from the same house for a mass fight.
-
I love the "MORT" shield of the murmillo - nice work Too Bo Coo.
Looking forward to seeing a match from you.
-
Gorgeous stuff...shame so many of these great Ludi are separated by pesky oceans and such... :'( I think a grand tournament would be a blast...

Thanks for all the nice comments Mates! I'm pretty happy with how these first turned out, and have 4 more prepped with primer for this week's project. I'm also on the hunt for a tin to do a small 3d arena to go with my mats. BTW, VERY happy with Hotz mats for gladiator games. They are very nicely done and the quality of the mats themselves seems top notch. Go with the deluxe for a couple of more colors, helps the mat to pop.
I also came across these from Black Tree Design. Not very 'historical', in fact I'd say better for a fantasy gladiator game like Red Sand Black Moon, but they are cheap!

Got it! Very nice indeed! :)

I picked this pine box up at a second hang shop, and although I could only fit 9 squares in per side, it's nice as a test project for an afternoon. I intended it to be a wood pit arena on some far flung province, so modest in every sense. When I go home to the States for the holidays I'll drop by an art supply and pick up plastic columns for my Playmobil arena Smiley
Anyhoo, here is my wip....
-
With some minis.
-
Looks good so far. :)

I really like the wooden paneling look a lot. It looks like it belongs in some far flung town of a province in the north somewhere. :)
Although the dimensions are a little tight, it will prove interesting trying to keep your gladiator off the wall. A slightly more rectangular box would do the trick nicely.
Looking forward to seeing this finished.

Oooh, I like that, TBC!
:-*
I will get around to sorting out my own arena soon and all these offerings are providing great inspiration.

Inching along...

Missed this before, glad to see someone else join the madness :D

Darn it, yet another fabulous gladiator blog! Like I need yet another project started... but I do have those prepainted gladiators already...
When we will see the opposition team?

Welcome to the Dark Side! >:)
It's a really nice project to undertake as a small side project. Tons of fun, and you can use almost all of the materials over and over with new rulesets!
Gladiators are fun as heck!

That's great Too Bo Coo. :)
Easily transportable and can hold all the bits and pieces too!

Great finish, TBC.

Gotta agree with you that this Gladioli lark is very addictive.
I have one of Bibble's wonderful hex boards and a pile of fighters that I am itching to get at.
Hooked and I havent even had a chance to paint anything yet.
lol

Thanks guys, this was just a throw together. Furt's right, the plan is to take my spare Battlefoam foam and make an insert to hold my gladiators. I'm also planning on making a seal of some kind to go on the inside of the box to say something like:
Founding of the
House Ericus
104 AD
Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum
The last bit was the Roman name for the Dutch city Nijmegen, an old Roman camp. But since I'm crap on the computer I doubt this will be much more than a word doc that I hit with ink. I wish I could do a Roman type border and a stylized font, but my copy of Word doesnt have anything... Bummer.
The box came unfinished, so I hit the entire thing with Strong Tone Army Painter, so that's the shade on wood... I think it came out well, and really didnt use very much at all. The sopt on the inside lid that I want to cover was where I glued the handle to hold while I varnished it.
All in all, about 4 hours of work without drying. And now a nice arena to take to my games night! Cheers guys!
-
Looks good...and that's pretty small, I see a lot of "pinned against a wall" coming your way! lol The proverbial "Knife fight in a phone booth"...
-
Just wanted to get a group shot of the Ludus!
If you click on the picture, it will open in a new window, and then click on that again for a super closeup.
-
Lovely!
-
Really very nice - a great looking ludus!! :-*

Nice work, I really like the hinged lid. If you stabilized the top you could use it as a surface to roll on. You have some well painted miniatures there too.
