Title: Fist Full of Kung Fu
Post by: nicknorthstar on August 23, 2013, 06:27:42 PM
Here is a sneak preview of the figures we are making for Osprey Wargames 2014 set of rules 'Fist Full of Kung Fu'

Designed by North Star's Steve Saleh, these figures represent one member of each of the first four sets we are doing, and are based on artwork from the book.

I must be the only person on earth who has never bothered to watch Big Trouble blah blah...

Love those figures, though.
Can see plenty of use for those in Spy-fi.
 ;)

What with your Mythology and IHMN releases, you fellas are certainly building a very nice stable of minis for them.

I doubt that, and I'm guessing if I saw the film now I'd change my mind but I suppose it's from my "Golden Age"

I've seen it many, many times, and it never gets tired... :D

Got a pile of Hasslefree Martial Artists headed my way right now. A few more China Town minis to paint, build a nice board, and wait for the game to come out...

Nice! Time to dust off my collection of John Woo films like "Hard Boiled" for inspiration. Tell me there's going to be a not Chow Yun-Fat mini. ;)

I don't think we'll do a Nickstarter, but there definitely will be a pre-order incentive, probably like we did with Ronin.

Four sets plus rules? Same price range? I need to start saving my pennies now, so my darling bride can brace herself for when I do the big buy-in!

I'll have to check, but the Kung Fu gangs factions might be smaller than the Ronin Buntais, so will be a little cheaper.

I have to say this is part of the appeal to me, andreas tends to lay down some very interesting mechanics. Should it be based upon prior games I would prefer Songs rather then battlesworn.

Surely you need some (R)HKP uniforms to back up the hard-bitten, martial-artist detectives....

I'm working on how best to combine the shootout from the teahouse in Hard Boiled:

with the battle in the alley in Big Trouble in Little China and a set-up of bamboo construction scaffolding.

You'll be waiting a while, it's not released until February next year  ;)

I've seen some of the sculpts Mr Saleh is working on though and they are looking pretty damned cool.

Come  on then guys rules for the last set were child like, the pictures and book shite n unsophisticated . The figures however  were superb I hop North Star can put it together with some decent rules n playability and a better  book to the standard of EOD

Hi sgallagher – I'd be curious to know which volume you disliked so much – I'm always after constructive feedback to help improve the series. For example, following a number of comments and reviews, from Fistful of Kung Fu onwards we're tweaking the design to give clearer to follow chapters and to better use the space.

While we could quite easily put together a full colour, hardback book like EOD (Osprey has done it before – Bolt Action being a prime example), the price would go up to match. OWG titles are intended to be light on frills in order to keep them affordable – £12 instead of £30.

Cheers!

Sorry nick , I guess I would prefer paying 30 pounds for a more sophisticated book as u and obviously Osprey  are cable of doing rather then a comic book that cost 12 pounds? Sorry. Your figures are superb , but I felt that in her Majesites Name was a complete let Down Which was sad because it had great potential. But that's my humble view and it's only toy soldiers at the end of the day. cheers

I thought the format was one of the best points of IHMN.
The 'open' style, concentrating on a sensible set of straightforward rules, asking to be slightly modified for your own tastes without loads of pointless pictures pushing the price up, made sense to me.

So much so that I am looking at getting the others in the series.

I dont want to pay for 'fluff'.
I can add my own.

There must be rules for sliding down a banister while shooting dual pistols.

When your clip is empty roll a dice, for 4 or above you do not need to reload. On 3 or less duck behind cover and reload dramatically.

This rule would probably cause more reloads in a single game than the number of reloaded weapons in every John Woo movie.

I see this book is on Amazon pre-order.    Have a couple of Safari Ltd Chinese dragons that I've been looking for a suitable game to use.   I hope it has dragons (!)

Terrain?   HK does have its modern shopping malls, glass highrises, as well as parks and green space.    Also island fishing villages, at least one monastery, a large shipping port, casinos (in Macau)....

I'd guess most people would have in mind a "hard boiled" street look.    Plain concrete exteriors, exposed air conditioners, laundry hanging from windows--a lot of neon of course.   Don't forget the occasional McDonalds, KFC, or 7-11.    Taxis, double-decked buses.    You could look at Google Images for ideas: "Kowloon walled city", "Chunking Mansion", "Nathan Road", "Mongkok",  etc.

having watched that scene I would think that some sort of rules about never having to reload would be a good start.

Thanks for the feedback. No offence taken at all - like I say, all feedback, good or bad, is welcome. By the by, I'm not Nick (North Star), but Phil Smith, Osprey editor (imagine Scooby-Doo-style mask removal here!)

Cheers!
